- In November 2003 the Royal Palace made the announcement of his engagement to journalist Letizia Ortiz. The couple married the following year at the Cathedral of Madrid.
- He has also had a military education in the three branches of the Spanish Army.
- Was a member of the Olympic sailing team at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, during whose inauguration he appeared as a standard-bearer for the Spanish team.
