‘Wicked: Part I’ recently released to glowing reviews and phenomenal box office success. It’s based on the stage musical ‘Wicked,’ which is inspired by Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel, itself a reimagining of L. Frank Baum’s ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.’

The film follows Elphaba, who will become the Wicked Witch of the West, and her friendship with Galinda, who will become Glinda the Good, set in the Land of Oz before Dorothy arrives.

The main cast of ‘Wicked: Part I’ includes Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West, and Ariana Grande as Galinda, who becomes Glinda the Good. Supporting roles feature Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Ethan Slater as Boq, Bowen Yang as Pfannee, and Peter Dinklage as the voice of Dr. Dillamond. Other notable cast members include Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard, and Marissa Bode as Nessarose, Elphaba’s sister.

"Star Wars: Skeleton Crew" episode 1 begins with an unfortunate space pirate raid, but soon moves away from the action. The majority of the episode is spent introducing the central quartet of youngsters and the secluded world they live in, only sending them into hyperspace at the very end. 

Episode 2, on the other hand, fills the kids' and the viewers' eyes and ears with the wonders and horrors of the galaxy. it focuses on Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers), Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), Kb (Kyriana Kratter), and Neel (Robert Timothy Smith) adjusting to their new situation, meeting new characters, and exploring new places. From the mysterious Onyx Cinder spaceship and its irritable droid first mate Sm-33 (voiced by Nick Frost) to the sordid space station they all end up on, the main characters get to experience new corners of the "Star Wars" galaxy along with the viewer.

Popeye The Slayer Man: "Popeye the Slayer Man, a new horror feature exploring an alternate backstory for the legendary sailor, will be coming early 2025. The first trailer, stills, and teaser art have been released.

The film concerns a group of friends who sneak into an abandoned spinach canning factory to film a documentary on the legend of the “Sailor Man,” who is said to haunt the factory and local docks.

“We can’t wait for audiences to get a load of this gory and scary version of Popeye,” says producer Jeff Miller. “We went old-school and focused on using real practical effects, and not relying on CG for the gore. We’re talking with very enthusiastic and interested buyers now.”

Popeye the Slayer Man stars Sean Michael Conway, Elena Juliano, Mabel Thomas, Marie-Louise Boisnier, Jeff Thomas, and Steven McCormack, along with “scream queens” Angela Relucio and Sarah Nicklin. Jason Stephens plays the title role.

“Sugarcane” earned a leading five nominations, followed by “Soundtrack to Coup d’Etat” with four for the 40th annual International Documentary Association (IDA) Awards. These Oscar precursors will be celebrated in a ceremony on Dec. 5 at the Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles. See the full list of nominees below.

Among this year’s IDA nominees for Best Feature, only “Sugarcane” was also nominated for the top prize by the Critics Choice Documentary Awards. Nominees in Best Documentary Feature and Best Documentary Short categories have been selected from the shortlists previously announced. IDA members will have access to view each of the nominated films and can begin voting on November 19, 2024.

IDA has been an inconsistent, but important precursor for the Oscars. Last year, only one of the IDA top 10 went on to contend for Best Documentary Feature: “Bobi Wine: The People’s President” lost that Oscar race to “20 Days in Mariupol.

“Sugarcane,” the documentary about the mistreatment of Indigenous children in Canada, has received the most nominations at yet another awards show for nonfiction features, picking up five noms to lead the field at the International Documentary Association’s IDA Documentary Awards.

In nominations announced on Tuesday, the film by Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie was nominated in the Best Feature Documentary category, as well as for its directing, cinematography, editing and musical score. It had previously led in nominations at the Cinema Eye Honors and Critics Choice Documentary Awards as well.

“Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat” received four nominations, while “Black Box Diaries” and “Queendom” each received three.

In the Best Feature Documentary category, those four films were nominated alongside “Agent of Happiness,” “Dahomey,” “Ernest Cole: Lost and Found,” “No Other Land,” “Seeking Mavis Beacon” and “The Remarkable Life of Ibelin.”

Netflix’s “Avatar: The Last Airbender” live-action series has added eight actors to the cast of Season 2, Variety has learned exclusively.

The new cast members are: Chin Han, Hoa Xuande, Justin Chien, Amanda Zhou, Crystal Yu, Kelemete Misipeka, Lourdes Faberes, and Rekha Sharma.

Han will play Long Feng, who was the leader of Ba Sing Se secret police, the Dai Li, in the animated Nickelodeon series. Xuande will play Professor Zei, head of the anthropology department at Ba Sing Se University in the original series who was obsessed with finding Wan Shi Tong’s Library.

Chien will play King Kuei, ruler of the Earth Kingdom. Zhou will play Joo Dee, a public servant and guide for important visitors in Ba Sing Se. Yu will play Lady Beifong, Toph’s mother. “Night of the Apocalypse,” directed by Ricardo Curtis and Rodrigo Perez-Castro, is a project that brings together artists from France, Canada, and Belgium. The movie uses a new method of independent animation: creative problem-solving and collaboration with people from other countries.

According to Curtis, they wanted to make something new. The movie was made by House of Cool and Copperheart Pictures, two companies in Toronto that work well together because they have different skills. House of Cool brought a lot of animation knowledge from working on big-budget movies, and Copperheart brought new ideas and energy to the project.

Netflix’s live-action “Avatar: The Last Airbender” is back in production for Season 2, with the streamer revealing that Miya Cech has been cast as the fan-favorite character Toph.

In a clip released as part of Netflix’s annual Geeked Week fan event, Toph’s feet are seen in closeup before she stomps down and demonstrates her earthbending.

The 17-year-old Cech is likely best known to audiences as the younger version of Ali Wong’s character in the Netflix romantic comedy “Always Be My Maybe,” released in 2019. Funnily enough, she also played a younger version of Ali Wong’s character in an episode of the Netflix series “Beef.” She also starred in Nickelodeon’s short-lived series “The Astronauts” and had a supporting role in last year’s coming-of-age comedy “You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah.”

Toph was first introduced in Book 2 of the original “Last Airbender” animated series.

Avatar: The Last Airbender season two is officially in production. Netflix announced the news with a teaser video, and revealed the actress cast in the highly anticipated role of earthbender Toph.

First released in February, Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Nickelodeon’s beloved animated series was renewed for two more seasons in March.

The first conversation Paul Sun-Hyung Lee had with The Mandalorian showrunners Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni did not divulge much information except for a significant detail about his character's home planet.

That is up from 26 percent recorded in 2023, its Digital Consumer Trends 2024 survey of 4,150 U.K. adults aged 16-75 found.

“Just over a third (36 percent) of generative AI users use it once a week or daily. This is equivalent to 13 percent of all people in the U.K.,” the firm highlighted in the report. “Four percent of all people in the U.K. claim to use generative AI daily (versus 3 percent in 2023). Two in five (41 percent) of generative AI users are extremely infrequent users, at less often than once per month.”

The Gotham Film & Media Institute announced today the nominations in seven competitive award categories for its inaugural Gotham TV Awards, recognizing a range of series, including Baby Reindeer, Ripley, The Curse, Shōgun, Bodkin, Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Black Twitter: A People’s History as well as performances from Emma Stone and Nathan Fielder in The Curse, Andrew Scott in Ripley, Kristen Wiig in Palm Royale, Richard Gadd in Baby Reindeer, and Lily Gladstone in Under The Bridge, among others. The awards ceremony is set for June 4 in NYC.

Season 3 of The Summer I Turned Pretty will debut in summer 2025, creator Jenny Han announced during Amazon’s Upfront presentation on Tuesday. While not many details on the third installment were given, Han did also reveal that Season 3 will be expanded to consist of 11 episodes.

Season 2 consisted of eight episodes, while Season 1 boasted just seven episodes.

Production on Season 3 is currently underway. Series stars Lola Tung, Christopher Briney, and Gavin Casalegno joined Han on stage Tuesday to share a bit about how filming is going.

“I’m really excited to see what comes next for all of us in the show itself, especially for Jeremiah and Belly’s final moments in Season 2,” Casalegno said.

Amazon, during its upfront presentation Tuesday in New York, revealed that the third season of its popular take on Jenny Han’s beloved young adult book trilogy will not air until 2025.

Additionally, Amazon revealed that the third season — formally announced last August — will consist of 11 episodes. That’s up from the previously announced 10 and a high for the show after seasons one and two featured seven and eight installments, respectively.

Season three of Summer was greenlit ahead of both the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes last year. Production on the new season was delayed until late last year, after both the writers and performers strikes were resolved and the reason for the show’s delayed return. On February 22, 2024, the long-awaited live-action adaptation of the popular Avatar: The Last Airbender series finally premiered with the eight-episode first season. The series adapted the initial stories of the popular animated series. Regardless of the final result, most fans were actually eager to see what Netflix has done with the series. While there have been some lukewarm comments, the series was an overall success for Netflix, which resulted in a renewal for Seasons 2 and 3, which are currently being written to be produced at a later date; no release dates have been given as of the time of writing.

The original animated series’ seasons consisted of twenty 20-minute episodes, so you can imagine how there was a lot more space to explore and evolve the story. Netflix’s live-action adaptation had “only” eight 1-hour episodes, which is significantly less time to evolve the story, so some cuts had to be made...

Fans were extremely excited ahead of the live-action series' release, especially since everything about the project looked so accurate to the original series.
