Horror has an official first family and their last name is Adams. No not that one. You might be thinking of the Addams Family. They don’t make movies, they’re fictional characters and they’re nowhere near as cool as the Adams Family.
John Adams and Toby Poser, and their daughters Zelda and Lulu, have been making independent films as a family for over a decade under their production company Wonder Wheel Productions. The Adams Family ventured into the horror genre for the first time with their film The Hatred (2018), which tells the story of a young girl who brings a soldier back from the dead to unleash hell on earth. And just like that, they were hooked on horror.
The Adams Family’s early films like Rumblestrips (2013) and Knuckle Jack (2014), were usually case studies of outcasts, who were struggling to find some kind of normalcy and acceptance in...

The kind of movie made to stumble upon surfing cable at 2 am in a half-awake, half-intoxicated stupor, Ethan Coen’s Drive-Away Dolls aims for a lower artistic bar than anything the director (and certainly his brother) has previously approached, which accounts for much of its charm. Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke first completed the script some two decades ago––titled Drive-Away Dykes both then and now, if one goes by the end credits––and the film’s B-movie, pleasure-first appeal lies in the feeling that they simply dusted off a copy and immediately embarked on production. A slapdash narrative populated with eminently likable characters best described as joke-delivering caricatures, this marvelously queer road-trip comedy caper is a fleet-footed...

You’d think that creature horrors wouldn’t have much scope left for originality anymore. But while a darn good film that checks all the boxes when it comes to this brassy subgenre of horror is the least you’d expect from the Adams family of filmmakers, they must’ve set the bar impressively high for themselves with Hell Hole. Because Toby Poser and John Adams have done something that most of our favorites from this side of horror town haven’t quite pulled off yet. They’ve not just given us a squiggly squid monster that gives a taste of gestation to the dudes, but as shocking as this might sound, the characters in Hell Hole are actually interesting. Yup, not the type whose intrigue you’d have to imagine in order to be in denial about this gaping hole in this subgenre.

The eighth feature helmed by the nuclear Adams Family, Hell Hole once again mines from pointed genre influences for the filmmakers’ home-grown creative approach. They’ve previously explored killer carnivals, witch covens, and psychic slashers, and now they train their lens on an environmentally resonant creature feature. Following an American fracking team stationed in Serbia,...

The creative output of the Adams Family seems to be endless, and something as simple as a long road trip is enough to inspire their next big movie idea. It hasn’t even been a full rotation around the sun since the release of their last feature Where The Devil Roams, but husband and wife team John Adams and Toby Poser still somehow managed to make another, Hell Hole. The Adams proved to be experts in crafting witchy and supernatural horrors with The Deeper You Dig and Hellbender, but this time, they’re trying out something different with a creature feature far from the comforts of their home country.

Hell Hole Photo: Fantasia International Film Festival
One year on from Where The Devil Roams, Fantasia International Film Festival regulars Toby Poser and John Adams – generally known as the Adams family, though this time they don’t have their kids in tow – are back with another genre work. Hell Hole is a bit of a departure for them, filmed in Serbia and taking a distinctly irreverent approach to its subject, with lots of silliness alongside the gore. It centres on an exploratory fracking team which uncovers something unexpected buried beneath the ground, and with it an obscure cephalopod parasite which wants to make its home, specifically, inside the bodies of men.
“You really took the ‘What if men could get pregnant?’ question and ran with it,” I suggest when we catch up.
“Yeah,” says Toby, laughing. “Let's just be honest, with all this stuff that's been going on in the States,...

It’s festival season and no festival is quite the same without a new film from Team Adams. The minds who brought us Hellbender, The Deeper You Dig and Where the Devil Roams are back with something new, slimy, and a ton of fun. Having enjoyed their last few outings, I was excited to see what Hell Hole would bring. There is something unique about the Adams’ brand of low-budget filmmaking in that audiences have learned to expect the unexpected. And that continues to be the case here. Hell Hole has all of the things we have come to enjoy from this team of filmmakers - a solid story, creative filmmaking, a kick-ass soundtrack, and DIY filmmaking at its finest. But it also sees the creatives breaking new ground and trying something new.
This time around, John Adams and Toby Poser share directing duties, and co-wrote the script with Lulu Adams.

Plot: Far away, in the desolate Serbian wilderness, a U.S.-led fracking crew uncover a dormant monster gestating inside a centuries-old French soldier. Now awakened and exposed in its most dangerously fragile state, it tears through the men on the grounds in search of a new womb.
Review: There’s a certain charm to the Adams Family’s filmography, delivering unique story after unique story. And I won’t lie, there’s something sweet about a family banding together to make a horror film together. Made all the more exciting to see the strides they’ve made with each film. Hell Hole feels like the Adams leveling up their filmmaking skill to the next level. And it’s an experience you won’t soon forget.

The parasitic creature at the center of The Adams Family’s Hell Hole isn’t messing around. The second it seems its host is being threatened, it simply explodes its way out to find a new one. This means a lot of blood and gore and a couple effective jump scares––you never know how much of a threat is too much. Sometimes the beast simply wiggles a tentacle or two out of its victim’s orifices. Sometimes it stages a jail break. The only consistency is that it will take over the next, nearest male human in the hopes of finally reaching maturity.
How long will that take? Considering the movie opens in the 19th century with remnants of Napoleon’s army before reaching the present-day Serbian fracking site Emily (Poser) and John (Adams) have agreed to drill, your guess is as good as mine. If two hundred years wasn’t enough,...

With Hell Hole, the Catskills-based filmmaking collective known as the Adams family takes its first wobbly baby steps outside its homegrown horror comfort zone. Trading the group’s signature brand of lyrical, self-reflective terror for rambling, environmentalist sci-fi story set among a fracking crew living and working among industrial decay at the edge of a Balkan wilderness, the film is more interesting as an exercise in stretching genre tentacles than a satisfying narrative or artistic one-off. Still, it features enough of the cockeyed familial ruminations and loose improvisational aura for which the filmmakers have become known that their devotees will be more than pleased.

The Adams Family debuted on the scene with The Deeper You Dig and returned last year for Shudder’s Hellbender. Up next from the family – and yes, they are indeed a real family – is Where the Devil Roams, and the film is headed the theaters in November.
Yellow Veil Pictures announced today on social media to look for Where the Devil Roams in theaters on November 3. You’ll then be able to rent and buy the film on cable and digital platforms on November 7. Previously, it was reported that the film will head exclusively to Tubi.
“Set during Depression-era America, Where the Devil Roams follows a family of murderous sideshow performers as they travel the dying carnival circuit.”
Toby Poser, Zelda Adams, and John Adams star in the film, as well as write and direct.
Variety previously previewed, “Hugely ambitious, the film’s first 16 minutes packs a black and white...

Ever since their breakout indie The Deeper You Dig lit up the festival circuit in 2019, the Adams family have proven something of a horror genre sideshow for travelling fans; a one-of-a-kind mother-father-daughter filmmaking team who write, direct and star together in what is quickly becoming an impressively unusual oeuvre. Slickly, cheaply made spins on old-school genre mainstays with a fascinatingly personal angle. And their depression-era road movie Where the Devil Roams is no different – a gorgeously minimalist, micro-budget marvel of a family-driven horror.
In fact, the Adams’ latest might actually be at its most impressive when it shuns its bigger crowds and more elaborate dressing, and just leans into its absolute essentials. That is, its core unit; an unusual family band, riding across rural America, on the coattails of a travelling horror show. The team themselves – father John, daughter Zelda, and mother Toby Poser – are a uniquely tight fit as...

Welcome to Give Me the Fear, a new Frightfest 2023 preview series hosted by screenwriter Stuart Wright.
These brief, spoiler-free interviews will – across the entire series – help you to discover the kind of knowledge and experience about how to make indie horror films that they don’t teach at film school.
After looking back at the blood, sweat and tears that went into their creative successes, I ask them one last question: If you could hand pick one person to be in the audience for your Frightfest screening, who would it be and why? I think you going to love the answers this question elicits.
This episode covers Where the Devil Roams, Pandemonium (feat. Quarxx) & The Sacrifice Game (feat. Jenn Wexler)

There is something about a carnival. Something mysterious. Maybe even a tad dangerous. In the midst of a humdrum existence, a carnival feels like one of the last places left where magic may still exist. It’s here one day, gone the next. A world unto itself that sets up in new places, inviting us into its arms for one or two nights at a time, before vanishing, taking its magic along with it. It is populated by people living their lives on the edge of society; just close enough for us to see and interact with when they choose, before closing the curtain and retreating to their own little world. Performers who thrill, challenge, and play with their audience before disappearing like ghosts, leaving us behind in the ordinary world.
