Write what you know, as the saying goes — so if you don’t know it, do the research. A young Londoner takes on that task and goes through the digital looking glass in Finnish-British writer-director Mikko Mäkelä’s “Sebastian,” now in limited release from Kino Lorber after premiering at Sundance earlier this year. Titled after the pseudonym that aspiring novelist Max (Ruaridh Mollica) employs when propositioning himself for other men, this adamantly morose drama keeps a close eye on its lead as he navigates his intimacy issues. But despite the film’s confident naturalism, it seems less intimate as it goes on, with Max somehow growing more distant and generic as he becomes more comfortable in his own skin.
By day, Max makes his way as a freelance writer, turning in half-hearted features for a culture magazine. He tinkers away at short stories and idolizes Bret Easton Ellis (whose own...

There are few forms of artistry quite as taxing as stop motion animation. Making tiny adjustments one after another, it can take days to complete just a minute of film. incredible patience and obsessive attention to detail are required. What’s more, it’s practically impossible to finance these days, unless you’re already considered a genius, deserving of support purely for the sake of the creation itself. Ella’s mother (Stella Gonet) has such a reputation, but due to arthritis in her hands, she can no longer do the physical side of the work herself. Ella (Aisling Franciosi) – whom she calls poppet – does that for her, serving as her puppet. But what happens to the puppet when there’s no-one left to pull the strings?
When her mother is hospitalised in what is clearly an end of life situation, Ella is distraught. She can still recognise, however, that this could be an opportunity.

English animator Robert Morgan has deservedly accrued a shelf of awards over the past quarter-century or so for shorts like “The Cat With Hands,” “The Separation” and ickily awesome “Bobby Yeah.” Their macabre, surreal nightmares are at once threatening and oddly winsome, with a sinister aesthetic equally redolent of the Brothers Quay, early David Lynch and the painter Francis Bacon — all of whom count among the director’s admitted influences.
He’s been in no hurry to adopt a longer format, and his first feature underlines the wisdom of that reluctance. Not unprecedented among his work in its mix of animated and live-action elements, “Stopmotion” demonstrates the difficulty in stretching such a singular, fantastical sensibility to suit a full-length project’s storytelling requirements.
This “Repulsion”-like tale of a fragile young woman’s descent into madness, starring “The Nightingale’s” Aisling Franciosi, arrests attention with its vivid, escalating eruptions of grotesque imagination.

Horror often presents a literal interpretation of artists giving themselves over to their art, whether through supernatural suffering or psychological unraveling. Stopmotion, the feature directorial debut by BAFTA-nominated filmmaker/animator Robert Morgan, chooses the latter. While it may adhere to a familiar path of an artist’s unraveling, Morgan finds inventive and creative ways to mine visceral horror through the uncanny, unsettling nature of stop-motion animation and its painstaking process.
Ella Blake (The Nightingale‘s Aisling Franciosi) is a talented stop-motion animator who longs to escape the shadow of her mother, Suzanne (Stella Gonet), a reputable legend in the world of stop-motion animation. With Suzanne’s health deteriorating and her hands no longer functional, Ella’s artistic aspirations are put on the backburner as she’s forced to tend to her ailing but overbearing mom and act as her hands through the meticulous work of stop-motion. In Robert Morgan’s feature-length debut, Stopmotion, animator Ella Blake (Aisling Fransciosi) vows to finish the work of her ailing mother, Suzanne (Stella Gonet). She shuts herself away from the world in an old apartment building, in total dedication to the painstaking process of moving sculpted figures a centimeter at a time. But she soon begins a new work altogether at the behest of a spooky little neighbor girl, only for the unsettling art they create and Ella’s perception of reality to bleed together. Pity, though, that they don’t bleed together enough, as the macabre dream logic that many of Stopmotion’s sequences employ is too often undermined by plot rhythms familiar from so many horror films about trauma.

"Do you want to hear the next bit of the story?" IFC Films has revealed an official trailer for Stopmotion, a very strange and peculiar indie horror film from English filmmaker Robert Morgan. This first premiered at both Fantastic Fest 2023 and the Sitges Film Festival last year, where I originally saw it. Yes, there is stop-motion animation work in this, though it's really a story about a woman who is creating a film. Ella Blake, a stop-motion animator struggling to control her demons after the loss of her overbearing mother, embarks upon the creation of a film that becomes the battleground for her sanity. As Ella's mind starts to fracture, the characters in her project take on a life of their own. Then it gets really weird! "An unnerving display of psychological horror reminiscent of Censor (2021)." IFC also adds that this features "truly unforgettable, Švankmajer-esque animation." Aisling Franciosi stars as Ella,...

Pablo Larraín’s primary mode is deconstruction, of everything from genre to myth to ideology. But given its intensely subjective point of view, El Conde shares more in common with Spencer and Jackie than the filmmaker’s earlier investigations into Chile’s tumultuous past, Post Mortem and No. The film seeks to dispense with the historical record and imagine what happens behind closed doors. Of course, there’s one important difference here: El Conde is certainly no stickler for verisimilitude, as the Augusto Pinochet (Jaime Vadell) of this film is a morose vampire fasting from blood in order to ease himself into death.
That premise might suggest that Larraín has sympathy for the devil, but El Conde is no hagiography. The film renders Pinochet as an aging, ever-prattling child of sorts, who no longer wants to live in a Chile that has no appreciation for all his “great work,” nor...

When FX announced late last month that its hit comedy series Breeders was ending, we didn't anticipate the trailer for the fourth and final season would have this much closure.
FX went public with the Breeders Season 4 trailer on Wednesday, and it's filled with bombshells about your favorite characters.
Before we get into the revelations, we should probably remind you that there's a five-year time jump by the time the series returns.
Paul and Ally are left blindsided when Luke reveals he's leaving the family home because his girlfriend is pregnant.
The teenager is ready to embrace the new chapter of his life away from the prying eyes of his family.
Ava reveals that she has feelings for her grandad's hairdresser, which leaves the family with many questions.
And it wouldn't be Breeders without some drama from Paul and Ally.

Throughout her life, Queen Elizabeth II was a constant presence on screen.
The British monarch was portrayed, evoked, parodied and mimicked in everything from wacky comedies (The Naked Gun)to psychological dramas (Spencer).
But she was not the only royal to have graced the world of Hollywood.
Since its inception, the film industry has revelled in tales of royal exploits, whether that’s in period dramas or more contemporary biopics.
While foreign monarchs have also provided ample inspiration for Hollywood scriptwriters – think Marie Antoinette or Coming to America – the most lucrative source material has always seemed to be the British monarchy.
Here’s a rundown of eight of the best royal films.

Scottish actor who played the monarch in recent film Spencer on what she learned about the Queen from the experience
Stella Gonet played the Queen on the big screen in Pablo Larraín’s Spencer, a drama set over Christmas in Sandringham in 1991, starring Kristen Stewart as Diana. Gonet reveals how she channelled the monarch for the role – and what other people’s reactions taught her about the real woman.
As soon as I’d come out of makeup with the wig on, people changed totally towards me. It was extraordinary. “Can I get you anything? Can I do anything for you? Are you all right?” Normally people are very tactile with me but they’d suddenly move out of my way. There was just immediate respect. It was as if I was on a little horse that meant they couldn’t get too close.

Queen Elizabeth II was the first British monarch to become a film and television character while she was still on the throne. Raucous historical romps about Henry VIII and Elizabeth I were all very well, but showing what a living king or queen got up to behind closed palace doors? That was another, almost treasonous matter. Even as recently as 1991, when Prunella Scales starred in a BBC film of Alan Bennett’s National Theatre play “A Question Of Attribution,” Bennett said “it still feels quite bold to portray her in the flesh.” And the practice was still contentious enough in 2020 for the UK’s then Culture Secretary, Oliver Dowden, to ask Netflix to put a disclaimer on screen before every episode of “The Crown,” explaining that the show was not actually a documentary.
But like so much else during Elizabeth II’s uniquely long reign, the protocol changed to a...

"Will they kill me?" That's the chilling question Princess Diana (Kristen Stewart) asks in the new trailer for Spencer, released on Sept. 23. In the two-minute preview, viewers see Diana arriving at Queen Elizabeth II's (Stella Gonet) Sandringham Estate for Christmas festivities with the royal family. While this should be a joyous time for all, tensions between Diana and Prince Charles (Jack Farthing) are at an all-time high. "You have to be able to do things you hate," Charles tells Diana in the trailer. "There has to be two of you. There's the real one, and the one they take pictures of, Diana, for the good of the country." Diana later says,...

Breeders is a dark comedy. But towards the end of the second season of the Martin Freeman- and Daisy Haggard-fronted parenting series, it gets even darker.
Season 2 of the FX and Sky series starts with their children, Luke (now played by Alex Eastwood) and Ava (Eve Prenelle), six years older than they were in Season 1, thus serving up brand-new parenting challenges for Freeman’s Paul and Haggard’s Ally.
Luke’s increasing anxiety and Ava’s growing independence added some new and uncharted complications into the existing chaotic mix of stretched resources, lack of time and the fine art of winging it while looking like you know what you’re doing.
Paul’s parents, Jackie and Jim (Joanna Bacon and Alun Armstrong), are older too, as is Ally’s mother Leah (Stella Gonet), leading Paul and Ally to find that they now have to parent the generation above...

Breeders episodes 1 and 2: No Sleep and No Places
There are two types of parental confession: those slyly designed to draw attention to an otherwise spotless family lifestyle, and the real ones (‘I would happily boot my baby off Tower Bridge for an hour’s sleep’).
The real ones aren’t a cause for concern because very few if any babies actually get booted off Tower Bridge. It’s just parents letting off steam, because parenting, like nothing else, fills you with steam.

The War of the Worlds star Rafe Spall and His Dark Materials actress Anne-Marie Duff have been cast in BBC Two’s dramatization of the Novichok poisonings in the historic British city of Salisbury in March 2018.
Also joining the cast of Dancing Ledge Productions’ Salisbury are Game Of Thrones actor Mark Addy and Ripper Street‘s MyAnna Buring, as well as Annabel Scholey and Johnny Harris.
Filming has begun on the three-part miniseries, which is written by McMafia writers Adam Patterson and Declan Lawn. It will tell the story of how ordinary people reacted to the crisis as their city became the focus of an unprecedented national emergency when Sergei and Yulia Skripal were poisoned by Russian operatives.
Salisbury is executive produced by Les Miserables producer Chris Carey and Dancing Ledge CEO Laurence Bowen along with Patterson and Lawn and the BBC’s Lucy Richer.
