A train speeds down the railroad, with nothing but dark, shadowed tracks ahead. Suspenseful nondiegetic music plays. The train accelerates, approaches and passes through the names of people involved in making the film – producers, stars, writers, and the director. This continues, until the audience no longer sees the journey from the train’s perspective. The train materializes out of a tunnel and the audience is placed at a safe distance from the suspenseful ride. These are the opening credits of Walter Forde’s The Ghost Train.

On Tuesday, Alex Wagner’s MSNBC panel tackled the heated Republican primary race between five-term Sen. Richard Lugar (R-in) and Indiana State Treasurer Richard Murdoch. The panel seemed to view the intraparty Republican feud as a continuation of the Gop’s rightward-drift ever farther away from the center of the American electorate. New York Daily News Columnist S.E. Cupp, however, had the temerity to suggest that the Republican party was pushed in that direction by the opposition – an assertion that was met with near revulsion by her fellow left-leaning panelists.

Spread out across 14 discs, this set collects all seven seasons of the show, as well as a good deal of bonus features (each episode features an introduction with series creator John Mortimer), but this is, in all likelihood, a set that was meant to rally old fans rather than attract new ones. Even within the time-frame of the series, Rumpole shows its considerable age, with its commitment to showing social ills only accentuating how stubbornly quaint the show really is.
