Exclusive: Leland Douglas, the screenwriter behind the David Gordon Green comedy Nutcrackers, has signed with Thruline Entertainment for management.
Marking Ben Stiller’s first star vehicle in a few years, Nutcrackers has him playing the work-obsessed Mike, who must reluctantly travel to rural Ohio to look after his four rambunctious nephews after their parents die in a car accident. What begins as a three-day trip to find foster care turns into weeks of farm-life mayhem – and the realization that he doesn’t need to find them a home, they’ve found one for him.
The film is coming off of its premiere as the opening film of the Toronto Film Festival, where it sold to Hulu for eight figures, in the first splashy deal of the fest. Also starring Linda Cardellini, Edi Patterson, Tim Heidecker and Toby Hussles, pic is produced by Rivulet’s Rob Paris and Mike Witherill, and Rough House’s Nate Meyer.

As many pilot cast options are coming to an end this month, the broadcast networks are making decisions on the projects that have been shot this fall.
NBC in June committed to filming three comedy pilots this year, Night School, American Auto and Grand Crew (fka Phil Augusta Jackson/Dan Goor comedy). All have been completed, with Night School becoming one of the projects to shoot as Hollywood production restarted in late summer.

The multi-camera Night School, an adaptation of the 2018 feature, is not moving forward, while the single-camera American Auto and Grand Crew have been heating up. These are the first series-pickup decisions since Susan Rovner joined NBCUniversal as Chairman of Entertainment Content in October. Since she oversees entertainment content creation for the entire NBCU portfolio, it is feasible that projects could travel and end up on another network/platform, including streamer Peacock.

In Netflix, Mascots has found a perfect home. One that permits any viewer to pop on Christopher Guest’s latest mockumentary from a comfortable position – or even better – while more productive activities are accomplished. Guest’s Best In Show rehash with costumed mascots meanders more than it entertains, given how laughs don’t incapacitate like we’re used to from such a legend of dry comedy. This is the kind of comedy you can float in-and-out of – like a performance-heavy fever dream – as disillusioned mascot personalities ramble on and on about their lofty, off-color dreams. You will laugh, but the world of Mascots isn’t as quirkily inviting as A Mighty Wind, for example. It’s still funny-ish, yet far from the hopeful home run.
Guest’s latest stars a bevy of big-time mascots who all have dreams of winning their first Fluffy, the official award of the (maybe) soon-to-be televised World Mascot Championship.

The world of film is obviously as broad and far-reaching as it could be, and no matter how much we might feel that certain films are so good that everyone should like them, people have differing tastes. I might think My Dinner with Andre is easily one of the best films there is, despite the fact that most people can’t finish it. Virtually every list of the best films ever includes Casablanca somewhere close to the top, but I agree with the cast and crew in thinking that it isn’t really anything special. Such is life.
But, if you don’t have Waiting for Guffman, or Best in Show, or both, on your list of favorite movies, I just don’t get you.
Christopher Guest‘s mockumentary films (which also include A Mighty Wind, and For Your Consideration – which are both good, but not nearly as solid) all include familiar faces,...

NBC had major success with last year’s live Sound of Music and are actively planning Peter Pan Live for this year. Now they are wondering if an old school sitcom would work. Back in the day the networks sometimes had truly live TV shows that were not taped and edited before airing. This was changed when technology improved, but NBC may be considering to return to the old format. The network is reportedly researching into a Christopher Moynihan’s based show. It would be called Hospitality with a possibility of being live on both coasts with live TV spots. So far we do not know anything beyond the previous info. However, it could be a sign in the direction of where networks should go in the future.
Wow, I never thought we would ever see a network serious consider that. Of course right now it is all talks and nothing is set.

The quest to get Paget Brewster into a comedy pilot is still underway, but it seems like this has been going on for so long that I really hope this will be the one that sticks.
