As technological advances make even more astonishing imagery possible for many of the leading contenders in the animated feature Oscar race, they’re still leaning toward the skilled hands of the artisans who’ve mastered their craft and away from AI or machine learning.
While some may use machine learning — a type of AI — in the early stages of motion capture or to iterate ideas, the knowledge of experienced VFX artists and the performance capabilities of animators are central to creating the unique imagery sought by the filmmakers behind these movies. Some films, like “Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim,” are more focused on traditional low-tech tools to create their look.
“Transformers One,” an origin story helmed by Josh Cooley, was designed with heavy research on both previous Transformers storytelling and the types of metals that could be used to create the impact the filmmakers wanted. Cooley’s...

“Transformers One,” the animated reboot from Paramount/Hasbro and director Josh Cooley (“Toy Story 4”), leverages the format as never before with a brand new handmade look and an emphasis on emotional performance that helps us better connect with the robots. Also, transformations are key as homages to the original toys and the ’80s G1 cartoon series, with every piece of the robot having a corresponding place on the vehicle.
This plays into the origin story of Cybertron and the roots of its destruction by focusing on the friendship between lowly miners Orion Pax (Chris Hemsworth) and D-16 (Brian Tyree Henry). They eventually transform into the legendary Autobots Optimus Prime and Megatron, only to become bitter enemies divided by optimism and anger.
Ilm was tasked with the animation (only its third feature following “Ultraman: Rising” and the Oscar-winning “Rango”), overseen by VFX supervisor Frazer Churchill and animation supervisor Stephen King.

Paramount/Hasbro Entertainment dropped the second trailer for “Transformers One” July 25, following its San Diego Comic-Con premiere. The first animated feature reboot from director Josh Cooley (“Toy Story 4”) explores the untold origin story of Autobots on planet Cybertron before Michael Bay’s post-apocalyptic live-action franchise. We learn about the early friendship between Orion Pax (Chris Hemsworth) and D-16 (Brian Tyree Henry) prior to becoming bitter enemies as the legendary Optimus Prime and infamous Megatron.
Orion and D-16 are hard-working, frustrated miners, who drill underground for Energon (the source of energy storage and power generation) during a sustained drought. However, they dream of joining the elite team of Autobots led by Sentinel Prime (Jon Hamm). What Cooley brings to the franchise through animation is greater emotion, humor, and stylization, thanks to the talented team at Ilm (led by VFX supervisor Frazer Churchill and animation supervisor Rob Coleman) and an appealing voice cast,...

A bunch of sequels and a remake are vying for the Best Visual Effects Oscar this year, many of them from Disney, including Bill Condon’s live-action remake of Disney’s classic “Beauty and the Beast,” Marvel’s “Thor: Ragnarok” and Lucasfilm’s upcoming “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”
Three Fox films offer stunning VFX: “War for the Planet of the Apes,” which advances its visual effects technology over the last Matt Reeves installment featuring Weta Digital’s astonishing array of digital apes led by performance capture master Andy Serkis as Caesar, could win Weta’s Joe Letteri (“Avatar,” “King Kong,” “The Lord of the Rings”) his fifth Oscar. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (Blu-ray)Universal Home Entertainment2010/Rated PG-13/112 minsList Price: $39.98 – Available NowUniversally praised by critics, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is a film that just couldn't seem to find an audience last summer. Perhaps it was due to the fact that the picture opened during the busiest season of the year, getting lost amid a swarm of blockbusters. Or maybe what worked for some, just didn't jell for many. After anticipating the film for nearly two years, the final product didn't manage to click with me either. I was familiar with the source material, Brian Lee O'Malley's underground comic and felt that director Edgar Wright could bring the essence of the indie hit to the silver screen. In many aspects he did, Wright's adaptation of Scott Pilgrim is not only faithful to O'Malley's work, but feels as if it literally jumped right off the page. That may...

"Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World" hits shelves on DVD and Blu-Ray in November, and Universal has released the full specs for every iteration of Edgar Wright's live-action adaptation of Bryan Lee O'Malley's hit comic book series.
While the movie didn't quite meet expectations at the box office, it was difficult to find anyone who didn't have high praise for Wright's kinetic, effects-driven celebration of everything that made O'Malley's comic so great. And like any good DVD/Blu-Ray release, the movie comes packed with some cool bonus features, too.
Personally, I'm a little intrigued by the deleted scenes and alternate footage, as I managed to sneak into an early workprint of the film and, well... the ending of the unfinished version of the film was quite different from the theater cut I saw.

"It was all pretty tricky." That's how "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" visual-effects supervisor Frazer Churchill describes the film's inimitable look — part manga, part 16-bit video game, exploding on every frame with bright colors and pulsing graphics. That's also a crazy understatement.
Each of the film's fight scenes offers a master class in the very latest in moviemaking technology, from the use of cutting-edge CG software to on-the-ground practical effects work. "Tricky" is putting it lightly. It was damn hard work, and although "Scott Pilgrim" performed disappointingly at the box office this weekend — opening to just $10.5 million in ticket sales — what director Edgar Wright and his team managed to pull off on the screen is deserving of wide acclaim.

To say moviegoers have never seen anything like "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" is not exactly true. Pop culture has been suffused with its various in-your-face references — from "Super Mario Brothers" coins to "Seinfeld" bass lines to Japanese manga visuals and beyond — for decades. But what no one has ever seen is a film that so seamlessly and energetically gathers them all together into a neon pastiche of flashing graphics, sound cues and linguistic nods.
What makes this entertainment patchwork all the more impressive is that it takes place within a recognizable world: neighborly, snow-covered Toronto. Welcome to magical realism, 21st-century-cinema style. Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera), the sleepy-eyed hero, fights off his girlfriend's nefarious exes in a series of...

Michael Cera in "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World"
As it made its way to this week's screen debut, "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" faced a challenge that comes with all adaptations from comics to film: How faithful do you stay to the established, beloved source material and how much do you strike out on your own, creating new plotlines and aesthetics?
There's no one answer. "Batman Begins" and "The Dark Knight" drew deep inspiration from classic DC Comics issues, while "Wanted" strayed far from its original basis. But it's always interesting to see where filmmakers draw their creative lines. In adapting Bryan Lee O'Malley's six-volume "Scott Pilgrim" graphic novel series, Edgar Wright decided to compress six books into one film, and as a result had to ditch a slew of storylines.
