Photo: 'Funny Boy'/Netflix 'Funny Boy' opens with an image of Sri Lanka that evokes paradise. Children navigate through pockets of shade among cavernous palms, like fawns prancing through the forest, as they run along the sand of an azure seashore. We see a mock bridal procession led by our young protagonist Arjie (Arush Nand), who wears bright red lipstick and a sari to match. His younger sister Sonali (Araina Nand) runs alongside him, dressed in a groom’s suit--trailing behind them are their girl cousins. Arriving at their family’s estate, where much of the film takes place, they continue the ceremony. One of the cousins officiates as Arjie and Sonali exchange their “I do’s” and kiss each other on the cheek. The bridal party erupts in applause and cheers, tossing flower petals into the air, but cousin Tanuja (Thenaya Senarie Geeganage), a visitor from England,...

One of the finest poets of 20th century Urdu literature, Majrooh Sultanpuri was born on this day 101 years ago. His contribution to the Hindi film industry as a lyricist is also phenomenal, so much so that any writing or research work on the Bollywood music scene would be incomplete without his mention.
Born Asrar ul Hassan Khan on October 1, 1919 in Sultanpur, currently in Uttar Pradesh. Sultanpuri has penned countless memorable songs in his career spanning six decades, and has collaborated with talented musicians spanning generations, from Sachin Dev Burman to Rahul Dev Burman to Jatin-Lalit. He has been honoured with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award among numerous other recognitions.
It is impossible to sum up such a genius' oeuvre in a list of a few songs. Ians takes a look into some of Majrooh's popular songs that you may want to hum while you think of the great creative artiste.

Shimla Mirchi
Starring Hema Malini,Rajkummar Rao, Rakul Preet Singh
Directed by Ramesh Sippy
Rajkummar Rao never fights shy of playing shy characters. There is an innate diffidence in his personality that renders itself effectively to characters who are afraid of expressing themselves lest they get hurt.
This time it’s the audience that gets hurt.Badly. Don’t get me wrong. Five years ago maverick moviemaking genius Ramesh Sippy (he once upon a time made a small film called Sholay) made a teekhi, tadka-wali romantic film about tender misalliances. It was all about Raj falling for Rakul Preet Singh(her makeup, attitude all wrong) whose mom Hema Malini misreads the love signals.
Giggle giggle.
One fine day in January 2020 the producers decided to release the damn thing anyhow. Why would they do this disservice to three such talented souls Sippy, Rao and Hema Malini? That’s another story altogether.

The actress began with talking about the three-year gap between projects and the fact that this new film is another “comeback film”. There was of course, The Incredibles 2, where she provided the voice of Elastigirl earlier in the year, but it has been 3 years between her presence on the silver screen in Dilwale and Helicopter Eela. “According to the media I am always returning after a hiatus! A Death In The Gunj
Starring Vikrant Massey, Kalki Koechlin, Ranvir Shorey, Gulshan Devaiah, Tillotama Shome, Om Puri, Tanuja
Written & Directed by Konkona Sen Sharma
It’s hard to define the mood of unrehearsed foreboding and a vague sense of doom that is built into Konkona Sen Sharma’s fragile yet ferocious family-on-a-disastrous-hillstation-holiday film.
If one didn’t know better, one would classify A Death In The Gunj as a whodunit. An Agatha Christie novel condensed into two hours of layered crisp crunchy but seemingly pointless conversations where families on a lazy vacation talk nonsense, play silly games evoking dead spirits (please!) while kids and pets run around in the large crumbling family home as the house-help grumbles about the sudden surge in domestic responsibilities.
It’s a familiar scenario for a tense exploration of fissures and fractures in the joint-family system. Satyajit Ray’s Aranyar Din Ratri, more recently...

Trinity Films, a franchise company tied to Eros Entertainment, helmed by the eminently enterprising Ajit Thakur, is all set to remake the 1971 mega-blockbuster Haathi Mere Saathi. Said to be the biggest hit of Rajesh Khanna's blockbuster career, Haathi Mere Saathi told the story of the intense relationship between a man and his pet elephant. The film broke all box office records and celebrated a 'diamond' jubilee (a 100-week run) in many centres.
Haathi Mere Saathi was directed by Tamil director M A Thurumugham. The remake will be directed by another Tamil director Prabhu Solomon.
However, it won't be easy to do a remake of a film where an animal plays a pivotal role, warns the chief of the censor board Pahlaj Nihalani.
"The Animal Welfare board is constantly monitoring everything to do with animals in our films. What was acceptable 45 years ago won't be acceptable today. In the original...

Back in 1971, the Rajesh Khanna, Tanuja starrer Haathi Mere Saathi enthralled the audience on the big screen, now decades later we hear that Trinity Pictures, a franchise of Eros International will be attempting a modern telling of the story.
While the said film will not essentially be a remake of the 1971 film, it is learnt that it will instead be based on similar lines of friendship between a human and an animal. Further we hear that Haathi Mere Saathi will in fact be used only as a reference point and the remake will be a modern-day retelling that will be directed by South filmmaker, Prabhu Solomon.
Expected to go on floors later this year, the yet untitled film will feature a fresh story with more action than its predecessor.

Starring Ajay Devgn, Sonakshi Sinha, Sanjay Dutt, Juhi Chawla, Tanuja, Mukul Dev, Vindoo Dara Singh
Directed by Ashwani Dhir
Every time Vindoo Dara Singh who plays a part of an extended patriarchal Punjabi parivaar in the Sikh heartland, opens his mouth to speak, he is shushed down by others saying, ‘Silencer lagaa’.
By God, at times you feel this loud, flamboyant, ostentatious yet – all right, admit it – sinfully engaging film should just pipe down. There is so much that’s noisy about this film. And we aren’t talking about Sandeep Chowta’s over-accented background score. Yet it’s never unpleasant noise.
Son Of Sardaar takes us straightaway into the core of a family feud in Punjab where Sanjay Dutt, playing a goofy oddball of a Punjabi patriarch as only he can, wants our affable Sardarji Ajay Devgn dead to fulfil an ancestral vendetta.
Let me warn you right away...

In a candid interview with Toi, she discussed how proud she is about her Bengali heritage and her active passion for Bengali culture. Although her mother and former actress Tanuja is Maharashtrian, her late father Shomu Mukherjee was Bengali. When asked about what Bengali things she is into the most, she replied with the following answer: “I am typically Bong in my sweet habits. I love Gojas that my aunt makes, Mishti Doi and Patali Gur from a specific place in Kolkata. Every year, I get 5kgs of the Patali Gur and keep it in my fridge through the year.”
