One thing Douglas Adams taught us in "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" is this: Dolphins usually know what's up when it comes to visitors from outer space. They're ahead of the curve at the beginning of "Cocoon," too, which opens with the friendly marine mammals frolicking in a sunken city before witnessing strange lights beaming through the clouds.
Ron Howard's fourth feature shares similarities with "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," although the beats are different. Its focus is on a group of seniors hitching a ride with friendly aliens to avoid illness and mortality, rather than a guy who is quite happy leaving his kids behind for a fantastic UFO journey. It's one of that '80s micro-genre of sci-fi movies centering around elderly actors, which Steven Spielberg had a big hand in. "Kick the Can," his segment in "Twilight Zone: The Movie," followed a group of...

Death is inevitable. That’s a universal truth we all learn at a very early age and as we get older, the reality of that truism becomes more and more evident with each passing day. But what if you didn’t have to die? What if you could live forever? That wish fulfillment was precisely what a then up-and-coming filmmaker Ron Howard explored back in 1985 with his wondrous fable, Cocoon. It’s a remarkable film for many reasons, but what has always made it so memorable for me was the way Howard managed to create such a vivid, dignifying and endearing portrait of octogenarian life that demonstrated how the elderly can still enjoy a fulfilling existence even if the rest of the world no longer recognizes their vitality.
This month, Howard’s wondrously heartfelt fable turns 30 and it feels like the perfect time celebrate this remarkably unique film that defied the odds for many reasons,...

Scarlett Johansson gives a breathtaking performance as an alien femme fatale in Jonathan Glazer's mesmerising new movie Under the Skin.
Johansson's unnamed character inhabits the body of a young woman in order to lure male hitchhikers to their deaths, as she travels around Glasgow in her white transit van.
The silver screen has a long tradition of both spine-tingling and silly sci-fi seductresses, so prepare to be charmed by a few of our favourites below:
The Astounding She-Monster (1957)
"If you're not too afraid, make a date with a woman you'll never forget... a woman impervious to bullets....The Astounding She Monster!!!" warns the trailer for this 1957 sci-fi horror.
Shirley Kilpatrick played a beautiful yet highly-radioactive alien who lands on earth after accidentally crashing her spaceship. Unbeknownst to her, she's capable of killing with the touch of her delicate, bare hands, and begins stalking and unwittingly harming humans around her.

Cinematic aliens, for the most part, like to sow terror once they arrive in our midst -- think of the acid-blooded "Aliens," the people-mulching tripods of "War of the Worlds," the uber-hunter in "Predator," and "Gerard Depardieu."
Aliens that do come in peace are usually too otherworldly to be compatible for romance -- no one wants to date "Et." But every now and then, a humanoid alien lands, looking hotter than the two suns over Tatooine, and we can't blame anyone for wanting to visit the dark side of the moon with them.
Starting with Alex Pettyfer's gorgeous extra-terrestrial in "I Am Number Four" (now on DVD and Blu-ray), here are nine movie aliens we'd definitely hook up with -- as long as we could stay alive afterwards.
John Smith (Alex Pettyfer), 'I Am Number Four' (2011)

The summer of 1985. Has it really been twenty-five years. Wow! I don't really feel old, but its amazing that era was so long ago and yet the memories feel like yesterday. I was ten going on eleven and enjoying my summer break. Though my parents wouldn't let me leave my neighborhood with my friends, they always took me to the cinema as often as they could, which is where my love of movies comes from. I consider myself fortunate to have shared some great movie moments with my family and with my parents coming to town to visit me this summer, we hope to have some more.Hollywood still makes great movies today, but the eighties were a time when most of the movies you saw were good. At least they seemed to be good at that early age. Time can often be cruel and with maturity comes the revelation...

Ride With The Devil (Criterion) Ang Lee’s revisionist take on the Civil War is awash in moral ambiguity, along with some stunning cinematography, production design, and fine performances. Set during the Kansas-Missouri border war, Tobey Maguire and Skeet Ulrich star as two friends who join up with the Confederate-sympathizing Bushwhackers, finding an odd ally in a former slave (Jeffrey Wright). While it’s fascinating to see America’s bloodiest conflict through the eyes of a foreigner, thereby allowing much of the previously mentioned ambiguity a certain latitude, the film never loses the bad taste it leaves for one simple reason: it asks us, the audience, to side with not just the Confederates, but some of the lowest trash that made up the dregs, and the fringes, of the movement. Big points for audacity, but snake eyes on the story itself. Singer Jewel is impressive in her film debut.

Just because we Wanted something on the cover doesn’t mean it got there. For many reasons over the years, certain movies Didn’T get a Starlog cover—even though we sure hoped to give them one. Let’s start with three 20th Century Fox movies.
The first of these Fox films that got away is Cocoon in 1985, a contender for issue #98’s cover. Although released in June, Ron Howard’s Cocoon looked good for that August on-sale issue If we could find something special in the way of art (i.e. photos). At the time, we Were willing to use a movie on the cover two or so months after its premiere; this rule later changed. We still had Cocoon articles to run—like Kim Howard Johnson’s Steve Guttenberg chat and Ian Spelling’s first-ever-interview for Starlog (with Tahnee Welch). The problem? Fox couldn’t provide new Cocoon pix that worked for us.

British Paper Apologizes for Welch Drug Allegations
British newspaper The Mail On Sunday has apologized to actress Raquel Welch after claiming her daughter Tahnee had suffered a drug problem. Instead of negotiating through lawyers, the One Million Years B.C. beauty, 66, wrote to the London-based publication's Letters page from her Los Angeles home address. Welch said she was unhappy that a March feature on her in the newspaper's You magazine supplement claimed Tahnee "had once suffered with a drug problem." Welch writes, "The questionable source of this information appears to be one of those baseless rumors that surface on the internet and it's entirely untrue. As her mother, I can assure you that Tahnee has never, ever had a drug problem." In response, The Mail On Sunday published an apology, reading, "We are happy to report that our information was wrong and Tahnee Welch has never had any drug problem. We apologize for any embarrassment caused."...
