Kanu Behl’s third feature film, Despatch, offers an unflinching and incisive exploration of the murky nexus between politics, media, and business, seen through the lens of a crime journalist. This chilling truth underscores the systemic nature of the issues within the media landscape. At its heart, the film delves into the fundamental duality that haunts every journalist: the intoxicating thrill of chasing a “good story” juxtaposed against...

Kanu Behl as a director is a mystery, in that his delving into genres and their templates, especially the neo-noir, goes so far off that it starts feeling like an edgier approximation of actually cool ideas. Both Behl and co-writer Ishani Banerjee’s idea is sound, i.e., to explore the nexus of journalism, the 2G scam, and the underworld through the perspective of a cog in the proverbial journalism machine: the old, grizzled newsman. Except, unlike most of these newsmen in movies related to journalism, Joy Bag (Manoj Bajpayee) in “Despatch” (2024) is not a righteous man, carrying a torch about the truth of journalism.
Bag is a relic of the past, comfortable in using technology as a means of communication (Nokia phones with Qwerty keypads), but miffed at the proliferation of technology creeping into his workplace, as that would entail news becoming more and more dependent on instantaneous reportage,...

Manoj Bajpayee is familiar with the crime genre. His breakout role was that of Bhiku Mhatre in one of the greatest Hindi films of all time, Satya, where we got a peek into a version of Mumbai’s underworld. Then he was in Shool, which focused on crime and politics in Bihar. He played Veerendra Pratap in Raajneeti, which was an amalgamation of Mahabharat and The Godfather. He was integral to the evolution of the landscape of Hindi cinema that was triggered by Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur duology. He is currently the face of the Silence franchise. Through The Family Man and Killer Soup, he has shown he is incredibly comfortable with flexing his acting chops through the episodic format on the small screen. So, I think it’s pretty normal to be hyped about his next project. But I’d advise you to keep your excitement at bay,...

Nine years after making “Thithi,” one of my favorite Indian films of the 2010s, Raam Reddy is back with “The Fable,” set in a place that couldn’t be further away from the setup of his first film. Nestled deep in the Himalayas, formally set in 1989, “The Fable” retains the timeless nature in its setup, which is typical of the fables. It is shot in film, which only helps to further the cause. The magnificent opening scene sets the tone of the magic realism which is set to follow. Using fireflies as a constant motif, which in many cultures has a supernatural significance, only heightens the sense of magic realism.
But beyond the surface of magic realism, “The Fable” very meticulously examines the underlying tension between different classes in the village. Dev’s (Manoj Bajpayee) family are the owners of the apple estate, handed to them by the colonial rulers of the country.

“This was the film that happened to me just when I was transitioning into a more spiritual realm of life, and my mind was in no mood to get stuck into this ambition mode and the goal mode,” Bajpayee tells Variety. “It is something that I have been searching for for many years.”

Siddhant Chaturvedi is a talented actor who played a rapper in Gully Boy as though born to do so. But a typical Hindi film hero, he is not. In director Ravi Udyawar’s Yudhra which means the fight, t is phonetically very close to Yudh, which was the title of Rajiv Rai’s action-musical 1985 blockbuster.
The two films. 49 years apart, are close country cousins. Nothing changes in mainstream Hindi cinema, except the faces, though they continue to express the same range of expressions from A to B. The hero of Udyawar’s scrappily written bonecruncher is remarkably expressionless.
Luckily Siddhant Chaturvedi who plays the titutal bulldozer, has little scope or occasion to act, except in the pre-climax where he presumes his girl is dead.
Yudhra sobs. The audience in the theatre burst out laughing.
For the rest Chaturvedi clenches his fists grits his pearlywhite teeth and roars towards the villains with bullish energy.

Not quite the Greatest Of All Times, but Vijay’s new sidekick of film has plenty going for itself for those who crave for his antics. The screenplay doesn’t stop at being an out-and-out Vijay vehicle: it takes time to stop and actually punctuate the hagiography with inhouse references. For example, in the gripping if far-fetched climax, Vijay asks his screen daughter who her favourite is.
“Thalapathy,” she moans, and then serves a head bang to the villain who has her in his grips.
Oh yes, cricketer Dhoni also shows up for the baggy climax.
It would be no exaggeration to say that this movie about gross exaggerations leaves no stone unturned to ensure that Vijay fans go home satiated. As for the rest, do they really matter?
As a non-Vijay fan I must say the way Vijay plays the younger of his two roles, a terrorist-assassin-disruptor named Jeevan...
