Our planet can be absolutely terrifying. From unpredictable earthquakes to monstrous storms, there’s really no shortage of ways in which our cosmic home can kill us. And yet, our species perseveres, with humanity going so far as to entertain itself by telling stories about how we can overcome – or at the very least survive – the fury of nature. In fact, these stories have become so prevalent in popular culture that disaster movies are known to be one of the most profitable genres in all of cinema, and while some audiences remain critical so-called “disaster-porn,” I’d argue that the best of these films are really about the endurance of the human spirit.

You can’t cheat death, but this directing duo is sure going to try.

Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, the filmmaking team known for their 2018 sci-fi thriller Freaks, have nabbed the coveted gig of directing Final Destination 6, the relaunch of the New Line’s Grand Guignol horror franchise.

Craig Perry, the original franchise producer, is producing with Sheila Hanahan Taylor. Jon Watts, the director behind the Tom Holland Spider-Man movies, is also producing alongside Dianne McGunigle (FX’s Atlanta).

Watts also wrote the treatment for the relaunch. Guy Busick and Lori Evans Taylor, whose credits include Ready or Not and the relaunched Scream franchise, are writing the script. The previous Final Destination movie was released over 10 years ago, in 2011.

On average French films allocate under 3% of their total budget on VFX, according to a report on employment in the French VFX sector presented at Pids Enghien in Paris by the French film and TV agency Cnc.

The report, produced with market research firm Audiens, found that for films budgeted at over €15 million ($17 million), the VFX spend rises to an average 11.8% of budget.

The data suggests that the number of French films using VFX has increased over the past decade. In 2020, 108 of 131 French feature films had recourse to VFX expenses in their overall budget. Total VFX expenditure for all French films in 2020 was estimated to be $18 million.

The Cnc has not yet disclosed data on the VFX spend of top French titles released in 2021, but top titles included “Eiffel,” which presented a case study at Pids Enghien.

Sentient and Endurance Media are producing and will finance the project. Steven Quale (Final Destination 5), who co-directed Aliens Of The Deep with James Cameron and started out as second unit director on Titanic and Avatar, will direct the high seas adventure.

Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan will write the script for the sixth installment in New Line Cinema’s “Final Destination” franchise, the studio announced Friday.

The films have grossed almost $700 million worldwide since the first film’s debut in 2000. The “Final Destination” franchise is one of the longest running at New Line, where horror is a specialty.

Melton and Dunstan won “Project Greenlight” Season 3 and are best known for writing four of the “Saw” movies (movies four to seven). Their upcoming projects include “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark,” “The Reckoning” and an Untitled Christmas Horror Project.

Those in need of a shot of testosterone for Christmas just might make do with “American Renegades,” though it’s unlikely this knucklehead adventure will do much better Stateside than in the various territories it’s played over the last 18 months. Release-delayed from the start, the international co-production offers a particularly dumb kind of gung-ho Ugly Americanism that would have seemed odd for a primarily European enterprise when filming started in early 2015 — and seems even more so given political shifts since.

Having so far purportedly earned back just a tiny fraction of a budget said to be in the high eight figures, this tale of Navy SEALs seeking hidden Nazi gold during the Balkan Wars a quarter-century ago was a terrible idea on many levels. Still, it’s smoothed over to an extent by the sheer glossy expense of big if uninspired action-movie packaging. EuropaCorp is launching on 10 U.S.

“Aliens of the Deep” director Steven Quale is set to direct aquatic thriller “Alphas,” based on the screenplay by Frank Hannah. Finance and sales are by Voltage Pictures.

The story sees a school of great white sharks terrorize a coastal town. The town’s only hope is a damaged killer whale who has been in solitary confinement for years after killing its trainer.

Regardless of your feelings towards Luc Besson’s most recent cinematic output, nobody can deny that a production carrying his name can usually be relied upon to bring something new, if not always coherent, to the action genre. In the case of Renegades, a film co-written by Besson and directed by Steven Quale, you might be hard pressed to find anything positive to say about this lazily put together, badly acted, and above all, poorly judged production.

Following a group of Navy Seals as they make their way through war-torn Bosnia in the 90s, Renegades not only offers a historically inaccurate account of the events, it also manages to infuriate further by presenting a ludicrous storyline held together by a series of poorly executed action set pieces.

UK distributor Signature Entertainment has snapped up a raft of Us and international titles including Sylvester Stallone and Dave Bautista action-thriller Escape Plan 2: Hades from Highland.

The sequel to the 2013 Arnie/Stallone action title, which grossed $140m worldwide, is currently in production and set for release in 2018.

In Hades, Stallone’s character Ray Breslin is called on to organize another for-hire security force but when one of his team, the wing chun master Shu (Xiaoming Huang), goes missing – inside a computerized techno-terror battle-maze known as Haze, where human combatants brawl like beasts – Breslin goes back into the secret lock-up to save his friend.

Bautista co-stars as a deadly acquaintance of Breslin’s alongside Jaime King, Jesse Metcalfe and 50 Cent.

From Europacorp the company has picked up heist thriller Renegades, co-written by filmmake-producer Luc Besson and The Magnificent 7 and The Expendables 2 writer Richard Wenk.

After two years, Stx Entertainment has “Bad Moms,” “The Gift” … and more than a half-dozen other titles that range from near misses (“Desierto”) to outright flops (“The Bye Bye Man”). Never mind, said motion picture group chairman Adam Fogelson at his studio’s CinemaCon presentation Tuesday. He’s more than confident that his studio’s next chapter — or as he called it, “Stx 2.0” — is filled with hitmakers.

I've got a fun trailer here for you to watch for a film called Renegades. EuropaCorp has released a brand new trailer and poster for Renegades. The film stars J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) & Sullivan Stapleton (300: Rise of an Empire), is Directed by Steven Quale (Final Destination 5 and Into the Storm) and is an original story written by Richard Wenk & Luc Besson (Taken and Lucy).

Renegades is about a team of Navy SEALs on assignment in war-torn Europe who discover a treasure of gold at the bottom of a lake -- rumored to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars.  In an effort to help the locals, they go rogue and engineer a heist to retrieve the gold and return it to its rightful owners. Belga Films Fund (Bff) has raised more than $5.6m (€5m) for Ben Stassen’s new animated feature, The Son Of Bigfoot.

The Belgian tax credit company was launched last year by production and distribution outfit Belga Films, which will release The Son Of Bigfoot in Benelux late summer 2017. The total budget is undersood to be $26m (€23m).

Studiocanal will release in France, UK, Germany and Australia/New Zealand.

Produced by Studiocanal’s nWave Pictures and Waterman Ent. (Alvin and the Chipmunks), the film centres on a teenage outsider who uncovers the truth that he is the son of the mysterious Bigfoot and as such has super powers, which he needs to save his family.

Sullivan Stapleton is disappointed Kill Me Three Times had a multi-platform release in Australia and limited theatrical exposure in the Us, but relieved that Cut Snake will finally open in cinemas this Thursday.

The actor is proud of both films but accepts that the cost of releasing films theatrically means it is increasingly difficult for distributors to secure screens and risk significant sums on P&A.

Studio Babelsberg’s co-production of the upcoming Captain America sequel and Steven Quale’s action film The Lake are to benefit from new German funding specifically targeted at VFX studios.

The new opportunities came after the Munich-based regional film fund Fff Bayern extended its dedicated international co-production funding programme to include support for VFX producers based in Bavaria.

According to Ilse Aigner, Bavaria’s Minister for Economics and Media, Energy and Technology, the additional funding would support local companies “in this difficult international competitive market”, bolster Bavaria’s position as a VFX hub and, simultaneously, benefit the overall sector as the measure will bring additional productions to Bavaria.

VFX studio Trixter was awarded $495,000 (€450,000) for the virtual shoot of Captain America: Civil War in order to begin work on the production from the end of August.

The 300: Rise Of An Empire star will lead the cast with Into The Storm's Steven Quale at the helm, Deadline reports.

The Lake follows a group of Navy SEALs on their journey to solve an old mystery, while they uncover an immense secret treasure in a lake in war-torn Serbia.

The thriller has been penned by Taken scribe Luc Besson with The Equalizer screenwriter Richard Wenk.

Stapleton will also be starring in the Greg Berlanti series Blindspot for NBC.

It was also announced recently that the final series of Stapleton's military drama Strike Back will air this summer.

Luc Besson has developed something of a reputation for finding people you might not think would fit into action franchises – Liam Neeson, Scarlett Johansson etc. – and finding successful ways to do just that. “The Hobbit” star Richard Armitage has joined the cast of NBC’s “Hannibal,” a spokesperson for the network told TheWrap.

He will play Francis Dolarhyde, a.k.a. the Tooth Fairy, on Season 3 of the psychological horror series, adapted from Thomas Harris’s popular novels “Hannibal,” “Hannibal Rising” and “The Red Dragon.” He is slated for a six-episode run.

Exclusive: After EuropaCorp generated another hit in Taken 3, Luc Besson and Christophe Lambert’s company has hired Barry Sonnenfeld to direct Nine Lives, a high-concept comedy scripted by Daniel Antoniazzi and Ben Shiffrin. The film is about a workaholic businessman who has to figure his way out of a dilemma: A terrible accident leaves him trapped in the body of the family cat. Pic’s being shepherded by EuropaCorp U.S. film president Lisa Ellzey.

The film will be financed and produced by EuropaCorp and will be one of the early releases through Red, the distribution pipeline that EuropaCorp co-owns with Relativity. Based on George Wallace and Don Keith's novel "Firing Point," the story follows a renegade Russian military leader who pushes the U.S. to the brink of a nuclear confrontation.

Cut off from all outside communication, a submarine commander and an elite Navy special forces unit are all that stand between the Russian assault and all-out war.

Campbell is just the latest name attached to the helm of the project, and this would mark his first film since "Green Lantern".

Having worked with James Cameron back on The Abyss, their relationship has meant Quale’s involvement on multiple projects including Titanic and a co-director credit on the documentary Aliens Of The Deep.
