Ben Stiller returns to the world of sports with an all-star cast for a new film. Red Hour Films and Rivulet Films will re-team for the upcoming pickleball comedy, The Dink, which is set to star Jake Johnson in the leading role, with Mary Steenburgen (Book Club series) and Ed Harris (Pollock) also set to star. Ben Stiller (Zoolander) and former tennis champion Andy Roddick will have key supporting roles. Josh Greenbaum will direct the original screenplay from Sean Clements (Workaholics). Principal photography is set to begin in Los Angeles in November.
The Dink follows a washed-up tennis pro (Johnson) who, in trying to save a club in crisis and win his father’s respect, is forced to break a solemn vow and do the one thing he swore he’d never do: play pickleball.

Earlier this summer, Hulu shared the first look at Chad Powers, starring Glen Powell, and we all became instantly interested in the upcoming comedy. What updates have surfaced since? We’re here to help you keep up with everything to know about Chad Powers so far.
I’ll be honest here, as much as I love Glen Powell, I can’t say I’m a huge fan of the first look Hulu shared. Let’s just say, the Twisters movie star is looking very different. But make no mistake, Powell is a brilliant actor and a hilarious one, too, which is all the upcoming comedy Chad Powers needs. That said, the first look did not discourage us from pinning the comedy so we can check back as more details are known.

In what seems almost like a cleansing ritual after wrestling with studio horror franchises, David Gordon Green’s Nutcrackers sees the director return closer to his indie roots, observing characters that sprout organically from their rural or small-town environments. This cute fish-out-of-water comedy about the unexpected rewards of a found family tries to approximate the naturalism, lyricism and raw emotion of Green’s early works George Washington and All the Real Girls, but it’s too predictably sentimental to have a comparable effect.
The idea came from Green meeting the four spirited young sons of an old friend, and Leland Douglas’ screenplay appears to allow latitude for semi-improvisation from those boys, playing versions of themselves. That gives the film a disarming sincerity that dovetails with Ben Stiller’s sensitive, understated performance as an uptight Chicagoan thrust into the inconvenient role of parent. But the abundance of montages and exuberant slo-mo...

No doubt, the Janson brothers — Homer, Ulysses, Atlas and Arlo — are lovely, well-behaved kids in real life. Few would say the same about the undisciplined orphans these four boys play in director David Gordon Green’s odd-choice Toronto Film Festival opener, “Nutcrackers”: a near-feral wolfpack who depend on their uptight uncle, Michael Maxwell (Ben Stiller), to spare them the indignity of an orphanage after their parents die in a car accident.
A big-city, fancy-shoes sort of guy, Michael shows up at his late sister’s farmhouse driving a yellow Porsche and promptly steps in a fresh pile of dung. Christmas is right around the corner, and Michael has committed a few days to sorting out the estate — a task that includes trying to get the Kicklighter boys adopted. Then it’s back to Chicago, where a career-defining real estate deal is about to close.

Ben Stiller just got his comedy mojo back in the most unexpected of places.
Nutcrackers, the official opening-night film of the 2024 Toronto Film Festival, is not the kind of movie you expect to see at serious film festivals, which tend to go for darker or less obviously commercial fare. So it is a bit of a surprise to see TIFF launching with a purely entertaining and heartwarming family holiday movie that will make you laugh, cry and walk out feeling good. Nothing wrong with that.
This is the kind of movie Hollywood used to deliver all the time but has clearly forgotten how to make — until now. Among the inspirations for director David Gordon Green were The Bad News Bears, Six Pack, Uncle Buck and Overboard. You might expect John Hughes was back from the dead, along with this genre. I would go back even further to the ’50s and ’60s,...

The Toronto Film Festival on Thursday returned post-strikes with Hollywood star wattage as Ben Stiller and director David Gordon Green gave a glittering lift-off for their opening night film Nutcrackers.
Gordon Green introduced Stiller to the crowd at Roy Thomson Hall in the Canadian city that looked primed for film fest fun with the opening night comedy. The Zoolander and Tropic of Thunder star then recalled making movies in Canada.
“When people will talk to me sometimes about the Night at the Museum movies, they’ll say, Wow, what’s it like to shoot in the Museum of Natural History? And I’ll say it was actually a warehouse in Vancouver,” Stiller recounted.
“I’ve made a bunch of movies in Canada, and it’s always been an amazing experience,” Stiller added. His comments followed Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau touting Canada as a foreign location destination for Hollywood. “Our...

“Twisters” star Glen Powell is barely recognizable in the first photo from his upcoming Hulu comedy series, “Chad Powers.”
The streamer announced Thursday that production has begun on the project, which Powell is coproducing with “Loki” executive producer and writer Michael Waldron.
The actor, who was a master of disguise in Richard Linklater’s comic feature “Hit Man” on Netflix, is playing hotheaded quarterback Russ Holliday, who in “Tootsie”-esque twist, is forced to go under cover as the affable Chad Powers to keep playing football.
Powell and Waldron cowrote the pilot. Steve Zahn, Toby Huss, Perry Mattfeld, Wynn Everett, Frankie A. Rodriguez and Quentin Plair costar.

Among the films playing at this year’s prestigious Venice Film Festival is a documentary called From Darkness to Light, all about Jerry Lewis’ notorious 1972 Holocaust-set dramedy The Day the Clown Cried. The film was famously never released to the public, who, to be fair, weren’t exactly clamoring for a movie in which the guy from The Nutty Professor plays a circus clown who ushers children into the gas chambers.
Lewis’ directorial catastrophe has become the stuff of legend. Hardly any footage has ever surfaced online, and reports that The Day the Clown Cried would be screened by the Library of Congress last month turned out to be false.
But despite its pop-cultural infamy, this cursed project came close to being remade with another slapstick comedian with a reputation for being a huge asshole: Chevy Chase.

Rebel Wilson’s The Deb will close the Toronto Film Festival on September 15 after all. This is after the actress claimed on social media that the pic’s EPs blocked her feature directorial debut from making its world premiere as the closing-night title at TIFF.
Meanwhile, David Gordon Green’s Nutcrackers with Ben Stiller is set to open the fest on September 5. Both films will be making their world premiere.
Wilson on July 10 took to social to bash her backers for getting in the way of her feature musical’s debut at TIFF, saying for them to “turn around and say that no, the movie can’t premiere, is just beyond devastating.”
She claimed in her post that the business partners Amanda Ghost and Gregory Cameron had “bad behavior.”

Nutcrackers, David Gordon Green’s heartfelt comedy starring Ben Stiller, is set to open the 2024 Toronto Film Festival on Sept. 5.
The TIFF opener — marking Stiller’s first starring role in a movie since Mike White’s Brad’s Status and Noah Baumbach’s Netflix family drama The Meyerowitz Stories in 2017 — will have a world premiere at Roy Thomson Hall, which is filled with ordinary moviegoers (and not only industry people as in Cannes and Venice).
Written by Leland Douglas, Nutcrackers follows Mike (Stiller), a straight-laced workaholic who has to travel to rural Ohio to care for his four nephews after their parents die in a car accident. After weeks of farm-life mayhem, Mike realizes he won’t have to find a new home for the orphaned children. They found a new home for him.

This year’s Toronto International Film Festival will open with a familiar face: filmmaker David Gordon Green’s latest, the world premiere of his heartfelt comedy “Nutcrackers,” will kick off the festival on September 5. While Green is a regular at the annual festival, screening everything from his Jake Gyllenhaal-starring Boston Marathon biopic “Stronger” to his horror re-quel “Halloween” at the event, 2024 marks the first time he will officially open the fall fest.
The film also sounds as if it marks a return to early form for the longtime auteur, who has spent his most recent years helming a series of horror-centric sequels and remakes, including three “Halloween” films and last year’s “The Exorcist: Believer.” For his newest feature, Green seems to be reinvested in the kind of personal drama that drove early films like “All the Real Girls” and “Undertow,” albeit with a slightly lighter touch.

Exclusive: The Sydney Sweeney & Paul Walter Hauser title, Americana, which was one of the prolific acquisition titles from last year’s SXSW, has finally seen its worldwide rights go to Lionsgate.
Why did a movie with big stars and 100% on Rotten Tomatoes take so long to sell? I understand part of the hold-up stems from the pic’s financier, Bron Studios, going into bankruptcy.
The Tony Tost written and directed movie follows local outsiders and outcasts in a small South Dakota town whose lives violently intertwine after a rare artifact falls onto the black market. Americana also stars pop singer Halsey, Eric Dane, Zahn McClarnon, Gavin Maddox Bergman, Simon Rex, Derek Hinkey, Toby Huss, and Harriet Sansom Harris.
Pic is produced by Alex Saks. EPs are Aaron L. Gilbert, Steven Thibault, Alison-Jane Roney, Paris Kassidokostas-Latsis, Terry Dougas, and Jean-Luc de Fanti.

Four years ago, actor Dave Franco made his feature directorial debut with the horror film The Rental, which happened to star his wife Alison Brie. Now Deadline reports that Franco and Brie are set to share the screen in the upcoming horror film Together, which they will also be producing, with first-time feature filmmaker Michael Shanks writing and directing.
Tango, Picturestart, and 30West are providing the financing, while Picturestart, Tango, 1.21, and Princess Pictures produce alongside Franco and Brie.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but Deadline was able to learn that Together is about “the horror of co-dependency, told in a unique way.” Of course, they’re not ready to tell us just how the film will be approaching this subject matter in a unique way.
Franco and Brie clearly love working together. In addition to The Rental, they’ve also co-starred in The Little Hours, The Disaster Artist...

David Gordon Green, the filmmaker behind Universal’s Halloween trilogy and The Exorcist: Believer, is leaving horror behind to direct a family drama starring Ben Stiller about a man connecting with his unruly nephews after a tragic accident claims their parents’ lives. The feature-length project is a hard left turn at Albuquerque for Green, who’s spent most of his recent filmmaker career bringing Halloween’s Michael Myers and William Peter Blatty’s Exorcist back to the horror fold. Is Green leaving horror for good, or is Nutcrackers a breath of fresh air before he returns to the bloody and brutal genre?
On Wednesday, Rivulet Films, Rough House Pictures, and Red Hour Films announced that Linda Cardellini, Edi Patterson, Tim Heidecker, and Toby Huss have joined Ben Stiller in the film based on a script by Leland Douglas.

Horror doesn’t always have to be jump scare after jump scare or a non-stop gore fest. It doesn’t have to have Aliens, Terminators, or Predators to say nothing of any of the other monsters we’ve seen over the years. Movies that don’t include those coveted horror checklists typically get lumped into the thriller category like Silence of the Lambs or even Get Out. Funny how those are the movies that the Globes and Oscars want to award. Without a shadow of a doubt horror films that can be labeled something a little more friendly to draw more audience demographics or get better ink in reviews. I’m here...

Pierce Brosnan hasn’t returned to his James Bond roots, but he’s definitely channeling 007 in the trailer for “Fast Charlie,” the crime thriller that’s also notable for featuring actor James Caan’s final performance.
Brosnan plays Charlie Swift, a contract killer with a serious on-the-job headache: The victim of his most recent assassination is missing his head. That’s a problem if Swift wants to prove the job was done and get paid for it, and more importantly keep the man who hired him — a ruthless New Orleans gangster — happy.
“I have to convince a certain person that the body in that trunk out there is indeed Rolo,” Swift states.
“Something happen to his face?” Marcie, who’s played by Morena Baccarin, says in the video clip.
“It’s missing. Along with the rest of his head,” Charlie answers.

"Be good to yourself, Charlie, and get as far away from here as you can." Vertical has unveiled the official trailer for an assassin action film called Fast Charlie, the latest feature from acclaimed filmmaker Phillip Noyce. Pierce Brosnan stars as Charlie Swift – a fixer with a problem: the thug he's after is now missing his head, and Charlie will only be paid if the body can be identified. Enter Marcie Kramer, the victim's ex-wife and a woman with all the skills Charlie needs - so they partner up. Along the way, Charlie and Marcie fight to protect the legacy of Charlie's best friend and mentor, Stan Mullen (James Caan in his final performance), while bringing down Beggar and his entire crew. The cast also includes Morena Baccarin, Gbenga Akinnagbe, Toby Huss, along with Sharon Gless and Caan. That little blue scope on his gun is an amusing detail. It's...

Pierce Brosnan has a very particular set of skills in Vertical’s Fast Charlie trailer, and he’s not afraid to show you how he keeps them sharp. The upcoming thriller from director Phillip Noyce features Brosnan as Charlie Swift, a fixer whose latest victim is missing his head, and it’s up to Charlie to prove the rest of his body belongs to his intended target.
Based on the novel “Gun Monkeys” by Victor Gischler, Fast Charlie has the following synopsis:
Charlie Swift (Pierce Brosnan), aka “Fast Charlie,” is a fixer with a problem: the target he’s whacked is missing his head. And he must prove it’s the intended target to the man who paid for the hit – New Orleans’ most prominent and most ruthless mobster, Beggar Mercado (Gbenga Akinnagbe). Charlie enlists Marcie Kramer (Morena Baccarin), the victim’s ex-wife and a woman with the backbone and skillset Charlie needs.

Just like in George A. Romero's 1978 original, the bulk of Zack Snyder's 2004 remake of "Dawn of the Dead" takes place in a shopping mall. In both films, a group of still-living people take refuge while scads of the undead shamble up against the walls outside. The commentary, of course, is that even after zombification, people still want to worship at consumerism's most powerful megachurch: the modern mall. All their memories and humanity have been erased by zombie-ism, but shopping remains one of their basest instincts. It's hardly a nuanced or complex theme, but it does make both films slightly more interesting.
Snyder's film is more energetic and playful than Romero's, an odd thing to say, given how turgid, humorless, and self-important the bulk of Snyder's films tend to be. One might credit the film's levity to the notoriously jocular screenwriter James Gunn, the director of the "Guardians of the Galaxy" movies.
