As we reported a little earlier, the review embargo for Creature Commandos has lifted and critics have nothing but good things to say about DC Studios' first Dcu project (which arrives on Max later this week with its first two episodes).
The Max TV series has received widespread acclaim, resulting in a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. While that score could change in the coming days as more verdicts are counted, this strong start means Creature Commandos has broken a huge DC record.
With 100%, it's the best-reviewed DC Comics adaptation ever, topping the likes of The Penguin (95%), The Dark Knight (94%), Superman: The Movie (93%), Peacemaker (93%), and The Suicide Squad (90%). DC Studios' documentary, Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, has 98%.
While Creature Commandos isn't quite as high-profile as next year's Superman reboot, this is precisely what DC Studios and James Gunn needed. Not only should it dispel some of the scepticism surrounding this...

James Gunn’s DC universe is still in the very early stages of its formative journey. His vision for the Dcu macrocosm involving gods and monsters has yet to come to fruition. But that is not to say that Gunn is lacking in his efforts to fulfill the duties that David Zaslav entrusted him with since November ’22.

After a tumultuous decade-long journey at Marvel from 2014 to 2023, James Gunn took charge of the newly-formed DC Studios, supervising all sections under its authority across the board – starting from publishing comics to producing games. But while those might not belong to his specific skillset, crafting a brand new live-action world of DC falls directly under his purview.

The first reviews for Creature Commandos have hit today and, well, DC Studios and James Gunn have delivered what sounds like a pitch-perfect opening chapter for the new Dcu.
Fans have been understandably sceptical about the filmmaker's plans, no great shock after what's proven to be an up-and-down decade or more for the DC Universe courtesy of Warner Bros.' Dceu. Now, though, it appears the franchise is back on the right track and in the best hands possible with James Gunn and Peter Safran.
Critics are full of praise for Creature Commandos after seeing the entire seven-episode season, and we should have a Rotten Tomatoes score to share with you very soon.
For now, GamesRadar+'s glowing verdict reveals, "James Gunn's surprisingly heartwarming R-rated animated series is the explosive fresh start that DC so desperately needed, and more than proves that the Dcu is in good hands."

Superman & Lois is coming to an end tonight, but many might be wondering why the hit CW TV show is ending now.
Well, we actually were given a concrete reason why the Tyler Hoechlin-led series is no longer continuing on.
Keep reading to find out more…
Warner Bros. actually made the call.
“They don’t want a competing Superman product in the marketplace,” The CW’s president of entertainment Brad Schwartz told The Wrap several months ago. “They” refers to the studio Warner Bros. and the “competing product” refers to James Gunn‘s upcoming Superman movie starring David Corenswet. It looks like the studio did not want multiple Superman stories out there at once.
See some photos from the Superman movie set if you haven’t already seen! Warner Bros. will release the movie on July 11, 2025.
Superman & Lois airs its series finale tonight (December 2) at 8pm Et on The CW.

Who knew that John Cena’s appearance in the comedic role of Peacemaker in James Gunn’s Suicide Squad would create the Dcu as we know it? Well, surely no one except Mr. Gunn.

Superman may be the most anticipated and talked about upcoming entry in the newly titled DC Universe (or Dcu), but Creature Commandos will be the first official entry under the leadership of James Gunn. The seven episode animated series is set to air its first two episodes on December 5, with the remaining five episodes releasing once a week following that. I had the chance to see all seven episodes early, and this review pertains to the series in its entirety.

Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) assembles another ragtag team of unwitting and unwilling soldiers to act as her own personal army. With new regulations in place forbidding the use of humans in such practices, Waller relies on a team of monsters to act as a loophole. Plot: Set two years after the events of The Suicide Squad, Creature Commandos focuses on a secret team of incarcerated monsters recruited for missions deemed too dangerous for humans. With Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) as their puppetmaster, a ragtag group of monsters led by Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo) travel to a foreign kingdom to protect Princess Ilana (Maria Bakalova) before learning there’s more at stake than the lives of her subjects.

The Dcu kicking off with an animated series in the same vein as The Suicide Squad is an unusual way to launch a new shared universe. However, James Gunn has always walked his own path, leaving us with beloved hits like the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise and Peacemaker. Creature Commandos proves to be a spiritual and literal successor to the filmmaker’s Dceu work, and a thrilling taste of what’s to come from DC Studios moving forward. The result is an action-packed, hilarious, and surprisingly moving romp which effectively establishes the Dcu’s tone and leaves us positively obsessed with the monstrous members of Task Force M.
Visually, Creature Commandos looks great and is arguably at its best delivering bloody, maniacal fight scenes. However, the character moments also benefit from the expressive nature of how the leads are brought to life, something that’s vital when a fair...

2024 has been a weird year for movies and Hollywood. From average box office numbers (except some) to disappointing failures, Hollywood movies haven’t been able to hit that hard in theaters around the world.

It is an exciting time for fans of DC comics for James Gunn’s Dcu has been coming along nicely, with the first film, Superman, expected to release next year. Full of several new characters and new faces in familiar roles, it stars Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Superman/Clark Kent’s one true love.

While it is exciting to have new actors redefine familiar characters and add to the legacy, there is one thing that even Gunn’s Dcu can’t do that Bitsie Tulloch did in Superman & Lois.

The Brave And The Bold: Could Wicked Star Jonathan Bailey Be In Contention To Play The Dcu's Batman?
Batman remains DC's flagship character, but James Gunn's DC Studios has understandably decided to focus on restoring Superman to his former glory before rebooting the Dark Knight.
It likely helps that the vigilante already has a big screen franchise, with Matt Reeves' The Batman Part II currently in development with Robert Pattinson set to reprise his role as Bruce Wayne. The question remains, though: who will be the Dcu's Caped Crusader?
Many fans are convinced today that Wicked star Jonathan Bailey could be a contender based on a recent social media like by Gunn.
The Bridgerton actor is 36 and 5'11", so by no means a bad fit for Batman. If Bailey were cast in the role, then he'd also be the first openly gay actor to play this character in live-action. The British actor will also star in next year's Jurassic World Rebirth.
Honestly, though, we wouldn't put too...

December is finally here but will we get a Superman teaser trailer before Christmas? That's the prevailing theory right now and, even after all those set photos, our first look at the Man of Tomorrow in action promises to "break the internet."
In the meantime, DC Studios co-ceo and Superman writer/director James Gunn has responded to more questions from fans, making it clear that Lex Luthor is the reboot's lead villain...and that rumours about The Authority targeting the hero are still incorrect.
Gunn also teased the Superman trailer's release and shed some light on how DC Studios would approach recasting key Dcu roles.

James Gunn is busy rebooting the Dceu and creating a new cinematic universe based on DC comics. The most important project in the first chapter is Superman, which is set to release in 2025.
We know that the movie will completely reboot Superman and his supporting characters. Gunn has cast new faces for the franchise, including David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, and Nicholas Hoult, to build Superman’s world.
This means General Zod, one of Superman’s most famous enemies, will also be recast. Michael Shannon previously played Zod in the Dceu, portraying the Kryptonian military leader who wanted to rebuild Krypton on Earth, no matter the cost. Shannon’s powerful performance made Zod a memorable villain, even though Man of Steel left some fans dissatisfied with Superman’s portrayal.

James Gunn has revamped the former Dceu into the Dcu, with its official launch set for next week. While we haven’t seen much of the Dcu yet, there are many exciting projects on the horizon, including the highly anticipated Lanterns series.
Chris Mundy (True Detective: Night Country) will serve as showrunner and executive producer, working alongside Damon Lindelof (Watchmen) and comic book writer Tom King on the series.
This article will focus on Tom King, delving into his personal life and sharing insights from two intriguing interviews about the upcoming Lanterns project.
Tom King, born on July 15, 1978, is a renowned American comic book author best known for his work on The Vision (Marvel Comics), The Sheriff of Babylon (DC’s Vertigo imprint), Batman, Mister Miracle, and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (DC Comics). He is also the author of the novel A Once Crowded Sky and an Eisner Award winner.

Creature Commandos is very nearly upon us and the animated Max series promises to give comic book fans their first taste of DC Studios' new Dcu.
We'll be sharing our review of the series tomorrow, but in the meantime, the first clip from the show has been released. In that, Rick Flag Sr. takes the members of Task Force M on their first mission, with the dysfunction between them on full display.
G.I. Robot just wants to kill Nazis, while everyone else...well, they don't want to be there. As for Weasel, he's not enjoying his helicopter ride and that leads to Flag referencing the events of The Suicide Squad and the monster's previous visit to Corto Maltese alongside Task Force X (which saw him nearly drown).
Creature Commandos showrunner Dean Lorey was recently asked how this series differs from his previous DC work.

Former CIA Agent-turned-Comic Book Writer Tom King Discusses the Dcu: “Feels like a DC renaissance.”
We know that James Gunn has taken over the former Dceu and turned it into the Dcu, whose proper premiere is coming next year. But, while we haven’t seen much of the Dcu, we know that a lot of projects are on the way and one of the highly anticipated upcoming projects is the Lanterns series.
Chris Mundy (True Detective: Night Country) will be serving as showrunner and executive producer and will also write Lanterns alongside Damon Lindelof (Watchmen) and comic book author Tom King (Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow), also known for his run on the Batman comic book series some time ago.

Deadman is a character that is long overdue a live-action adaptation. We have been talking about him again recently as there have been rumors of an animated show possibly set in DC Studios' upcoming DC Universe. If that were to be the case, co-chairmen and CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran have revealed before that characters in animated projects could indeed reprise the role in live-action Dcu projects.
With that in mind if the animated show does go ahead and Deadman finds his way to the Dcu in live-action form, who could play the role? Well, this writer believes that there's one name in the acting world that'd be a perfect fit to play Deadman, and that person's name is Doug Jones!

This week marks the debut of Creature Commandos, a series that currently seems like a quasi-sequel to The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker. It has been revealed some elements from both projects will carry over, but not everything will make the transition. This could lead to confusion in Joe Audience (read: the general audience member), who doesn't know how all the pieces will fit together. To counter this confusion, Gunn could repeat what he did with Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicice Squad: introducing their respective worlds through the context of it's protagonists' stories.
Within the next year, three James Gunn-created projects will see the light of day. The first official project within the Dcu will be the animated Creature Commandos show. As such, it has the task to establish the new universe. It will then followed by Superman, arguably the more important project, as it is a movie...

On December 31, 2020, film/TV critic David Opie tweeted, "No one is 'born bi,' you watch 'Scooby-Doo' at a formative age and the whole cast turns you bi." The post, featuring photos of the cast of the 2002 "Scooby-Doo" movie, received 19,000 retweets and 135,000 likes, which might seem strange considering that there's nothing about the movie that has anything to do with bisexuality. At least, not on paper.
The vibes, however, are indeed pretty queer. The movie stars Sarah Michelle Gellar as Daphne, Linda Cardellini as Velma, and Freddie Prinze Jr. as Fred, all of whom are beloved within the queer community for one reason or another. More importantly, "Scooby Doo" as a franchise has always had a strong queer fanbase. Part of that's due to how the cartoon's aesthetics borrowed heavily from the countercultural movement of the '60s and '70s, and partly it's because of how precious a character Velma is.

A production assistant on the second season of “Arcane” has slammed an A.I. version of the show’s trailer in a post on X. @Lordupe shared the video and wrote that the cartoon “doesn’t add anything concrete or artistic.”
“I’m profoundly opposed to this kind of approach. Our artists have worked hard for years to produce the most beautiful shots possible, to me it’s a huge lack of respect,” he wrote. “The framing is identical and the ‘realistic’ aspect doesn’t add anything concrete or artistic.”

The Dcu is on the way! The first entry in the new universe is already distinguishing itself from its Marvel counterpart by making it an animated one. Marvel is no stranger to animation now, but it certainly didn’t start that way. Creature Commandos, a lesser known group, streams on Max on December 5, just a few days away.
One could say that Creature Commandos falls under the category of niche comic book characters and groups. Not many people know that both Frankenstein and the Bride of Frankenstein are characters within the world of DC. If you asked a random person on the street who Doctor Phosphorus is, there’s a very slim chance they’d be able to tell you. However, the same used to be said of Rocket Raccoon, Groot, and Yondu. Now, after James Gunn and Marvel made them a cinematic success, almost everyone in the US and...

The world of comics and Cbm adaptations has always been filled with layered and complex morality. Be it Kevin Feige’s MCU, James Gunn’s Dcu, or Eric Kripke’s The Boys saga, the heroes and villains in every universe have been tempted by and flirted with shades of grey, often crossing over completely into morally questionable territories to find what they need.

We didn't get many Peacemaker season 2 set photos when cameras were still rolling on the HBO series and fans who did manage to take them soon found themselves hit with takedown notices on social media.
Production on the show recently wrapped, of course, meaning we're now waiting for DC Studios co-ceo and series creator James Gunn to share an official first look at The Suicide Squad character's Dcu debut.
In the meantime, a new photo has just shown up online with John Cena's Christopher Smith and Jennifer Holland's Emilia Harcourt riding a Tokusatsu-inspired motorcycle. Like the rest of the Dcu, it seems Peacemaker will embrace the wackier side of the DC Universe (though we'd say it's fitting for someone like Peacemaker to have a ride this obnoxious).
Also of note is the fact we see the A.R.G.U.S. logo on the bike, suggesting they're funding whatever he's up to here!

Matt Reeves’ epic Batman saga continues to grow. After the success of The Batman, the universe expanded with The Penguin spinoff show, which has received high praise from critics and fans. The spinoff has set up Penguin as a major villain for the franchise’s future.
Recently, Matt Reeves hinted at the next villain for The Batman: Part II, and many fans believe he could be referring to the Court of Owls. However, this doesn’t rule out other popular villains like Mr. Freeze, especially since the winter setting of the film could hint at his appearance.
Meanwhile, James Gunn recently shared that Reeves hasn’t delivered the script yet for the movie, which has already faced delays. This means the villain and other details could still change.
In an interview with The Movie Dweeb, Jeffrey Wright, who plays Jim Gordon, shared a surprising idea for the next Batman villain.

Suicide Squad was released in 2016 and received mixed reviews from critics and audiences. Some people liked the characters and action, but many felt the plot was weak and the movie was disjointed.
The film was criticized for its uneven tone, pacing, and poorly timed jokes. Despite being one of the lowest-rated Dceu movies, it was still a box-office hit, and some fans have called for the release of Ayer’s original cut. Many believe the negative reaction was due to issues during post-production, but the full story is more complex.
David Ayer recently explained on X that his original, darker cut of Suicide Squad was never test-screened before last-minute changes were made, resulting in “madness.”
Nope. Not true at all. I made a drama. Studio wanted a comedy. Madness ensued. My cut was never tested or screened for an audience.

Suicide Squad was released in August 2016, just a few months after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice had arrived in theaters. Zack Snyder's movie had a huge opening weekend (despite negative reviews), but a shocking second-weekend drop sent Warner Bros. into panic mode.
As a result, Suicide Squad received a drastic overhaul with the addition of colourful graphics, catchy pop songs, and a "happy ending" in place of the original, much darker, abusive dynamic between The Joker and Harley Quinn.
While the #ReleaseTheAyerCut movement has never been quite as popular as #ReleaseTheSnyderCut - which ultimately led to Zack Snyder's Justice League dropping on HBO Max - a great many fans are desperate to see David Ayer's original version of Suicide Squad.

DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn has repeatedly confirmed that he's still waiting on Matt Reeves' script for The Batman Part II. As far as we know, the movie remains on track for its planned 2026 release but who will be the sequel's big bad?

Henry Cavill’s Surprising Exit From The Witcher Series ( Photo Credit – YouTube )
Henry Cavill’s exit from Netflix’s The Witcher sent shockwaves through fans who had championed his portrayal of Geralt of Rivia. The final episodes of Season 3, released last July, served as his swan song. While the season delivered its share of epic battles, it struggled to fully redeem itself—much like the decision to split it into two parts. Cavill’s departure left fans asking one big question: why did he leave The Witcher at its peak?
Here’s the tea: Netflix confirmed Cavill’s exit in October 2022, dropping the bombshell that Liam Hemsworth would take up Geralt’s iconic swords in Season 4. Cavill, who passionately campaigned for the role long before the series even had a script, announced his departure just as he teased a return to his Superman cape. But Hollywood’s gears had other plans.

With DC Studios setting out to create a single shared Dcu (with a handful of "Elseworlds" projects like The Batman franchise), it's unclear what that means for Warner Bros. Animation's direct-to-dvd DC offerings.
2024 has seen the release of Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths and Watchmen, though July's San Diego Comic-Con didn't bring the usual annual announcements about what's next. As a result, most fans expect these movies to be quietly scrapped.
Now, though, it appears there either are - or were - plans for an animated trilogy based on Batman: Knightfall.

It's no secret that, after Creature Commandos, Frank Grillo's Rick Flag Sr. will appear in Superman and Peacemaker season 2.
Set photos have confirmed that he and A.R.G.U.S. are somehow tied to a character we believe is Ultraman, while we'd bet on him taking aim at Christopher Smith to avenge the death of his son, Rick Flag Jr., in The Suicide Squad.
Talking to GamesRadar+, Grillo confirmed that Flag Sr. will "take over for [Amanda Waller]" as the leader of A.R.G.U.S.
"In Creature Commandos, I got the uniform," he told the site. "I got the yellow shirt and the hair, and, you know, he's really part of that world. And then in Superman and even more so in Peacemaker, I take over for Viola Davis in what she was the leader of A.R.G.U.S."
"So now I become almost an administrator," Grillo continued.

Now that we’ve made it through Thanksgiving, we are welcoming the colder winter months and all the exciting TV shows that come with it.
And though there’s plenty of holiday offerings to enjoy in December. Streamers, networks and streamers have plenty of other big new and returning shows to keep us busy before the arrival of spring. Genre TV will deliver in spades with the premieres of “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” on Disney+ and “Creature Commandos” on Max. “Squid Game,” the most-watched Netflix show ever, finally returns for its anticipated second season right after Christmas; and “The Rookie” Season 7 headlines a packed broadcast schedule kicking off in January, while “The White Lotus” makes its long-awaited return. Then new series like “Doc” on Fox, “On Call” on Prime Video and Max’s “The Pitt” are a few of the new shows vying for our attention.

James Gunn and Peter Safran's brand-new DC Universe (Dcu) is set to kick off soon with "Creature Commandos," which will premiere December 5, 2024, on Max. And how does this project aim to set the tone for DC's freshly rebooted super-powered adventures to come? Well, by returning to what's proven to be a winning formula for Gunn in the past: a story about a band of misfits who, despite their differences, learn to peel back the layers of their identities while evolving as a united front. Yes, this seven-episode animated series revolves around the titular group of oddball super-powered individuals from the world of DC Comics and takes place right after the events of the first season of "Peacemaker." I know what you're thinking: "Creature Commandos" sounds an awful lot like a sequel to Gunn's "The Suicide Squad," and in some ways it is, especially when we scrutinize the narrative and thematic links between the two.

Spoiler Alert !!!Spoilers ahead for Superman & Lois
Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman & Lois is all set to end next week as the CW series gears up for its finale. For four seasons, the show has delivered some of the most accurate depictions of Superman, and the last few episodes have leaned into it more. The penultimate episode of the show sets up a harrowing finale that has the capacity to go towards tragedy.
With James Gunn’s Superman just a few months away, the Dcu will have an all-new Superman. David Corenswet is set to take on the mantle and while he has nothing to do with Superman & Lois’ version, Gunn might not want to have different Kal-Els on TV and on the big screen.

Was Margot Robbie almost left out of Suicide Squad? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
When James Gunn put together The Suicide Squad, Warner Bros. didn’t plead for Robbie’s return. The studio raised their hands and said, “We love Margot, but do your thing; we’re cool.” Gunn spilled the tea to SlashFilm, revealing, “They said, ‘Listen, we love Margot, we would love it if she were back in the movie, but as long as you’re doing what you want to do … we don’t care.’” No big deal, huh? For a minute there, The Suicide Squad could’ve been Harley-free.
But how is that even possible? Gunn had complete creative freedom. And if he didn’t want to bring back Quinn for his version of the squad, he didn’t have to. But, being the genius that he is, Gunn kept what worked. Why mess with perfection, right? So,...

The Nova Corps first appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) as Xandar’s peacekeepers, protecting the galaxy and the Orb, which turned out to be the Power Stone. Later, in Avengers: Infinity War (2018), it’s revealed that Thanos destroyed Xandar off-screen to take the stone.
Even though the Nova Corps were shown multiple times, their most famous member, Nova, was left out and doesn’t seem to exist in the MCU yet. James Gunn recently explained on Threads that he didn’t include Nova in the Guardians movies because he wanted only one human character in the story.

This isn’t the first time James Gunn has applied this reasoning. He previously explained that he changed Drax’s origin for a similar reason—he didn’t want too many humans in a space-centered story.
