Pablo Larraín’s strange and mordant drama portrays Callas’s haughty struggle as her voice begins to fail but her stardom remains undimmed
Angelina Jolie declaims an imperious performance as opera star Maria Callas in this strange, sad, mordantly witty film from screenwriter Steven Knight and director Pablo Larraín, showing her declining months in Paris in 1977; the lioness in winter succumbing with ecstatic defiance to illness and loneliness. Maria broods over her “medication” and neglects to eat, and she is impossibly difficult with the servants, housekeeper Bruna (Alba Rohrwacher) and valet Ferruccio (Pierfrancesco Favino), who are the aghast witnesses to her decline – and she is beginning to relinquish the idea that she will ever sing again. The whole thing is interspersed with pharma-fuelled hallucination-flashbacks to the days of her celebrity pomp, but also further back to her traumatised girlhood in Nazi-occupied Greece.
This film has had a mixed, sometimes frosty...

Angelina Jolie as Maria Callas in ‘Maria’ (Photo Cr. Pablo Larraín / Netflix © 2024)
A character study rather than biopic, Pablo Larraín’s Maria showcases Oscar winner Angelina Jolie’s acting prowess, capturing the opera singer’s dramatic highs and lows with captivating intensity and emotional depth. Told in three distinct acts, Maria is a bold reimagining of the latter years in Callas’ life – emphasis on “reimagining.” Those familiar with the soprano’s dramatic vocal style and mesmerizing performances will find writer Steven Knight’s take more fulfilling, while those new to her work may find the narrative less accessible.
Maria shuns the banner of realism, preferring a more fantastical approach. The drama focuses on the week prior to her death on September 16, 1977, with the retired singer attempting to rediscover the voice that made her famous. Flashbacks fill in the years when she was a hot ticket. But Larraín’s film doesn...

Plot: Famed opera singer Maria Callas retreats to Paris in the 1970s after a glamorous yet tumultuous life in the public eye.
Review: Pablo Larrain‘s loose trilogy about famous twentieth-century women, beginning with 2016’s Jackie and 2021’s Spencer, comes to a close with Maria. Based on the life of revered opera singer Maria Callas, Larrain’s biopic focuses on the least recognizable of the three women. That Callas’ notoriously short life is not as easily remembered compared to Jackie Kennedy or Princess Diana affords Maria the ability to examine the singer’s life from a vantage point that is less sterile and distant than the previous two films. With a direct connection to Jackie, Maria retains some of the languid pacing and uneven creative choices that prevented Larrain’s prior biopics from being as strong as they could have been. However, after solid performances from Natalie Portman and Kristen Stewart,...

Like his most celebrated novel “The Three Musketeers,” Alexandre Dumas’s iconic tale “The Count of Monte Cristo” has been adapted so often in so many different cultural contexts—from the silent era to the American blockbuster to the plethora of Indian interpretations—that it becomes easy to forget a critical element that defines the writer’s oeuvre: Dumas was, in fact, very French. Bringing the story back to its home country, directors Alexandre de la Patellière and Matthieu Delaporte choose to remind viewers of this essential reality by embracing the story in true French fashion, with a cheeky wit in the face of its own posh self-seriousness.
Having seen great success penning last year’s duology adapting Dumas’s most famous story, de la Patellière and Delaporte upgrade themselves to the directors’ chair for “The Count of Monte Cristo” as they relay the tragedy of Edmond Dantès, the prototypical framed man.

Fewer new openings but important ones for the indie world as the year soon to close welcomes the trio of Brady Corbet’s much-nominated The Brutalist with Adrien Brody, Pedro Almodovar’s first English outing The Room Next Door starring Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton, and a new rendition of revenge thriller The Count Of Monte Cristo. All three are starting in limited release.

Alba Rohrwacher made a point to step out of Angelina Jolie’s shadow with her role in Maria.
The 45-year-old Italian actress stars opposite the Oscar winner in filmmaker Pablo Larraín‘s biopic as Maria Callas’ housekeeper Bruna Lupoli. And while Rohrwacher says she already knew plenty about the renowned opera singer “because we are Italian,” it was the woman in Maria’s shadow in all the images she found while researching Bruna that captured her attention.
“I started to discover this incredible, tiny, elegant woman, which was Bruna Lupoli,” she tells The Hollywood Reporter. “What I could find about her was only the things that the other people say about her. And so I slowly built an idea and I started to discover her in all the images of Maria Callas and say, ‘Who is this woman behind her trying to hide herself?'”

Angelina Jolie has been a celebrated actor for a number of years. She is famous for both her on and off-screen life, as she was in a high-profile relationship with actor and former Mr. and Mrs. Smith co-star Brad Pitt for over a decade. Prior to this, Jolie was also known for winning Best Supporting Actress for her acclaimed role in Girl, Interrupted. She was also later nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress for the stirring family drama Changeling.
While she had a peak period in the 2000s, Jolie's career has slowed down a bit in recent years. In 2021, she made her MCU movie playing Thena in Eternals, but then did not act in any projects in 2022 or 2023. Her career also saw other feature film gaps. For example, the actor had another three-year gap between her 2016 voice acting role in Kung Fu Panda 3 and her starring role in...

Maria makes its intentions clear early. In September 1977, legendary opera singer Maria Callas (Angelina Jolie) is in her final days, and her grasp on reality is tenuous at best. She rearranges the world with herself at the center, though where once entire crowds were subject to her whims, now there remain only her loyal butler (Pierfrancesco Favino) and maid (Alba Rohrwacher). They worry over her declining health. By abusing her medication, she hallucinates entire conversations. She detests doctors, who feel compelled to disrupt her with their facts.

Angelina Jolie stars as Maria's eponymous character, Maria Callas, a renowned opera singer in the middle of the 20th century. The 2024 biographical psychological drama film, directed by Pablo Larraín and written by Steven Knight, follows the later years of Callas' life, which were mostly spent in Paris, France, away from the public eye. Callas experienced a lot of turmoil over the course of her 53 years of living. However, Maria director Larraín wanted to focus on the ending of the opera singer's story rather than chronicle every single detail of her life and career.
Maria is the final installment in Pablo Larraín's trilogy chronicling important women of the 20th century, following in the footsteps of Jackie (Jackie Kennedy) and Spencer (Princess Diana).

Netflix's 2024 biopic Maria features a strong cast led by Academy Award winner Angelina Jolie. Jolie, best known for her roles in films such as Maleficent, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, and Girl, Interrupted, returns in her first feature film since Marvel's 2021 action blockbuster Eternals. Jolie has also directed several films, such as First They Killed My Fathers (2017) and Unbroken (2014). Jolie took a break from acting from 2021's Eternals until 2024's Maria to focus on spending more time with her six kids, Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, and twins Knox and Vivienne.

In the ruins of postwar Naples, 1949 stands out as a crucible of survival when life emerges from the ashes of destruction. Celestina, an orphan, and her streetwise companion, Carmine, navigate a landscape rife with despair while also brimming with youthful vigour. Their bond, formed through adversity, encapsulates the essence of innocence amid chaos—a sad reminder of childhood’s ephemeral purity in a traumatized world.
Their disastrous stowaway adventure on the Victory steamship takes them into the immense unknown, a metaphorical ocean reflecting the stormy depths of the human psyche. As the children avoid the ship’s captain’s inebriated anger and deal with the sharp class disparity, the voyage becomes a liminal realm in which the limits of youthful innocence and the harsh realities of adult struggles blend. Each wave has existential weight, echoing the harsher realities of migration and identity.

The story of an Italian submarine commander who disobeyed orders from fascist leaders and rescued enemy sailors after sinking their ship
Here is a stolid second world war drama, directed by Edoardo de Angelis, taken from a patriotic true story of non-fascist Italian decency during the Battle of the Atlantic; it was made with the cooperation of the Italian navy and promoted to the status of opening gala at last year’s Venice film festival when Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers was withdrawn due to the writers’ strike.
Pierfrancesco Favino plays submarine commander Salvatore Todaro whose forthright courage, combined with a certain poetic sensitivity, inspires fervent loyalty from his men. He is also in continuous agony from a back injury which we see being treated at the film’s beginning; negligent doctors put him into a crude corset, telling him: “Fascism is pain.”...

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the scripts behind the year’s buzziest awards-season films continues with Maria, the Maria Callas snapshot-biopic starring Angelina Jolie. Pablo Larraín directed the screenplay penned by Steven Knight.
For Larraín and Knight, the Netflix movie reteams them after 2021’s Lady Di biopic Spencer, which earned Kristen Stewart a Best Actress Oscar nomination. Larraín’s 2016 movie Jackie, about Jackie Kennedy, also earned its star, Natalie Portman, an Oscar nom.
Jolie, already an Oscar winner, here plays the famed opera star as she retreats to Paris after a glamorous and tumultuous life in the public eye. The pic reimagines the American-Greek soprano in her final days as the diva reckons with her identity and life. In real life, Callas died of a heart attack at her Paris home in 1977 at age 53.

Pierfrancesco Favino, who plays Maria Callas’ protective butler in Pablo Larraín’s “Maria,” doesn’t back down from a fight, on-screen or in life.
At last year’s Venice Film Festival, the Rome native erupted with the kind of volcanic indignation that Callas was known for, furious that American actors like “House of Gucci” and “Ferrari” star Adam Driver kept getting cast as iconic Italians. Those parts should have gone to Italian actors, Favino argued at a press conference — though he was quick to add he had nothing against Driver.
With “Maria,” Favino gets the kind of quietly scene-stealing role that could show Hollywood what it’s been missing. In the meditative, slightly surreal drama, he plays Ferruccio, a loyal helpmate who caters to Callas by moving her grand piano around the apartment to whatever window she thinks has the best light that day, despite suffering from a bad back.

“My goal was to recreate and reach perfection in what the clothing was,” declares two-time Oscar-nominated costume designer Massimo Cantini Parrini (“Pinnocchio” and “Cyrano”) about “Maria.” For our recent webchat he adds, “Let’s not forget that Maria Callas is still an icon, and music lovers adore her, they love her, so my goal was also not to disappoint the audience,” he says, adding that it was “a huge responsibility, because I was going to take to the screen the clothing that Maria Callas wore during her performances in her operas, and I have to say that I am maniacal about details. I have to make sure that every single detail is taken care of. So I studied the proportions, the cuts the fabrics very, very closely.” Watch our video interview above.

Editor’s Note: This review was originally published during the 2024 Venice Film Festival. “Maria” opens in theaters November 27 before streaming on Netflix December 11.
The last and least familiar chapter in his trilogy of cloistered biopics, Pablo Larraín’s “Maria” is — like “Spencer” before it — a beautifully designed but sparsely furnished mind palace of a movie about a famous 20th century woman struggling to see herself through the inescapable glare of history’s spotlight. Where the opera star Maria Callas differs from Princess Diana or First Lady Jackie Kennedy in Larraín’s conception is that she desperately wants to be on (or return to) the public stage; her most authentic self is only complete with a loving audience.
The trouble is that “La Callas” has a tendency to be conflated with her characters. Tosca. Turandot. The exploited daughter. The unreliable diva. She is all of these things, but also none of them and so much more.

Over the last eight years, Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larraín has made a triptych of biographies about famous women, starting with Jackie, then Spencer, and now Maria. Starring Angelina Jolie as Maria Callas, one of the most iconic opera singers in all of history, Maria is incredibly intriguing, even if it is uneven. Although Maria suffers from pacing issues that could cause viewers to lose interest in the second act, its visual grandeur, strong performances, and ambitious thematic swings make it a worthy film.
Maria Review
Maria follows the iconic opera singer in the final days of her life in Paris as she reflects on her life. Like the rest of Larraín’s “melancholic” trilogy, Maria is far from your traditional biography. Although it tells the story of one of the most famous women of all time, it’s far more interested in the interiority of her experience than recounting the glory days of her life.

Angelina Jolie is set to receive the Performer Tribute at the 2024 Gotham Awards.
The event will take place Dec. 2 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City. The Gotham Film & Media Institute said the Oscar winner will be honored for performance as the legendary, but troubled, opera singer Maria Callas in Pablo Larrain’s upcoming film Maria.
“Like the legendary figure she portrays, Angelina Jolie transcends mere performance to craft something extraordinary. Her interpretation captures both Maria Callas’ complexity as an artist and the cultural resonance that defines an icon,” The Gotham executive director Jeffrey Sharp said in a statement.
Maria has already done a tour of the Venice, Telluride and New York film festivals. The biopic explores the final days of Maria Callas in 1970s Paris, as she fights to get back the iconic voice she has lost.

The final days, hours, and minutes in the life of Greek opera singer Maria Callas are reimagined to vivid effect in Pablo Larraín’s latest biopic in miniature, “Maria.” As the third and last film in his trilogy of doomed historical women, following “Jackie” and “Spencer,” “Maria” stars Angelina Jolie in the title role. It’s one that demanded seven months of training in the art of opera singing — though what’s ultimately in the Venice world premiere out this fall from Netflix is vocally a blend of Jolie’s more nascent chops with Callas’ iconic and inimitable pipes. Watch the trailer for the film below.
Jolie is widely tipped as a Best Actress Oscar nominee for her role as a pill-swilling, self-pitying, vocally fraying Maria Callas in a drama with dialogue that bites, thanks to screenwriter Steven Knight behind the wheel of Callas’ demise. When Callas’ sister (Valeria Golino...

“Maria” serves as the third entry in the unofficial trilogy from director Pablo Larraín about iconic 20th-century women during a specific period when they receded from public view. 2016’s “Jackie” examined the role Jackie Kennedy played in the aftermath of her husband’s assassination, and “Spencer” took a measured approach to the life of Diana Spencer before her official divorce from the future King Charles of England. To say that “Maria” is the least all-encompassing of this trilogy is not an insult, but rather a calculated choice on Larraín’s part. This isn’t the story about how the consciousness of a nation was thrust on the shoulders of a young woman, but rather a deconstruction of the artifice of celebrity.

Between Jackie, Spencer, and, now, Maria, Pablo Larraín has thrice committed the cardinal sin of taking a female icon of the 20th century and, in an attempt to hold a mirror up to her multitudes, flattened her into the equivalent of a kitschy postage stamp. Though his sense of style seems like an attempt to absolve him of indulging in the generic tendencies of the biopic, his dependence on repeating the same ideas with the same self-seriousness does a disservice to his supposed goal of bestowing a sense of agency on complex, hyper-surveilled icons of femininity. Too often, as in Maria, he conflates a woman moping around empty rooms to brash music with a more tactile notion of interiority or complexity.
So it’s a shame that Angelina Jolie—portraying Callas in the final week of her life, living somewhat isolated in an opulent Paris apartment—is relegated to playing by the Larraín rulebook.

A strange thing happens when lifelong artists begin to sense the light at the end of the tunnel. Some, like Francis Ford Coppola with "Megalopolis," have the freedom to go out on their own terms, guns blazing and critics be damned, with one of the most bombastic and extravagant works they've ever produced. Others, however, aren't nearly as fortunate. Time and trauma take their tolls, forcing even the greatest legends to contend with a much more complicated reality: the fact that their dreams no longer match reality. By the end, nostalgia crashes hard against resentment and triggers a deep-rooted pain directed towards the very talents that made life worth living in the first place.
Spanish filmmaker Pablo Larraín isn't even close to the finish line, of course, yet in many ways "Maria" feels like his most wistful and self-reflexive movie yet. After guiding both "Jackie" and "Spencer" to such high acclaim in recent years,...

They say that in life there are three guarantees: death, taxes, and that if there is a complicated woman in need of a stylishly done, painstakingly constructed biopic, then Pablo Larraín is the man to make it. Having sensitively explored the grief of Jackie Kennedy in the wake of JFK's death with 2017's Natalie Portman starrer Jackie, and then made a haunting portrait of Princess Diana's vulnerability with Kristen Stewart in 2021's Spencer, Larraín has enlisted the services of Angelina Jolie to help tell the story of fêted opera singer Maria Callas in the aptly titled Maria. Check out the first teaser for the film below:
"Maria, what do you want to sing?" asks a pianist as Jolie's Maria looks out on a grand, empty music hall. From there, we get shots of Callas – in black and white, on vintage film, in a plethora of gorgeous outfits...

Angelina Jolie stars as Maria Callas in the latest aching biopic from Pablo Larraín. Check out the Maria trailer.
Pablo Larraín truly is the king of biopics about sad women. His 2016 film Jackie, starring Natalie Portman as Jackie Kennedy, captured Jackie’s grief perfectly and in 2021, Larraín explored Princess Diana’s complex inner state with Spencer. Of course, the director has done a lot of other, equally excellent films but his latest, Maria, feels like the third part in an unofficial trilogy of films about women grieving.
Take a look at the Maria trailer.
Maria is set in picturesque Paris and explores some of the final years of opera singer Maria Callas’ life. The film had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival where it was warmly received. Maria will also screen as part of the BFI London Film Festival in October.

Angelina Jolie has transformed into the role of a lifetime, portraying legendary opera singer Maria Callas for Pablo Larraín’s latest biopic, “Maria.”
After Larraín helmed “Spencer” and “Jackie,” the auteur is now taking on the Greek opera star whose own life mirrored the dramatic tragedies she also brought to the stage. The film is set during the last days of the chanteuse’s life in 1977. She died of a heart attack at age 53.
“Maria” concludes Larraín’s biopic trilogy. To note, Callas and Jackie Kennedy both shared a lover in Aristotle Onassis, portrayed by Haluk Bilginer in “Maria.” Onassis famously left Callas to marry Kennedy.
Callas was a world-famous soprano singer and infamously had a feud with Renata Tebaldi. The Greek-American singer suffered from near-sightedness throughout her life and was referred to as La Divina or “The Divine One.”
