Initially written off as just another unnecessary spin-off for an ancillary character from a spin-off from the main film series, "Andor" has instead emerged as one of the most exciting, viscerally thrilling, politically charged additions to the "Star Wars" universe since, well, the very first film. With Tony Gilroy at the helm, the series features an array of new characters, masterful pacing, and a dark oppressive feel that hangs over every episode.
"Andor" has constantly hopped between genres, from a heist film to a prison escape to a rebel uprising. It's been described by some as "Les Misérables in space," not something you would expect from the studio that brought you the often frustratingly simple "Obi-Wan Kenobi" and "The Book of Boba Fett."
As well as a strong, nuanced turn from Diego Luna at its center, the series features beautifully observed performances from an incredible cast that includes Fiona Shaw,...

There will be spoilers for "Andor" Episode Xii - "Rix Road"
"Andor" closes its first season strong with "Rix Road," the twelfth episode from Tony Gilroy and team, building on the framework of the funeral for Maarva (Fiona Shaw). Just about everyone heads to Ferrix, either returning or coming for the first time, to fulfill their own goals and ends. Dedra Meero (Denise Gough) heads to Ferrix to capture Cassian in a bid to learn the identity of Axis — the man in charge of the rebel activity she hopes to quash. Vel Sartha (Faye Marsay) and Luthen Rael (Stellan Skarsgård) join Sinta (Varada Sethu) on Ferrix so they can kill Cassian Andor to prevent the Empire from getting any more information about the nascent rebellion. Syril Karn (Kyle Soller) and Sergeant Mosk (Alex Ferns) head to the funeral in the hopes of bringing Cassian to Justice.

This post contains spoilers for "Andor" episode 11.
When it was first revealed that 2015's long-awaited "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" would center on a "not the Galactic Empire" in the form of the First Order, it was hard not to roll one's eyes at the idea. That feeling only intensified when it came to light that the First Order would have its own Death Star-style superweapon in the form of Starkiller Base. Was this really the best premise the movie's creatives could come up with? The Empire all over again, only bigger and more extreme? As though the generation of civilians who grew up hearing stories about Emperor Palpatine's terrible regime would somehow get it in their heads that the real problem with the Empire was that it didn't go far enough. Talk about hack writing, eh?
"Lord, what fools these mortals be," as Puck puts it in William Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream.

This post contains spoilers for the latest episode of "Andor."
If "Andor" has proven anything, it's that nothing is easy in the age of the Empire, least of all love. After the Aldhani heist in episode six triggered a galaxy-wide Imperial crackdown, it doesn't seem like any of our heroes will be getting happy endings any time soon. The series' seventh episode alone suggests trouble for Vel Sartha (Faye Marsay) and Cinta Kaz (Varada Sethu) — who are definitely sweethearts, fight me on it — and even checks back in on Mon Monthma's (Genevieve O'Reilly) icy marriage on Coruscant. While I'd be lying if I said I wasn't incredibly interested in the drama brewing between her drip of a hubby, Perrin (Alastair Mackenzie) and new player Tay Kolma (Ben Miles), "Andor" is finally offering some context to the relationship between Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) and Bix Caleen (Adria Arjona).

Created by Chris Lang, ITV’s Unforgotten pairs Nicola Walker’s Dci Cassie Stuart with Sanjeev Bhaskar’s Di Sunil Khan. Along with their team, those two investigate decades-old murder cases, piecing together events that transpired many years ago to deliver justice and closure to the victim and their relatives.
Series one saw the duo called to investigate the remains of a man long-buried under the foundations of a London home, while series two began with the discovery of a skeleton dredged up from the River Lea. Series three was the distressing story of a missing teenager whose body was discovered under the central reservation of a motorway.
Series four, which starts with the discovery of a body stored for decades in a domestic freezer, will star New Tricks’ Sheila Hancock, Killing Eve’s Susan Lynch, Wanderlust’s Andy Nyman and more. See below for the full cast and plot details.

For two filmmakers who have, for much of their careers, been bracketed as twin bastions of British social realism, Mike Leigh and Ken Loach have never had much in common. Where Loach has long worn his liberal activist’s heart on his sleeve, Leigh tends to tuck his politics into the folds of his movies, national crises of class tension and inequality needling through intimate domestic scenarios. So it’s chief among several surprises in “Peterloo,” Leigh’s vast, many-headed, boomingly angry historical epic, that it plays almost as his version of a Loach film. Strenuously detailing the many small orders of business that led to Manchester’s devastating 1819 Peterloo Massacre, which saw the British Tory government ordering a brutal military charge into a working-class crowd of peaceful pro-democracy protesters, it’s a stately, explicitly rhetorical paean to the people — setting the past in stone while also lashing out at a present-day political order.

Two years ago, director David Mackenzie got a career best performance out of Chris Pine in the Oscar nominated Hell or High Water. Easily the best film of that year, it was a total surprise, in the best way possible. The filmmaker and the actor had never hit those levels before, making the thought of a second collaboration rather tantalizing. Well, it has happened. Yesterday, a Trailer dropped for Outlaw King, the newest film from Mackenzie, with Pine in the juicy lead role. It’s one of the big Netflix releases for 2018, even getting a theatrical release. You can see the first real look at the flick below, but first, as always…some discussion. This film is a biographical drama with some big action moments, at least judging by what we’ve seen so far. IMDb lists the plot as such: “A true David v Goliath story of how the...

We've got a new photo to share with you today of Chris Pine as Robert The Bruce in the upcoming Scottish war movie Outlaw King. The film comes from Hell or High Water director David Mackenzie and it's period epic that will tell the true story of the Scottish king, Robert The Bruce, who led his country to freedom from English rule in the early 14th century. The story is set during the brutal period between 1298 to 1306 when Scotland was at the knees of King Edward I of England.
I'm excited to see this film. Braveheart is one of my favorite movies of all time and Outlaw King seems to interweave with that story. Pine also looks great in the role. When talking about the film, producer Gillian Barrie tells EW:
"Robert sacrificed everything he once owned to set Scotland free. He was the second richest person in the British Isles.

With a premise which could rival some of the most thought-provoking episodes of Black Mirror, Adina Istrate’s short film Eternally Happy is a fantastically put together production which explores the relationship between memory and its part in making us who we are. Set in a near-future, the film manages to brilliantly depict a world in which a drug has been designed to help stop a devastating suicide epidemic from decimating the population.
Alastair Mackenzie (Wolf Hall, Borgen) is Dr. Louis W, a neuroscientist who is on the brink of an unprecedented medical breakthrough. Having developed the ability to travel deep into the mind, the doctor hopes to reconnect the broken memories of his patients in order to help them cope with the heartbreak of losing their loved ones. From the offset, lines between reality and fiction are deliberately blurred which in turn adds a great deal of intrigue to the proceedings.

Laura Fraser stars as local police officer Annie Redford who finds herself dealing with her first murder case after a local music teacher is found dead at the foot of Carn Mohr mountain with ligature wounds on his wrists and a rather large head injury. Elsewhere, a prank involving offal masquerading as the dead remains of Nessie leads to the discovery a human heart among the remains. Ron Moody in Mel Brooks' 'The Twelve Chairs.' The 'Doctor Who' that never was. Ron Moody: 'Doctor Who' was biggest professional regret (See previous post: "Ron Moody: From Charles Dickens to Walt Disney – But No Harry Potter.") Ron Moody was featured in about 50 television productions, both in the U.K. and the U.S., from the late 1950s to 2012. These included guest roles in the series The Avengers, Gunsmoke, Starsky and Hutch, Hart to Hart, and Murder She Wrote, in addition to leads in the short-lived U.S. sitcom Nobody's Perfect (1980), starring Moody as a Scotland Yard detective transferred to the San Francisco Police Department, and in the British fantasy Into the Labyrinth (1981), with Moody as the noble sorcerer Rothgo. Throughout the decades, he could also be spotted in several TV movies, among them:[1] David Copperfield (1969). Hold me. Thrill me. Kiss me. Kill me. The films of David Mackenzie envision life as a never-ending whirlwind of experience, a cyclone of emotion constantly spinning out of control. These feelings are heightened and externalized through melodrama, yet they can also simmer under the surface like hidden secrets waiting to explode. While his exhausted characters never fit into one social class – pop stars, artisan chefs and thuggish bruisers all take center stage – each sees the world in a similarly warped way. They are confused by inadequacy, defined by repression, purposefully solitary, and bordering on self-destruction. But most importantly they are also eager to transcend this unhappiness, especially after finding inspiration in another equally tormented individual. One must simply desire the opportunity to grow, to live, to survive.

Of all the absurd romantic comedy setups, two clashing rock stars being handcuffed together at a music festival is pretty random. Morello (Natalia Tena) and her fellow punk girl rockers out of nowhere antagonize Adam (Luke Treadaway) and his electropop rocker buddy Tyko (Mathew Baynton) before the two have even had a chance to get out of their car. A crazy preacher (Joseph Mydell) shows up to calm down these angry young people, but when Adam refuses to say he’s sorry, the preacher handcuffs him to Morello and disposes of the key.
All of this occurs in the first five minutes of the film, before any sort of characters have been truly established—or even the setting established. The two are, of course, unable to find anyway to break the handcuffs and thus spend 24 hours together, performing on stage and hanging out with their significant others. Adam is dating...

Title: Tonight, You’re Mine Director: David Mackenzie Cast: Luke Treadaway, Natalia Tena, Mathew Baynton, Alastair Mackenzie, Kari Corbett, Sophie Wu and Al Green (Yes, That Al Green) It feels reductive to look down upon romantic comedies. Some say, they’re formulaic, conventional and are overly saccharin. The same can be said of any genre and any bad movie. As put, a bad movie is a bad movie, and by the same token, a good movie is a good movie. “Tonight, You’re Mine” is a good movie. David Mackenzie’s rom-com, You Instead, was shot in just five days. Here’s Carley’s review of a film that doesn’t quite overcome its low-budget status…
We’ve just come to the end of another great British summer, filled with barbecues, long walks on the beach, and sun-drenched music festivals. No, scratch that – it was filled with rain, disappointment and muddy music festivals. But in spite of the horrible weather, the music festival has become a British obsession, with hundreds sprouting up over the summer. These range from big ones, such as Reading and V, to smaller ones, like the Ben & Jerry’s Sundae Festival (free ice cream – yum).
It was probably only a matter of time, then, before one of these became the setting for a romantic comedy, which is exactly what you get with director David Mackenzie’s You Instead, filmed on location at 2010’s T in the Park in Scotland.

New poster for David Mackenzie's Perfect Sense, starring Ewan McGregor, Eva Green and Connie Nielsen We've been asked to remove the third poster has been added to the gallery for the IFC Films release which was first seen at this year's Sundance Film Festival. Apparently, this was leaked to our source. As such, we offer you a look at the other two posters. Maybe we'll get this back at some point, but there won't be another article about it. David Mackenzie directs the intriguing romantic drama script by Kim Fupz Aakeson, which tells of a chef and a scientist who fall in love as an epidemic starts robbing people of their sensory perceptions. Also in the cast of Perfect Sense are Stephen Dillane, Ewen Bremner, Denis Lawson and Alastair Mackenzie. Mackenzie is known for such films as 2003's Young Adam, which also starred Ewan McGregor, 2005's Asylum and and...

Director: David Mackenzie Writer: Thomas Leveritt Starring: Luke Treadaway, Natalia Tena, Mathew Baynton, Alastair Mackenzie, Ruta Gedmintas You Instead begins as Adam (Luke Treadaway) and Tyko (Mathew Baynton) -- known collectively as the electro pop duo The Make -- play a live radio acoustic set from the cramped backseat of a car that may as well been borrowed from Mr. Bean. Adam croons “I don’t want that, I want you instead” (from The Make's titular track) as the tiny car cruises slowly down a dusty road somewhere within Scotland's inconic T in the Park music festival. Their forward progress is halted by the Dirty Pinks. Morello (Natalia Tena) -- lead singer of the Dirty Pinks -- nicks Adam's guitar; Adam steals a family heirloom from Morello; suddenly, their lives are quite literally interconnected. Morello and Adam's personalities and lifestyles are as polar opposite as their music. Adam, whose The...

David Mackenzie’s latest directorial effort, You Instead, captures the effervescence and madness of one of the world’s biggest music festivals, refracted back through the lens of one whirlwind anti-romance. Bumping heads almost immediately, it doesn’t look as if Adam (Luke Treadaway) and Morello (Natalia Tena) have much in common. Adam is a big-time American pop rock star who dates a soulless female model, Morello is a struggling mid-level UK rock chick that dates a banker. But Adam and Morello both believe in the power of music and its ability to connect people, so it’s no surprise that the two are going to end up bonding intensely through their fundamentally wacky adventure. The warring bandleaders find themselves handcuffed to each other thanks to a musical prophet who binds them together,...

#39. Perfect Sense - David MacKenzie It used to go by another title, it looked pegged for a 2010 release, so there are big question marks with Perfect Sense. Logically a double dip in Sundance and Berlin would occur, but that depends on where David MacKenzie is at with his current project, In the Park. MacKenzie was actually in Park City in 2009 with Spread - the Ashton Kutcher sex dramedy. Will Sundance play host to a romantic drama featuring Ewan McGregor, Eva Green, Connie Nielsen, Ewen Bremner, Stephen Dillane and Alastair Mackenzie? If so, we can expect a Premieres category announcement. Scripted by Kim Fupz Aakeson, formerly titled "The Last Word", this is a story about two people who fall in love as the world begins to fall apart. * Producers: Gillian Berrie (Hallam Foe) and Malte Grunert(Ioncinema.com Preview Page // IMDb Link) ...

Based on this trailer we just got our hands on I'd say it's a safe bet that Scottish director Richard Jobson's upcoming thriller, New Town Killers, will be a frenetically paced and twisted little chase film. To quote Cyberhal; "it looks well good."
Two private bankers, Alistair and Jamie, who have the world at their feet get their kicks from playing a 12 hour game of hunt, hide and seek with people from the margins of society. Their next target is Sean Macdonald a parentless teenager who lives with his sister on a housing estate on the outskirts of Edinburgh. She's in debt, he's going nowhere fast. Sean agrees to play for cash. He soon realizes he's walked into twelve hours of hell where survival is the name of the game.
