Film audiences may have first recognized Ben Affleck for his appearance in the 1992 film "School Ties," where he played the main sidekick of the film's central bully. In 1993, Affleck was already behind the camera as well, having made a rather notorious 16-minute short film called "I Killed My Lesbian Wife, Hung Her on a Meat Hook, and Now I Have a Three-Picture Deal at Disney." Affleck played a boorish womanizer named Shannon in Kevin Smith's 1995 comedy "Mallrats," and he teamed with Smith again in 1997 to make the stirring queer romantic drama "Chasing Amy." At the end of 1997, Affleck and his friend Matt Damon became awards darlings thanks to Gun Van Sant's "Good Will Hunting" which they both wrote and starred in.
Affleck has remained a superstar ever since, having appeared in terse studio dramas, mainstream romances, and numerous action films. He played the superheroes Daredevil and Batman and continued to work with Kevin Smith.

"The hum is not your enemy!" Or is it? BBC has revealed the trailer for a mystery thriller series called The Listeners, which will be streaking in the UK later this month. No US date is set yet - hopefully soon. Not to be confused with the mystery thriller movie called The Watchers from this summer or Steve Buscemi's film The Listener. The Listeners tells the story of Claire, a teacher, who begins to hear a low humming sound and finds support from others who can hear it. What is this sound? Where is it coming from? Even doctors have no idea. BBC describes it as "enigmatic, provocative, and haunting" and says it will explore "the seduction of the wild & unknowable, the human search for the transcendent, the rise of conspiracy culture in the West, and the desire for community & connection in our increasingly polarised times." Starring Rebecca Hall as Claire,...

It’s no secret that the Covid-19 pandemic upended the movie theater business in 2020, but in the years since, the industry has slowly climbed back. In 2021, 14 movies were able to cross the coveted $100 million mark at the U.S. box office. In 2022, that number jumped up to 18 films. And in 2023, there were a whopping 25 such blockbusters. So how many features released during the current 2024 calendar year will end up becoming box office behemoths? Stay tuned.
To date, the biggest money-makers of the year are a trio of highly anticipated sequels: “Inside Out 2,” “Deadpool & Wolverine” and “Despicable Me 4.” Scroll through our gallery above (or click here for direct access) to see all of the 2024 box office hits so far that made more than $100 million in the United States. The number will continue to grow as high-profile movies like “Wicked” and “Mufasa: The Lion King” will be released later in the year.

Of all seasons of "True Detective," season 2 remains the most maligned. But I always appreciate an attempt to peer under the carapace of sunny California and see what wretched beasts spring forth, and I think season 2 of Nic Pizzolatto's crime thriller series did as good a job as any of probing the dark side of the City of Angels. The same could be said of the first season, I suppose, though the swampy environs of deep Louisiana seem to lend themselves more to a murky noir mystery than SoCal. Regardless, it was when trying to find other shows with a similar tone to the first and second season of "True Detective" that I came across the "Red Riding" trilogy.

With its body horror “The Substance” performing well at the box office, a rerelease of Tarsem Singh’s “The Fall” currently underway, and a successful streaming channel offering artful cinema from around the world, you’d think the fine folks at Mubi might slow down and smell the roses, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Returning for its seventh season, Mubi is announcing a new installment of its award-winning audio-documentary series, “Mubi Podcast.” This new batch of episodes is inspired by film critic Tim Robey’s soon-to-be-published book, “Box Office Poison: Hollywood’s Story in a Century of Flops.”
Highlighting films such as “Sylvia Scarlett” (1935), “Sorcerer” (1977), and “Speed Racer” (2008), Robey’s book uncovers the history behind some of the entertainment industry’s biggest flops, contrasting their initial failure with the eventual acclaim they’d garner over time. Despite losing far too much in his notorious divorce and defamation lawsuit against ex-wife Amber Heard, Johnny Depp seems to be finally doing great in life. Although he missed out on several iconic film franchises that he was once synonymous with, Depp appears to be making peace with it, through his art. Dipping the paintbrush and creating masterpieces, Depp recently made headlines for his immersive and experiential exhibition in Manhattan.

Christopher Nolan redefined the superhero genre with The Dark Knight Trilogy. His gritty take on the genre not only revived the Batman franchise after it was put on ice by the ridiculous Batman & Robin (1977) but also set a high bar for all the upcoming superhero projects. It significantly contributed to Batman’s popularity among a large section of moviegoers.

We live in an era where most of the legendary directors like Martin Scorsese and Ridley Scott are not great fans of the superhero genre. However, The Dark Knight Trilogy is very different for its mature tonality and realistic milieu. While talking about the films in 2018, Christopher Nolan admitted that primarily, the relatability factor in Batman pulled him to work in the genre.

Marvel once recruited actor Rebecca Hall for Robert Downey Jr.’s last Iron Man solo film. Since Iron Man 3 was very much unlike Hall’s usual work, doing the feature required a bit of a learning curve. Especially when it came to working with her co-star Downey.

Iron Man 3 stood out from Hall’s usual work. The Night House star might’ve been known for more dramatic, grounded features that were smaller in scale. Up until doing the Marvel blockbuster, Hall’s most popular films might’ve been Christopher Nolan’s The Prestige and Ben Affleck’s The Town. In a 2013 interview with The Los Angeles Times (via Daily Actor), even Hall herself acknowledged that Iron Man was a huge shift in her filmography.

When discussing the story of “The Listeners,” both the novel by Jordan Tannahill and now the BBC Studios series from Janicza Bravo, the emphasis must be placed on the emotional rather than the literal. Yes, the premise centers on a woman who begins hearing a humming sound that nobody else can, but it’s also about the way isolation can create the conditions for otherwise ordinary people to become vulnerable to finding answers in dark places. Some completely fall down a rabbit hole of conspiracies, leaving those who loved them wondering what even happened to the person they thought they knew. For all the ways we believe ourselves to be fully rational and incapable of falling prey to this, “The Listeners” calls this into question in unsettling fashion.
These thorny yet critical ideas are expressed through the sharp eye of Bravo who, just as she did in the underrated “Lemon” and the brilliant “Zola,...

There won’t be more seasons of Rebecca Hall BBC series “The Listeners,” says director Janicza Bravo. But don’t worry – it’s a good thing.
“I think that miniseries or limited series are a great gift. ‘Make more!’: that’s the American model. But there’s something so sexy about saying it’s just this,” she tells Variety.
Over the course of five episodes, – Claire (Hall) keeps hearing a weird humming noise. It drives her insane, but here’s the problem – no one else, including her family, can hear it.
“That’s exactly why I liked it. I’m intrigued and excited by individuals who exist in a reality that’s not real to everyone else,” says Bravo about the show listed among Variety’s Hot Picks back in May.
“It has definitely happened with girlfriends of mine who have certain medical conditions or feel there are things...

Rebecca Hall stars in The Listeners, a five-episode TV series directed by Janicza Bravo (Poker Face, Zola) for the BBC that premieres at the Toronto International FIlm Festival on Saturday.
In the adaptation of the novel of the same name by Canadian author Jordan Tannahill that was written by the author himself, Hall plays Claire, a popular teacher who begins to hear a low humming sound that no one else around her can hear.
The Hollywood Reporter can exclusively reveal a first clip from the series, produced by Element Pictures (Normal People), which the BBC will air in the U.K. later this year.
In the clip, Claire’s life starts to unravel as she struggles to make sense of the sound.
The show follows Claire as the “seemingly innocuous noise gradually upsets the balance of her life, increasing tension between herself and her husband, Paul, and daughter, Ashley,” according to a show synopsis.

Speaking to Deadline on the eve of TIFF, where it is world premiering, Hall said she developed a trick to help her get into character.
“What was helpful was we were shooting on film,” said the Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire star. “Digital is silent but with film you can hear the sound of the whir. Sooner or later I latched onto that as my hum. It was comfortable and helped me be where I needed to be.”
After a while, Hall said “it became the thing of the character, I knew it was there and it was a sort of companion.

The recent years have not been kind to Ben Affleck and Jeremy Renner. After their fiercely successful respective Hollywood careers spanning 25+ years and each enjoying a spot at the peak, for such tragedy and misery to befall both actors within 2 years of each other is nearly unheard of.
Jeremy Renner and Ben Affleck in The Town [Credit: Warner Bros. Pictures]
For Ben Affleck, his misery pertains more to the romantic/personal aspect of his life, as reports of his second breakup and first divorce from Jennifer Lopez flood the internet exactly 2 years after the celebrity couple got hitched. For Jeremy Renner, his fate is a bit more tragic and much more deserving of the public’s undying sympathies.
And yet, beyond the haze of nightmarish accidents and déjà vu breakups, one thread ties both Oscar-worthy actors together under a single title: The Town.

A few months ago, we got the release of the fifth film in WB/Legendary’s MonsterVerse saga, Godzilla x Kong: The New Era. These films have attempted to somewhat reinvent the traditional Kaiju film for Western audiences, with our mighty monster heroes being called Titans. While the franchise arguably stumbled out of the gate with director Gareth Edwards’ coolly received Godzilla, the saga has steadily grown in popularity, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was a big hit. But how do the films stack up against each other? Let’s take a look with our MonsterVerse Movies Ranked List!
Godzilla (2014)
Audiences were pretty hyped for Gareth Edwards’ 2014 Godzilla reboot, with awesome early trailers that used Ligeti’s Requiem II from 2001: A Space Odyssey, promising the most intense Kaiju movie to date. It didn’t really work out that way, with many complaining about how dull the film was,...

Blake Lively has always made interesting choices as an artist. As /Film's Hannah Shaw-Williams noted while writing about the larger-than-anticipated box office debut for Lively's romantic drama "It Ends with Us," the "Gossip Girl" alum is the rare actor to become "a reliable star of so-called 'chick flicks' i.e. movies overtly marketed towards a female audience" in recent years. This dates back to her breakout role nearly 20 years ago in Ken Kwapis' "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants," a deeply earnest coming-of-age film that also happens to be about a pair of jeans that magically fits four teen girls with decidedly different body types. It's a good movie!
As she settled into adulthood, Lively continued to branch out, collaborating with auteurs like Rebecca Miller and Oliver Stone while primarily focusing on low-to-mid-budget, non-franchise fare at a time when such films were being banished to the direct-to-streaming realm. That's not...

More Godzilla and King Kong are coming to Max. “Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire” will be available to stream from home on Max starting July 4. The film was a box office hit earlier this year with $196 million at the domestic box office and $567 million worldwide.
Following the events of 2021’s “Godzilla vs. Kong,” the new film finds the two iconic monsters putting aside their differences and living peacefully — with King Kong residing in the Hollow Earth alone and Godzilla fighting destructive monsters and napping in Rome’s Colosseum. However, that balance is disrupted when Kong, longing for fellow gigantic friends, discovers a violent clan of massive apes hiding out in Hollow Earth. Led by the ruthless Scar King, the apes attack Earth, and the only creatures who can stop them are Godzilla and Kong.

Adam Wingard returns to the director’s chair to deliver a second helping of the mother of all monster battles, following his superlative work on 2021’s Godzilla Vs Kong. The fifth film in Warner Bros’ MonsterVerse series, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire sees Kong and Godzilla teaming up to take on a new pair of adversaries, but not without punching each other a bit first. There are human characters in Adam Wingard's charmingly silly "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire," and some of them — like Dan Stevens' monster veterinarian Trapper — are a lot of fun. But let's get real: no one watches these movies for the humans. Instead, we watch for monster mayhem. We want to see big bois Godzilla and Kong smash a bunch of sh*t and be burly monsters.
"Godzilla x Kong" may not be the best entry in the so-called MonsterVerse, but gosh is it a lot of fun to watch. And part of that fun comes from the fact that Wingard and his writers Terry Rossio, Simon Barrett, and Jeremy Slater have figured out the right formula for this sort of flick: fewer scenes with humans, more scenes with monsters. As a result of this approach, there are long stretches of "Godzilla x Kong" that focus entirely on Kong...

In Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Mothra made her surprise return and helped the movie's title characters put their differences aside. The iconic Kaiju perished in Godzilla: King of the Monsters courtesy of the evil King Ghidorah, making the apparent retcon confusing for many fans.
A Mothra egg was discovered shortly after her death, though an explanation for how it was transported into Hollow Earth has never been shared. So, was the Mothra we met a resurrected version of the one that died, the Titan that came out of the egg, or the true original?

We recently got confirmation that a follow-up to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is officially in the works, with writer Dave Callaham enlisted to pen the script for the untitled movie.
There was no mention of a potential director at the time, but we'd later learn that Adam Wingard, who helmed The New Empire and previous MonsterVerse movie Godzilla vs. Kong, would no longer direct the project after initially being attached to return. His departure was described as "amicable and stemming from timing issues," with the door remaining "open for a future return."
Now, THR (via SFFGazette.com) the next instalment in the popular franchise has enlisted a new director, with Grant Sputore set to take the helm.
Sputore doesn't have much experience, having come from the world of commercials, but he does have one feature under his belt: The 2019 sci-fi movie I Am Mother starring Hilary Swank.

Despite earning acclaim for his work, Hollywood filmmaker, Woody Allen, has continued to be a controversial figure in the industry. The filmmaker is also known for his nuanced yet problematic portrayal of women in his movies.

While the first Iron Man film remains one of the best films in the 30 billion-dollar franchise, Downey Jr.’s third film had unfavorable opinions, which made it many people’s third favorite trilogy.

According to THR, Wingard is no longer in line to direct the project. Though the report stresses that he didn't have a deal in place, anyway, it sounds like he was tentatively attached prior to a parting of ways, which is described as "amicable and stemming from timing issues," with the door remaining "open for a future return."
