Deadpool & Wolverine couldn't get everyone back, which meant having to secretly recast multiple characters, including a few major X-Men villains.
Marvel Studios' first foray into the world of the X-Men turned out to be a rather sweet swansong to the Foxverse and its films. It also gave other characters like Wesley Snipes' Blade one last chance in the limelight before they're recast in the MCU.
However, most of the cameos in the Deadpool threequel can be found huddled in Cassandra Nova's compound in The Void, acting as her personal army. While some actors from years past returned as her henchmen, like Aaron Stanford's Pyro, others didn't or simply couldn't.

The villains of "Deadpool & Wolverine" include the psychic Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin). The movie gets nowhere close to the gonzo stories told about Cassandra in Marvel Comics, but it maintains her origin as the evil twin sister of the X-Men's leader, Professor Charles Xavier. Banished to the wasteland dimension of the Void, Nova has made herself queen of Hell with a band of followers.
The inside joke of "Deadpool & Wolverine" is how the Marvel movies produced by the erstwhile 20th Century Fox risk being forgotten thanks to the Disney merger that put all these characters under the McU's umbrella. So, Nova's army is made up of the most forgotten villains of those films: Lady Deathstrike, Azazel, Toad, Bullseye, Juggernaut, etc. (All these minor villains were recast from their original appearances.)

Deadpool & Wolverine raised massive headlines for executing some of the craziest cameos. While Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds’ long-awaited reunion elevated the film’s hype, the MCU film also generated massive hype for bringing back many old X-Men characters like Pyro. Recently, fans have claimed that a sequence featuring Pyro and Wolverine was one of the funniest MCU scenes.

Deadpool and Wolverine may have come and gone, but that's only the beginning of an incredibly exciting era for Marvel Studios' Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was a major turning point for the saga, as it officially confronted the long-running franchise with the mutants' story as Hugh Jackman brought his Wolverine back to the big screens, opening the MCU up to the possibility of the X-Men.
He wasn't the only X-Men star to appear in the film either, as Aaron Stanford reprised his role as Pyro from X2: X-Men United and X-Men: The Last Stand and Dafne Keen returned as Logan's Laura, while Channing Tatum finally got to play the role of Gambit after very nearly playing it in that aforementioned X-Men movie series.
There were rumors of other returnees, but those never panned out. And yet they remain entirely possible in the future due to the Multiverse Saga's existence,...

The first time you watch Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) brawl Yuriko Oyama aka Lady Deathstrike (Kelly Hu) in 2003's "X2: X-Men United," you may find yourself echoing what Logan says at the outset of their showdown: "Holy s**t." More than 20 years later, the fight between these two super-healing individuals with adamantium-laced skeletons still ranks up there as one of the most savage mutant versus mutant scuffles in all of 20th Century Fox's "X-Men" movies. Despite being restricted by the film's PG-13 rating, this sequence manages to packs in plenty of wince-inducing moments, culminating with Lady Deathstrike's horrifying fate of death by liquified adamantium injection. That she'd spent the whole movie being forced to serve the detestable William Stryker (Brian Cox), who uses a mind control serum to rob her of her agency, only adds to the greater tragedy of the character.

Chris Evans might be best known as Steve Rogers, the Marvel Cinematic Universe's first Captain America, but most fans will know this was not his first foray into superhero movies. In fact, it wasn't even his first experience playing a Marvel character. Prior to playing Cap, Evans appeared as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch in 2005's "Fantastic Four" — a much maligned effort from the days when 20th Century Fox owned a chunk of the Marvel portfolio, only for the studio itself to be subsumed by Disney in 2019.
But when it comes to "Fantastic Four," one thing that you can't fault director Tim Story for is the casting, especially in Evans' case. The actor did a fine job as Johnny Storm, bringing a cocky yet endearing energy to the role, and seemingly maintaining a personal affection for the character ever since. Halle Berry revealed in a recent interview with ComicBook.com while promoting her upcoming Netflix movie “The Union” that she was never asked by Ryan Reynolds to reprise her “X-Men” movie role of Storm in “Deadpool & Wolverine.” The record-breaking Marvel blockbuster featured the surprise returns of several heroes from Fox’s Marvel era, from Jennifer Garner’s Elektra to Wesley Snipes’ Blade.

“Deadpool & Wolverine” can add another name to its list of cameos.
Stunt coordinator and second unit director George Cottle revealed Monday on Instagram that Tom Holland’s brother, Harry Holland, was a part of the “Deadpool & Wolverine” stunt team.
“When [Shawn Levy] and [Ryan Reynolds] set the bar so f’ing high, even the stunt team needed a special guest star!!” Cottle wrote on his Instagram story. “It may not [be] the Holland the world wanted, but it was the Holland we all needed!!”
Cottle also shared a behind-the-scenes photo of Harry Holland, who played a Deadpool variant in the superhero threequel. “You smashed it my friend,” he wrote directly to Harry Holland, along with the hashtag #Haroldpool.
Harry Holland’s role came as a surprise to many — even Ryan Reynolds himself.

Taking to Twitter, Ryan Reynolds has said goodbye to the Fox Universe of Marvel superhero films.
Of course, MCU fans are convinced that Deadpool & Wolverine won't be the last we see of the Fox Universe, thanks to 2027's Avengers: Secret Wars. And there's a chance that they might turn up sooner as Marvel Studios quietly backs away from Kang the Conqueror and The Kang Dynasty in 2026's Avengers 5.
Still, who knows if this is indeed the last time will visit Earth-10005?
On social media, Reynolds wrote, "This isn’t just Deadpool saying ‘Oh, Hello’ to the MCU. It’s Deadpool – and Hugh, Shawn and me – saying farewell to a place and an era that literally made us."
"We are forever grateful to the fun, weird, uneven and risky world of 20th Century Fox. It was our origin story and we wouldn’t trade it for anything. And thank you...

This article has Deadpool & Wolverine spoilers galore.
Going into Deadpool & Wolverine, conventional wisdom held that the film would be a definitive end to the X-Men movies produced by 20th Century Fox. After all, even if Kevin Feige had a hand in crafting that universe, serving as a producer on X2: X-Men United and X-Men: The Last Stand, he didn’t enjoy the full control that he has now as head of Marvel Studios. And given the multiple wrong turns, not to mention more than a few bad men who have been involved with the franchise, it might be nice to give Marvel’s merry mutants a clean slate.
But in a surprise bigger than any of its cameos, Deadpool & Wolverine preserves the Fox Universe for future use… and it leaves the door wide open for their possible return to the MCU proper.

“Deadpool & Wolverine” is finally here. It’s the epic superhero saga that has been teased since the “Deadpool” test footage that leaked ahead of the first movie’s production and it is very much worth the wait. Deadpool and Wolverine (a returning Hugh Jackman) are forced to team up to save Deadpool’s universe from a rogue Tva middle-manager named Paradox (Matthew Macfadyen) and Charles Xavier’s psychotic sister Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin).
And along the way they meet a few friends …
As soon as “Deadpool & Wolverine” was announced, the assumption was that the film would be a cameo-palooza, full of characters from both the mainline Marvel Cinematic Universe and from the vestigial universe established by the 20th Century Fox franchises, with “X-Men,” “Fantastic Four” and others.

This article contains major spoilers for "Deadpool & Wolverine."
It comes as no surprise that "Deadpool & Wolverine," the third film in the Merc with a Mouth's film franchise would be chock full of cameos on top of the return of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, especially since this feels like a capstone on top of the 20th Century Fox era of Marvel movies. As Deadpool enters the MCU, there are a variety of characters whose movie franchises were cut short and should have continued, and they get a chance to shine once more with some cheeky humor thrown in for good measure. There's even one version of a character who was never actually brought to the big screen until now.
Basically, "Deadpool & Wolverine" pulled out all the stops and offered a smorgasbord of Marvel characters and big name cameos, even though Taylor Swift isn't one of them. But there's...

While Ryan Reynolds has gone on the record as far back as 2021 to state that his dream vision for a third Deadpool movie always involved a road trip story with Wade and Logan, the path to making Deadpool & Wolverine a reality was anything but a smooth ride. In fact, Reynolds spent a good deal of time pitching Marvel Studios on a number of alternate, divergent ideas for Deadpool 3… including a low-budget concept sans any big set pieces. And when we spoke to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige last week, the MCU impresario confirmed that a “Sundance” version was briefly developed. He even shed some light on Reynolds’ apparently Yuletide vision.

From the very first scene, Wade Wilson is squatting in the grave of Wolverine and the X-Men cinematic universe he helped build. This is not a metaphor. The film literally opens with Ryan Reynolds’ crimson-clad dynamo six feet deep in the hole Hugh Jackman’s superhero was buried beneath at the end of Logan, desperate to resurrect the past—or at least exhume the corpse of it for a gag.
It is not a metaphor, and yet it happily invites one all the same while watching Deadpool & Wolverine, the third fourth-wall-knocking laugher starring Reynolds and an endless barrage of dick jokes. Often funny ones too. Marketed as a long-overdue buddy comedy about the most popular (and lucrative) characters in Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s respective oeuvres, Deadpool & Wolverine is indeed quite giggle-inducing when it slouches back into the iconography of its leads and watches what happens when you...

In the modern age of superhero movie domination, comic book-accurate portrayals are a basic expectation. Nowadays fans even get upset when an actor doesn’t have the right hair color or nationality as the character that they’re portraying. Those expectations weren’t nearly as prominent back when X2: X-Men United was released in 2003. But that didn’t stop Aaron Stanford from doing his best to do justice to St. John Allerdyce, the Aussie mutant better known as Pyro in the comics.
“The movie Chopper had just come out and I loved Chopper, so I approached them with my best Mark Brandon Read accent,” Ashford tells Den of Geek, referring to Eric Bana’s character from the hit Aussie crime film. “I asked them, ‘Do you guys want him to have an Australian accent in this?’ and they were just like, ‘Absolutely not.’”

Here’s the thing about Deadpool: he knows that he’s in a movie. So he’s probably aware that his long-awaited first MCU entry Deadpool & Wolverine has finally been screened to critics and that those critics are sharing their thoughts about the movie on social media. But is he reading the tweets and jumping in joy or blowing himself up a la Deadpool 2? The studio betting big on the character’s latest theatrical outing is definitely hoping it’s the former.
After the relative box office and critical failures of Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels, Deadpool & Wolverine is the sole Marvel movie making it to theaters this year (unless we count Sony trash such as Madame Web). Marvel hopes that star Ryan Reynolds and his Deadpool will help turn the tide of superhero fatigue and make the MCU the sensation that it once was.

The team behind “Deadpool & Wolverine” has not hidden the fact that the upcoming Marvel movie is home to some pretty huge superhero cameos that will delight comic book movie fans, but protecting those cameos meant leaking misinformation to fans. In an interview with GamesRadar+, executive producer Wendy Jacobson said “there may or may not have been some subterfuge and misdirections on the internet or in-person in order to protect the secrecy.”
“I can neither confirm nor deny any cameos in this film but I will say, in terms of characters that may or may not appear, it was always important to us that nothing in this movie feels like a gimmick,” Jacobson added. “Anyone showing up has a crucial story purpose or a beginning, middle and end as a character arc. It was definitely a collaborative process of seeing who fit in and who didn’t.”
