Stress is the silent killer. Irrespective of what might cause it, and it varies with each individual, it continues to pile up undetected until one day the resultant mental burden results in dramatic collapse, outburst, or worse, doing irreparable damage in the process. The second episode of the latest season of Fox’s acclaimed legal drama, Accused, presents such a scenario involving parental stress-related outbursts, which viewers will find scarily relatable. Unlike the first episode, the element of courtroom intrigue is hardly present in “April’s Story,” but the premise itself makes up for that. Actor Taylor Schilling’s performance as the accused person in question oscillates between measured, convincing, and often a bit over the top, which makes for a strange experience. The final resolution once again positions the viewers as the jury, as they may or may not agree to the case’s verdict.

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
This September, we’re celebrating Back to School Night with four midnight movies that aren’t just academically themed but also teach the lessons essential to understanding this school of cinema.
First, read the spoiler-free bait — a weird and wonderful pick from any time in film and why we think it’s worth memorializing. After you’ve watched the movie, come back for the bite — a breakdown of all the spoiler-y moments you’d want to unpack when exiting a theater.
The Bait: This Whole “Midnight Movie” Thing? It’s a Trap
Robert Rodriguez made his name on the candy-colored “Spy Kids” and the graphic novel-inspired “Sin City,” but you can see the director’s fingerprints (thumb-thumb-prints?) all over his earlier teen horror-comedy “The Faculty.”

“I always thought the only alien in this high school was me.”
In 1985, John Hughes set a template for high school archetypes in his classic film The Breakfast Club. The brain, the athlete, the basket case, the princess and the criminal became part of our collective consciousness while expanding ideas of adolescent identity. But 13 years later, these stereotypical roles had begun to feel stifling. While reassuring to know that each identity is valid, the tendency to define your life by an external ideal could keep young adults from overcoming the fear of being themselves. In 1998, Robert Rodriguez applied a sci-fi lens to these classic archetypes in The Faculty, a teen horror film that explores the terror of conformity. A high school faculty taken over by monsters becomes the backdrop for a nuanced dissection of stereotypical expectations and discontent adolescence in a treacherous high school environment built to dehumanize.

School is starting to get back in session for many, hammering in one of the final nails of summer’s coffin. It’s fitting that the new school year heralds in the arrival of Fall; few things are scarier than the hells of school. Students must deal with homework, teachers, parents, social structures, and puberty. Teachers must contend with unruly students, their unrulier parents, grading, and office stresses. And high school is a hell of its own.
Luckily, horror covers the terrors of school from every perspective, young and old alike. This week’s streaming picks head back to school to exploit all the academic anxieties and fears.

It may be difficult to think of a film series that is more aesthetically dated than the "Underworld" movies, and I include certain century-old silent movies in that statement. The first "Underworld" film was released in the fall of 2003, and it was infused with all the genre trappings of its era. The long black leather coats, the blue-tinted photography, the use of slow-motion, and the stoic-yet-capable badass heroes all reek of post-"Matrix" malaise, appealing only to young people who were 16 in September of 2003. What's more, the film's soundtrack featured some terrible metal tunes that old-world metalheads found to be shrill and whiny. Sorry, A Perfect Circle, Puscifer, and The Icarus Line.
The premise of "Underworld" sounds fun on paper, but the bleak, steely tone of the movie made the movie less-than-fun to watch. For centuries, vampires and werewolves — called Lycans — have been at war, killing each other out of sight from the human world.

Two days ago, I mentioned to the loved ones I was spending Christmas with that I knew exactly where I was 25 years earlier. On the evening of December 25, 1998, I was sitting in a movie theatre, taking in an opening day screening of director Robert Rodriguez‘s alien invasion horror film The Faculty (watch it Here). Now, two days after the film’s 25th anniversary, scooper Daniel Richtman has revealed on his Patreon page that Rodriguez is producing a remake of The Faculty!
That’s all of the information that’s available at this time. The Faculty is getting a remake and Robert Rodriguez is on board as producer.
Rodriguez directed the original The Faculty from a screenplay by Scream writer Kevin Williamson (working from a story by David Wechter and Bruce Kimmel). The film has the following synopsis: To the students at Harrington High, the principal and her posse of...

When you think about horror movies from the ’90s, 1998 specifically, a lot of great titles come to mind. There’s I Still Know What You Did Last Summer and John Carpenter’s Vampires. You might even find yourself talking for hours about the forever quotable Bride of Chucky, but one film (to me) stood out above the rest. The Faculty was a movie that came along at the right time, with the right stars aligning. It was directed by Robert Rodriguez from a script by Kevin Williamson (and a story by David Wechter and Bruce Kimmel), fresh off his success with the first Scream film just two years earlier.
The first thing that jumped off the screen was the choice of music. The film sported an amazing soundtrack comprising mostly of covers, highlighted by the superstar group Class of ’99. We were then introduced to the first member of the faculty,...

Director Jason Eisener (“Treevenge,” Hobo with a Shotgun, V/H/S/2, and Vice TV’s hit “Dark Side of the Ring”) is back with the horror/sci-fi movie Kids vs. Aliens, releasing in Theaters, On Demand, and Digital on Friday, January 20, 2023. It pits a group of plucky kids against malevolent aliens that crash-landed in their backyard, and the aliens don’t play fair.
As the kids aptly put it in the film, “Fuck space.”
This week’s streaming picks embrace that attitude and feature goopy, gory, and occasionally tentacled alien invasions. As always, here’s where you can stream them this week…

Sydney, Oct 25 (Ians) Australian batswoman Grace Harris has heaped praise on Ms Dhoni, saying the former Indian skipper is a "fantastic finisher of the game" and she has been taking inspiration from him.
Harris on Sunday hammered 53 from 37 deliveries to help Brisbane Heat register a seven-wicket win over the Perth Scorchers on the opening day of the sixth edition of the Women's Big Bash League (Wbbl).
During their chase of 133, Harris started off slowly, collecting 11 runs from her first 18 deliveries. However, just as the required run rate started to climb above seven in the 11th over, Harris -- just like Dhoni -- launched a brutal attack, hitting 39 runs from 18 balls to quickly bring the chase to heel, and while she departed with 10 runs required, Georgia Redmayne (37*) and Laura Harris (7*) were able to seal the win with three overs to spare at the North Sydney Oval.

Spike Lee took Cannes by storm earlier this year with “BlacKkKlansman,” his latest joint based on “some fo’ real shit” about Ron Stallworth, an African-American police officer who manages to infiltrate the Ku Klux Klan with the help of a fellow white officer in the 1970s. As IndieWire’s David Ehrlich wrote in his review, “If ‘Birth of a Nation’ was history written with lightning, ‘BlacKkKlansman’ is the roll of thunder we’ve been waiting for ever since.”
“BlacKkKlansman” is now in theaters and has already taken the box office by storm. To celebrate the film’s expansion in theaters on August 13, we’re giving away one grand prize pack, which includes a signed copy of Ron Stallworth’s book, which inspired the film; a digital download of the film’s soundtrack; and a movie poster signed by Spike Lee, John David Washington, Ron Stallworth, Topher Grace and Laura Harris.

Maternity Syndrome: Tierney’s Undefined Comedy Explores Notions of Motherhood
What begins as a concept full of pleasurably subversive possibilities quickly turns into yet another diluted tale of female arrested development in Preggoland, revolving around an emotionally stunted woman who learns an important lesson in the nick of time, thereby exponentially enhancing her own life experience and those in her orbit. Though it’s not as obnoxiously adolescent as its Diablo Cody inspired title suggests, actress turned screenwriter Sonja Bennett’s screenplay fails to use the concept to explore the actual issues underlying her character’s inability to successfully complete the normal trajectory of her sanctioned heteronormative peer group. And so, Jacob Tiernay‘s fourth feature film becomes another one of those wanly charming comedies about how to curb one’s drifting, wayward attitude in order to gain re-admittance into the fold.

The Santa Barbara International Film Festival has unveiled its 2015 line-up which includes films representing 54 countries, 23 world premieres and 53 U.S. premieres. The U.S. premiere of Niki Caro’s McFarland USA will close out the 30th fest. Based on the 1987 true story and starring Kevin Costner and Maria Bello, the film follows novice runners from McFarland, an economically challenged town in California’s farm-rich Central Valley, as they give their all to build a cross-country team under the direction of Coach Jim White (Costner), a newcomer to their predominantly Latino high school. The unlikely band of runners overcomes the odds to forge not only a championship cross-country team but an enduring legacy as well.
The festival runs from January 27-February 7.

A self-acknowledged "showcase for Academy Award frontrunners," the Santa Barbara International Film Festival is often overlooked for the actual films that earn it festival status. An amalgamation of international discoveries and ’merica’s circuit highlights, the Sbiff curates a week of best-of-the-best to pair with their star-praising. The 2015 edition offers another expansive selection, bookended by two films that aren’t on any radars just yet. Sbiff will open with "Desert Dancer," producer Richard Raymond’s directorial debut. Starring Reece Ritchie and Frieda Pinto, the drama follows a group of friends who wave off the harsh political climate of Iran’s 2009 presidential election in favor of forming a dance team, picking up moves from Michael Jackson, Gene Kelly and Rudolf Nureyev thanks to the magic of YouTube. The festival will close with "McFarland, USA," starring Kevin Costner and Maria Bello. Telling the 1987 true story of a Latino high school’s underdog cross-country team,...

If you’re at all in touch with your geek side, you already know about all the great horror movies that are Christmas-themed. Chances are you’ve stumbled across Silent Night, Deadly Night, Black Christmas, or Santa’s Slay. Everybody knows Batman Returns and Die Hard take place around December 25th. However, did you know that several disasters have occurred around the most wonderful time of the year?
Anchor Bay Entertainment and the SyFy Channel spent the past few years reminding us that even the holidays aren’t safe from catastrophic events which could bring about the end of the world. Disaster-oriented Christmas movies were becoming an annual tradition up until 2013. The two media giants banned together for three straight years to bring us a trilogy of B-movie entertainment that I think it’s high time they continue.

If you’re going to call your film Snowmageddon, you really need to deliver on the frosty destruction above all else, but instead the made-for-tv Syfy movie gets bogged down in hapless melodrama and a contrived holiday plot that distracts what audiences want to see when they buy a film with this kind of title. Every now and then we get a few minutes of bad CGI terror as killer snowballs fall from the sky and giant spikes (what these have to do with winter or snow is beyond us) jut up from the ground, but they’re scattered throughout a story about a sparsely populated cast that we’re never given a chance to care about. Throwing in a familiar face like Laura Harris (Dead Like Me, 24) doesn’t help either since the disappointment over the weak element of destruction is quite overpowering.

Herrington High, Ohio, a small-town high school. All of a sudden, the teachers start changing attitude. When Casey (Elijah Wood) and Delilah (Jordana Brewster) have to hide in a closet in the teacher’s lounge, they witness the strangulation of Nurse Harper by two of them. Shocked, they manage to flee. Only moments later, the nurse seems to be very alive, but also somehow changed, like all the teachers and most of the students. Only Casey, Delilah and four others seem to be suspicious. Proof of an alien infection is finally brought by the chemistry teacher, who also points out a way to kill the infected humans.

HBO Kristin Bauer van Straten and Fiona Shaw on “True Blood.”
Fairy blood apparently does weird things to people. And we thought V was addictive. Eric is giddy and drunk, pinching Sookie’s posterior and giddily running around the front yard. King Bill is interrogating Pam at Fangtasia about Eric’s whereabouts. It’s treason to lie to a king, remember. He tells Pam she’s not supposed to think, she’s supposed to “follow protocol.” Um, you’re talking to Pam.

I once woke up with a headache in a strange location where nobody recognised me and days were missing from my life. Turns out I was recovering from a hangover at a party I’d crashed in a student squat. Luckily, I escaped before anybody raised too much objection. Things don’t go so smoothly for Dr Martin Harris (Taken's Liam Neeson), however, in the action thriller Unknown. Somebody has stolen his life, wife and probably his Blockbuster rental card too.
Jaume Collet-Serra, who is better known for directing the pair of horror films Orphan and the appalling House of Wax, does a better job adapting Didier Van-Cauwelaert’s 2003 novel - 'Hors de moi’, (Out of my head). Los Angeles, CA, United States (Ahn Entertainment) - Laurence Fishburne's aspiring porn star daughter has been ordered to pay ,000 in restitution to her assault victim Thursday. Montana Fishburne, who has apparently embarrassed her dad after starring in an adult film, pleaded no contest to assaulting her ex-boyfriend's girlfriend earlier this year.
Montana was not in court when Judge Elizabeth Harris ordered her to pay her victim's medical bills. She was represented by Shawn Holley, who told E! News that she is in full compliance with the terms of her probation.
The 19-year-old celebuspawn was charged with simple battery and false imprisonment last year after breaking into an unnamed woman's home and forcing her into the bathroom and beating her repeatedly.
She was placed on three years probation and sentenced to 90 days in jail, although she got credit for time spent at the Seacliff Recovery Center.

Well, this should be the final time we hear about Montana Fishburne. Unless, of course, she decides to do something else to embarrass her dad. The porn-loving offspring of Laurence Fishburne was ordered on Thursday to pay $9,000 in restitution to the victim in her assault case. Fishburne was not in court today, but was represented by her attorney, Shawn Holley. The money is to cover the victim's medical bills, ruled Judge Elizabeth Harris, and Fishburne must send the check to the city attorney's office. Meanwhile, Holly tells E! News that Fishburne is currently in full compliance with the terms of her probation. On March 1, Fishburne pleaded no contest to assault with a deadly weapon and to...

A couple at an abandoned building are given directions on where to find their son. The wife, Elizabeth Harris (Helen Slater) tells her husband, Charles (Thomas Calabro) to do exactly what the man said to find their son, and to put his hands on the railings. I knew that was to cover over any prints or evidence that may have been left behind. They find a decomposing Db in the car on the rooftop, which they believe to be their son, Jeremy (Zachery Spicer). Sid's (Robert Joy) out of the morgue again, in another difficult retrieval of the Db. He says the Cod could be anything from a few days to a few months. Shouldn't he have said Tod? Hawkes (Hill Harper) believes due to the weather, the humidity, etc, this will prove difficult. Jo (Sela Ward) has to cover her nose due to the putrid smell given off by the Db.

Plot: A doctor (Neeson) is set to speak at a bio-tech conference that could change the world, but he gets into an accident. Suddenly, his wife (Jones) doesn’t recognize him and he must try to prove he’s really Dr. Martin Harris.
Who’S It For? It’s your basic run-of-the-mill thriller with a good mystery brewing. Spoiler Alert — there will be some things that are discussed in this review. Don’t worry, I do my best when it comes to spoilers so if you aren’t already out the door buying your ticket to Unknown you should be safe. Don’t trust other critics with spoilers though … ever.

Stars in Rewind is a feature that looks at what our favorite movie stars were doing before they were our favorite movie stars. You can find it here every other Monday.
Before Ryan Reynolds found himself trapped in a coffin in 'Buried,' and before his debut as Hal Jordan in 'Green Lantern' this summer, he was Billy Simpson on the Canadian-American teen drama, 'Fifteen.' Canada's Ytv and America's Nickelodeon aired the award-nominated soap opera from 1991 to 1993 and followed all the dramas of the students of Hillside School.
The series talked about all the usual angsty teenage suspects like dating, drugs and alcohol, family issues, cliques and peer pressure. It was basically like a much tamer version of Aaron Spelling's 'Beverly Hills, 90210.' The show even had its own bad boy (Dylan) character, and 'Fifteen's' "Peach Pit" was called the Avalon.

Defying Gravity was apparently described to networks as a Grey’s Anatomy in space.” I assumed this meant that it would be a medical show set in space, but it seems that the Grey’s Anatomy reference is merely to allude to the drama (which is often of the romantic nature, despite the “Hormone Activated Libido Oppressors” the crew members wear). It lasted only one season (and a short one, at 13 episodes) and received poor ratings, which could just be due to a very small if at all existent overlap among doctor-show fans and space-show fans who, as I did, became confused by the Ga thing. (This also means I’ll be putting off my pitch for ER Trek until the world is truly ready.)
The series, set about 40 years into the future, revolves around eight astronauts, four men and four women (even Steven), chosen to travel the Solar System for six years.

A prime time summer series launched during the dog days of August is never a good show of faith on the part of the network. Last August, ABC presented Defying Gravity , a thirteen episode science fiction series which lasted a mere eight weeks.
A noble effort, it failed to garner much interest and even fewer ratings. The series was said to be inspired by the BBC series Space Odyssey: Voyage to the Planets, and became an international effort co-produced by the BBC, Fox Television Studios, and Omni Film Productions in association with Canadian broadcasters CTV Television Network, Space, and German broadcaster ProSieben.
This misfire is now available as a complete season set on Fox Home Entertainment and you can decide for yourself what went wrong. The premise begins in 2052 with the launch of a six year mission throughout the solar system, making the first visits to several planets. Along the way,...

ABC's new outer-space drama debuted on Sunday night. Will Defying Gravity be allowed to complete its mission or, like so many shows before it, be lost in space?
Defying Gravity follows the adventures of eight international astronauts as they fly a spaceship named Antares. On a top-secret mission, their lives are being recorded and telecast on Earth as part of a documentary. Despite the fact that the crewmembers wear libido-suppressing devices, there are plenty of romantic entanglements.
The show features the talents of Andrew Airlie, Christina Cox, Paula Garces, Laura Harris, Peter Howitt, Florentine Lahme, Karen LeBlanc, Ron Livingston, Ty Olsson, Zahf Paroo, Eyal Podell, Maxim Roy, Dylan Taylor, and Malik Yoba.
The sci-fi drama's storyline is strangely similar to the failed pilot for Virtuality that aired a month ago. Defying Gravity is a Canadian series that's co-produced by CTV, Omni Film Productions Limited, and Fox Television Studios. Filming has...

As rumored for months, Ridley Scott—who made the first one 30 years ago—is going to return to direct an Alien (pictured left on the cover of Starlog #23) prequel for 20th Century Fox. At one point earlier this year, Scott was considering only Producing a new Alien project. This one, Variety reports, will have a script by John Spaihts (who’s very busy writing genre film fare). For the rest of Spaihts’ Sf agenda, see this.
Folks at Pixar Animation Studios are contemplating a Monsters, Inc. sequel. Follow-ups to Toy Story and Cars are already in the works.
Sci-fi TV
HBO has renewed True Blood for a third season, airing in summer 2010. Looks like it’s pre-empted this Sunday though.
This weekend’s genre TV highlights include the usual reruns: Ghost Whisperer (“Slow Burn” with a ghostly Mom,...

Christina Cox has more than 40 roles to her credit but some love her best as Kim in Better than Chocolate, for her turn as the bisexual private detective Vicki in Blood Ties, and one half of the lesbian crime fighting couple in Nikki & Nora. Christina's newest sci-fi series, Defying Gravity doesn't have her playing a lesbian or bisexual, but she does get to wear form-fitting space suits and rattle off scientific jargon as a mission biologist. What's better than a hot nerd in space? Nothing, that's what.
Christina talked to AfterEllen.com recently about her new show, which is described by a production executive as a "sci-fi premise, told in a female-friendly way." She also gave us some dish on Ladycops, the show-within-a-show from the web series, 3Way, and shared her thoughts about this year's Hot 100 List.

On the 40th anniversary year of the Apollo 11 lunar landing, ABC is setting out on an outerpace endeavo of their own with the premier of "Defying Gravity" on August 2. The saucy space series follows the zero gravity fortunes of eight international astronauts enlisted on a long and risky mission.
Inspired by a BBC docudrama "Space Odyssey: Voyage to the Planets," the puzzling and often pulse racing mission of the Antares and her crew is spliced with flashbacks from the character's lives back on Earth.
From executive producers James Parriott and Michael Edelstein, the "Defying Gravity" is led by a sizable cast. Ron Livingston ("Office Space," "Sex and the City") stars as the vessel engineer Maddux Donner. Laura Harris ("24") plays on-board geologist Zoe Barnes, one of the many scientific brains working on the ship.
Malik Yoba, Christina Cox, Paula Garces and Zahf Paroo are just a few of talented names...
