He was offered the part of Colonel Lethbridge-Stewart in The Web of Fear: Episode 3 (1968) after the original casting, David Langton, dropped out.

He was a classically-trained English character actor, trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama, between 1948 and 1950. For ten years, worked in repertory. In 1960, joined the Royal Court Theatre. Subsequently associated for ten seasons with the Royal Shakespeare Company.
