Heinz Lewin was born 22 March, 1888 in Wiesbaden, Germany. The seizure of power by the Nazis in 1933 forced the Jewish composer to change his name to Heinz Letton, then to flee, first to Prague, Czechoslovakia, then London, England. Finally he settled in France. There, Letton was arrested in 1939 as an enemy alien. Deported to Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland, he was murdered shortly after arriving in 1942.
