The best Martin Lawrence movies and TV shows started out thanks to his television roles, but he actually got his first big break thanks to Spike Lee. While he was mostly involved in boxing when he was in school, he started working as a comedian when he got out of school and actually began to make a living working standup shows. This led to Martin moving to New York City and joining The Improv, which got him a role on Star Search. That was his true big break, as it got him noticed in Hollywood.
This earned him the attention of Spike Lee, who gave Lawrence his first movie role in the award-winning Do The Right Thing. After this, he got roles in movies like House Party and Boomerang, and he finally was able to get his own starring role when he signed on to star in the comedy sitcom Martin.

A sequel to Frank Miller's classic Ronin is coming soon. Ronin was Miller and artist Lynn Varley's six-part series that ran from 1983 to 1984 about a reincarnated samurai who reawakens in a dystopian New York City with the opportunity to kill the reincarnation of his master's killer. The series launched to critical acclaim and accolades.
40 years after the last issue of Ronin hit shelves, Ronin Rising is set to follow up on the classic tale, with Frank Miller returning to the writer's chair and Philip Tan and Daniel Henriques joining him as artists. Further below, readers can find a preview of the panels to come in the hotly anticipated sequel, arriving on October 8.
Anticipation for Ronin Rising has been building since the initial launch of Frank Miller Presents in 2022. Now, that vision is finally coming to fruition.

Marvel Comics has promised that a "brutal" era of Iron Man storytelling begins this October courtesy of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author Spencer Ackerman.
He's teaming up with rising star artist Julius Ohta to build an epic new run of Marvel's Armored Avenger and, like all of Marvel's major launches, Iron Man #1 is getting a special Foil Variant Cover that you can check out below.
Illustrated by acclaimed artist Philip Tan, the piece depicts Tony emerging from the rubble of his past suits in his new armour. Dubbed the "Improvised Iron Man," we'll see it assembled throughout the series as Tony does what he does best: tinkering and upgrading it to counter anything the world throws at him.
In the new series, Roxxon and A.I.M. team up to take on Stark Unlimited. However, they're ready for the old Tony Stark. This one? He's a lot angrier than he used to be.

"Deadpool and Wolverine" — which is due out on July 26, 2024 — will mark Hugh Jackman's return as Wolverine after a seven year hiatus. (I remember vividly when 2017's "Logan" was supposed to be his final bow.)
Ever since superhero movies have become Marvel and DC's biggest cultural footprints, the comics have had the mandate to follow their lead. The adaptations point the direction of the source material, not the other way around.
Take how, in the 2010s, Marvel relegated the X-Men from the top shelf to the dustbin because 20th Century Fox owned the mutants' movie rights. Once Marvel's parent company Disney acquired Fox (and the X-Men with it) in 2019, the X-Men were raised back up. "Deadpool and Wolverine" is the greatest culmination of that merger yet, with the film's trailers suggesting the Merc with a Mouth is entering the MCU full-throttle — and bringing the rest of Fox's Marvel films along with him.

Morrison and Quitely's rejected Robin design exudes undeniable badassery and deserve a second chance in comics. The gray and yellow Robin Suit remains exceptional and distinctive, aligning perfectly with Damian Wayne's character. Batman & Robin Vol. 1: Batman Reborn includes a guided tour of the artistic process behind the volume.
Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely’s rejected Robin concept art gifted Damian Wayne with one of his best costumes to date. However, the Boy Wonder wasn’t the sole recipient of a redesign from these comic legends; the Dark Knight himself also underwent a transformation. Sadly, Morrison and Quitely’s Batman concept art was ultimately rejected. Nonetheless, the undeniable truth remains that these designs are striking and definitely warrant a second chance in future comics.

Red Hood's cringy catchphrase, "Let the punishment fit the crime!" was rightfully shut down by Nightwing. Jason Todd's catchphrase is seen in Batman & Robin Vol. 1: Batman Reborn. Despite the corniness, his catchphrase reflects his moral code as judge, jury, and executioner.
As Red Hood's new solo series, Red Hood: The Hill, gains momentum, it's an opportune moment to reflect on Jason Todd's character evolution, including some of his most cringe-worthy moments that were luckily witnessed and curbed by Nightwing. Among Jason's cringiest moments was his repetitive use of a catchphrase so corny that not even Dick Grayson, the pun-master himself, could overlook it.

At various times in DC Comics history, the Joker has donned his own version of the Batsuit; from cosplaying as Batman, to Dark Multiverse versions of Bruce Wayne who became the "Batman Who Laughs." In a twisted turn, Joker was even given his very own Batsuit by Batman, enhancing his durability and weaponizing him against superpowered zombies. The Joker's war suit, equipped with Wayne Tech, granted him night vision, an explosive batarang, and the ability to disrupt communication lines as he wreaked havoc on Gotham.
The Joker is one of the most visually striking characters to have ever appeared in comics. His immediately recognizable appearance is one of the things that originally helped him stand out from other comic villains at the time. While early-career Batman was mostly facing gangsters or mad scientists, Joker hit the scene in a clean purple suit, rocking neon green hair, and pale white skin.

Next year marks Wolverine’s 50th anniversary and Marvel is going all out for it, starting with Wolverine: Madripoor Knights. The five issue miniseries will feature Claremont’s return to a character he helped define, for a sequel to one of Wolverine’s most iconic stories.
Marvel released more information about Wolverine: Madripoor Knights on its website. The book will be written by Claremont, with art by Edgar Salazar and a cover by Philip Tan. Madripoor Knights is a sequel to Uncanny X-Men #268. This legendary issue, which was also Jim Lee’s debut on X-Men art duties, was set during World War II, and featured a team-up between Wolverine, Captain America and a young Black Widow. The DC Universe is full of absurd criminals, but none of them is as unhinged as the Joker. His insanity has, time and time again, helped him escape death row; if he isn't in his right mind, he isn't fit to stand trial for his crimes. But DC once revealed that the Joker's biggest secret is that he's entirely sane.
The Joker is one of the most dangerous comic-book villains to ever exist: he has been an iconic rival to Batman for almost one hundred years, and he has fought heroes across the DC Universe. The Joker has even taken on Superman. Despite the countless people Joker has killed — and the numerous times he's been caught — he has never been sentenced to the death penalty. In fact, Joker has driven doctors insane due to his own insanity. If Joker isn't responsible for his actions then he surely can't be punished for them.

Marvel is finally giving fans the most fantastic symbiote yet: Venom-Thing. The symbiote has a history with the Fantastic Four, and August’s What If? Dark: Venom #1 looks at that history, showing what might have happened if the Venom symbiote, which was held for study at the Baxter Building after being shunned by Spider-Man, had escaped and bonded with someone other than Eddie Brock–namely Benjamin Grimm aka the Thing.
Marvel has unveiled a first look at What If? Dark: Venom #1, along with the other titles in the latest series of What If? comics. The one-shot will be written by Stephanie Phillips and drawn by Jethro Morales, with a cover by Philip Tan, shared below. The story kicks off when the Thing returns from space following the events of Secret Wars. He comes home to find a symbiote trapped in Mister Fantastic’s lab–and he is not sure what to think.

Marvel's Summer of Symbiotes approaches, as Venom's extended family prepare to overrun comic shelves everywhere. However, their most bizarre new target is one no-one expected - Marvel's iconic '90s swimsuit special, which showcased a range of heroes flexing in their best beachwear.
Marvel's promotional wraparound advertisement from Philip Tan, Scott Williams, and Brad Anderson pays homage to what came before yet finds the symbiotes assembled several light years away on an alien world. Featured on the sneak peek cover are Scream, Black Cat, Red Goblin, Carnage, Agent Venom, Sleeper, a non-Symbiote Eddie Brock, and a host of other Klyntar heroes, villains, and antiheroes. Even Jeff the Land Shark makes a subtle appearance.

Despite decades of mystery, one Masters of the Universe adaptation actually confirmed the real reason Hordak abducted the infant She-Ra. For the first two decades of her life, She-Ra grew up under Hordak’s oppressive thumb, rising through the ranks to become one of his most feared soldiers. Yet why was Hordak so obsessed with She-Ra in the first place? Why did he go out of his way to kidnap and corrupt her? In 2013’s He-Man and the Masters of the Universe #5, first published by DC Comics, readers learn the truth.
By the mid-1980s, the Masters of the Universe toy-line was a top-seller, spurred in part by a highly successful cartoon - no coincidence, as the cartoon was created precisely to help sell the toys. Mattel, the toys’ manufacturer, decided to create a spin-off line, this one aimed at young girls. She-Ra: Princess of Power debuted in 1985 and was an immediate success.

Warning! Contains spoilers for Joker: The Man Who Stopped Laughing #5!Many DC Universe characters who have worked with or for Batman have donned their own Batsuit, but one of the most surprising characters who have a history of wearing a Batsuit is none other than the Joker.
The Joker has been one of Batman's longest and most recurring enemies. Whenever there is a major event in Batman's life, it is almost always tied to the Joker. And just like Batman, over the years of their fighting, Joker has continually updated his appearance, but one of the Joker's strangest fashion choices is how he keeps on wearing Batsuits. This was most recently seen by readers in Joker: The Man Who Stopped Laughing #5 by Matthew Rosenberg and Carmine Di Giandomenico.

The DC Universe is full of hundreds of unique heroes and villains, sometimes these characters have managed to turn over a new leaf, for better or worse, such as when Hal Jordan became the villain Paragon, but one of the most shocking things DC did in 2022 was potentially having Joker turn over a new leaf as an anti-hero.
The Joker has been one of the most brutal villains in comic book history for almost as long as he's been in comic books. Joker has never really made any attempts to be anything he wasn't. Even from his first appearance, he was portrayed as a brutal serial killer, and he's mostly only gotten worse as time has gone on. While Joker has varied what heroes he targets, sometimes even going after Superman, the Joker is one of DC's darkest villains, but recently his aims have been tinged at least a bit more heroic.

Stop the presses! Like you or I, James Gunn likes to read! Imagine a world where someone can leave a pile of books atop their coffee table without the internet taking it as a sign of things to come. Look, it’s the day before New Year’s Eve, and this is entertaining. Join me as I mine one of Gunn’s recent tweets to report on a thing that isn’t happening. Recently, someone spotted three volumes of Grant Morrison’s iconic Batman and Robin comic book series atop Gunn’s coffee table. Naturally, people started thinking the books could be source material for an upcoming project from DC Films. It’s not an impossible leap, but Gunn says it’s not happening.
Yes, that’s what they were. No, they weren’t meant as a hint. Two of the volumes (2 & 3) just happened to be on my coffee table.

Marvel's Shang-Chi is getting a brand-new costume and look that gives the popular hero a demonic new form. As part of the upcoming Demonized variant covers that will release from Marvel Comics in the next few months, Shang-Chi is among the heroes whose current costume and look are getting a dark makeover. In the art from Philip Tan, Shang-Chi becomes nearly unrecognizable as sinister forces take the hero over.
Since debuting in Special Marvel Edition #15 by Steve Englehart and Jim Starlin from Marvel Comics in 1973, Shang-Chi has sported relatively simple costumes compared to his fellow heroes. From wearing a red and gold karate-inspired look in his earliest appearances, a red and black bodysuit he wore while joining the Avengers, to his current costume, where he wears a red and green costume accented with golden dragon scales, Shang-Chi has gone through several successful and unsuccessful makeovers. However, Shang-Chi's new Demonized costume...

Marvel's Wolverine is getting a demon upgrade, as a new variant cover from Ryan Stegman features the popular X-Men hero as you've never seen him before. In the Demonized variant starring Logan from Marvel Comics, the hero trades in his usual costume for a much darker look, as Wolverine becomes a demon as his appearance and claws get a rebar-like armor that transforms the mutant into a much more sinister version of his usual self.
While Wolverine has one of the most classic looks in comics, the X-Men hero has taken on some different and horrifying appearances, costumes, and armors in his history in the pages of Marvel Comics. From Wolverine's most feral form, which completely changed how he looked, to when Logan became unrecognizable after becoming Apocalypse's Horseman of Death, Marvel hasn't been afraid to change the hero's look when the story called for it. Netflix will no longer distribute and Blumhouse Productions will no longer produce “Absolute Dominion,” a science-fiction martial arts drama from filmmaker Lexi Alexander.
Netflix greenlit the movie earlier this year, with Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Television banner on board to produce. It’s unclear why the two companies departed “Absolute Dominion,” but the filmmaking team is seeking new distribution. Principal photography took place this spring in Nevada. The project already wrapped filming, and it is currently in post production.
“Bill and Ted” actor Alex Winter, Patton Oswalt and newcomer Désiré Mia star in the violent, post-apocalyptic film, which takes place in 2085 A.D. after the world has been destroyed by religious warfare. Desperate to save humanity, global governing forces host a gripping, no-holds-barred, martial arts tournament. The last fighter standing wins Absolute Dominion for one faith.

This article contains Fistful of Vengeance spoilers.
“Like the Avengers…but Asian.”
When Tommy (Lawrence Kao) quips this line in a Fistful of Vengeance, it’s almost meta. Fistful of Vengeance is the feature film sequel to Netflix’s 2019 10-episode martial arts driven series Wu Assassins. It is produced in the same spirit as Fox’s Firefly and Serenity or Netflix’s own Sense8 by the Wachowskis (which also had a lot of martial arts.)
Beyond Tommy, two other Wu Assassins leads reappear in Fistful of Vengeance. Indonesian martial arts superstar Iko Uwais reprises his role as Kai Jin, the San Francisco Chinatown chef and last incarnation of the Wu Assassin, an eternal superhero warrior out to save the world. Also there’s Lu (Lewis Tan), a mere mortal like Tommy but with ridiculous Kung Fu skills. Wu Assassins was a martial arts driven show, reminiscent of AMC’s Into the Badlands,...

Outside of acting, Tan competed as an amateur fighter in Muay Thai and trained in Kung Fu, Jiu-Jitsu, and Japanese sword. “Mortal Kombat,” which hits theaters and HBO Max on April 23, marks Lewis Tan’s first time leading a major blockbuster — and it’s not a role he took on lightly.
Tan, a martial artist and actor who performs his own stunts in action-heavy roles in “Iron Fist,” “Into the Badlands,” “Wu Assassins” and “Deadpool 2,” has a legacy to protect. His father, Philip Tan, is also a martial artist and stunt coordinator, and Lewis has prided himself on choosing roles that present the stunts authentically.
Your character, Cole Young, is not one that’s in the games. Tell us about him.
If you’re familiar with the game, you know that the game started with only a few characters, and now the game has expanded into a “Mortal Kombat” universe if you will, and there’s over 100 characters. So, in the movie, we wanted to introduce something new and at...

“Respect is the word I just kept using over and over,” says Simon McQuoid about his directorial debut, the Mortal Kombat movie reboot. “Elevate and respect the material. So it was all just born out of respect for the characters.”
For McQuoid, it’s a challenging beginning to take on such a long-running and venerated franchise. Since 1992, there have been 14 editions of the video game, two animated films, two live action films, an animated series, live actions series for TV and the web, a novelization, and even a live stage show. McQuoid and 30+ year industry veteran, producer Todd Garner, sat down with Den of Geek and other members of the press for a virtual roundtable to discuss making a movie based on one of the most successful fighting games ever.
Cole Young’s Place in Mortal Kombat Lore
This version of Mortal Kombat is completely new, not beholden to stories told in the previous films.
