Rassilon. The name might not mean much to the general public, but seasoned Doctor Who fans will shudder at it as he’s one of the Doctor’s most dangerous foes. Rassilon is the founder of the Time Lord society that the Doctor hails from and is credited with many innovations, most notably Tardis technology. Unfortunately, though, he’s also a power-mad dictator, which has put him in opposition to the Doctor and their companions on multiple occasions.
Memorably played by a scenery-chewing Timothy Dalton in the 2009-2010 story “The End of Time,” we last saw him in 2015’s Twelfth Doctor story “Hell Bent” (where he was played by Donald Sumpter). Since then, he’s been absent from our screens, though there are some big clues that the character will make a reappearance in the show soon.
Rassilon is already confirmed to return in upcoming Big Finish audio drama “Time War 4,” due in early 2021. There,...

Maester Luwin made his debut in the pilot episode of Game of Thrones and survived two seasons. He is perhaps best remembered for teaching and aiding a young Bran when both his father, mother and elder brother left his as the highest-ranking Stark at Winterfell and the War of the Five Kings began. Maester Luwin was portrayed by Donald Sumpter and, it's quite possible he looked somewhat familiar to many Thrones viewers.

Dan Stevens gives a frenetic performance as Charles Dickens racing to finish writing “A Christmas Carol” in time to publish before the holiday, in The Man Who Invented Christmas. Directed by Bharat Nalluri (Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day), this film has all the Christmas color and Victorian period costumes and sets you could want in a Christmas film. The film is mostly a clever way to retell the famous tale, as characters spring from the author’s imagination while he struggles with his own family issues and races to meet a pre-Christmas release deadline, but it also touches on how his short novel transformed a once-minor holiday into the tradition we know today.

The Doctor finally returned to Gallifrey in Doctor Who season 9’s two-part finale, Heaven Sent/Hell Bent. Rassilon appeared in the second part, for the first time since 2010’s David Tennant-dispatching special The End Of Time Part 2. If you were going to write a script following the further adventures of two Shakespearean characters, it's a safe bet Rosencrantz and Guildenstern wouldn't be the first names to spring to mind. For those who don't know, they are two minor characters from Shakespeare's Hamlet. They become the focus of Tom Stoppard's 1966 play Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead, adapted for the big screen in 1990. The title is taken directly from a line spoken in Hamlet.
It is a fairly shapeless, existential film. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern (Gary Oldman and Tim Roth) travel around the wilderness, partaking in nonsensical debates about fate, chance, life and death. They seem unsure of where they are going or why, and often muddle up their own names as if they are not entirely certain of their identity.
They stumble across a travelling acting troupe fronted by the Lead Player (Richard Dreyfuss). He...

Loose threads, speculation, and a fan's wishlist: some thoughts on where Doctor Who series 10 may take us...
This article contains spoilers for Doctor Who series 9.
Series 9 of Doctor Who (or Season 35, if you’re our favourite kind of pedant) may still be warm in the ground, but fans being fans we’re inevitably already wondering what’s next. We’ve got a festive trifle at Christmas, of course, with The Husbands Of River Song reuniting the Doctor with everyone’s second-favourite Whoniverse archaeologist, but what then? Here’s some of the possible directions we think Series 10 may take…
A New Companion
This one’s not so much speculation as fact; the Doctor will be joined by a new companion when the tenth series begins sometime next year.
Steven Moffat has been discussing how bringing a new companion in reboots the show to an extent, saying that he...

A few thoughts on tonight's "Doctor Who" season finale — and on this season as a whole — coming up just as soon as we have lunch followed by breakfast... As someone with virtually no "Doctor Who" experience prior to the reboot, I've always appreciated Russell T. Davies' decision to kill off the Timelords. As it is, the new version of the series has plenty of links to the old — especially since Davies couldn't stop himself from continually bringing back more and more Daleks — but I've only occasionally felt like I arrived at class without having done the reading assignment when I watch episodes dealing with the Doctor's former friends and enemies. Obviously, the series has lots of fans who can recite chapter and verse on every adventure going back to William Hartnell, but for us relative newbies, sidelining the Time Lords did a good job of boiling the show down...

Set in 1930’s London at a time of Hollywood glamour, aerodynamic cars and monster movies, the drama pays homage to the Stevenson novel, and focuses on the young, attractive, troubled hero, Robert Jekyll, the grandson of the original doctor. Robert Jekyll’s quest is to discover his real identity, his true family history and the nature of his ‘curse’. Jekyll transforms into superhero Hyde in moments of extreme anger, stress and when his or the lives of others are threatened. The new fantasy show of Jekyll and Hyde stars Tom Bateman as Jekyll and Hyde, Richard E. Grant as Bullstrode, Natalie Gumede as Bella and Donald Sumpter as Garson. Jekyll & Hyde airs every Sunday at 6.30pm on ITV (UK and Ireland). Tba for the United States and the rest of the world. Jekyll & Hyde has been published by many comic book properties.

You've heard of Breaking Bad, Orange Is The New Black & House Of Cards, what about Danger 5, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Darknet and more?…
Quite understandably, column inches can't fill up quickly enough with praise for the likes of Netflix original series House Of Cards, Orange Is The New Black, Breaking Bad spin-off Better Call Saul and Marvel's Daredevil. What though, about some of the lesser-known series available on the UK streaming site?
Sweeping past the well-publicised riches of Doctor Who, Sherlock, Arrested Development, Community and the like, we've ventured into the slightly dustier shelf of TV shows available on Netflix UK that may be lesser-known or less widely celebrated than the big hitters out there, but are still richly deserving of your time. Some are new, some are old, some were cancelled long ago, some are ongoing, several are from outside the UK and Us.

Hovering around the twenty-one to twenty-four feature film mark with at least a quarter of those films belonging to first time filmmakers, the Quinzaine des Realisateurs (a.k.a Directors’ Fortnight) has in the past couple of years, counted on a healthy supply of French, Spanish and Belgium produced film items, and has been geared towards the offbeat genre items as with last year’s edition curated by Edouard Waintrop and co. To be unveiled on the 22nd, as we attempted with our Critics’ Week predix, Blake Williams, Nicholas Bell and I (Eric Lavallee) are thinking out loud and hedging our bets on what the section might look like or what the programmers might be looking at for 2014. Here is our predictions overview:
Alleluia
Six years after presenting Vinyan at the Venice Film Festival, Fabrice Du Welz finally returns with potentially not one, but a pair of works for the ’14 campaign.

HBO released a 15-minute preview video for Game of Thrones' fourth season, which includes behind-the-scenes footage of the upcoming episodes as well as interviews with the cast and creators.
'Game Of Thrones' Preview
One of the main events of Season Four will be the Purple Wedding, the ceremony and celebration of the marriage between Joffrey Baratheon (Jack Gleeson) and Margaery Tyrell (Natalie Dormer). Clips from the wedding reveal a lavish set, which the actors reveal was just as impressive in person. The sheer scale of the sets, as evident with the wedding, is consistent throughout the season and impressed those working on the series at every turn.

The myth of Oedipus is a rather dark tale for a family drama like Atlantis to tackle, so in 'Twist of Fate', said myth is fused with Three Men and a Baby for an adventure that's part royal scandal, part rollicking adventure and part 'wee-wee and poo-poo' slapstick.
We open with Jason (Jack Donnelly), Pythagoras (Robert Emms) and Hercules (Mark Addy) finding a cute infant abandoned in the woods and, once they take the child home and assume the role of surrogate parents, we're treated to all the standard gags you'd expect.
There's no magicians or monsters here - instead, our heroes must deal with the perils of baby poo, changing nappies, settling a child to sleep and being sprayed with adorable urine. Oh, and of course, there's fart jokes aplenty!
The hapless trio recruit the maternal Medusa to help out, with Hercules using their time spent babysitting...

Atlantis skips mystical mythology this week for a story of family and honour. Here's Dave's review...
This review contains spoilers.
1.4 Twist of Fate
Three men and a baby…
Yes, this week Jason brings about yet more social change by rescuing an abandoned baby, despite tradition suggesting that the baby should be left to die.
So Jason heroically changes nappies, valiantly shops for food and then asks Medusa, the only woman he really knows, for help, which she quite happily gives (probably because, for Jemima Rooper, it means some dialogue and the chance to show how great she is as an actor.)
Meanwhile, King Laius of Thebes turns up to drive a wedge between Ariadne and Pasiphae (at least, he would if the writers had carried forward the initial tentative steps), whilst his wife Jocasta looks ashen and mournful.
Continuing his rather seedy quest to steal the heart of Medusa,...

Duane Hopkins has found his lead and principle photography has began on Bypass, the auteur’s much-anticipated sophomore film. George MacKay who has been growing up on-screen since P.J. "Game of Thrones" already has one of the most expansive and impressive casts in the history of television. Essentially picking up the slack that "Harry Potter" left in terms of propping up the British acting industry, the show hasn't just made stars (with names like Richard Madden, Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke coming to serious Hollywood attention), but also given great showcases to veteran character actors -- people like Donald Sumpter, Stephen Dillane and Liam Cunningham have given show-stealing turns over the last two seasons. One wondered after season one how new additions would fit in, but the first-timers blended seamlessly into the ensemble, and the show has continued to become bigger and better. And with the "Game of Thrones" Comic-Con panel taking place yesterday, the new arrivals for season three have been announced. And while there are a few familiar faces there (notably Diana Rigg, who we discussed on Friday), most aren't.

Thirty-five years after it vanished, The Black Panther – Ian Merrick's 1977 film about serial killer Donald Neilson – emerges as a gripping and highly responsible true-crime movie
After nearly four decades, Donald Neilson, aka the Black Panther, seems in retrospect like some figment of the phantasmagoric north England of the 1970s, the gothic, occult north of David Peace and the Red Riding trilogy. His crimes – countless burglaries, three murders (of village postmasters), and the kidnapping of teenage heiress Lesley Whittle – took him on meticulously planned nocturnal peregrinations across the north and the Midlands against the unfolding background of the three-day week, the oil crisis, and the Ira's first sustained mainland bombing campaign. (Or, if you prefer, between the decline of glam-rock and the rise of punk.) The dead years, in other words, a leaden age.
Neilson's arrest in December 1975 came just two months after the apprehension of another largely forgotten apparition of the period,...

Game of Thrones
“Valar Morghulis” Air Date: 6/3/2012
Well crap. Another season of Game Of Thrones is in the history books. Has it really been 10 weeks already?
Following last week’s explosive battle-filled episode “Blackwater” isn’t an easy task, even for a season finale. In many ways, last week was just as important and exciting as any finale, and I would say it was a better, more exciting, and complete episode than last night’s. But “Valar Morghulis” is no slouch, and it gave us a good shove into the direction of George R. R. Martin’s A Storm Of Swords, which seasons 3 and 4 will be based upon. There’s a lot to cover here, so much in fact, that some subplots I’ve left out so as not to spoil them.
The finale picks up some time after the events of the battle, where last we saw Tyrion, possibly gravely injured,...

While the ongoing leitmotif of Fire and Ice featured heavily in the Season Two finale of Game of Thrones, the real theme of the episode may well have been "lowered expectations". Whether it was Tyrion's coming to after saving King's Landing to find that he'd been stripped of his title, Daenerys's securing the fortune of Qarth only to find that there Is no fortune of Qarth and realize that after all that she's really more of a stay-at-home dragon mom, really, or Theon's being c*ck-blocked by his own army, the denoument to last week's excellent big battle scene seemed determined to readjust expectations across the board.
Including mine.
We start with a close-up of a reflection of fire in an eye that I immediately recognize as being one of Tyrion Lannister's (Peter Dinklage). He wakes up to learn from Maester Pycell (Julian Glover) that Stannis has been beaten down,...

Let’s get the bad news out of the way: this episode wasn’t as good as last week’s. But really, did any of us expect that it would be? And anyhow, even if this wasn’t as good, it was still pretty damn great, with everyone getting to do at least a little something.
We can start with poor Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) in King’s Landing. He’s in pretty bad shape after the battle last week, and is less than pleased that Tywin (Charles Dance) and Loras (Finn Jones) are getting all the credit for saving the city. For what it’s worth, and it probably is worth something to Tyrion, Varys (Conleth Hill) makes it clear that there are at least some out there who know what Tyrion did for them.
That, though, is nothing compared to what...

Game of Thrones is back, and this week the show decided to introduce a new and creative form of torture. Move over, Rat Bucket! Take a knee, Whore Beatings! And sorry, Molten Gold Dothraki Bukkake (Dothrakikkake?), you're So 2011. Because the show's favorite new cruelty is apparently Boring Us To Death.
Here we go!

M is for the murder of the Thirteen...
O is only Osha's wily ways
T is taking no crap from a Lannister...
H is hexagons upon your face
E is every lie that Arya's telling...
R is red on Sansa's fitted sheet...
Put it all together, it spells Batsh*T Crazy On A Water Cracker, people.
Let's dig in!
Theon (Alfie Allen) wakes up to find his wildling booty call gone, and his sentry dead, and the Stark kids gone: "You let a half-wit escape with a cripple?" Well, when you put it That way ... his guard, who looks a bit like Guy Branum, protests, so Theon shuts him up with a boot in the face and orders that they release the hounds!
The hounds soon catch up with Maester Luwin (Donald Sumpter), who tells Theon to let the boys go. Theon chirps, "Don't look so grim - it's just a game!

If there's anything that unites the golden age of cable drama in the last decade or so, it's the way that their characters -- often the ones you're meant to be rooting for -- are responsible for some truly terrible, terrible things. On even the best network dramas -- "The Good Wife," to name probably the top of the tree right now -- the characters are fundamentally good people, who occasionally make mistakes. On cable, it tends to be a question of watching people we like slowly lose their souls via abominable acts, from Tony Soprano and Al Swearengen to Walter White and even Jimmy McNulty.
"Game of Thrones" tracks in a slightly clearer sense of good and evil: the Starks and their allies are pretty much on the side of the angels, while the Lannisters, Tyrion excluded, are very much not. But at the same time, the show's never...
