NBCUniversal is giving a straight-to-series order to three drama series for Peacock from Universal Studio Group, it was revealed Wednesday at the company’s TCA presentation.

Chad Verdi’s Vmi Releasing has acquired the opioid crisis drama “Junction,” which is the directorial debut of “How to Make It in America” actor Bryan Greenberg. Greenberg stars in the film along with Josh Peck, Sophia Bush and his wife Jamie Chung.

Under Vmi releasing, “Junction” is slated for a theatrical and VOD release on Jan. 24. As per the press release, the film description reads: “[‘Junction’] chronicles the modern-day opioid crisis in America from three different points of view: the CEO of a pharmaceutical company, a doctor and a patient. Each character will have to come face to face with the decisions they have made and their role in the epidemic.” Also starring in the film are Griffin Dunne, Ashley Madekwe and Ryan Eggold.

These awards follow on the heels of the Golden Globes on Jan. 7 and the nominations for the SAG Awards on 10 and predate by one day the winners of the 75th Emmy Awards, which were rescheduled from Sept. 2023 to Jan. 15, 2024.

“The Morning Show” leads all other TV series with six nominations heading into tonight’s ceremony. The final season of “Succession” is right on its heels with five, though. A host of shows nabbed four bids each, including “Abbott Elementary,” “A Small Light,” “Beef,” “Lessons in Chemistry,” “Loki,” “Reservation Dogs” and “The Bear.”

The past week has seen a crush of awards season events and ceremonies, starting with the Golden Globes a week ago, then the Governors Awards, scads of guild nominations, and tomorrow night marks the telecast of the delayed Emmys. Tonight, January 14, the Critics Choice Awards will take place in Los Angeles, at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, starting at 4:00 p.m. Pt/7:00 p.m. Pt. Here’s how to watch the show, which this year is hosted by Chelsea Handler.

The show will air live on the East Coast and in Los Angeles on The CW. Beginning at 2 p.m. Pt, Ktla-5, Los Angeles’ CW affiliate, will host a red carpet show ahead of the three-hour awards show. If you don’t have cable, hit up DirecTV Stream, YouTube TV, or Hulu + Live TV. But you can also follow along with the Critics Choice Association’s social media accounts for updates.

An investigative journalist falls for her subject: A handsome, world-renowned surgeon.

That logline could be the start of a rom-com. Instead, it’s the beginning of a sinister story, one that’s told on Dr. Death.

The second season of the Peacock anthology based on the Wondery podcast brings to screen the true-crime story of Paolo Macchiarini (played by Édgar Ramírez), the pioneering Italian surgeon whose revolutionary biosynthetic tracheas could be a medical solution to the traditional trachea transplant. His work is so impressive, he becomes the subject of a TV profile from New York journalist, and former NBC producer, Benita Alexander (Mandy Moore), who — spoiler alert — ends up contributing to a much more important Vanity Fair article that ultimately unmasks the real Paolo Macchiarini.

But in the time between their first encounter in 2013 and that 2016 article, the pair fall in love. A whirlwind romance of sorts ensues, where Alexander...

The story of Peacock’s Dr. Death in its second season is really two stories, which intersect through duplicitous surgeon Paolo Macchiarini (Edgar Ramírez).

In one, a respected journalist (Mandy Moore’s Benita) falls in love with a con man, and then eventually retakes control of her life by taking him down. In the other, doctors grow suspicious of, and then work to stop, a celebrated colleague whose supposedly miraculous procedures are actually killing his patients.

Late in the season, a skeptical reporter tells Benita that the former narrative is the more interesting one, since it’s simpler, juicier, more relatable. But the show, created by Ashley Michel Hoban, only really comes alive in the latter. Stitched together, the two halves make for a lumpy, if occasionally gripping, whole.

Though he’s the reason we’re all here, Paolo himself remains something of an enigma. The premiere foreshadows his downfall...

Prime Video’s “Fallout” Gets First Look

The bunker door is creaking open at Prime Video. The streamer has released the first images for its upcoming “Fallout” series adaptation, starring Ella Purnell, Walton Goggins, Kyle MacLachlan, and more.

Based on the Bethesda video game franchise of the same name, the series takes place “in a future, post-apocalyptic Los Angeles [where] citizens must live in underground bunkers to protect themselves from radiation, mutants, and bandits after nuclear annihilation.”

This Is Us star Mandy Moore and Florida Man‘s Edgar Ramirez star in season two of Peacock’s Dr. Death anthology series, based on the “Miracle Man” season of Wondery’s Dr. Death podcast. The streamer’s first teaser for season two introduces Ramirez as professor, researcher, and thoracic surgeon Dr. Paolo Macchiarini, a despicable doctor whose carefully constructed facade cracks when it’s discovered what he’s really doing to patients.

The eight-episode season also features Luke Kirby, Ashley Madekwe, and Gustaf Hammarsten. Ashley Michel Hoban writes, executive produces, and serves as showrunner. Additional executive producers include Patrick Macmanus, Lisa Gase, Escape Artists’ Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Steve Tisch, Taylor Latham, and Wondery’s Aaron Hart, Hernan Lopez, and Marshall Lewy.

One of Peacock's most successful series, Dr. Death, will be back on the air before the year's end, and we couldn't be more excited.

The streaming service on Friday announced that Dr. Death Season 2 will premiere on Thursday, December 21, 2023.

If you're looking for your Christmas binge, you'll be happy to know that all eight episodes will be available on that date.

What is Dr. Death About?

Dr. Death Season 1, headlined by Joshua Jackson, was highly binge-able, featuring twists and turns that made us want to watch the next episode, so releasing all the episodes at once is a decent tactic.

Obviously, Christopher Duntsch's storyline wrapped up at the end of the season, so the anthology will feature a chilling new story for Dr. Death Season 2.

Bradley Quirk, who has had previous stints with Brightstar and Altitude, is joining the Netflix U.K. film team, Variety has confirmed.

Quirk joins as manager, U.K. He is part of director, U.K. Mona Qureshi’s team. Anne Mensah serves as Netflix’s U.K. content vice president.

Quirk was previously with Brightstar Film and TV, the U.K. production outfit founded by producers Tanya Seghatchian (“The Crown”) and John Woodward (“Cold War”). Earlier, Quirk was with Altitude as head of development where he worked on the films “Calm With Horses,” “Rocks” and “The Girl With All the Gifts.”

In a previous stint with Pathe, he worked on “Philomena” and in a role with the BFI Film Fund, on “Welcome to the Punch” and “Broken.”

In 2019, Quirk served as executive producer on “Horrible Histories: The Movie – Rotten Romans.”

Vmi Releasing has acquired North American distribution rights to Verdi Productions’ Bryan Greenberg and Griffin Dunne opioid crisis thriller Junction out of the Cannes market.

Greenberg, whose acting credits include How to Make It In America, wrote and directed the story which tackles the crisis from the viewpoints of three people who must reckon with the consequences of their choices: the CEO of a pharmaceutical company, a doctor, and a patient.

There is a great story of directorial ingenuity related to Willem Dafoe's performance in "American Psycho." Mary Haddon asked him to play his scenes as a private eye investigating the disappearance of Patrick Bateman's colleague in three different ways. First, he would act like he was totally clueless; then as if he was suspicious; and lastly, as if he was absolutely certain the psychotic yuppie was involved. She then cut the different takes together to keep audiences wrong-footed about how much his character knew.

"The Strays" plays like writer-director Nathaniel Martello-White attempted a similar trick, helming three different versions of the same story in a different genre, then taking an act from each. What we get is a frustratingly uneven movie that is scarier as psychological horror, works better as a social drama, and flunks completely as a home invasion thriller.

Netflix’s director of U.K. features Fiona Lamptey has exited the streamer after 19 months, Variety understands.

No reason has been given for the move and Netflix declined to comment.

Lamptey joined Netflix U.K. Oct. in 2021 from Fruit Tree Media with a brief to expand Netflix’s U.K. talent roster and scout new IP to adapt for feature-length productions. She previously spent 13 years at Channel 4 and its feature division Film4.

Among the features developed during her time at the streamer are “I Came By,” starring “Downton Abbey’s” Hugh Bonneville, “The Wonder,” which starred Florence Pugh and “The Strays” starring Ashley Madekwe and Bukky Bakray.

When the film abruptly ended, I waited for Ashton Kutcher to pop from behind my sofa to announce a film critic Punk’d spin-off, where they cut to a movie’s credits twenty minutes too early. There’s a heavy-handed ominousness from the first frame of The Strays, Netflix’s new entry into the stuffed category of social horror. Dissonant music plays over a concrete block apartment building in London, in which Cheryl (Ashley Madekwe), a light-skinned Black woman, appears in distress. There are bank statements crumpled on the counter, a headline blaring “Black kids betrayed by schools”, a mention of credit card debt in a phone call to her sister, a voice-cracking lament of wanting more. It’s the mid-2000s, and someone keeps calling Cheryl on her old brick phone before she walks out the door with a duffel bag and note about popping to the hairdresser, presumably on the run.

It’s an unsettling, propulsive start that provokes several promising questions – where is she going?...
