About 20 years ago, I was on a judging panel for a photography competition, and one of the other judges was Martin Parr. He was charming and affable, almost teddy bear-ish. He was also utterly ruthless. When it came to deciding which photographs were worthy of a prize, he went through the selection swiftly – no, no, yes, no – without hesitation or doubt. His eye was impeccable.
Has he always known what makes a good photograph? “Oh yes,” says Parr. “Right from the beginning. Total conviction. I knew I would be a photographer from the age of 13, 14, and I knew what was good even then. I was obsessive about photography. All artists are obsessive, I think.”

The 1991 spoof Hot Shots! found itself to a small degree mirroring the front pages of the newspapers – and 20th Century Fox was worried.
Save for a few sporadic examples – the first Scary Movie, for instance, and more recently The Goes Wrong Show on the BBC – it feels like the era of the successful screen spoof came to a juddering halt in the 1990s. In 1993, we had the second of two Hot Shots! films, and in 1994 the Naked Gun trilogy came to an end. After those? It was slim pickings.
There were further attempts to breathe fresh life into the spoof – Spy Hard, Jane Austen’s Mafia!, Wrongfully Accused – but nothing that could live up to some of the movies we got in the 80s and early 90s.
In 1991 in particular, the spoof was a box office draw. This was the year when many big budget Hollywood productions came in well below box office expectations.

“There are known unknowns,” the ever-shifty Donald Rumsfeld famously once said back in 2002 to a reporter’s question about supposed links between Saddam Hussein and known terrorist groups. “That is to say, there are things that we know we don’t know,” the then Defense Secretary added.
Well, this morning a week before Christmas and Hanukkah, we know that 10 film and TV projects have been awarded $108.6 million in California tax incentives to further help jumpstart production in the heart of Hollywood. Truth be told, with names like “Untitled Disney+ Project”, and “Untitled Apple Studios Series II”, there are several projects that just got some sweet credits from the Golden State’s $330 million annual fund that we don’t know a lot about.
What we do know with this somewhat unexpected pre-holiday spree from the California Film Commission administered program, is that they are anticipated to create 3,583 cast and crew jobs.

One of the earlier running gags on Matt Stone's and Trey Parker's animated sitcom "South Park" was the repeated, comedic death of Kenny McCormick. Kenny (Stone) was the best friend of Stan (Parker), Kyle (also Stone), and Cartman (also Parker), and he seemed to be the most ... worldly of the four. Kenny's face was usually covered mostly by an outsize orange coat, and all of his dialogue was muffled and incomprehensible. Later, it would be established that Kenny was incredibly impoverished and that he seemed to know a lot more about sex, drugs, and crime than an eight-year-old ought to.
For the first six seasons of the series, from 1997 to 2002, Kenny died in almost every single episode. Kenny's deaths were usually very demonstrative, with the young boy being impaled on a flagpole or cut in half by a chainsaw. When Kenny died, one of his friends would briefly respond,...

War films continue to be one of the most popular genres in cinematic history, producing epic films that capture the very best and worst of humanity. Many films about war focus on the most significant conflicts, like World Wars I and II and the Vietnam War, but some of the best war films of all time shed a spotlight on some lesser-known wars that are just as impactful and compelling. These films show the harrowing atrocities committed around the globe and educate viewers on battles and wars they may know very little about.
Films such as The Killing Fields showcase the brutal realities of the Cambodian Civil War and genocide, offering an unflinching look into one of Asia's most gruesome conflicts in a war film that is still as impressive today. Classics like Waltz with Bashir examine the Lebanon War that started in 1982 in a unique format, with a graphic...

Going in, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is something of a known quantity. The first-person shooter series is a monolith, almost perennially the best-selling game of the year and a product of consistently high quality, but Call of Duty also seemingly possesses an inability to overcome its inertia. I played the original, World War 2-centered trilogy, but really cut my teeth on the series during the halcyon days between CoD 4 and the original Black Ops. Nearly two decades later, it feels like I'm still playing some souped-up version of Modern Warfare, with a fresh coat of paint courtesy of 2019's soft reboot of the same name.
This isn't singularly a detractor, but a through line to Black Ops 6, a game that doesn't really feel new despite some bells and whistles, but instead familiar, stable, and optimized. When you play Call of Duty, there's no mistaking the fact that you're playing...

The Black Ops series within Call of Duty has long been one of the more unique corners of the franchise. Setting aside the battles of modern warfare, it delves into deeper waters of Cold War espionage and twisted conspiracies. Black Ops 6 marks the sixth installment in this stylistically distinctive branch of the franchise.
Developer Treyarch took their time with this one, spending a full four years in development. Their extra efforts are evident upon diving in. The campaign whisks us back to 1991 for probably the most globe-trotting adventure yet. A renegade CIA squad is on the run, pursuing mysterious links between recent missions and the emergence of a shadowy paramilitary group called The Pantheon.
Leading the squad is veteran Woods, along with a mix of returning and new faces. Stepping back into Woods’ combat boots is Case Calderon, embarking on a wild journey that sees them infiltrate palaces, agencies, and more across America,...

Audiovisual Producers Finland (Apfi) has unveiled its Mipcom slate.
The “diverse” lineup “highlights the extraordinary storytelling coming out of Finland,” teased executive director Laura Kuulasmaa.
The second season of the documentary series “Untold Arctic Wars” will focus on Cold War espionage and military conflicts in the region.
After the blockbuster success of the first season, which found placements in almost every major territory across the Americas, Europe, Mena and Asia, Tvf will be partnering again with Ntrnz to bring this latest season to buyers around the world, said Sam Joyce, Tvf’s senior acquisitions manager.
“Factual buyers are hungry for fresh angles on contemporary history and this series offers that in spades. With brand new testimony and newly unearthed archive, it promises to challenge our understanding of the global distribution of power during the Cold War years. From Sly Stallone at the White House to Hulk Hogan at the RNC, Donald Trump has made no secret of his affinity for hyper-masculine men. But will the US fall for his action movie-inspired strongman shtick one more time?
There’s a real possibility that Donald Trump sees no distinction between the terms “strongman” and “strong man”. At the presidential debate last month, Kamala Harris said world leaders were “laughing” at Trump. In response, Trump brought up his endorsement from the autocratic Hungarian prime minister, Viktor Orbán: “One of the most respected men – they call him a strong man. He’s a tough person, smart.”
Two months before that debate, the Republican national convention played host to a strong man – or, at least, to a man who exemplified a certain 80s-kitsch version of strength. Hulk Hogan, the former standard-bearer of the then World Wrestling Federation (WWF), rose to fame as a human cartoon character,...

On Monday, former President Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign photographed an event at Arlington National Cemetery, treating the burial grounds as a political venue despite federal laws expressly barring such behavior.
A “verbal and physical altercation” reportedly took place during a wreath-laying ceremony when Trump’s staffers tried to enter the area of the cemetery reserved for recently deceased service members.
The incident, which created a firestorm, is part of a broader pattern. Trump has for years demonstrated a flippant attitude toward veterans and a general lack of knowledge about military history.

There just aren’t enough drama reruns in the world to keep TNT afloat in its current state, so Warner Bros. Discovery is changing things up. Really, it’s turning back the clock.
As first reported by the Wall Street Journal and confirmed by IndieWire, Wbd is looking to bring original scripted drama back to TNT, which, when it wasn’t airing live sports, had become a dumping ground for drama reruns and action films. The company will also open the WB movie library to reboot several films as made-for-tv movies or series for TNT. We’re probably not going to get a “Batgirl” or “Coyote vs. Acme” series.
Why the reversion in strategy? Well, Warner Bros. Discovery recently lost its most-valuable asset, the NBA, to Amazon Prime Video (essentially). An NBA-less TNT just does not command the roughly $3-per-customer rate that cable providers pay Wbd. That’s quite pricey — but it’s no ESPN.

The Librarians’ journey has become a real page-turner.
One week after The CW confirmed that The Librarians: The Next Chapter — its continuation of the TV-movie franchise that begat a four-season TNT series — had been unceremoniously pulled from its fall schedule, the Wall Street Journal is reporting that the series has been acquired by TNT, as one small part of the cabler’s mission to beef up its depleted drama slate.

Warner Bros. Discovery’s lawsuit to keep the NBA is ongoing, but if it fails the channel will need new programming options in 2025.
What’s next for TNT? That question is on the minds of many TV and entertainment industry observers these days, and it’s a fair one. TNT will continue to air live NBA games this season, but starting in 2025 there’s a good chance the cable network will lose its NBA rights to Amazon’s Prime Video. An ongoing lawsuit to try to stop that from happening has not yet been decided, but it appears that Warner Bros. Discovery is already seeking programming alternatives for TNT in preparation for a post-nba future.
Key Details: TNT has greenlit its first original drama series since WarnerMedia and Discovery merged in 2022. The channel has also acquired “The Librarians: The Next Chapter” from The CW. Wbd has made concerted efforts to...

The 1992 Disney film Aladdin is a lot of things. An accurate representation of the Middle East is not one of them.
That said, since the movie takes place in the fictional city of “Agrabah,” it’s easy to argue that it was never meant to portray the real world at all. The city was, after all, invented wholly by the creators, since the story from Arabian Nights that it’s based on originally took place in China, which, I’ll admit, is confusing enough that I understand simplifying it to minimize the amount of cultures and geography packed into an animated movie for children.
The city of Agrabah, however, wasn’t the first location change made by the movie’s creators. When they first started working on the movie that would become a modern classic, they set it in a very real city: Baghdad. Most likely because it was one...

After taking a $9.1 billion write-down on its linear networks business, in part due to the company’s loss of NBA rights, Warner Bros. Discovery is ramping up its investment in programming for TNT.
The cable network has greenlit “Debriefing the President” (working title), a four-hour miniseries about CIA analyst John Nixon’s 2003 interrogation of Saddam Hussein, in which he learned about the potential consequences of the invasion, the humanitarian horrors and geopolitical turbulences that would follow Saddam’s deposing.
The series is produced by Ar Content and Big Dreams Entertainment for TNT. Alexander Rodnyansky, Joel Kinnaman, Stuart Manashil, Michael Kupisk, Peter Gerwe, Shelley Browning, and Leslie Greif serve as EPs, while Cristi Bostanescu and Eric Tomosunas serve as producers and Krzysztof Skonieczny directs.
TNT has also acquired “The Librarians: The Next Chapter,” a sequel to supernatural adventure series “The Librarians.” The project was initially set to lead The CW’s 2024-25 fall season.

“The Librarians: The Next Chapter” is heading home to TNT.
The spinoff series was originally slated to air on The CW this fall, but it was reported last week that the show had been pulled from the broadcaster’s schedule.
Now, the Wall Street Journal reports that the series will air on TNT instead. It marks a homecoming of sorts for the series, which serves as a followup to the series “The Librarians,” which was itself a spinoff of the “Librarian” TNT film series starring Noah Wyle. The original series aired for four seasons, while there were three entries in the film series.
No premiere date for “The Next Chapter” has been set at the time of this publishing. As with the original series and films, the show centers on the people responsible for maintaining the mythical Library, which serves as a storehouse for powerful and dangerous artifacts.

Exclusive: TNT has greenlighted four-hour miniseries Debriefing the President (working title), about the 2003 interrogation of deposed Iraqi president Saddam Hussein, to air in 2025. This marks the cable network’s first original scripted order since the 2022 Warner Bros.-Discovery merger. The news comes two weeks after Wbd took a $9.1 billion write-down on its cable assets and a week after the company announced that Kathleen Finch will be retiring as chairman and CEO of U.S. Networks, with Channing Dungey, Warner Bros. Television Group Chairman and CEO, adding the linear networks to her purview.
TNT has no current original scripted shows after all remaining ones at the time of the merger have been canceled. The plan to bring back original scripted programming to the network had been put in motion by Finch, including the greenlight for Debriefing the President, which comes from independent production companies Ar Content and Big Dreams Entertainment.

George Clooney is reflecting on his career and revealed that he doesn’t want to work with David O. Russell again.
In a joint interview with Brad Pitt, the pair discussed “time allotment” and deciding who they want to spend time with while working.
“The older you get, time allotment is very different,” Clooney told GQ. “Five months out of your life is a lot.”
Russell is not someone Clooney would like to spend five months of his life filming with.
“And so it’s not just like, ‘Oh, I’m going to go do a really good film, like Three Kings, and I’m going to have a miserable f*** like David O Russell making my life hell. Making every person in the crew’s life hell,'” Clooney added. “It’s not worth it. Not at this point in my life. Just to have a good product.”

During the summer of 1984, parental outrage over the unexpected gore and graphic violence in “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” and “Gremlins” led to a ratings change by the Motion Picture Association of America. Encouraged by Steven Spielberg, director of “Temple of Doom” and producer of “Gremlins,” on July 1, 1984, the MPAA introduced the “PG-13” rating, indicating that “parents are strongly cautioned to give special guidance to children under 13.” A few weeks later, on August 10, 1984, “Red Dawn” became the first American film released with the new rating. Although it got mixed reviews upon its debut, it has become a cult classic both for featuring a group of young actors who went on to become some of the biggest stars of the decade, and for its themes that are reminders of the real fear Americans felt over the Cold War. Read on for more about the “Red Dawn” 40th anniversary.

After several turbulent weeks in politics, “The Daily Show’s” Jordan Klepper checked in with Pennsylvania Trump supporters, who told him the assassination attempt was a “planned job” by anyone and everyone — including former President Barack Obama.
In an exclusive video of “The Daily Show Presents: Jordan Klepper Fingers The Pulse” shared with TheWrap, Klepper steps into the field for the first time since the assassination attempt to chat with Trump supporters in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania — the site of the shooting — about the event and the state of the race.
When asking rally attendees about the shooting, Klepper was met with a number of conspiracy theories, with supporters telling him they believe it’s an “inside job” and a “planned job,” with one noting “a lot of things aren’t adding up — it’s very strange.”

Next time you wander into a movie theater and find yourself to be the subject of a comically catchy song near the climax of the film, just ask yourself: What would Brian Boitano do?
In the 1999 hit film South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, franchise creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone flexed their showtune-writing muscles in a display of musical might that wouldn’t be matched until they opened their Tony-winning Broadway debut The Book of Mormon over a decade later. From “Kyle’s Mom’s A Big Fat Bitch” to “Blame Canada” to, of course, “What Would Brian Boitano Do?” (parts I and II), the first South Park movie is absolutely loaded with all-time great earworms that left audiences humming along as they exited the theater.

On June 30 1999, Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s infamous creation, South Park, made its leap from Comedy Central to the silver screen with South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut. Possibly the fastest example of a TV series making the jump to film, South Park was greenlit right at the end of the first season, and production started during the second and third seasons. Bigger, Longer and Uncut would go on to fully highlight the sheer magnitude of Parker and Stone’s comedic and satirical strengths, working as a metatextual commentary on censorship and scapegoating while dealing with its own veritable censors at the MPAA.
But more notably, the South Park movie showed how much of a musical theater-loving nut Parker was by fully embedding singing-and-dancing flair in his and Stone’s first animated feature venture. (Remember that Parker’s directorial debut was the Troma-released horror comedy Cannibal! The Musical.)

It’s hard to believe that it’s been 25 years since South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut hit theaters and instantly became the greatest movie musical (that co-stars a dildo-wielding Saddam Hussein) ever made.
To commemorate the anniversary, a sing-a-long version of the R-rated cartoon was released in multiplexes this week. And shout out to the folks who had to put up with the muffled sounds of fans belting out “Uncle Fucka” while they were trying to watch Inside Out 2 with their children.
What’s truly remarkable about the movie, in retrospect, is that South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone originally intended for it to be a climactic end point for the show — a show that has now been on the air for 27 years. Which would explain why the film’s conclusion, including Kenny’s big face reveal, really does feel like an emotional goodbye to the world of South Park.

Undoubtedly, the Call of Duty (CoD) franchise is the crown jewel of the Fps franchise. Every year, Activsion gets a new developer, like Treyarch, and brings players a campaign to help tie together the franchises’ ever-expanding lore. It’s a known fact that every hero needs a good villain to fight, and over the past decade, the CoD franchise has had a variety of enemies.
From rogue soldiers to terrorists wanting to burn everything down, the antagonists of CoD games can be compared to action-movie villains. While we’ve seen some terrifying villains in the franchise, Activsion has completely dropped the ball by not bringing back one of the scariest forces we first fought in CoD World at War.

With the upcoming Call of Duty video game, players will finally get to see the inclusion of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and maybe the militant leader Osama Bin Laden. That’s one of the things for fans to get excited for; the other remains the return of iconic character Viktor Reznov, the hallucinatory friend of Alex Mason from the Black Ops series.
But it won’t be fun until he is again voiced by the veteran industry actor, Gary Oldman. The Darkest Hour actor voiced the character in the first two Black Ops games, but Piotr Michael, who also voiced Jason Hudson in Cold War, took the mantle in 2018 for Black Ops 4.

The Zombies story arc in Call of Duty has come a long way since it was first introduced in World at War in 2008. At the beginning, it was simply a horde of undead creatures coming in waves, and players were required to hold them off for as long as they could. It’s the same even now, but with a storyline like Aether and Dark Aether, it’s more gripping.
What’s more gripping is the wonder weapon initially introduced with the game mode, Ray Gun. Players would aim and shoot the zombies, dismembering them into smithereens in just one shot; splash damage was a perfect addition to it. But there was this exploit that players had fun with, making the development of the mode never to be forgotten.
