If you are going to do a so-called “hilarious” comedy dealing with cancer you better know how to do it. Unfortunately, writer/director Jennifer Cram, for her first feature film in those jobs, does not knock it out of the park.

Sick Girl which stars Nina Dobrev as Wren, a bit of a mess of a 30ish woman whose spur-of-the-moment little white lie about having cancer spirals out of control, would need a satirist along the lines of an Adam McKay to actually pull off this misbegotten comedy which is simply more cringe-inducing than funny, and Cram, whose previous work has been in Casting just can’t find the right tone to make it work. The concept of turning successful short films into full-length features is quite popular. Although, for the horror genre, it fails to work in most cases. While the short may be riveting enough and deserving of rounds of applause, the film that comes out of it seems stretched out and vapid. The “evil twin” school of psychological metaphor has been a frequent device in horror fiction, and its familiarity does not much benefit the very literal-minded “Appendage.” Writer-director Anna Zlokovic’s first feature centers on a young Manhattanite whose insecurities manifest themselves in the form of a mini-me who becomes a serious usurping threat. This SXSW-launched Hulu Original is sufficiently polished to pass muster as a night’s streaming entertainment for undiscriminating genre fans. But despite the grotesque premise, its attack is a little too blunt to make much impact, whether taken as thinly-veiled satire or straight fantasy thriller.

Holy hell this year’s SXSW Film Festival really isn’t messing around.

The previous announcement unveiled a stacked horror lineup that includes headiners Evil Dead Rise and opener Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

In addition, they revealed several prominent horror titles that will premiere as part of the Midnighters program, including the Sundance hit Talk to Me and the surprise sequel to Becky, The Wrath of Becky.

Fox has handed early two-season renewals to three of its animation mainstays — The Simpsons, Family Guy and Bob’s Burgers — taking them through the 2024-25 broadcast cycle.

The Simpsons will extend its standing as the longest-running primetime scripted series in television history with a renewal for its 35th and 36th seasons. Bob’s Burgers will return for seasons 14 and 15 and Family Guy for its 22nd and 23rd seasons.

Exclusive: Fox is developing the single-cam comedy series Get Buckets from executive producers and writers Stephen Falk (You’re the Worst), Allen Maldonado (Heels), Darrell Britt-Gibson (The Wire), and Brandon Mychal Smith (Four Weddings and a Funeral). Maldonado, Britt-Gibson, and Smith will also star.

Get Buckets follows three estranged brothers who must band together following their billionaire father’s untimely death to figure out how to run the professional basketball team he left behind — and how to be a family.

B. Smyth, the R&b singer who earned stardom with hits like “Leggo” and “Twerkaholic”, has died. He was 28.

The singer’s brother, Denzil Smith, took to Instagram and revealed in an emotional video that B. Smyth, born Brandon Smith, died Thursday morning from respiratory failure after a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis. He added that while the singer was in ICU, fans brought him a lot of smiles by creating social media challenges for his latest single, “Twerkaholic Part 2”.

“Twerkaholic” dropped in 2014 and instantly became a fan favourite. The music video has racked up more than 17 million views and more than 13 million streams on Spotify. “Twerkaholic Part 2” dropped just last month.

Singer B. Smyth, whose single “Twerkoholic” had 13 million Spotify streams, died today of pulmonary fibrosis at age 28.

His brother, Denzil, confirmed his passing in a video message posted to Smyth’s official Instagram page.

“Today regretfully I have to announce that my brother has passed away this morning from respiratory failure after a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis,” Denzil wrote in the caption.

Denzil said his brother “wanted him” to make the video to thank his fans for their love and support.

“My brother was very excited to see a lot of you create challenges for his latest released single #Twerkoholic part 2 while he was in the ICU, it really brought him a big smile to his face.”

Born Brandon Smith, the singer began his career as a YouTube star, uploading his versions of hit music to the service.

Though their popularity peaked long before most of today’s actual teenagers were born, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles never really went away. We’re only six years removed from the most recent live-action film based on the pizza-loving reptiles, and it was just two months ago that a new Tmnt video game was released. Ant Ward and Andy Suriano’s “Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie,” which arrives on Netflix this week, is based on the animated series that aired on Nickelodeon from 2018 to 2020. While unlikely to bring any nostalgia-minded fans of the series’ early-’90s heyday back into the fold, “Rise” is a serviceable — if also forgettable — entry in the cowabunga canon.

Those heroes in a half shell are back to fight Krang in the all-new trailer for the Netflix animated film “Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.”

In the brand new look dropped Wednesday, Casey Jones travels back in time at the command of Master Leonardo to enlist the Tmnt in a fight against Krang, who are on a path to destroy their world.

The film continues the tale from the Nickelodeon series. It follows Raphael, Michelangelo, Leonardo and Donatello as they work to rise up to become the heroes they are destined to be.

Among this year’s programming options is Freeform’s annual “31 Nights of Halloween,” with up to 10 films a day including many family favorites from “Shrek” to “Casper,” plus an in-person event in Los Angeles called Freeform’s Halloween Road. Additionally, horror streaming service Shudder has kicked off “61 Days of Halloween,” with weekly film and series premieres, 24-hour jack-o-lantern stream “The Ghoul Log” and a “Halloween Hotline” where every Friday in October, subscribers can call Shudder’s head of programming Samuel Zimmerman to discuss horror favorites and receive new recommendations.

In today’s TV landscape, the term “limited series” is a fluid concept (see Big Little Lies). That said, when Four Weddings and a Funeral co-creator and executive producer Mindy Kaling and showrunner Tracey Wigfield were asked at TCA if the Hulu adaptation of the beloved romantic comedy would follow suit with the popular HBO limited series and get a second season, they didn’t say yes…and they didn’t say no.

“Is that up to us?” Kaling said Friday, laughing, about the possibility of the series going beyond the “limited series” realm. “We’re still editing Episode 10!”

Wigfield chimed in saying that if the audience demanded it, a second season would be a possibility. Even so, she said they “wrote it as a complete story” that was a fulfilling 10-episode series. Whether it goes beyond that is up in the air. “Anything can be anything,” she said.

“Four Weddings and a Funeral” fans looking forward to Mindy Kaling’s adaptation of the beloved ’90s rom-com starring Andie MacDowell and Hugh Grant should know how the Hulu miniseries will be different from the film — and how it won’t.

Here to explain it to you is star Rebecca Rittenhouse, who plays Ainsley on the streaming service’s small-screen update of “Four Weddings,” who told TheWrap the show will follow the basic structure of the 1994 movie.

“Well, the TV adaptation is really a reimagining of the original and the characters are not exactly parallel and ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’ is really used as a structure,” Rittenhouse told TheWrap in the above interview. “So it’s about four American friends living in London and over the course of their story, four weddings and a funeral happen. So it’s really just about friendship, love and big life events.”

Bill Pullman, Eddie Izzard and Diplo have joined the cast of the Focus Features comedy “Covers” opposite Dakota Johnson, Tracee Ellis Ross and Ice Cube.

“Covers” is set within the talent, fame and fast-paced world of Hollywood’s music scene. “Late Night” director Nisha Ganatra is helming from a screenplay by Flora Greeson. Production is currently underway in Los Angeles.

Pullman’s credits include “Battle of the Sexes” and USA Networks’ “The Sinner.” Izzard most recently starred in “Victoria & Abdul.” Diplo has worked with artists including Beyoncé, Justin Bieber and Madonna. His most recent acting credit was in Detective Pikachu.

Exclusive: The Vampire Diaries alum Nina Dobrev has come aboard to star and executive produce Sick Girl, an indie film comedy that will serve as the feature writing and directing debut for Jennifer Cram, the longtime casting associate who most recently was casting director on Showtime’s Ray Donovan.

Wendi McLendon-Covey, Brandon Mychal Smith, Sherry Cola, Stephanie Koenig, Hayley Magnus, Dan Bakkedahl and Ray McKinnon will co-star in the pic, a a female-driven comedy centered on Wren Pepper (Dobrev), who feels that she and her lifelong friends have grown apart.
