In Todd Solondz’s films, outcasts yearn to be among those who are sexy and confident, who of course won’t have them, and they’re left to fester in a resentment that’s often ironically shared by the same cool kids that the outcasts idolize and resent. For Solondz, social caste systems blind us to the fact that we’re all united by misery, which seems to come close to qualifying as an optimistic point of view. He understands that dreams have been pounded into us by osmosis, and that the battle between our inherent selves, which are usually ugly and embarrassing, and society exhausts us into invisibility.
It’s a bleak thesis that was fashionable in American indie cinema of the 1990s, a scene that was riven with irony and distrust of institutions. Compare that to today, when many American indies are as platitudinous as networking events, and...

Jodie Foster opened up to Esquire magazine as part of its Robert Downey Jr. cover story about what it was like directing him in the 1995 Thanksgiving comedy “Home for the Holidays.” The film marked Foster’s second outing as a feature film director after 1991’s “Little Man Tate.” Production kicked off in early 1995, which overlapped with Downey’s addiction struggles. He’d be arrested the following year for possession of heroin, cocaine and an unloaded gun.
At one point during the production of “Home for the Holidays,” Foster “took him aside” and told Downey: “Look, I couldn’t be more grateful for what you’ve given in this film. But I’m scared of what happens to you next. Right now you are incredibly good at balancing on the barstool. But it’s really precarious, and I’m not sure how that’s going to end.”

Mark Margolis, a veteran actor with hundreds of credits dating back to the 1970s but perhaps best known for his Emmy-nominated portrayal of cartel don Hector “Tio” Salamanca on TV’s Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, died Thursday at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City following a short illness. He was 83.
His death was announced by son Morgan Margolis, the CEO of Knitting Factory Entertainment. Morgan Margolis said he and Mark’s wife Jacqueline were at his bedside at the time of death.

Already missing Twitter trolling? Short on material to spark resentment since the midterm elections ended? Here’s a list that’ll get you in the Thanksgiving spirit. It’s not an exhaustive one, but if you really want to replicate the family feast experience, you can get liquored up and argue about it. There’s something here for every taste – even if your taste is on the “Dahmer” end of the spectrum.
“Home for the Holidays” (1995) Dylan McDermott and Holly Hunter liven up stuffy Cynthia Stevenson’s Thanksgiving in “Home for the Holidays” (Paramount)

Not since Gidget went Hawaiian have youthful hijinks in a mildly exotic setting seemed so old-fogeyish as they do in “Baja.” This tame, tepid road-trip comedy is notably short on laughs — save for a few unintentional ones when it tries to channel serious drama. It’s hard to know just what audience writer-director Tony Vidal was aiming for, beyond perhaps teens of a couple generations ago. Nonetheless, the self-distributed film is opening on 20-odd (mostly AMC) screens this Friday.

Many are dreading the holiday trip home this year, as a divided country may lead to some contentious political conversations over the Thanksgiving table. A few quick tips: Find the alcohol, hide the knives. If you’re already steeling yourself for your annual tension-filled visit, this video may help. Fandor has compiled a montage of cinematic Thanksgiving turkey dinners even more painful than the one you’re about to have, featuring Christina Ricci talking about massacred Native Americans, Christina Ricci torching some Native American structures, a turkey flying right at Home For The Holiday’s Cynthia Stevenson, and the unlikely instance of Pauly Shore punching someone out.
It’s not much, but this video may offer you some valuable perspective, leading to you believe that your Thanksgiving dinner really isn’t that bad. After all, Pauly Shore probably isn’t anywhere in sight.

The dysfunctional family has been an ever-present image in popular culture for decades: the battling husband and wife flanked by their bratty children are perhaps most frequently employed on garishly trite television sitcoms. In the movies, the gloves are ripped away and the reality shines on what is more often than not left unexposed in the darkness. What’s revealed seems to irrefutably prove that Tolstoy was absolutely correct when he wrote: “All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.”

Kyle Howard has made his "Your Family or Mine" co-star Kat Foster believe in love, or at least believe in on-screen chemistry. "I never totally bought the idea of 'chemistry,' like 'romantic chemistry.'" Foster told me. "I always thought like,'"Oh well if you’re a nice and sweet person with some kind of charm you can probably kind of have chemistry with anyone.' And I thought that for a while and then as we’ve shot the show I’ve started to buy chemistry because I truly feel that Kyle and I really have a genuine kind of simpatico that is actually very, very rare to find with someone you’re playing opposite." All together now: "Awww..." The conceit of "Your Family or Mine" is that Foster's Kelli and Howard's Oliver are married. This week, on Sleepy Hollow: Abbie and Jenny free their mother, Frank makes a break for it, and Ichabod tries Matzah ball soup
For months now, Sleepy Hollow has struggled to regain the magic of its first season. Episodes throughout season two have been entertaining, but they’ve lacked the punch of the best of season one. The series has been too focused on Abraham, the potential redemption of Jeremy, and Hawley (the Manufactured Mills Sister Love Triangle Instigator), and moved away from what it worked so hard to establish in season one, the bond (platonic or otherwise) between Abbie and Ichabod and the recovering relationship of Abbie and Jenny. So…what do I mean by “What the F**k?” Movies? These are the films that, upon completing your viewing, you seriously worry about the director’s sanity. Or you can’t really comprehend what you just saw. Or you know what you watched was something magical, but can’t really put the pieces together in your mind. Or, worse, you know what happened, but certifiably it’s insane. But with this “definition” comes a few caveats: no horror films and no fully animated films. Those genres lean a little too crazy to begin with – it’s more fun to look at films that force a sense of realism, even if it’s just on the surface.

We open on Liv’s bedroom, where the newly returned Ballard (Scott Foley) is passed out on the bed, even though if I were released from The Hole, the first things I’d do would be shower, shave, and eat about 20 donuts.
Liv (Kerry Washington), for her part, is cowering on the floor, with this haunted, shell-shocked look on her face, like she just realized she’s out of wine and/or watched the season finale of Breaking Bad.
For recapping purposes, she’s helpfully remembering scenes from last week (in flashback-friendly black-and-white). You remember — confronting Daddy about being Daddy Command … getting choked by Huck … and “Ding, dong, special delivery. Here’s that battered, emotionally shattered husk of a boyfriend you ordered. With a side of garlic knots.”
She gets a call from Fitz (Tony Goldwyn), who says they need to talk about Ballard. She says, “No!” and hangs up.

Scandal, Season 3, Episode 3, “Mrs. Smith Goes to Washington”
Written by Matt Byrne
Directed by Jeannot Szwarc
Airs Thursdays at 10pm Et on ABC
On this week’s Scandal, Olivia faces down the mother of a deceased terrorist, Fitz and Mellie fight, Huck seeks revenge, and Jake recuperates.
At this rate, Scandal will burn through all of the major political happenings possible by the end of the season; thus far in the series, there’s already been an attempted assassination, several affairs, spy drama, information leakage, a mole, and now a terrorist bombing (plus next week’s promo shows Pope and Associates handling a sexting politician). Yes, Scandal‘s always moved at a rapid-fire pace, and no, Shonda Rhimes and Co. have never given us a reason to doubt the show’s ability to deliver week after week, but still, it’s three seasons in and certain storylines are beginning to feel a bit stale.

What's the best way to shake off a wholesome image? Take your clothes off – as Daniel Radcliffe well knows. So why is the one-time boy wizard now saying no to nudity?
As London Fashion Week draws to a close, it seems a good time to ask what some of the finest actors are wearing this season. And the answer appears to be: nothing. From Scarlett Johansson's copious under-the-clothes scenes in Under the Skin to Jack O'Connell tackling the tackle-out, full-frontal shot with abandon in the prison drama Starred Up, the emphasis is firmly on what not to wear. One of the common factors in many acclaimed new films is a willingness to confront nakedness without the usual strategically placed prop to spare an actor's blushes. Blue Is the Warmest Colour grabbed headlines not only for scooping the Palme d'Or at Cannes this year, but for the explicit sex scenes between its stars,...

Excellent news, gladiators -- "Friends" alumna Lisa Kudrow is set to guest star on "Scandal" in Season 3, ABC confirmed via Twitter on Wednesday.
Kudrow -- who also produces Showtime comedy "Web Therapy" and TLC's "Who Do You Think You Are?" with "Scandal" star Dan Bucatinsky -- will recur as a politician in the new season of the ABC hit, although further details about her character are currently as elusive as a B613 agent. (Is it too much to ask for her to be named Regina Phalange?)
In other "Scandal" news, Scott Foley was recently promoted from recurring to regular status for Season 3 of the political drama, while frequent Shondaland guest star Cynthia Stevenson will join the cast for a "pivotal" guest role.
Star Tony Goldwyn recently told HuffPost TV that when we rejoin "Scandal" next season, "all hell is breaking loose at the White House over [someone leaking the truth about Fitz and Olivia's affair], and Fitz is kind...

It’s time to put your thinking caps on, ladies and gentlemen, and make an attempt at figuring out who Cynthia Stevenson might be playing in an important guest-starring role in Scandal’s upcoming third season. Nobody wants to know more than I do – secrecy has gotten out of hand these days and we need to put a stop to arbitrarily withholding information! – but I’m completely tapped out mentally. I need help from the great Internet and all the billions of people who lurk its lands. Surely somebody, anybody, is capable of accurately guessing what Stevenson’s role might be.
Let’s look at what we know so far from THR: Stevenson will be playing a new client of Pope & Associates in a mid-October episode and her guest stint is being called pivotal. After that, everything is a closely guarded secret. So, she’s important and a client. Hmm,...

Two unexpected foes will align in Sons of Anarchy‘s sixth season with one common goal : to “hurt” Jax.
The following promo for the gritty FX drama’s upcoming run (bowing Sept. 10 at 10/9c) features an incarcerated Clay working closely with the kinda insane Lee Toric (Donal Logue). Sons boss Kurt Sutter, however, has said that the dethroned king’s journey this year is “redemption,” so maybe this is all just a ploy to get back into Samcro’s good graces?

"Scandal" has tapped "Dead Like Me" alumna Cynthia Stevenson for a Season 3 guest role, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Stevenson will play a new client seeking assistance from Olivia Pope and Associates, in what THR describes as "a pivotal guest role." No further details on Stevenson's character are available at this time.
The actress has previously appeared on all three of Shonda Rhimes' prior ABC series -- she had guest roles in "Grey's Anatomy" Season 6 in an episode titled "Blink," "Private Practice" Season 5 in an episode called "Step One," and "Off the Map's" first and only season in the episode "Hold on Tight."
"Scandal" fans also succeeded in unlocking the new Season 3 poster by retweeting the cast, and the newly released image highlights Olivia's (Kerry Washington) unenviable position now that "the secret is out" about her affair with President Grant (Tony Goldwyn).

Treating teenage growing pains with a sensitivity that frequently trips into singer-songwriter-ish mushiness, Tiger Eyes nonetheless stands as a respectable first cinematic adaptation of a Judy Blume novel. Directed and co-written by her son, Lawrence, Blume's tale follows 15-year-old Davey (Willa Holland) as she relocates, in the wake of her father's murder, from Atlantic City to New Mexico with her grieving-mess mother (Amy Jo Johnson) and younger brother in order to live with a pushy aunt (Cynthia Stevenson) and judgmental uncle (Forrest Fyre). Struggling to fit in at school, Davey finds solace climbing in the mountains with Native American hunk Wolf (Tatanka Means), whose father is the dying patient whom Davey befriends while volunteering at the local hospital, and who teach...

Judy Blume has been writing books since the 1960s. A lot of the books she's written could have made some good movies. A couple of my favorite books that I remember are Tales of A Fourth Grade Nothing and Superfudge. After all these years, one of her books is finally getting the big screen treatment. Tiger Eyes is the first book from Blume's collection that has been made into a feature, and we have the first trailer for it!
The movie was directed and co-written by her son, Lawrence Blume, and it stars Willa Holland, Amy Jo Johnson, Cynthia Stevenson, Tatanka Means, Elise Eberle, and Russell Means. This actually looks like a solid adaptation of the story. Here's the synopsis...

Bob Newhart had a number of different shows in his career as one of television’s most popular comedians, and perhaps the oddest concept of them all was the one that cast him as a comic book writer doing his best to compete in a cutthroat publishing industry amidst a collection of executives, social outcasts, and his family. The show, simply titled Bob, scores a high number of laughs per episode by capitalizing on the abilities of its great cast which includes Bob, Cynthia Stevenson (Dead Like Me), Andrew Bilgore, and John Cygan. The show still relies on basic sitcom fare with very simple plots, but the comedy takes clever approaches to most of its jokes that reveal many current sitcoms, by comparison, as the overly broad trainwrecks that they are.

The 1990s were quite a turning point for society as a whole. After a decade of conservative politics, neon colors, feel-good music, corporate greed and the entire “Me” generation, we as a collective whole hit a brick wall and said “enough”. Suddenly bands who were labeled “college rock” were hitting the popular stations, Grunge put Seattle back on the map. And suddenly no one knew who they were anymore. Clothiers stole from every imaginable source for inspiration, songwriters eschewed the party scene for lyrics that delved deep into the darker recesses of the soul, and the tough guy made way for the sensitive, caring man who wasn’t afraid to show emotion.
As always, film is a wonderful time-capsule, capturing the present and preserving it for us to look back on and take a new look at what was going on in the world. Here, I present ten films that...

So let's give thanks for these memorable movie moments: 1. Home for the Holidays: This 1995 comedy, directed by Jodie Foster, contains one of the best Thanksgiving scenes ever put to celluloid as Claire (Holly Hunter) flies home to spend Turkey Day with her parents (Anne Bancroft and Charles Durning), gay brother Tommy (Robert Downey Jr.) and stuffy sister Joanne (Cynthia Stevenson) and her family. Hilarity ensues when Tommy...

Best Male LeadRonald Bronstein"Daddy Longlegs"Beginner's luck? Ronald Bronstein is an award-winning writer-director of indie films. But in writer-directors Josh Safdie and Benny Safdie's film "Daddy Longlegs," he makes his film acting debut. Here he plays Lenny, a divorced father of two young boys who has little grasp on parental responsibility and skill, and even less good judgment. When we first meet Lenny, he pompously mouths off to the school principal in a juvenile defense of his two boys. That scene sets our teeth on edge for what's to come. Lenny takes his sons on vacation with a woman he first met at a bar the night before. He brings the kids to his job as a projectionist, then lets them run wild and even operate the projector—badly. Told he can't bring them again, he gives them a wee dose of sedatives that sends them into Stage 4 sleep for days on end.

Thanksgiving gets somewhat shortchanged in the movies, Eli Roth fake trailers aside. Perhaps screenwriters and filmmakers think that Thanksgiving doesn't present opportunities for cinematic conflict and action. New 'Case 39' movie delivered lots of suspense, twists & thrills. Paramount Vantage released their new mystery/thriller flick "Case 39" into theaters this weekend. I checked it out last night, and was pretty damn impressed with it. It delivered some great twists, along with really suspenseful scenes. The movie stars: Renée Zellweger, Jodelle Ferland, Ian McShane, Bradley Cooper, Kerry O’Malley, Callum Keith Rennie, Adrian Lester, Georgia Craig, and Cynthia Stevenson. "Case 39" movie revolved characters Emily Jenkins (Renee Zellweger) and Lilith Sullivan (Jodelle Ferland). Emily is a social worker who takes Lilith's case to check up on how she's doing with her parents. They appear to be very strange and sets off red flags with Emily. So, she keeps a close eye on Lilith, and eventually rescues her from being killed by her parents.
