Awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal (the highest award other than the Victoria Cross that can be awarded to non-commissioned flight crew) as an air gunner with No. 10 Squadron during WWII. The medal was one of several that were stolen by thieves from the Yorkshire Air Museum near York in November 2014.
