My Son’s a Queer (But What Can You Do?), playwright/performer Rob Madge’s acclaimed West End play, has canceled its imminent Broadway run.
Producers say that the production will open on Broadway next season instead of this (very crowded) spring as previously announced. Theater and dates to be announced at a later date.
No reason was stated for the postponement. All purchased tickets will be refunded.
The one-person production was intended to begin a 16-week run with previews at Broadway’s Lyceum Theatre starting on February 27, and an opening night having been slated for March 12.
No fewer than 18 Broadway productions are now scheduled to open before the current theater season ends with the openings of both Mother Play and The Great Gatsby on April 25. Nearly all of the productions begin performances in the weeks from mid-March to late April.

Aw, Will & Grace! You shouldn’t have! Already this year, the revival had given us everything we could have hoped for (its existence) and more (its fabulousness). And on top of that, Tuesday it presented us with “A Gay Olde Christmas,” a holiday episode spiked with just enough optimistic perspective to add a little ho ho ho to our ha ha ha.

Screwball comedies work when two mismatched people just happened to have each other’s missing parts. They only really click when they’re together. John Patrick’s Shanley’s “The Portuguese Kid” is all about a man and woman who are mismatched from the get-go and never click to make a complete couple. In more ways than one, “The Portuguese Kid,” which opened Tuesday at Mtc’s City Center Stage 1, isn’t classic screwball. Shanley, who also directs, has attempted to write a warm-hearted farce. But where the heart ought to be there’s nothing but the shifting gears of...

Nicolas Cage. Willem Dafoe. Paul Schrader. Together, on the big screen, as God and nature intended. The trio have teamed up for Schrader’s latest crime thriller, a heist-centric feature called “Dog Eat Dog” that, by all accounts, is as wild a film as one could hope for. The film debuted as the Closing Night feature of Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight, and is now cruising towards its theatrical rollout.
The film is an adaptation of Eddie Bunker’s novel of the same name, a crime thriller that marks Schrader’s own return to the other side of the camera after decades of writing and directing. The film is a violent, darkly comic look at the one-last-heist movie trope that also includes the talents of Louisa Krause, Omar Dorsey, John Patrick and Melissa Bolona. The film reunites Schrader and Cage, who most recently went through one hell of a Hollywood nightmare with...

The first thing you need to understand about the protagonist of Alissa Nutting’s wildly unsettling and wonderfully written 2013 novel “Tampa” is that she’s a monster. While Celeste Price — accurately described as “smoldering” in the book’s official synopsis — is physically stunning (and damn does she work for it), her emotional and psychological landscape is so diseased that whatever cinematic project springs forth from the material will likely look and feel more like a film about bloodthirsty vampires or Frankenstein’s creation or the abominable snowman or something similarly driven by lust and rage than any sort of dramatic offering about overcoming life’s harsh realities.
No one overcomes anything in “Tampa.” No one gets over anything.
“Tampa,” despite a premise that seems tailor-made to be turned into a prestige feature (perhaps in the vein of “Precious”?) or at least a Lifetime-ready movie of the week (think “Mother, May I Sleep With Danger?...

Harmony Korine has hardly been inactive as of late, but the fact that it’s been more than three years since Spring Breakers‘ release — four since its festival premiere — breeds a sense of waiting among devotees. (It doesn’t help that his stacked picture, The Trap, fell through not long before shooting was to commence.) The wait, or at least that sense of stasis, may very well be reaching its end: The Playlist got word that Korine, speaking during a Q & A with the Miami Beach Cinematheque, has announced movement on Tampa, which adapts a debut novel penned by Alissa Nutting. And, boy, does it sound right up the man’s alley.
Its Lolita-esque, Florida-set tale concerns Celeste, a middle-school teacher who finds herself deeply attracted to Jack Patrick, a 14-year-old student. As will be noted many a time, Slate‘s 2013 countdown of the year’s best novels ended their...

Harmony Korine has never hidden himself or his work from controversy, and now he looks to be out and out courting it with a new project he’s reportedly lining up.
Per The Playlist, “during a Q&A last night at the Miami Beach Cinematheque, Korine revealed he’s working on an adaptation of Alissa Nutting‘s controversial and acclaimed novel, ‘Tampa.'” Much like the recent indie outing “A Teacher,” the film follows a young female teacher who seduces a much younger student. While Hannah Fiddell’s beautifully drawn film was more focused on the emotional fallout of the relationship, Nutting’s book is much more sharp, charged and, frankly, just plain dangerous.

By all accounts, Paul Schrader and Nicolas Cage’s most recent collaboration turned out more favorably than their last. While “Dying of the Light” ended up being disavowed by both director and star after studio meddling, “Dog Eat Dog” closed this year’s edition of the Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes, and Schrader has told Indiewire‘s Anne Thompson that he “got to make the film [he] wanted.” Watch the trailer for that film below.

Every year, American Theatre magazine publishes a list of the country’s most-produced playwrights. It makes sense that Ayad Akhtar topped the latest edition: His award-winning plays, many performed in New York and one (Disgraced) on Broadway, are compelling and topical and fairly easy to mount. Familiar names including August Wilson, Tennessee Williams, and Arthur Miller (in his centenary year) filled out most of the rest of the top ten — except for a writer, tied for seventh spot with John Patrick Shanley, I’d never heard of before: Lauren Gunderson. Based in California, Gunderson has several plays in active circulation; they’ve had a total of more than 70 productions around the country in the last few years, virtually none here. That anomaly has now been corrected with the arrival at 59E59 of her most popular work, the 2011 drama I and You, in a production from the Merrimack Repertory Theatre of...

Fully realizing its underdog appeal, the cheeky musical A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder slayed the competition this morning with a whopping 10 Tony nominations, including nods for both of its tireless leading men, Jefferson Mays and Bryce Pinkham. Neil Patrick Harris’ return to Broadway after a decade yielded him his first-ever Tony nomination for the celebrated revival of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, which netted an impressive eight nods. (Had it been eligible as a new musical, Hedwig probably would have easily tied Guide, as score and book would have been slam dunks). Trailing these shows with seven...

John Patrick Ryan, who goes by the name Jack, isn't just any Jack Ryan sharing a name with the Tom Clancy creation who returns to movie theaters this weekend with Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. This Jack Ryan is a professor of English at the U.S. Naval Academy — the same military facility where the fictional Jack Ryan teaches in the novel Patriot Games and its 1992 film adaptation starring Harrison Ford. When Vulture learned of the life-imitates-art situation going on down in Annapolis, we reached out to the real Ryan in the hopes that he'd want to discuss the bizarre coincidence. Luckily, after pointing out that, despite sharing surface similarities with Tom Clancy's creation, his days are filled with a lot less drama, Ryan agreed to talk about how sharing a name with a famous fictional character has affected his life. How aware of Jack Ryan have you been during...

Before he was collaborating with the Fine Brothers, Smosh, and Shane Dawson, and starring in MyMusicShow, a series funded by YouTube’s $100 million dollar channel initiative, John Patrick “Jack” Douglass (a.k.a. Jacksfilms) struck gold with The Wtf Blanket, a parody of a late night television commercial about the Snuggie: a fleece, body-length blanket with sleeves. Though not his virgin video effort, the 1:45 clip scored over 20 million views and set the tone for his future films: So what can we learn from a film student who used YouTube to kickstart his filmmaking career? Do-It-Yourself or die trying. Back in 2009, American University senior Jack Douglass lived off-campus in a small attic with several friends and was so broke he was living off of Ramen Noodle packages. We don’t mean the noodles, we mean the actual packages. So he found a Snuggies commercial online and redubbed it with his own audio commentary.

The new iconic superhero, Cavill, is fairly unknown actor (for me at least). He was considered for the part of blockbuster roles of Batman, James Bond and even the previous version of Superman. The young performer is perhaps best known for playing the character of Charles Brandon in The Tudors.

Slumdog Millionaire continued its winning streak this awards season, with Simon Beaufoy winning the 2009 Writers Guild of America award this evening for adapted screenplay. Dustin Lance Black won the award for best original screenplay for Milk. Slumdog has already won DGA, SAG, PGA and Golden Globe awards, and is a multi-award favorite for the Oscars. Milk has won SAG and PGA awards and is also a strong Oscar contender in multiple categories.
On the television side, awards went to the writers of Mad Men (drama), 30 Rock (comedy), Recount and John Adams in long-form categories, and In Treatment, Breaking Bad, and The Simpsons in various other fields. Controversially, among other awards was one for videogame writing (to Star Wars: The Force Unleashed). Some publishers declined to submit their titles for consideration, viewing the award as primarily an organizing tool for a guild seeking to gain a foothold in a non-unionized sector.

Patrick McGoohan died Tuesday in Los Angeles after a short illness, his son-in-law, film producer Cleve Landsberg, said. He was 80.
Patrick Joseph McGoohan was born March 19, 1928 in Astoria, Queens, NY, raised in Ireland and the UK. He rose to fame in the British film and TV industry by starring in the 1960s television series Danger Man (renamed Secret Agent when exported to the Us) playing John Drake, a role which made him the highest paid actor in England at the time.
McGoohan won two Emmys for his work on the Peter Falk detective drama Columbo, and more recently appeared as King Edward Longshanks in the 1995 Mel Gibson film Braveheart. He portrayed the father (and predecessor) of the Phantom in the 1996 movie.
But he was most famous as the character known only as Number Six in The Prisoner, a sci-fi tinged 1960s British series in which a former unnamed spy is...

Clearly defined lines between good and evil are the floorplans for most dramas. Even if we don't discover these boundaries by the end of a film, ultimately knowing these delineations help us process a story much easier. It gives us clarity and closure. But total uncertainty can also prove a cinematic comfort - that is if the characters causing the confusion are as well executed as they are in Doubt. Though not remarkable across the board, John Patrick Shanely's play-turned-film is pound-for-pound the best acted film of 2008, with riveting performances from Meryl Streep, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams and Viola Davis. Sister Aloysius (Streep) is principal of the school and all-around "dragon lady", protector of tradition and opponent of gum chewing and ballpoint pens. Father Flynn (Hoffman) on the other hand favors modernization of the church and a closeness with the students. The two are at odds when Sister James...

- #8. DoubtDirector/Writer:John Patrick ShanleyProducers: Scott Rudin (Revolutionary Road, Stop Loss, Margaret)Distributor: Miramax Films The Gist: Written by Shanley, this is based on the Off Broadway's Manhattan Theater Club play. Set in 1964, "Doubt" centers on a nun who confronts a priest after suspecting him abusing a black student. He denies the charges, and much of the play's quick-fire dialogue tackles themes of religion, morality and authority. Fact: Shanley wrote "Moonstruck" and both wrote and directed "Joe Versus the Volcano". See It: Philip Seymour Hoffman will play another one of those uneasy characters while Meryl Streep and Amy Adams complete the tragi-drama bill. Looks delicous. Release Date/Status?: I'm not sure if this opens in select cities or wide, but this is pegged with a December 12th release. ...
