He is an actor and writer, known for The Count of Monte Cristo (2002), Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006) and Local Hero (1983). He has been married to Sally Kinghorn since December 17, 2001. They have three children.

- He was inspired to act by Stan Laurel. Both their fathers were against them going on the stage and both came around to accept their son's determination.
