Stars: Mandy Moore, Claire Holt, Matthew Modine, Chris Johnson, Yani Gellman, Santiago Segura | Written by Johannes Roberts, Ernest Riera | Directed by Johannes Roberts
Directed by Johannes Roberts (The Other Side of the Door), this ladies-in-peril shark thriller might lack the bite of last year’s The Shallows, but it delivers enough of the requisite suspense moments to ensure that it succeeds on its own B-movie terms.
Mandy Moore (TV’s This Is Us) and Claire Holt (TV’s The Vampire Diaries) play Lisa and Kate, two vacationing sisters who have come to Mexico to help Lisa get over being recently dumped by her boyfriend. (In an unexpected echo of Amy Schumer’s Snatched, Kate is a last-minute replacement for the now ex-boyfriend, which kind of makes you wish Schumer and Hawn had thrown in some sharks to liven things up a bit).
Down in the dumps because her boyfriend had said she was boring,...

47 Metres Down – that’s 154 feet, to you and me – is a tense and enjoyable shark flick, but it squanders some of its potential...
For a film wound so tightly around its central premise – a ‘swim with sharks’ cage experience goes badly wrong – 47 Meters Down does an admirable amount of character work. Between that and the close quarters conceit, it manages to add something relatively unique to the sharks-kill-people cinematic subgenre.
Mandy Moore, carrying over so much goodwill from the adorable TV drama This Is Us, stars as Lisa, a recently single worrywart living in the shadow of her cooler sister (Kate, played by Claire Holt of The Vampire Diaries and The Originals). Right from the visually playful opening scene, the pair strike up a genuine-seeming rapport, which carries the film through some wobbles later on.
Kate is a cocksure thrill-seeker, and Lisa is in a slump, reeling over her ex.

Back in the summer of 2016, Johannes Roberts’ 47 Meters Down readied itself for a guppy-sized VOD release (renamed Into The Deep). Then, without warning, his bottom-feeding nightmare was yanked from distribution. Why? Because Byron Allen’s Entertainment Studios purchased the rights and organized a 2017 theatrical campaign through Freestyle Releasing.
Jaume Collet-Serra’s The Shallows proved that damsels-in-aquatic-distress could turn a profit, so why not gamble on 47 Meters Down? Two girls, one cage. Underwater anxiety flashes some pretty ferocious chompers when Roberts’ beasts are in peak aggression mode, benefiting from cinema screens versus home streaming. Kudos on the power-play, Mr. Allen. Maybe some more studios can start replicating your courage?

If my calculations are correct, 47 meters comes out to 154 feet. Being trapped in a shark cage at that depth surely isn’t pleasant, and neither, it turns out, is watching a movie about such an ordeal: “47 Meters Down” sinks rather than swims, even if there are a few buoyant moments along the way.
Mandy Moore stars in Johannes Roberts’ entry in the vaunted shark-thriller genre, which finds her on vacation in Mexico. Her motivation is of the male variety, of course: Lisa was recently left by her boyfriend for being “too boring” and envisions this south-of-the-border excursion as a means of proving her ex wrong via exciting selfies of her living her best life. Since sitting poolside and late-night dance parties are totally basic, she eventually relents when her younger, more outgoing sister Kate (Claire Holt) suggests they go swimming with the sharks.
