The opening of this new Prime Video series courtesy of Dick Wolf kicks things off with a bang. Officer Maria Delgado (Monica Raymund of Chicago Fire) is making a routine traffic stop only to get a bullet in the neck from a gangbanger.

With the entire Wilshire Boulevard section of the LAPD equally mourning and wanting payback, veteran patrolwoman Traci Harmon (Troian Bellisario) is hard-hit as she was Delgado’s training officer. That haunts her as she’s now assigned rookie cop Alex Diaz (Brandon Larracuente).

At first, the show looks like the same material we’ve seen in scores of series', especially The Rookie. That includes Harmon clashing with old-school Sgt. Lasman (Eriq Lasalle), whose methods aren’t what she wants to teach Diaz.

There is a new TV show coming to Prime Video in January and it has a familiar face and a brilliant creator behind the series. On Call sees former When Calls the Heart star Lori Loughlin make her return to television. It is also a show from Law & Order and Chicago One creator Dick Wolf.

On Call Brings Lori Loughlin Back To Television

Most fans know Lori Loughlin from her roles as Aunt Becky on Full House and Abigail Stanton in When Calls the Heart. She also was a major actress in Hallmark movies for years. However, her career hit a roadblock when she was convicted in the College Admissions Scandal and had to spend time in prison.

“On Call” is a decent small-scale police procedural. But is it decent enough when it comes from the house of Dick Wolf?

The pedigreed eight-part show traded broadcast networks for Prime Video, where it will premiere Thursday. The novelty is that each episode is a bite-sized 30 minutes, with modest character arcs that extend over multiple episodes, and multiple seemingly random crime sequences that propel individual installments.

The result feels like “Cops” with a script. The ride-along series puts the audience largely behind the wheel with Traci Harmon. She’s a divorced surfer with a chip on her shoulder, a junkie sister and a troubled relationship with her fellows on the force. She’s wound as tight as her bun.

Riding shotgun is her trainee, the handsome newbie Alex Diaz (Brandon Larracuente). The young idealist is eager for the challenge, but he keeps leaping into the danger zone, ignoring the sage...

On Call not only thrives on realism with its grounded portrayal of police procedures but also on the strength of its strong cast of characters. Reminiscent of gripping cop dramas like David Ayer's End of Watch, Prime Video's On Call has been created by Tim Walsh and Elliot Wolf. The two showrunners put their experience working on legal thriller shows, like Chicago P.D. and Law & Order: Criminal Justice System, on full display by diving deep into the day-to-day snags and challenges faced by two police officers, Traci Harmon and Alex Diaz.

When Hope Calls season 2 gets a narrow release date. A spinoff of Hallmark Channel's When Calls the Heart, and based on the books by Janette Oke, the drama premiered in August 2019. The story follows a pair of sisters, Lillian Walsh (Morgan Kohan) and Grace Bennett (Jocelyn Hudon), in the town of Brookfield back in 1916. The cast also includes Ryan-James Hatanaka, Greg Hovanessian, Wendy Crewson, Marshall Williams, Hanneke Talbot, Neil Crone, and Full House alum Lori Loughlin. Although the adaptation was renewed back in December 2021, it's been a long wait to get to audiences.

TVLine was asked about when the spinoff might return. Although the outlet did not have an exact release window set, it was mentioned that When Hope Calls season 2 is expected to premiere on Great American Family in Q2 of 2025, which would narrow the release month to either April, May, or June. Earlier reports mentioned a January release date.

Eriq La Salle would like to gently remind his fans that he never actually went anywhere.

Though he hasn’t done regular series television since hanging up his scrubs as Dr. Peter Benton in 2009, La Salle for the last 17 years has been firmly embedded in the “Wolf camp” — the nickname for Dick Wolf’s vast empire of cop, fire and medical shows. Ever since he made his episodic TV directing debut on Special Victims Unit in 2007, La Salle has played a behind-the-scenes role in Wolf’s primetime lineup, from serving as an executive producer on Chicago Pd to directing multiple episodes of Chicago Justice, Chicago Med, Law & Order, L&o Organized Crime and FBI.

“It’s a camp that is a bit of a meritocracy where if you prove yourself, they give you a lot of respect and support and allow you to grow within the company,” La Salle tells Deadline.

All eight episodes of the adrenaline-pumping series drop Thursday, Jan. 9 on Prime Video.

In this new series, the actress portrays Lieutenant Bishop, a stoic, hardened police officer who has seen more than she will ever share. To prepare for this role, Loughlin went on police ride-alongs.

Following her and husband Mossimo Giannulli‘s 2019 indictment in the Operation Varsity Blues college admissions bribery scandal, the Emmy nominee explained that her role as Lt. Bishop on the Prime Video procedural series On Call required her to go on police ride-alongs for research.

“It was really exciting and gave me a whole new appreciation for law enforcement,” she told Entertainment Tonight of the Wolf Entertainment and Universal Television series.

Premiering Jan. 9 on the streamer, On Call stars Troian Bellisario and Brandon Larracuente as a veteran officer and rookie duo who patrol the streets of Long Beach, California, with Loughlin as their blunt lieutenant.

Loughlin said she “jumped at the chance” to do the show from executive producer Dick Wolf and creators Elliot Wolf and Tim Walsh. “I was so excited,” she raved.
