When you have a title with the blunt-force impact of Nightbitch and a premise as seemingly outrageous as a woman who responds to the isolation, alienation and self-sacrifice of motherhood by turning canine, you don’t want a movie that holds back. But Marielle Heller’s adaptation of the 2021 Rachel Yoder novel, while it starts out promisingly with sharp humor and tantalizing jabs of incipient weirdness, doesn’t take its ideas far enough to be seriously provocative. That’s too bad for Amy Adams, who runs with everything the story throws at her but gets shortchanged by the script.
It’s hardly a radical revelation at this point that not every housewife and mother is June Cleaver, no matter what regressive world J.D. Vance wants to live in. But it’s disappointing that a book greeted as a feminist fairy tale, which dared to say out loud some dark truths...

"We're good at what we do... because we use alternative methods of recovery." Vertical Ent has released an official trailer for an indie crime thriller titled Collection, the latest feature made by indie writer / director Marianna Palka. Recently known for her role on the Emmy winning & SAG nominated Netflix series Glow, she previously directed Egg (2018), starring Christina Hendricks and Anna Camp, which first premiered at Tribeca to rave reviews. This is her seventh film since her premiere film, Good Dick. Collection tells of a grieving father who grapples with the seedy, manipulative world of high stakes debt collection while also struggling to shed the tragedies of his past. He'll find himself pitted against his best friend, his prodigy and his love. Collection stars Alex Pettyfer, Mike Vogel, Breeda Wool, Willam Belli, Shakira Barrera, Joseph Julian Soria, and Paige Howard. This looks as dull and forgettable as the title, not much to see.

Patton Oswalt is heading back to the Sundance Film Festival, though the comedian won’t need a snow coat this year.
The Big Fan star and 2017 jury member will be hosting the 2021 Sff Awards Night on February 2, the Robert Redford founded shindig announced today.
Semi-virtual like all of Sundance ’21 because of the coronavirus pandemic, that awards ceremony will feature winners from all of the six competition categories – which saw 2021 jury members unveiled last week. As well, the awards show will see participation from the likes of Park City alum Diego Luna, Alison Brie, and Shira Haas, Sff also said today.
Following in the proud line of past Sff Awards show hosting such as Marianna Palka, Tig Notaro and Jessica Williams, the news of Oswalt’s ringmaster role comes just three days before Sundance 2021 kicks off, online and otherwise. The approximately 120-film strong festival will run until February 3.

Four years ago, Zoe Lister-Jones made headlines by hiring all-female crew for her directorial debut, the musical comedy “Band Aid.” That was a much bigger deal back then than it is today, when behind-the-scenes inequality has become a perpetual hot topic in Hollywood, but “Band Aid” stands as an early example of what’s possible when the person behind the camera makes an effort.
Lister-Jones doesn’t take credit for pushing the idea of all-female crews into the zeitgeist, but the film had a measurable impact on conversations about gender equality on set. Other productions have tried similar hiring schemes, from indies like Marianna Palka’s “Egg” to Ava DuVernay’s series “Queen Sugar,” which has only hired female directors for four seasons running. The most recent iteration of the Celluloid Ceiling study found that percentages of women working in key behind-the-scenes roles on the top 100 and 250 grossing films has...

“Glow” will not proceed with Season 4 at Netflix as planned, Variety has confirmed.
The Emmy-nominated Netflix comedy series about a troupe of female professional wrestlers had originally been renewed for a fourth and final season, but plans for that season have now been scrapped due to production delays caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
“We’ve made the difficult decision not to do a fourth season of ‘Glow’ due to Covid, which makes shooting this physically intimate show with its large ensemble cast especially challenging,” a Netflix spokesperson said in a statement. “We are so grateful to creators Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch, Jenji Kohan and all the writers, cast and crew for sharing this story about the incredible women of ‘Glow’ with us and the world.”
The show had been renewed for its last season last year. Production had begun on Season 4 earlier this year but was shut down early on due to the pandemic.

Through the first pair of seasons on the Netflix show “Glow,” most of the characters have been in search of something. Even as Season 3 transplants the series’ central group of wrestlers to the bright lights of Las Vegas, it sure seems like that’s one thing that won’t be changing any time soon.
The show’s three main characters are all still holding on to a tenuous grasp on cooperation. Ruth (Alison Brie) and Debbie (Betty Gilpin) are navigating their complicated relationship inside and outside the ring.
Sam (Marc Maron) made the trip out to Vegas with the rest of the Glow team, but it seems like he and Ruth haven’t quite gotten over last season’s brush with something a little more than friendship. Ruth’s boyfriend Russell (Victor Quinaz) is also in tow, giving her plenty to juggle when she’s not headlining nightly Vegas shows...

The 2019 Sundance Film Festival drew to a close this evening with the annual awards ceremony, which was hosted by filmmaker and actress Marianna Palka at the Basin Recreation Fieldhouse in Park City, Utah.
Of the four Grand Jury Prizes given to competition films — the festival’s highest honors — each was directed or co-directed by a female filmmaker, reflecting last year’s Directing winners, who were all women. This year’s Grand Jury Prize winners include Chinonye Chukwu’s “Clemency” (U.S. Dramatic), Nanfu Wang’s “One Child Nation” (U.S. Documentary), Joanna Hogg’s “The Souvenir” (World Dramatic), and Tamara Kotevska and Ljubomir Stefanov’s “Honeyland” (World Documentary).
Both of the U.S. winners are still without U.S. distribution, so here’s hoping a big win at tonight’s show might loosen up some purse strings for these essential — and now award-winning — features.

The Sundance Film Festival concluded with five female directors — and one man — sharing the grand jury prizes in the four main competition categories.
In U.S. dramatic competition, African-American writer-director Chinonye Chukwu won for “Clemency,” in which Alfre Woodard plays a prison warden who connects with a death-row inmate. Meanwhile, in the world dramatic category, Joanna Hogg’s “The Souvenir” specifically looks at the challenges and setbacks facing a young female filmmaker, who puts her directing ambitions on hold in order to deal with the drug-addicted man who monopolizes her attention.
Top U.S. documentary honors went to Nanfu Wang and Jialing Zhang’s “One Child Nation,” a personal exploration of the suffering and aftermath of China’s infamous population-control policy through co-director Wang’s family. In the world documentary competition, “Honeyland” — an artful portrait of a Macedonian beekeeper struggling to protect her livelihood — was a clear favorite with the jury,...

“When everybody was saying ‘No’ this story does not have an audience, you, Sundance and the people who have seen this film have proven that there is an audience for this film, and I thank you!” beamed Clemency director Chinonye Chukwu after accepting the U.S. Dramatic Grand Jury Prize for her death penalty drama Clemency about a female prison warden who has a crisis of consciousness.
Starring Alfre Woodard in the lead role, and Aldis Hodge as the prisoner she ponders mercy for, Chukwu said “I wrote this because I wanted audiences, ,I wanted us, I wanted myself to connect with the ecosystem of humanity’s connected to incarceration, so we as a society can stop defining people by their worst possible acts, that we can end mass incarceration, and dismantle the mass prison industrial complex, and root our societies in true justice and mercy and freedom, which is...

When the Sundance Film Festival kicks off next week, the annual event will flood Park City, Utah with plenty of high-powered talent, and it seems that this year’s jury members might offer up as much notoriety and star power as the people on the big screen. The Sundance Institute has announced the “20 celebrated and revered expert voices across film, art, culture, and science” who will make up this year’s juries, designed to award feature-length and short films shown at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival with 12 prizes. Those names include filmmakers Jane Campion, Damien Chazelle, Yance Ford, Rachel Grady, Ciro Guerra; screenwriters Phyllis Nagy and Sev Ohanian; actors Tessa Thompson, Sheila Vand, and Corey Stoll; and many more.
All this year’s winners, save for the short film awardees (which are announced at a separate ceremony on January 29), will be announced at a ceremony on February 2 that will be livestreamed at sundance.

It’s a fascinating thing to watch a director’s work evolve over a 10-year period, particularly if the director is a woman moving from her 20s to her 30s, the pressing concerns changing with every year. Marianna Palka debuted in 2008 with her film “Good Dick,” exploring the relationship between a dysfunctional young video-store clerk and a man who rents his porn from her. It’s a darkly comic film obsessed with the desperation of youth and the desire for connection, themes that found its way into her next two films, “I’m the Same” and “Always Worthy.”
But something has shifted in Palka’s work in the past few years, a change marked with 2017’s “Bitch,” about a stay-at-home mom who snaps and begins acting like a rabid dog. This is a film searching to examine the deficiencies of traditional gender dynamics in marriage and family, poking holes in...

The 15th Annual Gold Derby TV Award winners were announced on Thursday, September 6, during a live webcast announcement (watch it above). These prizes were decided by hundreds of Gold Derby users who arguably know more about the television landscape than a lot of TV academy members. And they spread the wealth when picking this year’s recipients. “The Assassination of Gianni Versace” was the biggest winner with four awards, followed by “The Handmaid’s Tale” with three, but the top series prizes actually went to “Game of Thrones” and “Atlanta.”
“Versace” swept the longform categories, claiming Best Limited Series, Best Movie/Mini Actor (Darren Criss), Best Movie/Mini Supporting Actress (Judith Light) and Best Movie/Mini Supporting Actor (Cody Fern). The last two prizes in that field went to “USS Callister (Black Mirror)” (Best TV Movie) and “The Tale” (Best Movie/Mini Actress for Laura Dern).

On many levels, dressing the characters in “Glow” was a dream job for costume designer Beth Morgan. Not only was the creation of the costumes fun and inventive, she says, but each of the characters on the Netflix series is so well developed that it gave her countless opportunities to individualize them.
“It’s such a great story about women,” says Morgan, who has created looks for TV shows such as “Last Man on Earth” and “Key & Peele.” On both seasons of “Glow” she’s designed costumes for all the show’s characters entirely from scratch, talking at length about each character’s style and outfits with show creators Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch.

One of the surprise Netflix hits of last summer took hold of audiences at the end of June and didn’t let up the entire season. A year later, the show is looking to do the same thing again.
Following one of the big questions for Ruth (Alison Brie) and Debbie (Betty Gilpin) at the end of Season 1, it looks like things are still dicey in their friendship. But whatever uncertainty there is in the personal relationships, the in-the-ring action looks just as good as it’s been. And on the outskirts, it looks like Sam Sylvia (Marc Maron) is up to his usual irascible ways as the man in charge.
In addition to Brie, Maron, and Gilpin, “Glow” has one of the best ensembles on TV. Season 2 will see the return of Britney Young as Carmen (who wrestles as “Machu Picchu”), Sydelle Noel, Kate Nash, Marianna Palka, Jackie Tohn,...

Alison Brie and Betty Gilpin were so invested in selling their ability to get physical during their second “Glow” audition together that series creators Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch were afraid the actresses would injure themselves right out of a job.
“You were lifting her onto your back, and we were like, ‘No, no, no, no, no!’” Flahive said to Brie during a “Glow” Fyc event earlier this year.
“Glow” is the fictionalized retelling of the rise and popularity of the 1980s syndicated women’s professional wrestling promotion known as the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, aka Glow. At the screening and panel in North Hollywood, the cast and crew of the Netflix series gathered to give insight into the show’s casting process. For the amount of kicks, flips, and other attacks required in wrestling, stunt doubles just weren’t going to cut it for the majority of the action seen on screen.

With this sharp satire, director Marianna Palka continues poking and prodding at the various phases of women’s lives. In her 2008 directorial debut “Good Dick,” she took aim at dating with its anti-romantic comedy approach. Her 2017 pitch-black offering “Bitch” explored the life of a stay-at-home mother and wife who is so fed up with her treatment by her cheating husband and misbehaving kids that she begins acting like a vicious dog.

Setting up a cultural clash between two 40-something college pals, their partners, and a surrogate, Marianna Palka’s black comedy Egg, like her previous horror/comedy Bitch, sets its aim squarely on the patriarchy and the norms of motherhood. Written by Risa Mickenberg and mostly set entirely within the walls of a Brooklyn loft, Egg uses the traditional form of the sitcom to explore the life choices of free spirit artist Tina (Alysia Reiner) and Karen (Christina Hendricks), the wife of a business woman who isn’t as prepared to engage with “motherhood” as a political statement as her friend. Karen’s partner is a sports-obsessed alpha male, Don (David Alan Basche), a real estate developer who’s uncomfortable in this un-gentrified corner of Brooklyn. Tina’s husband Wayne (Gbenga Akinnagbe) is a freelancer comfortable rocking a “patriarchy is a bitch” t-shirt while biking around with Tina.

Casually cruel, two old art-school friends face off in Egg, a small-scale satirical drama about motherhood, female friendship and marriage. Tina (Alysia Reiner), who is having a child via a surrogate, tells the pregnant Karen (Christina Hendricks) that she couldn’t stand having someone hanging off her breast all day. Karen retaliates that being pregnant makes her feel like a celebrity, and that she’s sorry for people who don’t have children. With a great deal of daring and more modest accomplishment, director Marianna Palka (the 2017 Sundance film Bitch) and first-time screenwriter Risa Mickenberg confront and undermine the cliches of the...

Filmmaker Marianna Palka has spent the past decade of her career dipping into various genres and finding the space to tell intimate stories in each, from her debut dramatic romance “Good Dick” to last year’s biting midnight offering “Bitch,” and her latest film only continues that trend. “Egg” shows the Scottish actor-director’s continuing ability to ground her films with strong character work and a buoyant sense of humor.
Written by first-time screenwriter Risa Mickenberg, the movie follows a pair of mismatched pals whose conflicting ideas about motherhood screw up an ordinary dinner party in unexpected ways. Starring Christina Hendricks and Alysia Reiner (who also produced the film) as old friends from art school whose paths diverged, the actresses maintain the uneasy chemistry of two people who used to know each other very well, and aren’t quite sure how to rekindle their bond. Receiving Risa Mickenberg’s script for Egg—premiering this week in Tribeca—director Marianna Palka had an instant, strong reaction to the material, recognizing something that had the potential to be really special.
“David [Alan Basche] and Alysia [Reiner] sent me the script, and I was, I think, 19 pages into the script when I said I wanted to do it, because I realized it was going to change the world.
