Since 1938, Superman has dominated countless comic books, inspired a legion of fans, and appeared on the big and small screen to varying degrees of success. Adorned in blue tights and a red cape, the Man of Steel is a traditional hero in every sense of the word: morally sound, full of hope, and never too busy for any task, great or small. He's a Boy Scout who stands for truth, justice, and the American Way, an ideology that contrasts sharply against today's darker generation of heroes like Batman and Spider-Man.
But that hasn't stopped producers from trying their hand at blockbuster success with the big guy. Richard Donner's "Superman: The Movie," the grandfather of all superhero films, remains the most successful entry, critically and commercially, while Bryan Singer's "Superman Returns" and Zack Snyder's "Man of Steel" trilogy divided critics and audiences alike. Soon, James Gunn steps to the plate with "Superman Legacy,...

Last weekend, on Mother's Day of all days, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore celebrated its 50th anniversary. The occasion calls for some acknowledgment here at The Film Experience, where actressexual Oscar obsessives abound. After all, Ellen Burstyn won the Best Actress race at the 47th Academy Awards, triumphing over what could be described as the greatest lineup in the category's history. Along with the eventual victor, AMPAS nominated Diahann Carroll in Claudine, Faye Dunaway in Chinatown, Valerie Perrine in Lenny, and Gena Rowlands in A Woman Under the Influence. They might have also nominated Liv Ullmann in Scenes from a Marriage had she been eligible, but we'll get there in time.
As Faye Dunaway presents a new doc at Cannes, the stars have aligned to relitigate the 1974 Best Actress race. Are you ready? Let's go…...

James Gunn’s Son of Jor-El reboot, Superman: Legacy, has cast Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen and Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher.
There’s been a steady trickle of casting news since those strikes finally rumbled to a close a few weeks ago, and it’s clear that James Gunn’s upcoming DC debut, Superman: Legacy, is rapidly taking shape. Only yesterday (that being 22nd November), it was announced that Nicholas Hoult is to play criminal mastermind Lex Luthor, for example.
We’ve now learned that Hoult will be joined by some other familiar faces. Deadline has revealed that Sara Sampaio is to play Eve Teschmacher, Lex Luthor’s assistant and potential love interest.
In the role of Jimmy Olsen (per The Hollywood Reporter), The Daily Planet’s gee-whiz photographer, is Skyler Gisondo, who you may have seen in the likes of Licorice Pizza and TV’s Santa Clarita Diet.

Clearly wanting to get a move on with Superman: Legacy (not shocking given the ticking clock of its 2025 release), James Gunn has been busy adding new cast members to his next superhero outing, which also carries the burden of launching the big screen vision for his DC Studios. The latest recruits for the film are Skyler Gisondo, who will play Jimmy Olsen, and Sara Sampaio, who is taking the role of Eve Teschmacher (:a[the latter news broken by Deadline]{href='https://deadline.com/2023/11/superman-legacy-sara-sampaio-as-eve-teschmacher-1235632216/' }). Here’s more casting news for Superman: Legacy!
James Gunn’s upcoming film is an important anchor on the proposed restart of the DC film continuity. Gunn and his DC CEO partner Peter Safran have the daunting task of attempting to win over the loyal fans of the Dceu universe who have felt skeptical about the overhauling of the shared universe and mourn the ending of their favorite interpretations of the past few years. Recently, Gunn posted a photo of his production office that showcases a wall full of art from Superman: For All Seasons, and fans got a glimpse of David Corenswet as he works his way to a Superman build in a photo posted by his trainer.
Now, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that James Gunn found his Jimmy Olsen in Skyler Gisondo, known for his work on HBO’s The Righteous Gemstones. In addition to Gisondo’s casting,...

Julian Barry, Oscar-nominated screenwriter of the 1974 Lenny Bruce biopic “Lenny” starring Dustin Hoffman, has died at the age of 92, his daughter announced to The New York Times.
Born in the Bronx and a graduate of Syracuse, Barry got his start in showbiz on Broadway as an actor and stage manager, most notably in Orson Welles’ 1955 production of Shakespeare’s “King Lear.”
In 1969, Columbia Pictures approached Barry about writing a biopic about the life of stand-up comedian Lenny Bruce, who had died of a morphine overdose three years prior. Bruce accepted, but the project fell through as Columbia fast-tracked other projects.
Not wanting to give up on the script, Barry repurposed it as a stage play and brought it to Broadway in 1971 with “Hair” director Tom O’Horgan and with Cliff Gorman as Lenny Bruce. The play “Lenny” was a success, with Gorman winning a Tony Award for for his performance.

Julian Barry, whose 1971 Broadway play and 1974 movie, both titled Lenny and telling the story of legendary comic Lenny Bruce, died Tuesday at his home in Beverly Hills. He was 92.
His death was reported to The New York Times by his daughter Julia Barry, who said he died in his sleep and had been under medical care for congestive heart failure and late-stage kidney disease.
Although most widely known for his highly influential Bruce projects, which earned considerable acclaim for the writer and his title stars — Cliff Gorman on stage, Dustin Hoffman on screen — Barry’s career extended to other projects that caught the public’s attention in their day. He wrote Rhinoceros, the 1974 film adaptation of Eugène Ionesco’s play starring Gene Wilder and Zero Mostel, a movie that has grown somewhat in esteem since its initial critical dismissal, and the 1978 Faye Dunaway vehicle Eyes of Laura Mars, which has not.

Valerie Perrine, the beloved actress who played Eve Teschmacher in the first two Superman movies, is proving to be an inspiration far outside the superhero genre. Perrine was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2015 but remains in good spirits, challenging herself to continue the fight.
In a wonderful profile of Valerie Perrine in The Hollywood Reporter that is both uplifting and, at times, sad, they note that the actress has found hope not just in herself but those that have stuck through the hardest times to support her. One key figure is Stacey Souther, who is nearly 30 years her junior and she has known for nearly a decade. Souther even directed a recent documentary about Perrine titled Valerie. On his continued friendship, he said, “I’m sure people are like, ‘Why does he do it?’ It’s weird to hear the question to me because I’m like, ‘Why wouldn’t you do it?...

Valerie Perrine has a knack for cheating death.
At 25, Perrine — best known for playing Miss Teschmacher, girlfriend to Gene Hackman’s Lex Luthor in 1978’s Superman — was working in Las Vegas as a topless dancer in the Lido de Paris revue at the Stardust Hotel.
She met a charming guy in the lounge who said he was a hairstylist to the stars. They began dating. He invited Perrine to an intimate dinner party in L.A.’s Benedict Canyon. She found an understudy, but the understudy fell ill, and Perrine was forced to perform.
The party she missed would go down in infamy: It was the one in which the Manson Family slaughtered six people, including Sharon Tate and Jay Sebring — Perrine’s new hairstylist boyfriend.
Then, when she was 32, having shot to movie stardom as a thinking-woman’s bombshell, she boarded a small plane to the San Sebastian Film Festival.

Pairing wine with movies! See the trailers and hear the fascinating commentary for these movies and many more at Trailers From Hell. This week, we examine some films which border on the border.
The stars are here in The Border – Jack Nicholson, Harvey Keitel, Valerie Perrine, Warren Oates – in a noirish 1982 film about the southern US border. You know, the one that’s leaking like a sieve? Lie. The one that needs a big, beautiful wall? Big lie. The one that’s actually a river for about 2,000 miles? Truth.
Nicholson is an Ins agent, one of the guys who patrols the border to keep us safe from those tired, poor, wretched huddled masses yearning to breathe free. Keitel, well, he and Oates are the dark side. You probably saw that one coming.
The soundtrack is really worth a listen, with a score by Ry Cooder and other borderesque tunes...

Directed by Tony Richardson, this 1982 “neo-noir” stars Jack Nicholson as Charlie Smith, a border agent up to his neck in a human smuggling scheme run by his glad-handing partner played by Harvey Keitel. The fine cast is rounded out by Warren Oates and Valerie Perrine, but it’s Nicholson who shines in one of his best performances. Ry Cooder’s plaintive score is a striking counterpoint to the film’s gritty atmosphere.

If you know anything about Wolverine, you know this: he’s the best at what he does, but what he does isn’t very nice. And if you know anything about Hugh Jackman, you know this: he’s (among the) best at what he does, and what he does is very crowdpleasing.
So it’s great that he’s back as Wolverine for Deadpool 3, right? After all, Jackman and Ryan Reynolds have made it clear that their adventure, set years before Logan, won’t undo Logan’s sacrifice. And anyway, if you don’t like dead superheroes coming back to life, then X-Men—whose roster includes multiple characters whose defining feature is cheating death—may not be for you.
But despite the initial excitement of seeing a fan-favorite one last time, asking Jackman to don the Canucklehead’s mutton chops once again presents serious problems for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Dustin Hoffman has the jazzy delivery of the ill-fated comedian down to a tee and Valerie Perrine gives a touching performance as his hapless wife but the real star of Lenny might be director Bob Fosse himself. His electrified portrayals of the seedy strip joints of the fifties, filmed in luminous black and white by Bruce Surtees, rival Scorsese’s own fervid fascination with the seedier side of Times Square in Taxi Driver. Perrine won Best Actress at the 1975 Cannes Film Festival.

Luke Kirby plays comedian Lenny Bruce on the Amazon comedy “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” He won an Emmy last year for his performance in Season 2.
Kirby recently spoke with Gold Derby senior editor Susan Wloszczyna about his research process for playing Bruce, his big moments with Midge (Rachel Brosnahan) in Season 3 and whether he will be back for the fourth season. Watch the exclusive interview above and read the complete transcript below.
SEEWill Luke Kirby (‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’) go 2-for-2 at Emmys for Best Comedy Guest Actor?
Gold Derby: Last year you won a Guest Actor Emmy and you beat out the likes of Robert De Niro and Matt Damon on “SNL.” When I watched your acceptance speech, you seemed rather calm about it. Or was that just an act?

Luke Kirby, who continues his role as the taboo-flaunting comic Lenny Bruce on Season 3 of Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” won an Emmy as Best Comedy Guest Actor last year. He managed to beat out such A-level talents as Matt Damon and Robert De Niro, who were both up for their appearances on “Saturday Night Live.”
Kirby, who is sporting a rather impressive quarantine mustache these days, was rather calm as he gave his acceptance speech onstage and offered thanks to all the right people as he read his speech off a card. Was that just an act?
In our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video above), he reveals, “I think it was likely an act. My adrenal glands have a tendency to lean towards a more laconic, lethargic tone. I think sitting there for the two hours that it took to get to that category. All the blood...

Writer’s notes: All DC Comics references imply past events. They do not indicate any criticism or suggest answerability from current management.
I’ve built my career around what I call my Studio 54 philosophy. It’s that philosophy that I’ll use to explain how those dancing on Dan Didio’s grave do so at considerable risk.
If you have not read last week’s article, please do so. If you don’t, this is gonna read strangely.
There’s no way to say this without sounding a bit full of myself, so here goes… I’m the Master Of The Universe. Yep, call me Motu if you like, but I am indeed the Master, etc. etc.
To be the Master of anything requires intelligence, the ability to reason, and self-confidence. Believe it or not, reason and self-esteem are more critical than being smart. If I had to pick one overall,...

Kurt Vonnegut’s quirky sci-fi novels didn’t always adapt well to film, but George Roy Hill’s 1972 effort is a faithful winner. The filmmaking craft used to ‘unstick’ Billy Pilgrim in time is nothing short of brilliant, highlighting the camera talent of Miroslav Ondricek and the editing skill of Dede Allen. The book even has a built-in sex angle that the film doesn’t shy away from — providing our first encounter with Valerie Perrine as a starlet kidnapped by aliens curious about human mating habits. The somber, sometimes spiritually-defeatist tone of the show represents the book well; it ought to be better known.

All-American race car mania is alive and well in this excellent Jeff Bridges movie, a true biographical story researched by Tom Wolfe. Junior Johnson needs a future beyond running moonshine for his father, and finds it climbing the rungs of success in the stock car racing game. This may be the most satisfying saga of its kind, and it helped prove that Bridges was a star.

Charlie Smith (Jack Nicholson) is a bored man. Bored with his position as an immigration enforcement officer in Los Angeles and bored with his eleven-year marriage to Marcy (Valerie Perrine) in a Sunland, CA trailer park. When Marcy boasts of a better life in a shared duplex with chum Savannah (Shannon Wilcox) and her border patrol husband Cat (Harvey Keitel) in El Paso, TX, Charlie doesn’t exactly protest the change in geography or transfer in job title. With all their possessions strapped to the roof of their car, they are welcomed with open arms. It isn’t long, however, before Charlie realizes not only the danger and utter futility of attempting to stop the migrants from making a run for los Estados Unidos regardless of the presence of the tortilla fences topped with barbed wire. Dustin Hoffman has the clipped, jazzy delivery of the ill-fated comedian down to a tee and Valerie Perrine gives a remarkably touching performance as his hapless wife but the real star of Lenny might be director Bob Fosse himself. His electrified portrayals of the seedy dives and strip joints of the fifties, both tawdry and glamorous in the luminous black and white photography of Bruce Surtees, rival Scorsese’s own fervid fascination with the seedier side of Times Square in Taxi Driver. Perrine won Best Actress at the 1975 Cannes Film Festival. Tfh is happy to welcome filmmaker Robert Weide to our line-up of stellar gurus!

This article marks Part 1 of the Gold Derby series reflecting on films that contended for the Big Five Oscars – Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Screenplay (Original or Adapted). With “A Star Is Born” this year on the cusp of joining this exclusive group of Oscar favorites, join us as we look back at the 43 extraordinary pictures that earned Academy Awards nominations in each of the Big Five categories beginning with the eight that were shut out of these top races.
At the 31st Academy Awards ceremony, “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” (1958) was well-positioned for Oscar glory. Critically acclaimed and commercially successful, the film adaptation of Tennessee Williams’ play was up in six categories, including the Big Five, plus Best Cinematography.
Instead of emerging victorious, however, the film found itself steamrolled over. It would lose Best Picture and Best Director (Richard Brooks) to the musical “Gigi” and its filmmaker,...

Tony Richardson’s look at corruption in the border patrol service is both sensational and insightful, and Jack Nicholson gives a committed performance as a downtrodden functionary who finds himself in a major moral and humanitarian catastrophe. The problem is still there today, with no consensus on the right diagnosis or solution. The action melodrama costars Harvey Keitel & Valerie Perrine, and introduces (to the U.S.) the impressive Elpidia Carrillo.

The AppleThe musical possesses a unique form of power rarely afforded to other Hollywood genres. In the words of film scholar Rick Altman, “The musical invites us to forget familiar notions of plot, psychological motivation, and causal relationships.” In contrast to other commercial genres, the musical is almost one-of-a-kind in its ability to arrest time and space, to suspend disbelief, to defy our lived understanding of human relationships and even the very conventions of filmgoing. In what other mainstream genre can fictional characters get away with looking into the camera lens so often? Dramatic logic is replaced in the Hollywood musical by spectacle and raw emotional appeal, with singing as the defining device for such purely cinematic priorities. But what happens to the musical when singing is taken out of it? This was the conundrum of the short-lived disco musical, a sub-genre that ended as soon as it began.Popular...

Silver Skies debuts on DVD, Amazon and iTunes April 4th
When Dana Jung reviewed Silver Skies here at We Are Movie Geeks, he wrote “.…. there’s no better way to spend a couple of hours than skipping down memory lane with the old friends of Silver Skies.” Read all of Dana’s review Here
And read my interview with Silver Skies director Rosemary Rodriguez Here
With humor and compassion, Silver Skies chronicles the unexpected developments that occur when a group of eccentric seniors have their lives turned upside down by the sale of their beloved apartment complex. A refreshingly original story about getting older and trying to hold tight to the American Dream, the film features a cast of much-loved screen icons: George Hamilton, Valerie Perrine, Barbara Bain, Jack McGee, Alex Rocco, Mariette Hartley, Jack Betts, and Howard Hesseman. Far from playing their usual roles, however, the actors fully inhabit...

A wonderfully understated comedy-drama, The Electric Horseman follows the story of Sonny Steele (Robert Redford), a five-time champion rodeo cowboy now turned brand spokesman for AMPco, a giant corporate firm selling 'Ranch' breakfast cereal. Steele's life has become essentially a series of advertising appearances, at which he is required to brandish a box of cereal with his face adorning it whilst wearing a garish cowboy outfit festooned with electric fairy lights. The forced smiles, autographs and constant touring are starting to crack Steele; when we meet him, he is a disillusioned, unreliable drunk, stumbling from one engagement to the next.
The film centres around a big Las Vegas convention where Steele is booked for a ride-on appearance with AMPco's prize mascot, a 12-million-dollar racehorse. Horse and rider are strapped up in purple paisley silk and electric lights, the ridiculous spectacle of which, in the capital of sensational fakery and money-worship,...

Review by Dana Jung.
Today, more than ever, with our shortened attention spans, inundation by multi-media delivery systems, and almost obsessive need for instant information, it is easy to forget the wonderful actors of the 1960s, 70s, and 80s who inspired and influenced us. So many great moments created by sometimes iconic performers live on in the movies and television of certain eras. From Mr. Spock to Archie Bunker, Annie Hall to James Bond, or Mrs. Peel to Lieutenant Columbo, these and other memorable characters fueled everything from fashion choices to sexual fantasies. That’s why the new...

I had the pleasure of speaking with writer and director Rosemary Rodriguez in midtown Manhattan two days before her film "Silver Skies" will have its United States premiere at the Woodstock Film Festival on Saturday October 3.
Rosemary Rodriguez wrote and directed the feature, "Acts of Worship, "which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, was nominated for two Independent Spirit Awards, including the John Cassavetes Award for Best Feature. Her episodic TV work includes "Empire," "The Good Wife," (where she is a regular director), "Manhattan," "Rake," "Elementary" and "Vegas." She is currently directing the new Marvel series on Netflix, "Jessica Jones."
"Silver Skies," Rosemary’s second feature, chronicles a group of seniors whose lives turn upside down when their Los Angeles apartment complex threatens to be sold out from under them.
We began our conversation talking about the evolution of "Silver Skies."
Rodriguez : It took about ten years. I ended up going to the MacDowell Colony with an outline for "Silver Skies" and wrote the script while I was there. Then, when I directed a "Law and Order" episode, I hit it off with (star) Dennis Farina and he loved the script. He helped to get the movie made. Fast forward almost two years later I called Dennis and told him we got the money. We picked the start date, and then he passed away two weeks later. I was devastated when he passed away. But then things fell in place. Fred Roos and Arthur Sarkissian came to the reading of the script, and they said, ‘let’s do this movie.’ The movie is dedicated to Dennis. He was my guardian angel.
Kouguell: In "Silver Skies," the theme of ageism is tackled straight on. The characters in this ensemble piece are threatened with the possible loss of their homes and livelihood. You describe "Silver Skies" as very personal and inspired by your parents’ aging. The characters of Nick and Phil are inspired by your father, who was a bookie in Boston, and the character, Eve, by your mother.
Rodriguez : Valerie Perrine’s character always has flowers; that was my mother. I watched my parents get old when I was still young. I saw how their relationships changed. You think logic would say life would get easier when you get older, but the emotional truth is that life still happens on its own terms. I think seniors don’t have a voice in this world. These are people who want to have sex. They want to work. They want to spend money. Make money. Have money.
Kouguell: You don’t shy away from thought-provoking issues, facing this generation, including the sexual assault of one female character and another main character’s choice she made of personal survival that causes the death of her spouse.
Rodriguez : My role model for directors is Robert Altman. His movies were a slice of life. The ironic thing about being a human being on this planet is that you have no idea what is going to happen next. The movie is real life. You’re going on a roller coaster ride; there are parts you’re laughing because life is like that, and then the rug gets pulled right out from under you.
The issues women go through, and with this female character with her husband abusing her, and feeling guilty over surviving, doing whatever she had to survive, whatever way she needed to behave was maybe ‘not as a good girl’ would, and coming to terms with that. Sexual abuse to elders is real. Elder abuse is real. I wanted to bring that issue in, as well as bring in that feminist message in there.
Kouguell: In "Silver Skies," the trepidation and excitement of newfound love is complicated by raw emotion as seen in one character’s personal and financial insecurities with a recent widow.
Rodriguez : Love doesn’t stop people at a certain age, it doesn’t stop their desires. It doesn’t matter what age we are. To work with these wonderful actors and Alex Rocco in particular -- he was just like a teenage boy when doing his scenes with Valerie Perrine, saying: “I’m used to playing killers, I’m not used to playing lovers.”
(Alex Rocco passed away July 18 of this year.)
Rodriguez : The recent memorial for Alex was on the racetrack: “Friends of Rocco” – it was the seventh race, it was dedicated to him. I loved him dearly. I miss him dearly. It was intended as a celebration of this wonderful man. His character reminds me of my dad. As I told my dad when it became clear he had to retire, I told him, “You always wanted to go out a winner.”
Kouguell: The film stars Barbara Bain, George Hamilton, Jack McGee, Valerie Perrine, Mariette Hartley, Howard Hesseman, Jack Betts, and Alex Rocco. Did they have any input into the script?
Rodriguez : They definitely did. They stuck to the script a lot. I’m a big collaborator; I want to hear what people have to say. In the film George Hamilton’s character is in the early stages of Alzheimer’s. Jack McGee’s brother, George Hamilton’s mother, and my dad, all had Alzehimer’s and we shared our respective experiences to further develop George’s character. In a way it was a tribute for George to his mother, for Jack to his brother, and mine to my father.
Kouguell: You’ve earned great success as a director on "The Good Wife." How has directing television influenced your work as a director on "Silver Skies"?
Rodriguez : I can work efficiently and quickly, and in television that’s some of the skill set that gets developed. My instincts are very sharp. The idea out there is that we’re less creative working in television, but the real truth is we’re under such pressure that we can make decisions quickly, and also go with your heart and instincts. It’s very quick and very satisfying, and of course millions of people see your work in a shorter window of time and that is opposite of a movie.
Kouguell: Currently, you are the 4th Vice President of the Directors Guild of America. Although there is more media attention on the low percentage of women directors getting work in the industry, the numbers are still not rising fast enough.
Rodriguez : The DGA works very hard and we all work hard to address the issue of diversity. It’s been a problem for many years. My involvement in the DGA is reflective of how much the DGA cares about women directors and minority directors, and wants to get us out there. It’s a benefit to the Guild. There’s a lot of content there now and opportunity for diversity. I want to be meeting with you in a few years when this isn’t an issue any more; where there are not “female directors” – that there are just great storytellers and that we don’t have to separate each other.
Kouguell: Some final words about "Silver Skies"?
Rodriguez: The way these actors enriched my life was unexpected and so profound. These are people with 50 and 60-year careers in a tough industry. These actors showed up and put their hearts in these characters. They’re artists. They were there for the love for what they do. They just loved the characters. They had beautiful chemistry together. We are part of each other’s lives. I never could give back to them what they gave to me.

Mel Gibson, whom I interviewed for Venice Magazine in late 2000, was my first real childhood hero I sat down with. If you were a Gen-x male, Mel Gibson was the closest thing we had to Paul Newman, Steve McQueen and Sean Connery: a guy's guy whom guys wanted to emulate and women wanted to copulate. If you were a guy who liked girls, the math in the previous equation was pretty simple: be like Mel. Sadly, Gibson's life has taken a very public turn for the worse in the last decade, since his personal legal and troubles stemming from a 2006 DUI arrest in Malibu were made public, one from which his image has yet to fully recover. It was an unfortunate fall from grace for a guy who literally had Hollywood, and the world, in the palm of his hand after sweeping the 1995 Oscars with his box office smash "Braveheart.
