Essie Davis as Phryne Fisher.
Essie Davis sports an array of dashing outfits as the heroine in Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears, which opens in Australia on February 27 and starts streaming on Acorn TV in the Us on March 23.
Costume designer Margot Wilson created 15 different looks for Phryne Fisher as the sleuth shows her prowess at fencing, jumps from a cliff onto a train and through windows, dances the tango, flies a plane and drives a car.
Wilson also enjoyed swapping the detective suit traditionally worn by Nathan Page’s Inspector Jack Robinson for a safari suit made from linen table cloths.
“Jack would have looked ridiculous in a heavy suit in the desert. The linen safari suit moves him more towards Phryne visually,” Margot says.
Roadshow has released a selection of stills of the movie directed by Tony Tilse, scripted by Every Cloud Productions’ Deb Cox and produced by Fiona Eagger.

Nathan Davis and Essie Davis in Palm Springs.
The creators of Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears were always confident the movie would appeal to the legion of Essie Davis’ Phryne Fisher fans, but what about those who have never seen the TV series?
Any doubts soon vanished during the world premiere of the 1929-set adventure-murder mystery-romance, the first of three sold-out screenings at the Palm Springs International Film Festival.
Director Tony Tilse likened the atmosphere to a rock concert as 865 people whooped, hollered and laughed and gave a standing ovation at the end.
“People who had never seen the TV series told me how much they enjoyed it,” Tilse, who was set-up director on the series, tells If. “The enthusiasm and love for the film was overwhelming and very humbling.”

(L-r) Greg McLean, Phoebe Tonkin, Bryan Brown, Glen Dolman.
During filming of Stan’s Bloom in Victoria last year the creator/showrunner Glen Dolman was already hatching ideas for a second series of the supernatural drama.
So when Stan’s Mike Sneesby and Nick Forward ordered another six episodes in April after he pitched an overview Dolman pressed ahead with plans to bring a fresh perspective to the show.
That involved hiring new directors in Greg McLean and Sian Davies (who collaborated on Stan’s The Gloaming), assembling a new team of writers and adding half a dozen fresh faces to the cast, with the assistance of casting director Leigh Pickford.
Joining him in the writers’ room are Giula Sandler, Matt Ford, Tommy Murphy and Catherine S McMullen. Dolman scripted four of the six eps of the first series, which was named Drama Series Production of the Year at last...

BuzzFeed’s newest project will shine a light on its own reporters — who will be the stars in a new Netflix short-form documentary series slated to bow this summer.
The 20-episode series, “Follow This,” will premiere July 9 on Netflix worldwide. Each 15-minute episode will be released weekly, not in Netflix’s usual binge-able release. The new show is an example of shorter-form content Netflix is acquiring, designed to appeal to viewers on mobile devices.
“We’re thrilled that Netflix saw the drama in the work of our journalism and the stories we tell,” BuzzFeed News editor-in-chief Ben Smith said in a statement. “And we’re so pleased to have brought what we’ve learned to Netflix’s unmatched audience.”
The first episode, “The Internet Whisperers,” follows BuzzFeed reporter Scaachi Koul as she delves into on a story about the “head orgasm” experience of Asmr, or autonomous sensory meridian response.

How did you come to make The Silences?
I wrote it as a feature drama. The story was something I really wanted to tell. I had done two feature dramas, so I wrote a script, but it was really expensive and it was really hard to get made and I just put it away. [But] It just wouldn't go away. It was this thing that kept nagging at me. I thought: can I tell it as a documentary? I got a filmmaker residency in Zurich in 2012. It was a fourteen week paid residency where I could work on a project. I had to give some masterclasses but I had a lot of time. I suddenly had this brainwave. I've been making films since the 1970's, and I've often drawn on my story to create images or construct characters. I'd literally re-created some images from my...

Copyright owners and ISPs have agreed on the terms of a new code of practice designed to reduce online copyright infringement.
Due to come into force on September 1, the Copyright Notice Scheme Code will result in ISPs sending up to three written warnings to broadband customers who are suspected of persistently downloading pirated content.
ISPs would then provide rights holders with a list of the number of account holders who receive three warnings and would assist in their application to the Federal Court to disclose the names and contact details of the offenders for possible court action.
The code was finalised today to meet a deadline imposed by the federal government and sent to the Australian Communications and Media Authority for registration.

Here's a rumor that will spice up your life: the Spice Girls might join the Backstreet Boys for a reunion tour. While this is as likely as seeing Posh in a pair of Sporty's track pants, we would definitely pay our hard-earned money to see it, just like we did on Spice World movie tickets in 1997. Even if we shouldn't hold our breath for a "I Want It That Way" and "Wannabe" live mashup, let's relive the magic with all the signs you were Scary, Sporty, Ginger, Baby, and Posh's biggest fan. Today, we went into full '90s nostalgia mode when Victoria Beckham tweeted photos of Spice Girls-themed pizza. "My mum just found this vintage pizza in the freezer!" she captioned a photo of the box - which boasts that it has a different flavor for each letter of "Spice" - and then shared one of the uncooked products. "It looks even better out of the packaging!" she wrote alongside a surprisingly non-freezer-burnt pizza. After calming down from the Posh Spice excitement, we quickly discovered that this was far from the first or last Spice Girls-themed food item that hit the market. In addition to frozen pizza, the girls spiced up the likes of potato chips, Cadbury Creme Eggs, and soda. Keep reading to see eight items in all their glory - some of which are still for sale, but eat at your own risk. Source: John Stanton/Getty...

John Stanton talks about the process of making the forthcoming John Carter, and just why Pixar movies are so brilliant, in a fascinating Q&A…
On Monday, we shared our thoughts on the 20-minute preview we caught of John Carter, Disney’s forthcoming sci-fi fantasy based on the books by Edgar Rice Burroughs. What we saw left us clamouring to see the finished movie, but we were similarly impressed at just how passionate and forthright its director Andrew Stanton was in the fifteen-minute question and answer session that followed.
Hosted by film critic James King, it was among the most entertaining Q&As we’ve ever had the fortune to sit through, with Stanton talking openly about the process of shooting John Carter, its 3D, what it’s like to make a movie in Hollywood, and most intriguingly, why Pixar’s method of making films should be more widely adopted…...

Disney has shifted dates on two big films for 2012. Tim Burton's feature-length expansion of Frankenweenie has been moved from March 9, 2012 to October 5, 2012. Hopefully that'll be a much more appropriate date for the film. Part of the reason for that date switch is that Disney has also moved John Stanton's John Carter of Mars up from June 8 to March 9, the date previously [1] occupied by Frankenweenie. The other thing that stands out about this shift is that Disney is clearly tweaking the face it presents to Fox, which will open [2] Ridley Scott's 'no longer an Alien prequel' Prometheus on March 9. Speculate now on whether Disney thinks that John Carter is more equipped to directly face off against Ridley Scott -- one sci-fi film against another, rather than counter-programming Frankenweenie against Prometheus. Or maybe Frankenweenie will need more time. Or there could be other reasons altogether -- just rely on the dates for now.
