It’s game, set and match to Novak Djovokic. The Serbian tennis ace has received and “acknowledged” an apology from Australian broadcaster Channel Nine over comments made by its reporter, Toby Jones.
Djovokic had boycotted an on-court interview after his third-round victory at the Australian Open in Melbourne this week. This was after Jones had chanted, “Novak is overrated, Novak’s a has-been, Novak kick him out” to Serbian supporters during a live broadcast before the match against Jiri Lehacka.
Jones — who works for Nine, the tournament’s official broadcaster — was widely criticized by tennis professionals and social media commenters after his remarks went viral, and he has since apologized to Djovokic’s camp and the Serbian fans. “I considered it to be humour, which is consistent with most things I do,” he said. “Having said that, I was made aware on the Saturday morning from Tennis Australia that the...

Stephen King's stories possess several qualities that make them the masterpieces they are recognized as. As a consequence, the movies inspired by King's works are often no less groundbreaking, capturing the essence of his complex narratives. One of the most compelling features of these films is their well-crafted protagonists; characters whose struggles, strengths, and flaws resonate profoundly with the viewer.
From unlikely child heroes to tragic figures, the protagonists of Stephen King drive the emotional and thematic weight of his stories. Their personalities are never unidimensional. On the contrary, they are representative of the multifaceted nature of humanity, which can hardly be categorized into black or white boxes. Their experiences often reflect universal truths about fear, love, loss, friendship, and redemption, making them as unforgettable as the mesmerizing (and often chilling) settings they inhabit.

BBC’s Sherlock, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, proved to be a major hit among fans and critics, at least the first two seasons, as the quality of storytelling took a major nosedive in the following additions. Although various facets contributed to the show’s overall decline, including its uneven tone, it was the show’s biggest strength that led to its fall from grace.

On the bright side, Robert Downey Jr’s potential Sherlock Holmes 3 could avoid falling into a similar pit by focusing on another notable foe of the British detective.

This weekend, Apple TV+ is free.
It’s a brilliant marketing move and reminds us of the time when, back when Disney Channel was a premium cable channel, they would do special free weekends, complete with cutaways to a fake call center to see people signing up in real time.
And while there might not be hosted segments previewing the channel’s upcoming programs, you have free reign over all of Apple TV+ – including their original film library.
To that end, we chose nine movies that you should definitely check out during the free preview weekend, everything from documentaries about the Beastie Boys to new classics from Martin Scorsese and Ridley Scott to a movie about the formation of “Tetris” (yes really).
Apple “Beastie Boys Story”
Apple TV+ has a robust lineup of music documentaries, with Todd Haynes’ “The Velvet Underground,” plus docs dedicated to Billie Eilish, Bruce Springsteen, Louis Armstrong and Selena Gomez.

Anya Taylor-Joy had a big 2024 working with acclaimed directors, between her surprise cameo in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two, and her starring role in George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The actor indeed snagged the role of Imperator Furiosa in Miller’s newest action epic thanks to the recommendation of another big-name director, Edgar Wright, who cast her in his dreamy 2021 horror film Last Night in Soho.
Oscar-nominated director David O’Russell also dialed Taylor-Joy’s number, casting her in his 2022 all-star period film Amsterdam, as did M. Night Shyamalan, who put the actor in his Unbreakable sequels Split and Glass. But the first major filmmaker to recognize Taylor-Joy’s talents was Robert Eggers, whose 2015 psychological-horror movie The Witch proved to be the actor’s breakthrough. Taylor-Joy returned to the wild world of Eggers for 2022’s brutal revenge film The Northman.

James Mangold was “hurt” when ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’ was rejected by critics and moviegoers.Although the 2023 action-adventure film was Harrison Ford’s final outing as the daredevil archaeologist, audiences and critics alike were not impressed with the film - with the blockbuster receiving mostly lukewarm reviews and ending its box office run with a worldwide total of $384 million against a production budget of $294.7 million. Now, the 60-year-old director has admitted he was left upset that ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’ didn’t receive the love he felt it deserved as Indy's farewell.Speaking with Deadline, Mangold said: “It hurt in the sense that I really love Harrison and I wanted audiences to love him as he was and to accept that that’s part of what the movie has to say - that things come to an end, that’s part of life.”The...

Fantasy is a hard nut to crack. Where science fiction can build on the rust and chrome of worlds we know, fantasy asks us to envision something new, often helped along by tidbits of real world history (as many fans of George R.R. Martin know quite well). To bring these worlds to life on screen requires more magic than words on a page, making the special effects budget blow the king's purse wide open.
When it works, it's something special. We get to see impossible worlds, meet cultures and countries where the riddle of steel and the law of chivalry thrive. We take to skies full of dragons, and sandy deserts full of bandits. Of this grand niche, the sword and sorcery movie is the most approachable, with a down to earth ruffian flair. The distinction between this and high fantasy is slim, but for our purposes, if the world...

Exclusive: In a week that controversy surrounding Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story was generating headlines aplenty for Netflix, an old British show quietly slipped into the streamer’s UK top 10, neatly demonstrating something of a 2024 viewing trend.
The Toby Jones-starring drama series Capital premiered on the BBC in 2015 and yet here it was sitting sixth in Netflix’s most-watched list after being acquired by the streamer almost a decade later.
The show made a bit of a splash when it launched on the BBC years ago, but didn’t exactly go gangbusters. Yet in the past few weeks, the internet has been awash with article headlines such as “Netflix has just quietly added a forgotten BBC masterpiece” in relation to the rather parochial Capital, which starred Jones as one of the residents of a road in South London who starts receiving unsettling postcards.

The best spy movies of all time range from outlandishly hilarious to being extremely accurate, thanks to the input of a consultant. Though the espionage genre has developed into a niche of filmmaking that typically involves epic action blockbusters like James Bond or Mission: Impossible, there are also quieter, slow-burn additions to the filmography. While fight scenes and fun gadgets make for great props and feature dynamic set pieces, these aspects don't necessarily mean that a movie will stand the test of time. Many of these films are considered classics and have been in the spy thriller rotation for years.
There are war movies that experts have praised for accuracy, and the same can be said for espionage thrillers based on true events. However, historical accuracy isn't typically the metric that former officers, agents, and analysts use to judge these movies. Emotional truths, the appeals to pathos, and the larger...

Few spy films delve into the murky waters of human psychology and institutional intrigue as masterfully as Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Tomas Alfredson’s 2011 adaptation of John le Carré’s classic novel remains a towering achievement in the espionage genre, eschewing high-octane action for a meticulous, cerebral dissection of loyalty, betrayal, and the heavy toll of a life lived in shadows. This isn’t just a spy thriller—it’s a character-driven masterpiece that redefined the modern spy film.

Made on a budget of $30 million, the action thriller Atomic Blonde earned $100 million at the box office and was meant to launch a franchise, with screenwriter Kurt Johnstad saying he envisioned the story as a trilogy. But, seven years after Focus Features (a division of Universal Pictures) released the film, a sequel has still not made it into production – and during an interview with The Direct, director David Leitch revealed what the hold-up is: Atomic Blonde 2 has gotten caught up in rights issues.

A twist ending can make or break a movie, and they tend to generate a lot of conversation. While the best movie twists can change the complexion of a story in a single moment, they aren't easy to pull off. For every Fight Club and Planet of the Apes, there are dozens of movies which miss the mark. A bad plot twist can feel like a cheap gimmick that shatters the suspension of disbelief and insults the audience's intelligence.
Between the legendary and the ludicrous, there are many controversial plot twists which still inspire debate. These twists have as many fans as detractors. Since a movie's ending can often affect how people appreciate the entire story, these divisive twist endings are big sticking points in the discourse surrounding a certain movie. Those who love the twist will generally love the movie, while others might feel as though the twist ruins everything.

Steve Rogers is the most famous super soldier in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but there are many other characters who were injected with the infamous Super Soldier Serum. Developed by Abraham Erskine, the serum completely changed history and became a target for several individuals and governments. Several known superheros and villains across the MCU movies owe their power to Erskine's serum, though his imitators never quite got the formula quite as right.
The success of Abraham Erskine's Super Soldier Serum did bring about copycats and other attempts at creating super soldiers. Extremis and Calvin Zabo's formula are just a few power-granting serums that tried to replicate Erskine's but did not directly borrow from his science. Bruce Banner did come close to replicating it but added gamma radiation to the mix, leading him to become the Hulk. However, Erskine's Super Soldier Serum is responsible for the creation of some of the...

Dark Matter's renewal is exciting, but it also means season 2 of the multiverse show could follow a similar trajectory that doomed another adaption of a book by the same writer. Blake Crouch is a renowned sci-fi author, and while only two shows have been created from his literary works so far, there is far more potential to come from his impressive back catalog. Although changes were made to 2016's Dark Matter book for season 1, the overall story remained the same in Apple TV+'s version. However, Dark Matter season 2's confirmation calls for a very different production process.
Joel Edgerton led the cast of Dark Matter season 1 as Jason Dessen. Although the inaugural run of episodes ends with the possibility of Edgerton's return in season 2, the story's continuation would also largely make sense without his presence. Dark Matter season 1's ending implies the focus will shift to other characters.

13 years since Captain America: The First Avenger, a minor villain could return after a hidden detail from the MCU Phase 1 movie has been uncovered. Captain America: The First Avenger marked the debut of Chris Evans' titular super-soldier, Steve Rogers, and pitted him against one of his most notable villains from Marvel Comics, the Red Skull. Hugo Weaving's Johann Schmidt wasn't the only threat in The First Avenger, however, as the movie also introduced Toby Jones as the sinister and scheming Arnim Zola.
Arnim Zola has been a recurring adversary to Steve Rogers, and a number of other notable heroes, since his Marvel Comics debut in 1977's Captain America and the Falcon #208. In Captain America: The First Avenger, Zola was a biochemist working for the Nazi Party and Hydra, helping the Red Skull by transforming energy from the Tesseract into weapons. Despite working under the thumb of the more haunting villain,...

Exclusive: Filming has wrapped in Wales on Mr. Burton, the upcoming biopic about the man who inspired screen legend Richard Burton.
Independent Entertainment has sold UK and Ireland rights to Icon Film Distribution, which will release the film theatrically in 2025 to coincide with the centenary of Burton’s birth.
As we first revealed, the film will tell the true story of the relationship between Welsh schoolmaster Philip Burton and a wild young schoolboy called Richard Jenkins. The latter dreamed of becoming an actor, but his ambitions were in danger of being derailed by a combination of family trouble, the pressure of war, and his own lack of discipline. Mr. Burton recognized the raw talent in his pupil, and made it his mission to fight for him, becoming his tutor, strict taskmaster and eventually his adoptive father. Exclusive: Cake has completed the acquisition of assets from rival Jetpack Distribution in a move that doubles the size of its library and reduces the kids TV sales field by one.
The agreement, financial terms of which were not disclosed, comes after Cake announced a deal to buy a significant number of Jetpack’s assets last month. We understand talks had been ongoing for several weeks prior to that.
Jetpack, a well-respected indie distributor, had had been hit by the tough kids TV marketplace, but its founder, Dominic Gardiner, and Cake Group CEO Ed Galton pointed to their close personal relationship as reasoning behind today’s deal. According to Companies House, Jetpack liquidated on August 21, but a deal for the assets such as Dennis & Gnasher Unleashed had been announced two weeks prior.

Starring Martin Freeman, Flavia De Luce will begin production in the UK in October. More on the film below.
Martin Freeman, Jonathan Pryce and Toby Jones are all set to star in Bharat Nalluri’s Flavia De Luce. Based on a series of novels by Alan Bradley, the upcoming film will follow the titular 11-year-old amateur detective and master poisoner as she investigates a murder her father is accused of.
Kftv reports that the film is set to shoot in the Reading/Guildford area this October. The entire film will be shot on location, too, making it a nice change of pace from this summer’s CGI-heavy offerings.
Susan Coyne has adapted the first of 10 Flavia De Luce novels for the film and Protagonist Pictures took their film to Cannes earlier this year to introduce the film to buyers. We hope that went well.

Twin Peaks reshaped TV with its surreal horror and soap opera elements, influencing many shows like True Detective and Dark. Twin Peaks' atmospheric menace in a small-town setting and the central question of who killed Laura Palmer are uniquely haunting. Led by Kyle MacLachlan, Twin Peaks spawned imitations and homages, making it an incredibly important cult classic.
It's impossible to name every single horror movie or TV show inspired by Twin Peaks. Without a doubt, David Lynch and Mark Frost's mystery drama reshaped television and visual storytelling when the series premiered in 1990. Packed with surreal, horror, and soap opera elements, Twin Peaks has an incredibly distinct feel. The atmospheric menace that permeates the show's small-town setting is uniquely haunting, as is the cosmic nature of Twin Peaks' central question: Who killed Laura Palmer? Led by Kyle MacLachlan's Dale Cooper, Twin Peaks is a singular series, but it also spawned many imitations and homages.

It’s funny how an old TV catchphrase will just magically pop into your brain. While watching this new comedy action caper I recalled George Peppard as Hannibal Smith, leader of the NBC 80s ratings juggernaut, “The A-Team”. With a big cigar clenched between his pearly whites, he’d grin and exclaim, “I love it when a plan comes together” as the bad guys’ vehicles would flip over (though there had to be a shot of them climbing out of the windows unscathed for the censors). Well, the two main characters of this film might say, “I hate it when a plan falls apart”. And it does spectacularly for these luckless schmoes, actually played by members of the “Ocean’s Crew” (the 2000s reboot). And though they spend most of the story’s runtime trying to escape and survive, the title ironically labels them The Instigators.

After a one-week theatrical window, Doug Liman’s recent reteaming with “Bourne Identity” collaborator Matt Damon, “The Instigators,” which was also co-written by and co-stars Casey Affleck, is set to debut on Apple TV+ this Friday, August 9. In addition to Damon and Affleck, the film also features performances from Hong Chau, Michael Stuhlbarg, Alfred Molina, Ving Rhames, Jack Harlow, Ron Perlman, Toby Jones, and Paul Walter Hauser, a cast that will no doubt earn at least a few streams despite middling to negative reviews, including IndieWire’s, which calls the film, “Flimsy in most respects but fun enough in its fumbling.”
No matter what you think of “The Instigators,” it is obvious the intention behind the film is to tell a heist story more focused on human flaw than it is on claiming any riches. Simply put, if you’re coming in expecting “Heat” or “Ocean’s 11,” expect to be disappointed.

There’s some undeniable wisdom in that Mark Twain quote about writing what you know, and that’s likely the reason why some of the best films of all time are about filmmaking itself. This also applies to the horror genre, as we can see from beloved classics like Wes Craven’s New Nightmare and even The Blair Witch Project.
And in honor of recent meta horror flicks like MaXXXine and The Exorcism (not to be confused with The Pope’s Exorcist), we’ve decided to come up with a list celebrating 6 underrated Hollywood Horror Films that explore the dark side of show business.
For the purposes of this list, we’ll be defining ‘Hollywood Horror’ as scary movies where filmmaking itself is a source of scares. That being said, we’ll be avoiding Found Footage movies since most of them are already exercises in meta storytelling.
With that out of the way,...

Director Doug Liman changed the ending of The Instigators, pushing for bigger stakes and more action to elevate the intensity. Casey Affleck trusted Liman's vision, following significant script rewrites, and noted how the new direction improved the third act. Reviews for The Instigators have been mixed, citing a lack of excitement, but praising the chemistry between Affleck and Damon.
Casey Affleck explains how The Instigators director Doug Liman improved the ending, saying he "completely pulled it apart." Directed by Liman, with a script co-written by Affleck and Chuck Maclean, the Boston-set heist comedy follows two thieves who go on the run after a botched robbery and drag one of their therapists along with them for the ride. Matt Damon and Affleck lead the star-studded alongside Oscar nominee Hong Chau (The Whale) as the therapist and Paul Walter Hauser, Michael Stuhlbarg, Ving Rhames, Alfred Molina, Toby Jones, Jack Harlow, and Ron Perlman.
