Lloyd Osbourne(1868-1947)
- Writer
American-born Lloyd Osbourne (1868-1947) was the son of Fanny Osbourne
Stevenson and the stepson of author
Robert Louis Stevenson, with whom
he collaborated on three novels: "The Wrong Box" (1889), "The Wrecker"
(1892) and "The Ebb-Tide" (1894) ("The Wrong Box" and "The Ebb-Tide"
have been adapted for film). Stevenson's most famous work, "Treasure
Island", grew out of his efforts to entertain Lloyd on a rainy day in
1881, when he drew a map for the boy that evolved into the pirate
story. Osbourne followed his mother and Stevenson on their journeys and
settled with them in Samoa. Later he traveled a great deal and lived in
France and the US. Osbourne was twice married and divorced, first to
Katherine Durham and then to his mother's friend, Ethel Head. The
author of various novels and short stories, he continually pursued
literary fame, which, except for the works he co-authored with his
stepfather, eluded him.
