In the third act of “St. Denis Medical’s” fourth episode, “Salamat You Too,” a group of nurses are on break when the head nurse, Alex (Allison Tolman), interrupts to gently reprimand their previous insubordination. Earlier, the self-identified “Filipino Mafia” didn’t like when Alex split up their “clique,” so they simply ignored her orders and stuck together. Then, in an effort to reestablish her authority, Alex walks to the dry-erase board and tries to remind her colleagues that she’s the boss — a simple declaration that nevertheless requires a six-part written breakdown (including one particularly abstract acronym).
Alex is the focal point of the scene. She’s leading the meeting — issuing directives, speaking emphatically, gesticulating wildly — and Tolman’s ability to channel relatable frustrations through passive aggressive instructions is pretty funny. But even with her talent on full display, the funniest bits take place in the background. One even starts before the scene itself,...

A series like The Office or Parks and Recreation has the ability to make the ordinary, funny. Or at least help you find the humor. Last week, we were introduced to the staff at St. Denis Medical. The half hour comedy tells the tale of a small group of health care workers dealing with the inane and the insane. The cast includes the very funny David Alan Grier, Allison Tolman, and Wendi McLendon-Covey. The story of an underfunded hospital, and all the problems that go with it also includes Josh Lawson, Kaliko Kauahi, Kahyun Kim, and Mekki Lepper. You can check out new episodes on Tuesday, at 8 Pm Et.

Let’s just say that the third episode of NBC’s St. Denis Medical, titled “Weird Stuff You Can’t Explain,” seems poised to live up to its name. Ron (David Alan Grier), apparently tired of the pervasive superstitions plaguing the hospital, decides to take matters into his own hands. His efforts to debunk these beliefs, however, appear […]

They say laughter is the best medicine, so it’s a good thing the NBC comedy machine is back up and running this week, ready to cure those Americans currently suffering from a general sense of unease. Set at an understaffed hospital in Oregon, “St. Denis Medical” is a mockumentary seemingly constructed from the well-preserved remains of some of TV’s best and brightest workplace comedies, from “Parks and Recreation” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” to “The Office” and “Abbott Elementary.”
Created by Justin Spitzer (“Superstore”) and Eric Ledgin (“American Auto”), the series — the first two episodes of which are now streaming on Peacock — features a talented cast that includes Allison Tolman, Wendi McLendon-Covey, David Alan Grier, and Josh Lawson. By filtering its comedy through an issue affecting millions of Americans — the country’s broken healthcare system — “St. Denis Medical” is both topical and funny, making it the awards contender to watch this weekend.

“St. Denis Medical,” a comedy that breaks away from traditional medical dramas by showing the dull side of healthcare in an Oregon hospital that doesn’t have enough money, is set to launch on NBC. The show, which starts on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. Et/Pt, claims to look at medical workers’ daily problems in a documentary-style way.
Justin Spitzer and Eric Ledgin created the show to show the human side of healthcare, which is often ignored. Their idea came from a true story about hospital staff who tried to talk to an incompetent surgeon but were met with pushback from administrators who were worried about losing money.
Thanks to the ensemble cast, this office comedy has a lot of depth. Allison Tolman plays Alex, a kind but tired nurse, and David Alan Grier plays Ron, her cynical boss. Wendi McLendon-Covey plays Joyce, the hospital’s quick-talking executive director. The group also includes Josh Lawson,...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for St. Denis Medical Season 1, Episode 1, “Welcome to St. Denis.”] St. Denis Medical has finally arrived on NBC, and it’s delivering strong Parks and Recreation and The Office vibes as the network explores the inner workings of the titular hospital through the lens of a mockumentary. The pilot episode quickly establishes the players at the heart of this sweet series, which focuses on workaholic nurse Alex (Allison Tolman) as she tries wrapping up her duties for the day to make it in time for her kid’s musical. Every time she is about to step away, something pulls Alex’s attention back in and doctor Ron (David Alan Grier) is quick to call her out for not adhering to normal hours or work-life boundaries. Ron is more jaded, seeing patients as broken-down cars that he’s endlessly repairing and patching up. Casey Durkin / NBC Alex and Ron’s dynamic feels...

The world of medical TV shows is typically filled with gorgeous people swooping in to perform dangerous and daring operations as they dart from rare condition to in-office romance. That’s not “St. Denis Medical.” NBC’s latest comedy is more likely to feature two nurses feuding over a candy bar than pulling off a medical miracle.
“Part of the genesis of this show was talking about what is the day-to-day of a non-beautiful ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ or ‘ER?'” executive producer Justin Spitzer told TheWrap during the Television Critics Association’s 2024 summer tour.
For showrunner and EP Eric Ledgin, the true heart of the series made itself known when he was talking to a doctor “friend of a friend.” In the doctor’s hospital, there was a surgeon who was performing bad surgeries and endangering patients. So the staff banded together and worked to get this problematic surgeon fired.

St. Denis Medical — Pictured: David Alan Grier as Dr Ron — (Photo by: Ron Batzdorff/NBC) St. Denis Medical tries to do for hospitals what Abbott Elementary does for schools and The Office does for, well, offices. But, although the show is done in a mockumentary style, David Alan Grier thinks the show goes much deeper than you would expect for a comedy. The emotions the show will elicit, Grier said it will be real, and they could have you laughing and crying at the same time. “The Office,” “Parks and Recreation,” “Abbott Elementary” and now “St. Denis Medical,” the latest in a line of television workplace mockumentary comedies. Mentioning these previous titles shouldn’t be a knock against “St. Denis,” as it feels like it was designed to purposefully coast on these titles’ previously established rhythms, ensembles, dynamics and storylines. It’s a gentle, familiar-feeling show, and while it really works when it finds spiky, surprising and even uncomfortable ruffles to the formula, it plays pretty well when it’s just pulling it off too.
To describe the show’s world is as simple as saying “‘Modern Family’ but the family is doctors,” or “‘Scrubs’ but they’re aware of the camera.” The Emmy-nominated Allison Tolman (“Fargo”) leads an ensemble of medical professionals as our Leslie Knope-esque overachieving supervising nurse Alex.

The sitcom writer Justin Spitzer had his first script credit on “Scrubs,” the archetypal workplace comedy set in a hospital. Twenty years later, Spitzer returns to the genre with NBC’s “St. Denis Medical,” co-created with Eric Ledgin (“Rutherford Falls”). In between, Spitzer has developed a trademark approach that translates seamlessly to health care. A graduate of “The Office,” he makes shows set on the front lines of the modern economy: the sales floor of a big-box retailer (“Superstore”) or the headquarters of a flailing car manufacturer (“American Auto”). (Ledgin worked on both.) Spitzer characters don’t debate issues at length like Norman Lear ones did, but their everyday lives are unmistakably downstream of larger social and political forces.

In 1995’s Jumanji, Kirsten Dunst and Bradley Pierce discover a peculiar board game in the attic of their new home. Words appear as they roll the dice: “This will not be an easy mission. Monkeys slow the expedition.”
That scene came to life over in South Carolina on Wednesday afternoon, when the Yemassee Police Department reported that 43 rhesus macaque monkeys escaped from the Alpha Genesis Primate Research Center.
Authorities said the monkeys are very young females weighing “approximately six-seven pounds” who have not been tested on due to their age and size.

Since ABC’s hit series “Scrubs” wrapped its nine-season run in 2010, Hollywood has mostly shied away from comedies set in hospitals — at times a tough place to find laughs — though there have been outliers like Fox and Hulu’s “The Mindy Project,” Warner Bros. and Adult Swim’s absurdist “Childrens Hospital” and HBO’s critically acclaimed “Getting On.”
NBC is the latest to attempt it with “St. Denis Medical,” a new sitcom that blends this challenging setting with a popular format: mockumentary. Can Hollywood find comedy inside a hospital in 2024, especially from a show that focuses on hospital workers’ everyday lives and following a global pandemic?

Cue the laughter — or, at least, the laugh tracks! The U.S. broadcast networks are hoping to bring the levity with this fall’s slate of new TV comedies. Only five are debuting before the end of the year — with Variety reporting that the networks are introducing a record-low number of scripted shows this fall — but the newcomers should tickle a wide variety of funny bones. After getting to know these freshman series, here’s what we’d recommend for whom. If you wish there could be a hospital-set Abbott Elementary, check out St. Denis Medical. Samuel L. Jackson was honored at the Museum of Modern Art’s 2024 Film Benefit, presented by Chanel, on Wednesday, as a star-studded group of friends and collaborators paid tribute to the actor.
Denzel Washington, Spike Lee, Walton Goggins, Kenny Leon, wife Latanya Richardson Jackson and MoMA’s chief curator of film Rajendra Roy were all in attendance at the event, with Brie Larson and George Lucas sending video messages of support.
Lucas noted how Jackson is “not always like the parts he plays; he’s much more of a sweet, honest, good, helpful, loving guy.” Lee looked back at their early days together in Atlanta, recalling even in college thinking of Jackson and his friends, “I know that God willing, if I became a filmmaker, these great artists would be in my films.”
