When it comes to the world of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, if there is one thing fans can expect, it is well-written characters. If a camera is pointed at a character for longer than two episodes, chances are that fans are in for one complexly motivated journey. This is a pattern that has followed through the spin-offs and has consistently impressed fans over the years.

When Daredevil: Born Again finally arrives on Disney+ next March, we're expecting a long overdue deep dive into the street-level corner of the MCU.
We know the Man Without Fear will cross paths with the likes of White Tiger and The Punisher, while various online scoopers have claimed the plan for Spider-Man 4 is for Peter Parker and Daredevil to do battle with The Kingpin.
If that happens, then we'd imagine the idea is to bring Wilson Fisk's story to a definitive close when he's defeated by his two greatest foes.
Lead star Charlie Cox recently teased plans for cameos in Daredevil: Born Again and Daniel Richtman has now "confirmed" rumours that Jacques "Jack" Duquesne (Tony Dalton) will appear in the series. Is he finally going to suit up as Swordsman? That remains to be seen.
The scooper also claims that there were once plans for Iman Vellani's Kamala Khan/Ms.

Daredevil: Born Again will finally deliver a deep dive into the street-level corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Spider-Man: Homecoming and Hawkeye gave us a glimpse into that, of course, but it's in this series that we'll see vigilantes in action.
The Punisher and White Tiger are both confirmed to appear and lead star Charlie Cox commented on the latter character's role during a recent appearance at Fan Expo Chicago.
"I mean, we don't follow any of the comic books in terms of story," he told fans (via Screen Rant). "We don't follow any of them closely, and there's a number of reasons for that. One, because if you follow a storyline closely, it becomes a foregone conclusion because everyone knows how it ends."
"Those of you who saw the leaked trailer from D23 may have noticed a couple of interesting characters come up - I didn't say it, you said it.

[This story contains spoilers for Echo.]
There are certain television shows that people within the entertainment industry all watch and admire, and one of those shows was Better Call Saul, the celebrated prequel-sequel to the almighty Breaking Bad. The number of influential filmmakers who watched Saul is at least a mile long (Steven Soderbergh, Guillermo del Toro, Darren Aronofsky to name a few), and the brass at Marvel Studios are all included in that group. So it was hardly a surprise when Marvel sought out Saul writer-producer Marion Dayre to lead the writers’ room of Echo, a mature miniseries that’s centered on Maya Lopez/Echo (Alaqua Cox), who was first introduced as Wilson “Kingpin” Fisk’s (Vincent D’Onofrio) deaf enforcer on Hawkeye (2021).
Under the tutelage of Saul co-creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould, Dayre became a two-time WGA Award-nominated TV writer. She first co-wrote season two’s “Klick,” which put Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks) on...

After six seasons and 53 Emmy nominations, including seven for Outstanding Drama Series, Better Call Saul has left us without a single win.
The critically acclaimed Breaking Bad prequel was nominated for seven Emmys tonight, including Outstanding Drama Series, Lead Actor for Bob Odenkirk as Saul Goodman, Supporting Actress for Rhea Seehorn as Kim Wexler, as well as Picture Editing, Short Form Comedy, Drama or Variety Series, Sound Mixing and two nominations in the Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series category for the “Point and Shoot” episode and series finale, “Saul Gone”, but came up empty for all.
The series somehow, despite its acclaim, never matched the awards success of the mothership series, which won 16 Emmys out of 58 nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series, four Lead Actor wins for Bryan Cranston, three for Aaron Paul in the supporting actor category and one for Anna Gunn for supporting actress.

Marvel villains often survive preposterous injuries, thanks to the malleable definition of mortality in the MCU. Characters like Kingpin, Red Skull, and Yellowjacket have all survived seemingly fatal incidents and returned in later installments. Spider-Man: No Way Home confirms that Green Goblin, Doc Ock, Electro, Sandman, and The Lizard all survived their deaths in previous movies through multiversal magic.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has a pretty loose sense of mortality, but some villains have survived preposterous injuries, only to reappear in subsequent installments. The phenomenon occurs throughout the MCU timeline, reviving fan-favorite characters through various means. Many of these actually have a comic book precedent, while others are rather spurious attempts to undo narratives after characters prove to be incredibly popular.

Walter White was lucky that Lalo Salamanca wasn't around during the events of Breaking Bad, as Lalo is a terrifying and unpredictable villain who would likely have thwarted Walter's operations. Lalo Salamanca's presence in Better Call Saul makes Gus Fring an even better villain, as Gus is forced to become more cunning. Better Call Saul provides deeper insight into the backstories of supporting characters from Breaking Bad, enriching their roles and further informing Walter White's transformation into Heisenberg.
Better Call Saul succeeds as a prequel because it offers a new perspective on Breaking Bad, and the spinoff series shows just how lucky Walter White (Bryan Cranston) is in the original show — and makes Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito) an even more terrifying villain. Saul Goodman's (Bob Odenkirk) spinoff takes place in two timelines: before and after Breaking Bad. It provides a framework that adds depth to the initial story, shining...

Gus is a calculating villain who instills fear through his calm, collected nature and careful planning. His silence can be more imposing than vocal threats. Lalo is an unpredictable antagonist who brings a sense of unease with his sporadic and chaotic actions. He acts on the fly and appears amused and joyful. While Lalo is skilled and can handle his own dirty work, Gus relies on reliable supporters like Mike and his other henchmen. Gus also has a keen sense of how to conduct business.
The Breaking Bad universe has many memorable villains, with Gustavo Fring and Lalo Salamanca being the standouts. Introduced in Breaking Bad season 2, Gus quickly became culturally regarded as an iconic villain, making the show's third and forth seasons wildly thrilling television. Jimmy McGill, the lead of Better Call Saul, is just as bad as Walter White from Breaking Bad, despite receiving more slack. While Walt becomes less relatable as he transforms into Heisenberg, Jimmy's intentions are often in the right place, but he still shows his dark side. Jimmy betrays his own family, ruins Kim's life, almost kills an old woman, and scams innocent people, proving that he is just as morally compromised as Walt.
Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad chronicle their main characters' journeys to becoming high-profile criminals, and Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk) often gets more slack than Walter White (Bryan Cranston). This isn't warranted, as the lead of Breaking Bad's prequel proves he's just as bad as Walt on numerous occasions. Better Call Saul enhances the story of Breaking Bad, answering questions and expanding upon the original series. The show reveals the origins and connections of various elements from Breaking Bad, such as the character Lalo, Saul's company "Ice Station Zebra Associates," and the animosity between Gus and Hector. Better Call Saul offers insights into the transformation of Jimmy McGill into Saul Goodman and depicts the fate of Saul after the events of Breaking Bad.
Not all prequels do justice to the series they spawn from, but Better Call Saul enhances the story told in Breaking Bad — and answers several questions raised by the original AMC show. In Better Call Saul, Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould dig into the backstory of the slippery lawyer Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk). They simultaneously expand upon Breaking Bad's world. Mark Margolis, the journeyman actor who turned in a commanding performance as the vindictive drug runner Hector Salamanca, a man of few words and a bell, on Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, has died. He was 83.
Margolis died Thursday at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City following a short illness, his son, actor and Knitting Factory Entertainment CEO Morgan Margolis, announced.
A protégé of Stella Adler who did double duty as the legendary acting teacher’s personal assistant, Margolis also stood out as the Bolivian henchman Alberto the Shadow in Brian De Palma’s Scarface (1983); as the gravelly voiced landlord Mr. Shickadance looking for the rent in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994); and, from 1998-2003, as the HIV-infected mob boss Antonio Nappa on HBO’s Oz.

TV shows often use narrative tricks to make it easy for the audience to predict a character's death, but some deaths still surprise. Character deaths can be shocking due to unexpected circumstances surrounding the death, not just because of the death itself. Any TV show, regardless of genre or tone, has the potential to surprise its audience with a dramatic twist involving a character's death.
No TV show is safe from at least one character’s death, but there have been many cases where a character’s demise has taken the audience by surprise, no matter how good or bad the character had been. TV shows often use the same narrative tricks that make it very easy for the audience to predict if a character will die and when, with one of the biggest red flags being when the show makes the character too likable so the audience becomes attached to them.

While Lalo Salamanca (Tony Dalton) is arrested and put on trial for the murder of Fred Whalen (James Austin Johnson) during season 5 of Better Call Saul, it’s easy to forget exactly who did Lalo kill and why, given that Whalen only appeared in a single episode from season 4. Introduced in the episode "Winner," Fred Whalen was an innocent bystander and TravelWire agent who happened to get caught in the middle of the war between the Salamanca drug empire and Gustavo Fring (Giancarlo Esposito). Despite having a minor role in season 4, Whalen created an opportunity for Fring to remove Lalo from his leadership role in the Salamanca drug empire.
In season 5 of Better Call Saul, Fring has Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks) implicate Lalo in Whalen’s murder during the episode "Wexler v. Goodman," placing Lalo in jail where he can no longer interfere with the expansion of Fring’s drug empire.

Once Bob Odenkirk and Rhea Seehorn both lost on their 2022 Emmy nominations for “Better Call Saul,” their show joined “Murder, She Wrote” in first place on the list of drama series with the most unsuccessful TV academy acting notices and no wins, at 13. With six regulars and seven guests on this year’s first-round ballot, the recently concluded AMC program could potentially double its current acting Emmy nominations total and comfortably surpass that of its parent series, “Breaking Bad” (17). However, if it at least reaches 19 and none of its 2023 contenders triumph, it will set a new record as the show with the most failed acting bids and no wins, regardless of genre.

Better Call Saul star Giancarlo Esposito has revealed his favorite Gus scene in the Breaking Bad prequel. During the events of Better Call Saul, Esposito's Gustavo Fring is trying to garner more power within Don Eladio's cartel, namely by pushing the Salamanca family out of business in New Mexico. However, this results in him having to face down multiple members of the family, including the Better Call Saul's Lalo Salamanca (Tony Dalton).
Speaking with Discussing Film, Esposito explained how his favorite Gus scene in Better Call Saul was from Better Call Saul season 6, episode 8, when Gus kills Lalo in the super lab construction site. He opened up about how he filmed the scene of Lalo kicking Gus down the stairs without a stunt double, suggesting this to series creator Vince Gilligan so the anger Esposito displayed in the scene was realistic. Check out Esposito's full statement below:

Giancarlo Esposito insisted that Tony Dalton kick him during a pivotal moment from Better Call Saul season 6. Though the Breaking Bad prequel mostly focused on Bob Odenkirk's character as he devolved into the unscrupulous criminal lawyer known as Saul Goodman, it also dove deeper into the cartel underbelly of Albuquerque through the return of Los Pollos Hermanos owner and drug kingpin Gus Fring in season 3. From Better Call Saul season 4 and onward, the dominant cartel storyline is the conflict between Gus and Lalo Salamanca (Tony Dalton), a character only briefly mentioned by Saul in Breaking Bad.
The conflict between the two comes to a head during Better Call Saul season 6 episode 8, when Lalo corners Gus in his laundry and forces him to reveal his planned underground meth lab. As they walk down the steps to the construction site, Lalo kicks Gus in the back. During a recent appearance on AwardsWatch,...

Better Call Saul completely changes the meaning behind Saul Goodman's famous Breaking Bad Nacho line, among other Better Call Saul Breaking Bad references. In the latter show, seeking criminal representation, Walter and Jesse kidnap Bob Odenkirk's Saul Goodman for a violent trip into the desert. Before he realizes who his captors are, Saul pleads, "It wasn't me, it was Ignacio. He's the one!" Following a spot of Spanish begging, he then asks, "Lalo didn't send you?" Thanks to Better Call Saul, audiences now know "Lalo" is Tony Dalton's Lalo Salamanca, and "Ignacio" is Nacho, played by Michael Mando.
They also know that Saul is invoking the name of two dead men – both Nacho and Lalo are killed during the final season of Bcs, seeming to make the line nonsensical. However, when considering what Saul would actually know at the time, the line makes a little more sense. Caught...

After debuting in 1963, the '70s were a time of huge change for The Avengers. During that decade, only ten heroes joined the team in some capacity - be it as full, reserve or probationary members. Such a small number of new recruits over an entire decade is a bizarre thought for fans today, but the ten characters who joined the Avengers in the 70s were a diverse bunch: cowboys, aliens, spies, mutants and former villains rounded out the ranks.
And while not every member stood the test of time, the '70s did see some huge names join Earth's Mightiest Heroes for the first time, including heroes who are now household names. Here are the ten new Avengers fans met from 1970-1979, ranked by how well they've held up in the decades since.

Since 2021, Giancarlo Esposito has held the distinction of being the most-recognized Black performer in the history of the Best Drama Supporting Actor Emmy category. After coming up short on all of his past nominations for “Breaking Bad” (2012), “Better Call Saul” (2019-2020) and “The Mandalorian” (2021), he now has a shot at finally triumphing on his potential third “Better Call Saul” bid. This would not only finally make the six-season AMC drama an Emmy-winning show, but would also make Esposito his category’s first Black winner.
Esposito’s appearance in the final season of “Better Call Saul” serves as the conclusion of a performance that had begun 13 years earlier on “Breaking Bad.” Although the newer series mainly functioned as a backstory for Jimmy “Saul Goodman” McGill (Bob Odenkirk), it naturally fleshed out many more featured “Breaking Bad” characters, including Esposito’s Gus Fring. “I think it’s finally my year,” are the famous last words of Eddie Munson in “Stranger Things,” but unfortunately actor Joseph Quinn will have to wait a little bit longer.
While, at this point, it feels like the kids of Netflix’s ’80s-set sci-fi series will be grandparents before Season 5, with the WGA strike delaying production and the general speed in which the Duffer brothers have delivered seasons. The "Dedicated to Max" Better Call Saul Easter egg is a dedication to a character previously introduced on Breaking Bad who holds special significance for Gus Fring. Situated at the center of a small and peaceful Mexican village is a luxuriously out-of-place yet tastefully designed memorial fountain with an inscription that reads “Dedicado A Max” or "Dedicated to Max." Though Better Call Saul gives no explanation as to what this means, clues are laid out in Breaking Bad that reveal more about the character of Gus Fring.
Gus Fring is introduced in Breaking Bad as a brilliant and ruthless drug kingpin who hides in plain sight thanks to his public persona as a successful and charitable business owner. However, Better Call Saul humanizes Gus Fring as the spinoff series dives deeper into his character and shows new aspects of her personality and motivations. Better Call Saul was always building toward the undoing of Gene Takavic (Bob Odenkirk), the final alias of Jimmy McGill, regardless of the huge impact that Lalo Salamanca (Tony Dalton) and Gustavo Fring (Giancarlo Esposito) had on Jimmy's transition into Saul Goodman. Better Call Saul defied audience expectations by resolving the pre-Breaking Bad timeline four episodes before the finale. This was a genius move by show creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould because it allowed them to zero in on what Better Call Saul was really about - Jimmy McGill's rocky road to redemption.
Ostensibly a prequel show, it quickly became apparent that Better Call Saul was better than Breaking Bad because it was a layered drama about incredibly complex characters. Chief among these characters was Jimmy McGill/Saul Goodman/Gene Takavic, who was torn between his desire to be honorable and his dreams of making it big. Jimmy's...

Spoilers for "Better Call Saul" follow.
In prequels, foregone conclusions are, well, foregone. The writers crafting the stories and the audiences watching them know ahead of time that the characters have to end in the spot where we first met them in the original story. Likewise, newly introduced characters who weren't in the original have to be taken off the board — sometimes lethally.
"Better Call Saul" acknowledges this from the beginning. The very first scene of the series actually takes place after "Breaking Bad" — former criminal lawyer Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) is in hiding, living as Omaha Cinnabon manager Gene Takovic. As I've written before, the show comes with the built-in tragedy that "Slippin' Jimmy" McGill, a plucky lawyer trying to go straight, will one day become the consigliere of Walter "Heisenberg" White (Bryan Cranston).
There are five major characters in "Better Call Saul" who were nowhere to be seen...

This will be its last chance as it contends for its final season’s second installment, which contains its concluding six episodes; will this be the year it finally wins something as the show bids farewell?
Last year for its first half of its final season, the legal crime drama garnered seven Emmy nominations, including Best Drama Series, Best Drama Actor for Bob Odenkirk (as Jimmy McGill/Saul Goodman/Gene Takovic), Best Supporting Actress for Rhea Seehorn (as Kim Wexler) and Best Drama Writing for Thomas Schnauz.

Bob Odenkirk could find himself in the rare Emmy air this year. AMC will submit Odenkirk’s new series, “Lucky Hank,” in comedy categories for this year’s Emmy competition, Variety has confirmed.
Of course, AMC is also submitting the final episodes of Odenkirk’s “Better Call Saul” in the drama fields. Should Odenkirk be nominated in both the best drama actor and best comedy actor races, he would become the first performer in history to be nominated in both genres in the same year.
Several performers have been nominated and even won Emmys as both drama and comedy leads — but never at the same time. It’s a possibility: Odenkirk has been nominated five times in the best drama actor category for “Better Call Saul,” and this will be his final opportunity to compete in that race for “Saul”. Meanwhile, Odenkirk has been known first and foremost as a comedy performer,...

Although Better Call Saul brought the story of the Breaking Bad universe to a close, there's still dramatic mileage in a spinoff focused on the early life of Gustavo Fring (Giancarlo Esposito) that could answer some important questions. Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan has stated that he's moving on to other projects, but would "never say never" to a return to the rich fictional world he and Saul co-creator Peter Gould created (per Variety). Given that both shows are held up as masterpieces of the crime genre, a second Breaking Bad spinoff series would need careful handling.
The stories of Jimmy McGill/Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk), Walter White (Bryan Cranston), and Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) may have ended, but there's still one enigma that neither Breaking Bad nor Better Call Saul ever resolved. The pre-Breaking Bad life of Gustavo Fring is an unsolved mystery that would provide enough fresh...
