Kinji Fukasaku's last film was a production worthy of his lifetime achievements in the field, since “Battle Royale” caused much controversy; it was banned outright or deliberately excluded from distribution in several countries, but at the same time, it also influenced a great number of movies and many filmmakers, including Quentin Tarantino and “The Hunger Games”.

During his long career as a filmmaker, Kinji Fuksaku shot many classics, including the “Battles Without Honor and Humanity”-features, “Street Mobster” and “Graveyard of Honor”, to name but a few examples. However, especially in the Western world, all of these were outshone by “Battle Royale”, his last full effort as a director – a feature whose influence can be felt even today with directors such as Quentin Tarantino calling it his favorite film or film-series such as “The Hunger Games” being more or less modeled after Fukasaku’s original. While there is no denying the film has its iconic moments, with some of them having become parts of popular culture in their own right, it is maybe at its most controversial when being regarded as a political parable, a reading even the director himself seems to have supported if his last interviews are any indicator. However, despite the success of...

In the 15 years since his debut feature, Yu Irie has continued to thrive in the Japanese film industry’s indie scene. The sleeper hit that was “8000 Miles” saw the director win a couple of awards that have helped him bolster his filmography over the past decade. Having notably helmed the Tatsuya Fujiwara starring “Memoirs of a Murderer” in 2017 and worked sporadically in television, Irie brings to New York Asian Film Festival his seventeenth feature film, “Ninja Girl”.
The film, both written and directed by Irie, is a wicked black comedy, satire that asks the question, what would a ninja look like in the modern-day? While the answers often lead to hilarious results, Irie’s message is deeper than one might first think, as the film also tackles prevalent issues such as immigration and government corruption. The director took the time to discuss the film with us and let us in...

One cannot question the legacy of Kenji Fukasaku. Although internationally most known for his Yakuza films, he is one of those filmmakers who can not be placed into a particular preferred genre. In this way he is a precursor to modern directors with widely ranged filmography, e.g, Sono and Miike. His 2000 release, a controversial adaptation of an equally controversial novel by Koushun Takami, has become a cult classic and is considered one of his late masterpieces. In multiple later films, literature and most frequently in the gaming industry, “Battle Royale” is a major influence.

Another Decade with Takashi Miike is a series of essays on the 2010s films of the Japanese maverick, following Notebook's earlier survey of Miike's first decade of the 21st century.Being in league with Takashi Miike, taking the sensually arrayed and flayed curtains of flesh in stride, has a way of making one think of Claude Rains in Lawrence of Arabia: “It is recognized that you have a funny sense of fun.” When you make it your life’s work to decorate the insides of cinemas with the exploits of desperate, subhuman Yakuza, your idea of the business of law enforcement and especially your idea of heroism are bound to be just as warped as your sense of "fun". Miike’s cop movies are few and far between—he doesn’t get cops and he doesn’t much like them. There’s something about lying to people about the...

Osamu Dazai, born Shuji Tsushima, is one of the most well known figures in Japanese literature, with several hit novels, including “The Setting Sun” and “No Longer Human”. The latter, his last work released posthumously after his suicide, is considered to be his crowning glory and stands as the second highest-selling Japanese book of all time. Dazai himself had a very eventful life, dotted with his alcohol abuse, womanising ways and several suicidal attempts, all of which have been the inspirations of many representations in various forms of written and performed art, including films, manga, anime and more. The latest to tell his story is “Helter Skelter” director Mika Ninagawa. “No Longer Human”, as its Japanese title “Osamu Dazai and the Three Women” suggests, follows the latter part of his life and the three key partners that not only influenced some of his best works but also led to his ultimate demise.

If you’re a fan of gambling and sports betting movies (like the ones depicted with sbobet), then you have to watch Kaiji.
Never heard of it? It’s a Japanese live-action film based on a manga (Japanese comics) of the same name. Written by Nobuyuki Fukumoto, it’s a top-rated series in its home country.
The film is a trilogy, with the original movie Kaiji (in the U.K., it’s titled Kaiji: The Ultimate Gambler)released in October 2009. It stars Tatsuya Fujiwara in the lead role, a well-known Japanese actor who also starred in other anime adaptations such as Death Note and Battle Royale.
The producers of Kaiji released two other films in the series. They were Kaiji 2, released in 2011, and Kaiji: Final Game, in 2019. Both movies differ from the manga in terms of outcomes and choices made by Kaiji, but the settings and events remain roughly the same.

Any fan of manga or anime will know how they have taken on many forms and embraced a range of exciting and outlandish themes through the years.

Sports betting and casino gaming have been given a new lease of life thanks to the internet, with many online sites now offering a range of different experiences under one roof. Genesis Casino is a good example of this trend, as the site has breathed new life into classic gambling pastimes such as roulette, blackjack and slot machines. Based on the homonymous and extremely popular samurai-themed manga (by Nobuhiro Watsuki) and anime, this live-action trilogy is the one that actually instigated the phenomenon of elaborate adaptations, particularly because it was one of the first (and one of the most successful) to make evident that in order for these kind of movies to actually work, a large budget is a necessity.
In case you do not know the story (shame on you btw), the trilogy revolves around the adventures of Himura Kenshin, a ronin who has abolished his past as an assassin (under the name of Hitokiri Battosai) of the shogunate, after the Imperialist forces won the battle of Toba-Fushimi. As the first film begins, ten years have passed and Kenshin now wanders around carrying a katana with a reverse blade, essentially deeming it useless as a murder weapon, since he has vowed not to kill again.

It is a rare occasion when Takashi Miike directs an almost completely tame film, while it borders on surprise when you have Tatsuya Fujiwara, one of the most hyperbolic actors in Japanese cinema, exercising the same kind of restraint. For that only, “Sabu” is a unique entry in Miike’s filmography. Let us see, however, how it fares as a movie.
Made as a TV film to mark the 40th anniversary of Nagoya TV, “Sabu” is based on a novel by Shugoro Yamamoto, whose works also served as basis for “Red Beard” and “Sanjuro”. One of the harshest “themes” of Edo period, parents sending away their kids because they were not able to feed them, serves as the basis, as the titular character has suffered this fate in the hands of a papermaker. While still a kid, he meets Eiji, who has become an apprentice after being orphaned at a young age,...

Early last week, white British actor Ed Skrein joined the cast of Neil Marshall’s upcoming “Hellboy” reboot, a casting choice that was immediately derided for its whitewashing of Skrein’s character, a Japanese-American Marine named Ben Daimio (whose family tree includes no less than a famous Japanese spy and war criminal, who also appears in the John Arcudi and Mike Mignola comic book series). In short order, Skrein did something wholly remarkable: he dropped out of the project after learning about Daimio’s heritage.

The Japanese branch of Warner Bros has been investing for quite some time in the mainstream Japanese movie industry, mainly through the distribution of Takashi Miike’s and action films based on manga. I literally just finished the first episode of the brand new Erased anime on Crunchyroll the other day ! and now there is a trailer to a live action adaptation !
After the first episode you can already tell that Erased is pretty special (If you are a fan of Stein’s Gate then you will love this !).
The live action movie stars Tatsuya Fujiwara (Battle Royale, Death Note) in the lead role.
The film is scheduled to open in Japan on the 19th March.
Plot (Anime)
The story follows Satoru Fujinuma, a man who possesses an ability that sends him back in time moments before a life-threatening incident, allowing him to prevent it from happening. When his mother is killed, Satoru’s ability suddenly sends him back eighteen years to when he was still in elementary school, giving him the opportunity to prevent a kidnapping incident that took the lives of three of his classmates.

When we asked our staff to vote on the best comic book movie adaptations, we were afraid the results would consist only of superhero films. While there are many superhero movies listed below, it is great to see a bulk of non-Hollywood films appearing on the list as well. We set out to compile a list of 50 movies but as it were, we ended up with 5 ties, and so the list consists 55 films instead. Let us know if you think we missed something. Enjoy!

Remember writer/director Min-suk Kim’s 2010 thriller “Haunters?” The one about the guy can control your mind with his mind? Well, apparently Hideo Nakata thought Japan needed a remake of that flick. Because, you know, it was made so long ago. Enter “Monsterz,” a movie that features the weirdly ageless Tatsuya Fujiwara. I just saw this guy in “Straw of Shield” and was reminded why I love his work. Although I do have a soft spot for “Haunters,” I’m actually willing to give the Japanese remake a fair shake. I know, I know — how incredibly big and strong and dashing of me. I try. The premise is simple: A guy has the power to control the minds of others. Not surprisingly, he becomes obsessed with someone whose brain resists his powers. All sorts of stuff happens after that, as you may already have guessed. Anyway, here’s the official...

The first teaser trailer has arrived for the Japanese remake of 2010 South Korean film Haunters, starring Gang Dong-Won & Ko Soo. Not only does the new movie star fan favourite Tatsuya Fujiwara (Battle Royale), but it also marks the return of Hideo Nakata (Ringu). Now obviously, it's been a long time since Hideo Nakata had a big hit, with each successive movie proving more and more disappointing, but surely it's about time the Japanese horror maestro had a return to form? Either way, we'll be keeping a close eye on this one. Filming began in July 2013, and a release date is pencilled in for May 30th 2014 back home. Synopsis: A man (Tatsuya Fujiwara) possesses a special ability to manipulate others with just his eyes. Because of this special ability, he killed his abusive father and was abandoned by his mother. He now lives a lonely life in the dark side of a city.
