After premiering to incredible success at the end of 2024, Wicked could have secured itself an almost guaranteed Oscar nomination with a single addition that the sequel has already confirmed is happening. With $465 million under its belt, Wicked has proven to be one of the biggest movies of the year. John M. Chu's Wicked is only the first part of the beloved musical's story, and there are several questions left unanswered by the time the credits roll. Wicked was one of the biggest films of 2024, adapting the hugely popular 2003 Broadway musical, in turn based on the 1995 book Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. The film was a huge hit commercially and critically, even while released alongside some other massive films that saw similar success. One of the biggest reasons for Wicked's great reviews was its characters, as the film boasts a large cast made up of plenty of interesting individuals, even those who don't get very much screen time.

One of these characters is Elphaba's (Cynthia Erivo) childhood nanny, a bear who is known colloquially as Nanny Bear, and alternatively Dulcibear (Sharon D. Clarke). She is a very minor character when compared to the rest of Wicked's cast, showing up in the beginning flashback scene that explains Elphaba's birth and childhood, and then disappearing for the rest of the movie.

The Wicked: Part 1 soundtrack featuring actors Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande offers a new take on the beloved Broadway songs, making the album appealing long after leaving the movie theater. Since their official announcement back in 2012, the Wicked movies were highly anticipated on a global scale due to the A-list actors and the story connected to The Wizard of Oz. The popularity of Wickeds Obc album also increased excitement. After the Broadway show was released in 2003, the original soundtrack became the fifth-best-selling cast recording of all time (via Playbill).

As such, the songs in the two-part Wicked movie adaptation needed to be perfect. Luckily, the producers mainly chose cast members with musical theater backgrounds, giving them the skills necessary to handle the challenging music composed by Stephen Schwartz. The choice paid off with all the songs in Wicked: Part 1 bolstering the magical ambiance and exciting storyline.

Love it or loathe it, there is no denying that Richard Curtis’ Love Actually is a modern Christmas favourite for many. With its saccharine stories of love, lust and, in the case of Andrew Lincoln’s character – let’s be honest – stalking, the film has indelibly inked itself into the fabric of the festive season. It’s almost become a tradition to run an article contributing to the Love Actually debate – and who knows, one year we might even get around to it (we won’t – Ed).

If you’re anxiously counting down the days until November 22, when “Wicked” arrives in theaters, you may want to add an additional date to your calendar. On Tuesday, November 19, a new TV special titled “Defying Gravity: The Curtain Rises on Wicked” will air at 10:00 p.m. on NBC. That’s just three days prior to the film’s worldwide release by Universal Pictures. Peacock will then stream the television program on November 20.

Jim Carter, who famously played Carson the master butler on Downton Abbey, clearly was taken by the leading artist giving a terrifically moving performance as Dolly Gallagher Levi upon the London Palladium stage. “That’s my wife,” he declared during the interval.

Indeed it was. Imelda Staunton was creating a gold-standard portrait of the meddlesome fixer at the heart of the landmark musical Hello, Dolly! created by Jerry Herman and Michael Stewart from Thornton Wilder’s The Matchmaker.

“It’s a brilliant production,” Carter told me.

Green Wing is one of the most memorable comedies of the early 2000s. Following the trials and tribulations of the staff who populate East Hampton Hospital, the writing was frequently silly and surreal, and it featured star making turns from the likes of Tamsin Greig, Stephen Mangan and Michelle Gomez.

Underrated comedy Campus followed a similar scenario, this time in the fictional Kirke University, where Andy Nyman’s domineering don Jonty De Wolfe ruled with an iron fist. That series has also built up quite a fanbase, and rightly so. Now? There’s more for that fanbase to look forward to as well.

Some anthology collections unite multiple filmmakers, each taking on a segment. Some employ a single director for cohesion. Even the framework in which the film weaves its tales varies, whether by conventional wraparound or a complete remix.

For the viewer, anthologies offer a grab bag of bite-sized horror treats; there’s no telling what kind of horror the next segment will bring. This week’s streaming picks highlight horror anthologies that run the gamut from classic anthology format to experimental, from lighthearted to bone-chilling.

Ghost Stories – AMC+, Plex, Shudder

Written and directed by Jeremy Dyson and Andy Nyman, based on their 2010 stage play, Ghost Stories challenges the traditional anthology’s boundaries.

Cult classic sitcom Green Wing has been resurrected as a podcast with the original cast and creative team.

Back in 2004, fresh from the success of sketch show Smack The Pony, writer Victoria Pile created Green Wing, a sitcom set in a hospital.

With an ensemble cast that included Tamsin Greig and Stephen Mangan – who would later reunite to star opposite Matt LeBlanc in Episodes – the comedy is helped enormously by committed clowning the cast, particularly Mark Heap and Michelle Gomez. The show ran for two series from 2004 to 2006 and, in a move more in common with American sitcoms, had a large pool of writers.

After the show ended, the same creative team made the terrific University comedy Campus in 2009, which despite only running for one series is well worth tracking down, especially for the tour de force performance from Andy Nyman as megalomaniacal monster and Vice Chancellor Jonty De Wolfe.

Netflix and the Annecy Film Festival have fostered an incredible relationship over the last several years. No other major studio or distributor has been as omnipresent at the French film festival, and this year should be no different.

Patrick J. Adams has been cast in the upcoming Netflix series Lockerbie. Adams is best known for his work playing Mike Ross on the hit TV series Suits. Lockerbie is an upcoming six-part Netflix series about the fallout of the 1988 terrorist attack on Pan Am Flight 103.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, Adams is one of multiple people joining the upcoming cast of Lockerbie. In addition to Adams, the series has added Merritt Weaver, Connor Swindells, and Eddie Marsan. The exact roles that these four new actors will play on Lockerbie has yet to be revealed. Numerous additional cast members, also in undisclosed roles, were also announced, including Peter Mullan, Tony Curran, Lauren Lyle, Andrew Rothney, Phyllis Logan, Parker Sawyers, James Harkness, Khalid Laith and Amanda Drew. A synopsis of the show was also released, which reads as follows:

Catherine McCormack has joined Colin Firth in Sky and Peacock’s upcoming limited series “Lockerbie,” about the 1988 flight disaster in which 259 passengers and crew members were killed.

The “Slow Horses” actor will play Jane Swire, the wife of Dr. Jim Swire (Firth). The Swires lost their daughter, Flora, in the terror attack on Pan Am Flight 103 and have been searching for justice ever since.
