Martha Stewart has regrets. No, not necessarily about that whole insider-trading thing: In 2005, she had to turn down hosting “Saturday Night Live.”
Stewart said during “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” that she was asked by “SNL” creator Lorne Michaels to host an episode of the sketch series in 2005 after her release from prison. Stewart served five months at the Federal Prison Camp in Alderson, West Virginia after being convicted of fraud and insider trading. However, her hosting “SNL” would have violated her parole.
“I wanted to, and they asked me as I was coming out of Alderson, that camp I was in for a while,” Stewart said. “And my parole officer wouldn’t give me the time to do it. That bastard! I still have his name and his number.”
She added, “I’m so pissed. Maybe some day. I would be amazing. Start a campaign!”

Martha Stewart is one of the most impersonated people on Saturday Night Live, but she has yet to host the sketch show. On a new episode of The Tonight Show, Stewart spoke to host Jimmy Fallon about being impersonated nine different times, including by David Spade.
“David’s my favorite,” Stewart confirmed. “He was wearing my poncho. The real poncho.” She added that she loves seeing a Martha Stewart impression because “imitation is the highest form of flattery and you might as well be imitated.”
Fallon then inquired whether she hopes to host SNL.

It’s hard to imagine an occasion that would make Sara Bareilles nervous, considering that the Grammy Award winner is a veteran of stages far and wide. But Friday night’s Celebrating Sundance Institute fundraiser at Park City’s Grand Hyatt Deer Valley proved to be such an event.
Upon taking her place in the ballroom lights to close out the starry event, Bareilles admitted that it was the “fancy room” that sent her nerves into overdrive. The fundraiser saw a long list of honorees and presenters take the stage including A Complete Unknown filmmaker James Mangold, Wicked star Cynthia Erivo, Sundance Institute’s Michelle Satter, Glenn Close, Joel Edgerton, Marielle Heller, R.J. Cutler and Tessa Thompson. Guests making the rounds included Jon Hamm, Boots Riley, Kimberly Peirce, Roger Ross Williams and more.
Or maybe it was because the film that brought her to Sundance this year means so much to her.

The ineligible adapted scripts were Golden Globe champ Conclave (by Peter Straughan), Emilia Pérez (by Jacques Audiard), I’m Still Here (by Walter Salles), Inside Out 2 (by Meg LeFauve and Dave Holstein with a...

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has unveiled its nominees for the 2025 WGA Awards, highlighting a mix of familiar Oscar frontrunners, unexpected entries, and the creative reshuffling prompted by ineligible contenders.
Sean Baker’s critically acclaimed “Anora” is leading the original screenplay list, which many consider the Oscar frontrunner in this category. Another strong contender is Jesse Eisenberg’s “A Real Pain,” a personal, semi-autobiographical drama that has been a critical favorite this season.
The inclusion of Justin Kuritzkes’ “Challengers” — a romantic sports drama starring Zendaya — is significant. After its high-profile shutout at the BAFTA Awards, this nomination could rejuvenate its awards season momentum. Adding variety to the category is Alex Garland’s bold post-apocalyptic thriller, “Civil War,” and Megan Park’s sweet yet irreverent comedy, “My Old Ass.” Park, who won praise for her directorial debut “The Fallout,” is also a DGA nominee for first-time director.

In the Original Screenplay category, “Anora” and “A Real Pain” were nominated alongside “Challengers,” “Civil War” and “My Old Ass.” In Adapted Screenplay, “A Complete Unknown,” “Nickel Boys” and “Wicked” will be up against “Dune: Part Two” and “Hit Man.”

Many documentaries were made about famous people like Elton John, Celine Dion, and Christopher Reeve, but none of them made the Academy’s shortlist for Best Documentary. However, Elton John’s brand-new song “Never Too Late” made it to the Original Song list.
The Documentary Branch of the Academy looked at 169 qualified films and chose 15 finalists. Festival favorites and politically charged works made up most of this list. Ten of the chosen documentaries had their world premieres at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, and others were shown at important events in Berlin, Venice, and Toronto.

This week’s mega-top pick is “Conclave,” an Academy Awards contender that’s now streaming on Peacock. The drama is projected to earn nominations for Best Picture, Best Director for Edward Berger, Best Actor for Ralph Fiennes, and Best Supporting Actress for Isabella Rossellini, among others. Perhaps most notably, Peter Straughan is currently projected to win Best Adapted Screenplay for his smart script.
The film is a “papal thriller” set in Vatican City shortly after the death of a sitting Pope. Cardinal Thomas Lawrence (Fiennes) is leading the conclave to select a new Pope, which is inevitably a high-stakes political battle. But it gets even more complicated when he discovers some information about the late Pope that could tear the Church apart. Hollywood doesn’t make a lot of satisfying, well-crafted movies for grown-ups like “Conclave” anymore, so it’s worth watching just to see a good old-fashioned drama.

Celebrity documentaries are commanding lofty price tags at the moment, even though “star power” itself seems to be losing its sizzle.
The facts are nasty: Superstar endorsements carried zero clout in the presidential elections. Further, studios have lost their zeal for the once pivotal pre-opening star interview circuit. Superstar vehicles like Wolfs (George Clooney and Brad Pitt) drifted before audiences with limited exposure to blurbdom. Sequel numbers carry greater weight than festival fervor.
Defying this algorithmic blur, Apple TV still felt its Billie Eilish caper was worth $27 million, and Disney forked out $32 million for Elton John: Never Too Late. Disney also paid handsomely for a new/old doc titled Beatles ’64 from Paul McCartney, premiering this week. Could Taylor Swift be far behind?
Intriguingly, audiences still register an appetite for docs about past legends like Humphrey Bogart as well as semi-present ones like Bob Dylan — even litigating about their validity.

Elton John discusses how Reginald Dwight became Elton John, and his realization years later that overhauling his persona had left him feeling empty inside, in this exclusive clip from his upcoming interview on Good Morning America.
During the interview, GMA’s Robin Roberts asks John about his aversion to his birth name, both personally and as a budding rock & roll star. For John, “Reginald” was a “really old-fashioned name,” and he hated the shortened version of “Reggie.”

Six directors of standout 2024 documentaries gathered in late November for THR’s annual Documentary Roundtable.
Two were veteran American documentary filmmakers: R.J. Cutler, who helmed Netflix’s Martha, a portrait of Martha Stewart that explores the price of pursuing perfection, and Disney’s Elton John: Never Too Late, which contrasts the rise to stardom with the farewell tour of the singer-songwriter (David Furnish co-directed the latter); and Matt Tyrnauer, director of Greenwich Films’ Carville: Winning Is Everything, Stupid, a profile of James Carville, the legendary Democratic strategist. Another was Swiss-born Ian Bonhôte, whose third doc, which he directed with Peter Ettedgui, is Warner Bros.’ Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, in which the life, work and tragic accident of the titular beloved movie star is examined 20 years after his death.

After watching an early cut of the documentary Elton John: Never Too Late, Brandi Carlile felt inspired to write a song about one of her musical heroes.
“I wanted to write a song after I’d seen the documentary about his latter-day serenity and how he just will not accept the concept of aging. He’s just not going to grow old or he won’t do it,” Carlile says in an exclusive video as she discusses the track. “I wanted people to understand what I see in Elton, which is just that he’s really, really tough, but loving person.”
That’s how “Never Too Late,” the song, was born. It plays over the credits of the documentary and Carlile, who also sings on the track alongside John, co-wrote it with the Egot winner, Bernie Taupin and Andrew Watt. The film’s directors — R.J. Cutler and David Furnish, John...

R.J. Cutler had a busy 2024. He released two high-profile movies: “Martha,” which chips away at the steely façade of Martha Stewart, and “Elton John: Never Too Late,” which follows the rock star’s final tour while flashing back to his incendiary early career. And apparently, he’s not slowing down: He did this interview from New York on the morning of the fifth game of the World Series between the Dodgers and the Yankees, which he was filming for a documentary that’ll no doubt be out soon.
Both of these films could easily be two- or three-part doc series. Did you always envision them as standalone films?
Absolutely. If ever there’s a life story that deserves the big-screen treatment, it’s Martha Stewart’s. And that’s also what I envisioned from the beginning with Elton. In the years prior to meeting (codirector) David (Furnish), if you had...

Before YouTubers and Instagram influencers, there was Martha Stewart. She has been changing culture for nearly 50 years, publishing cookbooks, creating Emmy-winning TV shows, and writing blogs on a range of lifestyle topics.
The new Netflix documentary Martha, directed by R.J. Cutler, explores Martha's 80 years of life, spanning generations of her personal and professional life.
Martha Stewart popularized beautifully photographed cookbooks, of which she has written nearly 100, and was one of the first celebrities to create a whole lifestyle brand around her name. She was one of the first people to make luxurious homeware accessible by making it available at affordable prices in big-box stores.
Without Martha, we might not be able to open our phones and learn how to cook, style ourselves, or dress our homes, and people may not be finding international success offering lifestyle tips to their followers.

According to Collider, Martha Stewart has slammed her new Netflix documentary, Martha, calling out the director and criticizing the way it was filmed. Director R.J. Cutler explored the businesswoman and lifestyle guru's life, following her journey from teenage model to America's first self-made female billionaire.
The documentary hasn't been scared to handle the explosive parts of her life and relationships, including her marriage to Andy Stewart and their infidelities. That is not why the lifestyle influencer was unhappy with it, however. In a recent interview, she didn't hold back on the elements of the documentary that she hated. She scalded the director for unflattering camera angles, leaving interviews on the cutting room floor, and the poor choice of music.
Oh yeah, the documentary is fine, she told Jimmy Fallon. It left out a lot, so Im going to talk to them about maybe doing version two.

Elton John’s “severe” eye infection has caused him to lose sight in his right eye for four months. The singer-songwriter developed the infection over the summer while in the south of France. In September, John shared the news about the infection, and revealed it was impacting vision in one of his eyes. “It will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye,” he wrote on Instagram at the time.

Elton John hasn’t been able to see out of his right eye for the past four months, following an eye infection that happened in July. The medical incident, which happened in the south of France, left the iconic singer unsure of whether or not he can return to the studio.
“It’s been four months now since I haven’t been able to see, and my left eye is not the greatest,” John said during an interview with “Good Morning America.”
“There’s hope and encouragement that it’ll be Ok, but I’m kind of stuck at the moment because I can do something like this, but going into the studio and recording, I don’t know,” John continued, revealing that he isn’t current’y able to see the lyrics. “It kind of floored me. I can’t see anything. I can’t read anything, I can’t watch anything.

In the summer of 2023, Elton John did something unimaginable: He stopped touring.
He had performed at least 90 shows annually for so many years over the past half-century. Yet with the close of his five-year Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour that July, that stage of life was ending.
“I’m 77 years of age. I’ve done all there is to do. I’ve succeeded. I’ve been there. I’ve done it,” he recalled of his decision when speaking Oct. 1 at the New York Film Festival. “I’m still going to make records. I’m still going to have music in my life. But the most important thing in my life [is husband] David, [adolescent sons] Zachary and Elijah, and my family and my friends.”
The end of his touring career was a big personal milestone for John but also a larger cultural moment, given the breadth of his career and the path he paved for other gay entertainers.

Martha Stewart has expressed her interest in a revamped documentary chronicling her life.
The 83-year-old businesswoman recently told Jimmy Fallon during a guest appearance on “The Tonight Show” that R.J. Cutler’s “Martha” documentary “left out a lot.” Stewart added: “I’m going to go talk to them about maybe doing version two. There’s a lot more to my life. I mean, I’ve lived a long time and I just thought maybe we’ve left out some stuff … good stuff.”
During an interview with the New York Times in October, Stewart detailed her surprise over how little footage from her archive Cutler chose to use in the Netflix documentary about her.
She also said the filmmaker kept three cameras on his subject while shooting and that she was displeased with his production choices.

You come at the queen, you best not miss. After Martha Stewart spoke out against R.J. Cutler and his latest doc, Martha, the director was all but forced into defending himself. And in doing so, he also went to bat for the entire documentary filmmaking process.
Speaking on The Town podcast (via EW), Cutler said he and Martha Stewart had a collaboration of sorts during the documentary but their discussions would only play so far into the finished product. “Guess what? Martha saw the film and she told me what she thought about it. It wasn’t surprising to me that she would’ve made a different film that I made. She gave me her feedback, and she was upset that I didn’t make the changes she wanted to make. But this is the process.”

Martha Stewart didn’t exactly love the process of making a documentary about her life.
The celebrity chef stopped by the The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday to chat about director R.J. Cutler’s doc Martha, which covers the extraordinary life of Stewart through intimate interviews, never-before-seen photos, letters and diary entries.
When host Jimmy Fallon asked for her thoughts on the film, she responded, “Oh, yeah, the documentary is fine. It left out a lot, so I’m going to talk to them about maybe doing version two. Martha Stewart has been active in Hollywood for decades now. Having made a name for herself in more ways than one, the businesswoman, writer, and television personality has become a lot more than your average celebrity cook. She built an empire by delivering the American dream in a digestible manner while still keeping her personal life somewhat under wraps.

Editor’s Note: This review was originally published during the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival. Disney releases the film in select theaters November 15 before streaming on Disney+ starts December 13.
Near the end of R.J. Cutler and David Furnish’s documentary “Elton John: Never Too Late” John says, “It did take me 43 years to learn how to function as a human being rather than a rockstar.”
However, the film, which premiered in the Gala section of the Toronto International Film Festival, is far more interested in the rockstar part of John’s life than it is in the human being portion. Look, it makes sense, the glittering glamor of superstardom is inherently more attractive than the day-to-day monotony of just trying to get by. Still, with the access this doc has — Furnish is, after all, John’s husband — it feels like a squandered opportunity.
At its outset, “Never Too Late” sets up an intriguing structure.

Variety hosted its inaugural Doc Dreams NYC event on Nov. 12, featuring two panels with some of this award season’s top documentary feature contenders.
Speakers on the first panel included Carla Gutiérrez, director and editor of “Frida”; Irene Taylor, director and producer of “I Am: Celine Dion”; and R.J. Cutler, director and producer of “Elton John: Never Too Late.”
“I Am: Celine Dion” follows the Canadian singer’s musical journey and life-altering illness, the latter of which Taylor admitted she was not aware of prior to signing onto the project.
“I was so intrigued and encouraged by Celine herself when we had met and talked through the idea of a film,” Taylor said. “I think she was ready to spend the amount of time that a thorough biography with a living subject would offer.”
