Bobby Moresco, who won an Oscar as co-writer of “Crash,” and more recently directed “Lamborghini – The Man Behind the Legend,” is set to direct the biopic “Maserati: A Racing Life” about the family that in 1914 started making the high-performance Maserati automobiles in a garage in Bologna.
Like “Lamborghini,” the Maserati origins movie is being produced by Andrea Iervolino’s Ilbe Group, in which he is partnered with Monika Bacardi. Ilbe has taken a liking for films about Italy’s iconic automakers. They are also among producers of Micheal Mann’s upcoming “Ferrari” with Adam Driver, Penélope Cruz and Shailene Woodley.
“Maserati” is the story of three brothers Alfieri, Ettore and Ernesto who started out making spark plugs and devices for aircraft engines and, driven by a passion for fast cars, entered the auto racing world. Italian producer Andrea Iervolino is planning to bring to the big screen “Maserati: a Racing Life,” an English-language biopic about the family behind the high-performance automobiles that, along with Ferrari and Lamborghini, Italy is known for.
Iervolino’s Ilbe Group – in which he is partnered with Monika Bacardi – previously produced the Bobby Moresco-directed biopic “Lamborghini: The Man Behind the Legend” and is also among producers of Micheal Mann’s upcoming “Ferrari” with Adam Driver, Penélope Cruz and Shailene Woodley. He told Variety he sees “Maserati” as a natural segue to those films about Italy’s iconic automakers.
“I want to celebrate the entrepreneurial genius of Italians, their history and humanity,” he said.
“Italy isn’t just pizza, mandolins, pasta and the mob,” Iervolino added. “It’s a country of many geniuses who left a huge legacy. When it comes to the auto making sector these families were pioneers, way ahead of the curve.

Frank Grillo is fantastic as Ferruccio Lamborghini, the man behind the legend, in the new biopic from Lionsgate. Lamborghini: The Man Behind the Legend is a movie written and directed by Robert Moresco, starring Frank Grillo and Mira Sorvino.
A standard biopic that, true enough, revitalizes an era, but does not give us much more than a glimpse of the 50’s and 60’s Italy.
Frank Grillo does, though, offer us a very good portrayal in a role that fits him like a glove.
Premise
Ferruccio Lamborghini start was in tractor manufacturing. Once World War II started, he turned to the manufacture of military vehicles, which ultimately led him to become the designer of the high end Lamborghini cars. The company took another turn in 1963 dedicating its capacities to the manufacture of sports cars Automobili Lamborghini.
Movie Review
Most of us know the Brand, and now we are offered a chronicle of the history behind high end sports cars. It is interesting, but does not shine on a dramatic and artistic level.

The cars are the stars in “Lamborghini: The Man Behind the Legend,” a pamphletized biopic that does the easy thing — beautifying Italy and vintage automobiles — but stalls with everything involving humans.
Starring Frank Grillo as the titular engineer and carmaker in middle age, writer-director Bobby Moresco’s admiring portrait is a gauzy, stuffy showroom piece that romanticizes everything from piazzas and vineyards to factory floors and car engines but never gets out of first gear in dramatizing a dreamer’s achievement or — when it came to upsetting the dominance of Ferrari in the auto world — a competitor’s drive.
The latter element is tritely illustrated by the recurring use of an imagined nighttime drag race in which Grillo, behind the wheel of his character’s famous ‘70s Countach design, squares off on a lonely road against Ferrari (Gabriel Byrne) in one of his ‘80s-era models. But no matter how many...

Frank Grillo said Tuesday he will star as Ferruccio Lamborghini in a biopic about the Italian car maker’s life, replacing Antonio Banderas in the role.
Grillo broke the news on “The Adam Corolla Show” Tuesday, adding that in addition to replacing Banderas in the film, Alec Baldwin, who was meant to play Enzo Ferrari in the movie, is also no longer attached due to scheduling conflicts. Grillo says Banderas dropped out because another project he’s currently filming ran long.
Bobby Moresco, the Oscar-winning screenwriter behind “Crash,” is directing and writing the film titled “Lamborghini,” which was first announced with Banderas and Baldwin set to star as far back as 2017.
Grillo added that he’ll be traveling to Rome on Wednesday to begin filming. But he did not share or was unaware who will be starring alongside him as Ferrari (though Corolla joked that it’d be Jonah Hill).

Aaron Sorkin’s acclaimed and increasingly relevant political drama The Trial of the Chicago 7, which revolves around the raucous trial of a group of protesters accused of disrupting the 1968 Chicago Democratic Convention, took a leading four awards including best picture at the just concluded 25th annual Capri, Hollywood – The International Film Festival. If past winners at this Italian fest are any indication, the victories should give the Netflix film a boost stateside during Oscar season.

While the Venice Film Festival is poised to lead the way among top-tier film events a trio of smaller Italian summer fests with international standing is now also set to hold physical editions prior to September when the Lido plans to take its post-pandemic plunge.
Restrictions are rapidly lifting in Italy, where the coronavirus curve is finally flattening after the longest lockdown in Europe. Starting Wednesday Italy is allowing travelers from the 25 other members of the Schengen visa-free travel area that covers much of Europe to enter the country with no restrictions.
And, along with Venice topper Alberto Barbera, several other Italian fest chiefs are busy trying to rise to the challenge of not cancelling their events or making them go entirely digital.
Italy’s first post-lockdown shindig, barring complications, will be the annual Ischia Global Film and Music Fest, renamed “Ischia Smart 2020” this year, and set to be held...

CNN is pulling some funny business with Colin Quinn.
The cable network has set “Colin Quinn: Red State Blue State,” as its first-ever comedy special. Written by and starring the stand-up comedian, the event is an-hour long presentation of Quinn’s Off-Broadway show of the same name that ran in New York earlier this year. “Red State Blue State” tackles “the absurdities, hypocrisies and calamities on both sides of the political divide.”
“We are always looking for new ways to engage our viewers by exploring the issues that are most important to them,” Amy Entelis, CNN Worldwide’s Evp for Talent & Content Development, said. “Colin Quinn’s show is a smart political satire that speaks to what is dividing our country.”
“Colin Quinn: Red State Blue State” is directed by Bobby Moresco with Tony Hernandez, Brian Stern, Amy Entelis and Lizzie Fox serving as executive producers.

Colin Quinn: Red State Blue State is set to open at Audible’s Minetta Lane Theatre in Manhattan’s West Village on January 5 with an official opening night on January 22. The new comedy written by and starring the titular Quinn will play March 3.
In Red State Blue State, Quinn lays bare the absurdities, hypocrisies and calamities on both sides of the political divide. No one is safe from Colin’s satirical crossfire as he will come after the liberals just as much as much as the conservatives and everyone in between.
“We all know I don’t owe this country anything,” said Quinn. “In fact it probably owes me. You, however, owe the country a visit to my show to give it a proper send off before it implodes.”
The play will be directed by Bobby Moresco, who last directed Colin Quinn on Broadway in An Irish Wake.
