It’s terrifying when SNL impressionists have to face their real-people targets in a controlled environment. Before Mark Wahlberg confronted Andy Samberg on an episode of Saturday Night Live, he let the world know he wasn’t happy about Samberg’s impression. “I’m going to crack that big fucking nose of his,” Walhberg told Jimmy Kimmel in 2008. “Then I’m going to tell him, ‘Say hi to your mother for me.’”
Considering it was live television, Samberg escaped his brush with Wahlberg without injury. But Laraine Newman had no such guarantees when Barbra Streisand wanted a word in private. In Season Two, Newman performed a devastating parody of Streisand songs in a medley titled “Me”:
All the critics hated my new movie
A Star is Born was self-indulgent, they agree
‘Cause in the film
I’m practically
The only one you ever hear or see
I’ll admit...

While Saturday Night Live’s mandatory underwear directive is well documented, one of the show’s unwritten rules, it would seem, is to avoid being an asshole to boss Lorne Michaels at all costs. Actually, come to think of it, that’s probably a good rule of thumb for any job.
During The Howard Stern Show’s Stern-less SNL “roundtable special,” former cast member Bobby Moynihan shared a story about the time he inadvertently did his Lorne Michaels impression in front of Michaels while telling an anecdote during a pre-show cast dinner with the week’s guest host. “It got really quiet for a second, and he just went, like, ‘Continue,’” Moniyhan recalled.
But that was nothing compared to the time that one cast member blatantly, and hilariously, disrespected the producer. “I was sitting next to Mark McKinney when he pretended to fall asleep,” Ana Gasteyer explained. “Like pretty obviously,...

Martha Stewart could’ve hosted Saturday Night Live after she spent time behind bars.
The entrepreneur and television host said that she was invited to host SNL in 2005 after spending give months in prison for lying about a stock trade but her parole officer stopped her from doing the show.
“I wanted to and they asked me as I was coming out of Alderson — that camp that I was in for a while,” Stewart joked on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon. “And my parole officer wouldn’t give me the time to do it.”
Stewart noted that she was only allowed to be out of her house eight hours a day.
“The parole officer said, no?” Fallon asked Stewart which prompted her response, “No, that bastard!”
Stewart added that she still had the name and number of her parole officer, adding, “I’m so pissed,” about not being able to do it.

For many celebrities, there's a relatively small window in which they are considered for hosting Saturday Night Live. One celebrity had that window slammed shut, not by SNL, Lorne Michaels, or the network, but by their parole officers.
Television personality Martha Stewart revealed Lorne Michaels asked her to host Saturday Night Live in 2005. The SNL boss likely wanted to capitalize on the timing, as Stewart had just been released from serving five months in prison for a fraud conviction.
"I wanted to, and they asked me as I was coming out of Alderson, that camp I was in for a while,” Stewart said on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. “And my parole officer wouldn’t give me the time to do it … That bastard! I still have his name and his number.”
According to Stewart, the parameters of her parole limited her time outside of the house to eight hours per day.

Martha Stewart has obviously had a very successful career, changing the way we view both the lifestyle industry and the Comedy Central roast industry.
But despite all of her accomplishments and undeniable cultural contributions, the 83-year-old star has never once hosted Saturday Night Live. But that doesn’t mean that she hasn’t been invited to host. As Stewart recently told Jimmy Fallon, Lorne Michaels asked her to host the show decades ago, but unfortunately, she was legally prevented from doing so.
“I wanted to, and they asked me as I was coming out of Alderson — that camp that I was in for a while,” Stewart explained. Of course, the “camp” in question was a federal prison camp, where Stewart served a five-month sentence beginning in late 2004. “My parole officer wouldn’t give me the time to do it,” Stewart recalled. “I was allowed to be out of my house eight hours a day,...

Martha Stewart has revealed that she was once asked to host “Saturday Night Live,” but her parole officer wouldn’t allow it.
During an appearance on “The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon” on Monday, Stewart said she got the call from Lorne Michaels after her release from prison in 2005. Stewart served five months at the Federal Prison Camp in Alderson, W.Va after being convicted of fraud in relation to the ImClone stock trading case.
“I wanted to, and they asked me as I was coming out of Alderson, that camp I was in for a while,” Stewart said of hosting the iconic sketch show. “And my parole officer wouldn’t give me the time to do it … That bastard! I still have his name and his number.”

Fans hoping for a Desperate Housewives revival might have to content themselves with Marcia Cross’ 15-second reprise as Bree Van de Kamp in a new French advertisement for a television festival. Many other TV stars have slipped into familiar roles for advertisements — including actors from Saturday Night Live, The O.C., and Modern Family in the past 12 months alone. See those examples and many more below. Marcia Cross for SeriesMania More than a decade after the end of Desperate Housewives, Cross once again donned Bree Van de Kamp’s apron in a 2025 promotion for the Series Mania TV festival. In the spoof, Cross’ Bree gives advice to her French counterpart, played by festival director Laurence Herszberg in drag. There's no denying that Selina Meyer is among television's best worst characters of all time. You're rooting for her, but she's kind of awful... but then she's funny and somewhat well-meaning... but then she does something unforgivable. It's all within the ethos of Veep, one of TV's greatest comedies.
As a self-centered and power hungry (whether she would admit it or not) politician, Selina's savage in her quest to become the first woman elected President of the United States. Each season of HBO's Emmy Award-winning comedy series starring the brilliant Julia Louis-Dreyfus charts Selina's ups, downs, and inevitable even worse downs as she does whatever it takes to achieve her goals.
Following its run on HBO between 2012 and 2019, fans continue to rewatch Veep over and over. No one could have known how true to life some of its more outlandishly hilarious plots would become. But after watching Veep for the hundredth time,...

Before Laraine Newman brought it to Saturday Night Live, the valley girl accent was relatively obscure, really only known to Southern Californians as the way surfers spoke. As an L.A. native, though, Newman was very familiar with it, and so, she used it for inspiration for a character she developed named Sherry, a rambling, airheaded blonde who loved to talk about her “bitchin’ bod.”
She originally performed the character at The Groundlings, but she took Sherry — and the valley girl dialect — national when she became an original “Not Ready for Prime Time Player” in 1975 (in a sketch about group therapy that also included Don Corleone). In turn, Sherry became one of Newman’s best-known SNL characters. But because Newman never wanted to repeat herself, she only did Sherry for about a year, a decision which, 50 years later, she’s still unsure about.

With all the hype surrounding its 50th anniversary season, someone was due to stand out on Saturday Night Live this year. Marcello Hernandez seemed primed to take the spotlight. Maybe Chloe Fineman would finally be crowned queen. Sarah Sherman? Ego Nwodim? One of the new featured players? But an unexpected comedian has become the season’s breakout star: Dana Carvey.
Yeah, that Dana Carvey.
It was an unexpected giggle in the season premiere when Carvey dropped in unexpectedly as the show’s ninth (ninth!) Joe Biden impersonator. Predictably, Carvey nailed the guy in ways that more precise impressionists like James Austin Johnson couldn’t. “Guess what? And by the way…” became Biden shorthand in the way that Carvey’s “Nah ga da it!” defined George Bush. Maybe Carvey wasn’t throwing 100 mph anymore but he still had enough of a fastball to deliver quality innings during election season.

As “Saturday Night Live” prepares to commemorate its 50th season, comedian Will Ferrell looks back on the show that launched his career and defined an era of American comedy. Ferrell, a cast member from 1995 to 2002, hailed his experience on the legendary sketch show as “the hardest but most fun job” he’d ever had.
In a recent interview, the Emmy-winning actor discussed the long-term impact of his seven years on the show. He commended “SNL” for its distinctive ability to capture cultural moments week after week. “It’s an amazing thing that you have this live television show that continues to put its finger on the pulse of what we’re all thinking about,” Ferrell told the crowd. He praised the show’s creator, Lorne Michaels, for its unique format and long-lasting success.

Saturday Night Live’s upcoming 50th anniversary special will no doubt bring back a number of past characters, as long as they weren’t played by Joe Piscopo or Jim Breuer, we assume. The show doesn’t air until February, but SNL’s nostalgia-fest has already begun. Yes, two beloved cast members just revived two beloved SNL characters — but it was all in the service of promoting a credit card company.

A classic Saturday Night Live sketch from the 1990s gets resurrected for a new commercial, with two original stars returning alongside Samuel L. Jackson. Over the course of the show's 50-year run, a number of iconic sketches have come and gone, including 1998's "The Delicious Dish," which sees Ana Gasteyer and Molly Shannon serving as NPR hosts while Alec Baldwin's character, a baker, joins the show to discuss his famous holiday treat, "Schweddy Balls." The conversation that follows is full of sexual innuendo, with Baldwin memorably saying, "No one can resist my Schweddy balls."
In partnership with Capital One, SNL now shares a new commercial that resurrects "The Delicious Dish," with Gasteyer and Shannon both reprising their roles as NPR hosts. Baldwin doesn't return, with Jackson instead taking his place, but the ad features the same style of innuendo as the original. Gasteyer, for example, at one point asks...

This past Wednesday, Gasteyer appeared on the “Las Culturistas” podcast, which is hosted by SNL cast-member Bowen Yang and comedian Matt Rogers. While there, she discussed an appearance Diddy made back in May 1998.

Saturday Night Live – the late-night playground where anything can happen when comedy meets chaos. One could say that SNL is the wild child of TV – unpredictable, hilarious, and sometimes delightfully off the rails. However, no matter how smooth and fun things may seem on our screens, there is always behind-the-scenes drama accompanying it, like the time Diddy had an absurd demand for his rehearsals.

Currently awaiting trial in jail, Diddy’s popularity has taken a plunge thanks to all the lawsuits and accusations against him but there was a time when the industry mogul had the world wrapped around his finger. So, when he was all set to be the musical guest on SNL in 1998, he demanded a complete closed set for his rehearsals. Unfortunately for him, Will Ferrel was not in the mood to respect Diddy’s odd wish.

Before federal agents arrested hip-hop mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs in September 2024, the star was known as one of the biggest names in the music industry. Combs appeared on Saturday Night Live in 1998 to perform as the musical guest. Unfortunately, those who worked with Combs at the time don’t have fond memories of their experience. Here’s what SNL‘s Ana Gasteyer said happened when Will Ferrell crashed Combs’ rehearsal.
Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs had an air of ‘faux importance’ as the musical guest on ‘Saturday Night Live,’ Ana Gasteyer said
Sean “Diddy” Combs was the musical guest on Saturday Night Live in 1998. Combs’ career took off in the late ’90s, as his debut album, No Way Out, was released in July 1997. In 1998, Combs took home Grammy awards for Best Rap Album and Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for “I’ll Be Missing You.” This was just the...

Ana Gasteyer figures she encountered only five a-holes in her six years at Saturday Night Live, she said this week on the Las Culturistas podcast. The way she could tell? “They would be like, ‘So-and-so is in the building, everybody stay in your dressing rooms!'”
That’s exactly what went down the week Sean “Diddy” Combs showed up as a musical guest in 1998. “He, of course, shut down the whole building,” she said. “Which is applicable if you’re a presidential candidate. But apart from that, really it’s my house. He demanded a totally closed set.”
In 1998, SNL was also Will Ferrell’s house. Gasteyer remembers how Ferrell, as a goof, would walk around as a character named Ron. “They were like, ‘Wouldn’t it be so funny if Ron just went in?’” she said — and that’s just what Ferrell did. “He went on down the stairs,...

Saturday Night Live alum Ana Gasteyer is telling a Sean “Diddy” Combs story.
Back when Ana was in the cast, the disgraced entertainer acted as a musical guest for the May 9, 1998 episode and demanded he have “a totally closed set” while he rehearsed.

Ana said, while appearing on Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers’ “Las Culturistas” podcast, “You can tell the five as-holes in the six years that I was there when they would be like, ‘So-and-so is in the building. Everybody stay in your dressing rooms!’ Which is applicable if you’re a presidential candidate, but apart from that, it’s really my house.”
A few writers noted Combs‘ request and instead, suggested: “Wouldn’t it be so funny if Ron just went in?” The “Ron” the writers were referring to is Will Ferrell, who was in costume as his character “Ron” from the “Mango” sketches.

“Saturday Night Live” alum Ana Gasteyer reflected on her six-year stint on the show on the latest episode of Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers’ “Las Culturistas” podcast, recalling a time when her fellow cast member Will Ferrell interrupted Sean “Diddy” Combs’ closed rehearsal as part of a bit.
Gasteyer was on “SNL” from 1996 to 2002, where she overlapped with Ferrell, Molly Shannon, Jimmy Fallon, Tina Fey, Maya Rudolph and others. She’s best known for being part of the “Schweddy Balls” sketch alongside Shannon and Alec Baldwin, as well as her recurring Culps skit with Ferrell.
Gasteyer told current “SNL” player Yang and Rogers that the cast at that time had several recurring bits, including one where Ferrell repurposed his Jerry Reed costume to imitate a crew member named Rob, who had recently been fired by the director of the show’s pre-taped segments. In 1998, when Combs was the show’s musical guest,...

Following her 1996-2002 tenure at Studio 8H, Ana Gasteyer saw a fair share of diva behavior, particularly from Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs.
The Saturday Night Live alum recently recalled the May 9, 1998 episode of the NBC sketch comedy show, for which a high-maintenance Diddy served as the musical guest, demanding “a totally closed set” during his rehearsal.
“He of course shut down the whole building. You can tell the five a—holes in the six years that I was there when they would be like, ‘So-and-so is in the building, everybody stay in your dressing rooms!'” said Gasteyer on the Las Culturistas podcast. “Which is applicable if you’re a presidential candidate. At first glance, “Martha Stewart’s Home for the Holidays” appeared to be a promo for a regular Martha Stewart special — until the subtitle popped up that read, “Topless Christmas Special.” From there, Stewart did a variety of normal, Martha Stewart-type things, like setting a holiday table and making beeswax candles. The only difference was that she was nude from the waist up, with a black censor bar covering her breasts.
Starring Ana Gasteyer as Stewart, “Martha Stewart’s Home for the Holidays: Topless Christmas Special,” is one of SNL’s most beloved holiday sketches. It was co-written by Gasteyer and writer Norm Hiscock, the latter of whom recently jumped on the phone with me to talk about the making of a true holiday classic.

‘I’ll Do It If She’s Topless’
The way the sketch began was that Ana Gasteyer was looking to do a sketch with Martha Stewart.

Mean Girls is a movie that needs no introduction. The Tina Fey-penned 2004 movie about Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan) transferring to an American high school after years of being homeschooled by her parents on another continent, then attempting to help her new friends take down the clique of popular girls, is jam-packed with iconic lines and moments that have earned it a reputation as a teen comedy classic. What defies logic is that, in spite of this, there is indeed more to dig into while celebrating the movie on its 20th anniversary.

As Punkie Johnson, Molly Kearney and Chloe Troast know all too well, most departures from Saturday Night Live happen with little fanfare or recognition — a few paragraphs in The Hollywood Reporter during the show’s off-season and you’re gone for good. The show’s early cast members didn’t get much of a send-off either, but in recent decades, Lorne Michaels has occasionally tipped his cap to exiting cast members who served the show well.
Here are five of the show’s most heartfelt farewells…
1 Will Ferrell
Ferrell’s goodbye was the first in which cast members appeared as themselves to say au revoir. Over sentimental music, viewers heard from cast members like:
Ana Gasteyer: “I worked with Will for six years, and it was more fun than anything I’ve ever done.”Jimmy Fallon, telling on himself: “It was hard for me to work with Will because...

Late night show hosts don't want to admit this, but they have certain guests they'd rather not interview. Stephen Colbert and Seth Meyers have a mutual guest they banned in the past, Donald Trump. As for Conan O'Brien, he also banned a prominent Hollywood name. Though in fairness to Conan, the ban didn't last and the actor admits to spiraling at the time.
Conan didn't tell this story. Instead, it was the banned guest, Dax Shepard himself, who revealed the painful details as to what went on during their forgettable conversation.
Credit to Dax Shepard as, despite the struggle, he managed to turn his career around with one of the top podcasts in the world. Adding to that, he's also a joy to interview, as evidenced by his recent chat with Seth Meyers.

The fun news that Saturday Night Live hired three new comics yesterday was dampened by another casting surprise — the departure of last year’s new featured player, Chloe Troast. While few were surprised by the exits of Punkie Johnson (she had struggled to break through for four seasons) and Molly Kearney, Troast showed tremendous promise in sketches that featured her powerful singing voice and offbeat comic sensibilities.
While Johnson and Kearney were vague about the reason behind their departures, Troast made it clear in her Instagram post that the decision was not hers. “Unfortunately i was not asked back to SNL this season. I wish I was going to be back with all the amazing friends i made there, it truly felt like home. But it wasn’t in the cards.”
Current and former Saturday Night Live cast members responded with kindness.

It looks like “fetch” really is not going to happen, and Lacey Chabert, who memorably portrayed Gretchen Wieners in the teen classic Mean Girls, should stop trying to make it happen — according to her daughter, who naturally had no idea what the term referenced.
The Hallmark actress, who is parent to 8-year-old daughter Julia along with husband David Nehdar, told the Today show’s Hoda Kotb, “When she was younger, she was like, ‘What’s fetch, why does everyone say that to you?'”
“She asked me a couple years ago, ‘Mom, do other people watch those movies that you make?’ And I was like, ‘Yes, baby, they’re not just for you,'” she said, wrapping up the amusing anecdote.
Of course, fans of the 2004 Tina Fey hit will remember Gretchen’s unsupported efforts to make a slang word popular. In one scene of the film — which hilariously traces...
