As we reported a little earlier, the review embargo for Creature Commandos has lifted and critics have nothing but good things to say about DC Studios' first Dcu project (which arrives on Max later this week with its first two episodes).

The Max TV series has received widespread acclaim, resulting in a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. While that score could change in the coming days as more verdicts are counted, this strong start means Creature Commandos has broken a huge DC record.

With 100%, it's the best-reviewed DC Comics adaptation ever, topping the likes of The Penguin (95%), The Dark Knight (94%), Superman: The Movie (93%), Peacemaker (93%), and The Suicide Squad (90%). DC Studios' documentary, Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, has 98%.

While Creature Commandos isn't quite as high-profile as next year's Superman reboot, this is precisely what DC Studios and James Gunn needed. Not only should it dispel some of the scepticism surrounding this...

The first reviews for Creature Commandos have hit today and, well, DC Studios and James Gunn have delivered what sounds like a pitch-perfect opening chapter for the new Dcu.

Fans have been understandably sceptical about the filmmaker's plans, no great shock after what's proven to be an up-and-down decade or more for the DC Universe courtesy of Warner Bros.' Dceu. Now, though, it appears the franchise is back on the right track and in the best hands possible with James Gunn and Peter Safran.

Critics are full of praise for Creature Commandos after seeing the entire seven-episode season, and we should have a Rotten Tomatoes score to share with you very soon.

For now, GamesRadar+'s glowing verdict reveals, "James Gunn's surprisingly heartwarming R-rated animated series is the explosive fresh start that DC so desperately needed, and more than proves that the Dcu is in good hands."

Warner Bros. actually made the call.

“They don’t want a competing Superman product in the marketplace,” The CW’s president of entertainment Brad Schwartz told The Wrap several months ago. “They” refers to the studio Warner Bros. and the “competing product” refers to James Gunn‘s upcoming Superman movie starring David Corenswet. It looks like the studio did not want multiple Superman stories out there at once.

Superman may be the most anticipated and talked about upcoming entry in the newly titled DC Universe (or Dcu), but Creature Commandos will be the first official entry under the leadership of James Gunn. The seven episode animated series is set to air its first two episodes on December 5, with the remaining five episodes releasing once a week following that. I had the chance to see all seven episodes early, and this review pertains to the series in its entirety.

The Plot

It is an exciting time for fans of DC comics for James Gunn’s Dcu has been coming along nicely, with the first film, Superman, expected to release next year. Full of several new characters and new faces in familiar roles, it stars Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Superman/Clark Kent’s one true love.

While it is exciting to have new actors redefine familiar characters and add to the legacy, there is one thing that even Gunn’s Dcu can’t do that Bitsie Tulloch did in Superman & Lois.

Lois Lane is a character often found in the many versions of Superman mythos, and in fact, without Lane, the Kryptonian superhero’s story might remain unfinished in a lot of iterations.

Batman remains DC's flagship character, but James Gunn's DC Studios has understandably decided to focus on restoring Superman to his former glory before rebooting the Dark Knight.

It likely helps that the vigilante already has a big screen franchise, with Matt Reeves' The Batman Part II currently in development with Robert Pattinson set to reprise his role as Bruce Wayne. The question remains, though: who will be the Dcu's Caped Crusader?

Many fans are convinced today that Wicked star Jonathan Bailey could be a contender based on a recent social media like by Gunn. 

The Bridgerton actor is 36 and 5'11", so by no means a bad fit for Batman. If Bailey were cast in the role, then he'd also be the first openly gay actor to play this character in live-action. The British actor will also star in next year's Jurassic World Rebirth.

Honestly, though, we wouldn't put too...

December is finally here but will we get a Superman teaser trailer before Christmas? That's the prevailing theory right now and, even after all those set photos, our first look at the Man of Tomorrow in action promises to "break the internet."

Superman's Krypto is also expected to play a major role in the story.

Today, we've learned of another exciting addition to the movie, this time behind the camera. DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn has confirmed that Rob Hardy has boarded Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow as the movie's director of photography/cinematographer.

His film credits include Ex Machina, Annihilation, Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Men, The Man from Toronto, and Civil War. He's also attached to the upcoming Blade Runner 2099 TV series and, in case it wasn't clear from the projects listed above, regularly collaborates with filmmaker Alex Garland.

Chris Mundy (True Detective: Night Country) will serve as showrunner and executive producer, working alongside Damon Lindelof (Watchmen) and comic book writer Tom King on the series.

Deadman is a character that is long overdue a live-action adaptation. This week marks the debut of Creature Commandos, a series that currently seems like a quasi-sequel to The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker. It has been revealed some elements from both projects will carry over, but not everything will make the transition. This could lead to confusion in Joe Audience (read: the general audience member), who doesn't know how all the pieces will fit together. To counter this confusion, Gunn could repeat what he did with Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicice Squad: introducing their respective worlds through the context of it's protagonists' stories.

Within the next year, three James Gunn-created projects will see the light of day. The first official project within the Dcu will be the animated Creature Commandos show. As such, it has the task to establish the new universe. It will then followed by Superman, arguably the more important project, as it is a movie...

On December 31, 2020, film/TV critic David Opie tweeted, "No one is 'born bi,' you watch 'Scooby-Doo' at a formative age and the whole cast turns you bi." The post, featuring photos of the cast of the 2002 "Scooby-Doo" movie, received 19,000 retweets and 135,000 likes, which might seem strange considering that there's nothing about the movie that has anything to do with bisexuality. At least, not on paper.

The vibes, however, are indeed pretty queer. The movie stars Sarah Michelle Gellar as Daphne, Linda Cardellini as Velma, and Freddie Prinze Jr. as Fred, all of whom are beloved within the queer community for one reason or another. More importantly, "Scooby Doo" as a franchise has always had a strong queer fanbase. Part of that's due to how the cartoon's aesthetics borrowed heavily from the countercultural movement of the '60s and '70s, and partly it's because of how precious a character Velma is.

A production assistant on the second season of “Arcane” has slammed an A.I. version of the show’s trailer in a post on X. @Lordupe shared the video and wrote that the cartoon “doesn’t add anything concrete or artistic.”

“I’m profoundly opposed to this kind of approach. Our artists have worked hard for years to produce the most beautiful shots possible, to me it’s a huge lack of respect,” he wrote. “The framing is identical and the ‘realistic’ aspect doesn’t add anything concrete or artistic.”

We didn't get many Peacemaker season 2 set photos when cameras were still rolling on the HBO series and fans who did manage to take them soon found themselves hit with takedown notices on social media. 

Production on the show recently wrapped, of course, meaning we're now waiting for DC Studios co-ceo and series creator James Gunn to share an official first look at The Suicide Squad character's Dcu debut. 

In the meantime, a new photo has just shown up online with John Cena's Christopher Smith and Jennifer Holland's Emilia Harcourt riding a Tokusatsu-inspired motorcycle. Like the rest of the Dcu, it seems Peacemaker will embrace the wackier side of the DC Universe (though we'd say it's fitting for someone like Peacemaker to have a ride this obnoxious). 

Also of note is the fact we see the A.R.G.U.S. logo on the bike, suggesting they're funding whatever he's up to here!

The excitement surrounding James Gunn‘s revamped DC Universe has sparked plenty of rumors, especially about Superman, the upcoming film starring David Corenswet. As production geared up in Atlanta, reports had surfaced claiming that the movie’s budget could surpass a staggering $364 million.

2024 has seen the release of Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths and Watchmen, though July's San Diego Comic-Con didn't bring the usual annual announcements about what's next. As a result, most fans expect these movies to be quietly scrapped. 

Now, though, it appears there either are - or were - plans for an animated trilogy based on Batman: Knightfall. 

Based on recent filings on the Entertainment Identifier Registry (Eidr) system, which "provides a unique identifier for audiovisual content across the global entertainment industry," DC Animated Universe veteran Jeff Wamester (who helmed the Crisis on Infinite Earths trilogy) will helm this adaptation of the iconic storyline.

It's no secret that, after Creature Commandos, Frank Grillo's Rick Flag Sr. will appear in Superman and Peacemaker season 2.

Set photos have confirmed that he and A.R.G.U.S. are somehow tied to a character we believe is Ultraman, while we'd bet on him taking aim at Christopher Smith to avenge the death of his son, Rick Flag Jr., in The Suicide Squad. 

Talking to GamesRadar+, Grillo confirmed that Flag Sr. will "take over for [Amanda Waller]" as the leader of A.R.G.U.S.

"In Creature Commandos, I got the uniform," he told the site. "I got the yellow shirt and the hair, and, you know, he's really part of that world. And then in Superman and even more so in Peacemaker, I take over for Viola Davis in what she was the leader of A.R.G.U.S."

"So now I become almost an administrator," Grillo continued.

Now that we’ve made it through Thanksgiving, we are welcoming the colder winter months and all the exciting TV shows that come with it.

And though there’s plenty of holiday offerings to enjoy in December. Streamers, networks and streamers have plenty of other big new and returning shows to keep us busy before the arrival of spring. Genre TV will deliver in spades with the premieres of “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” on Disney+ and “Creature Commandos” on Max. “Squid Game,” the most-watched Netflix show ever, finally returns for its anticipated second season right after Christmas; and “The Rookie” Season 7 headlines a packed broadcast schedule kicking off in January, while “The White Lotus” makes its long-awaited return. Then new series like “Doc” on Fox, “On Call” on Prime Video and Max’s “The Pitt” are a few of the new shows vying for our attention.

The studio raised their hands and said, “We love Margot, but do your thing; we’re cool.” Gunn spilled the tea to SlashFilm, revealing, “They said, ‘Listen, we love Margot, we would love it if she were back in the movie, but as long as you’re doing what you want to do … we don’t care.’” No big deal, huh? For a minute there, The Suicide Squad could’ve been Harley-free.

But how is that even possible? Gunn had complete creative freedom. And if he didn’t want to bring back Quinn for his version of the squad, he didn’t have to. But, being the genius that he is, Gunn kept what worked. Why mess with perfection, right? So,...
