With Seeds, Canadian Mohawk actor Kaniehtiio Horn has embraced the indigenous horror-thriller genre — with some added comedy.

“I didn’t want to make a trauma movie,” the Reservation Dogs actor tells The Hollywood Reporter about her directorial debut, a genre-bending home invasion film she wrote, stars in and produced. And she wants her world premiere audience at the Toronto Film Festival to laugh.

Heartily. And in the right places. Horn says laughter abounds in indigenous culture and communities — however varied are the tribes and language groups. That’s especially laughing with, and not being laughed at: “Oh my God, we are funny! We can make fun of each other, but it’s always in a teasing way. It’s always in a loving way.”

No one knew how many difficulties existed in the fictional town of Letterkenny when the show revolving around small-town hicks, hockey players and skids launched on Super Bowl Sunday 2016. As it turns out, there were enough “Letterkenny Problems” not only to change the lives of all those involved, but to transform the Canadian TV landscape.

When “Letterkenny” cracks open its final six-pack of episodes Dec. 25 on the Canadian streaming service Crave (and on Dec. 26 on Hulu), it ends an era that includes 74 episodes, seven specials, five live tours, branded clothing and booze, Canadian Screen Awards victories, and a spinoff, “Shoresy,” which wraps filming on its third season in Sudbury, Ont. this month.

Shoresy, the Letterkenny spin-off, will return to Hulu for a six-episode second season.

The series follows the foul-mouthed Shoresy (Jared Keeso) and the embattled Sudbury Blueberry Bulldogs as they continue their quest to never lose again. Production is set to begin in Sudbury, Ontario this spring.

Hulu announced “Shoresy,” a spin-off of the Canadian sitcom “Letterkenny,” will return exclusively to the streaming service for a six-episode second season.

Season 1 of the comedy, also a six-episode endeavor, debuted on Hulu in May 2022. The series followed the foul-mouthed fan favorite Shoresy (Jared Keeso) who moved to Sudbury, Northern Ontario, to help the struggling ice hockey team entitled the Sudbury Blueberry Bulldogs. The triple-a-level ice hockey team is continuing its quest to never lose again.

“Letterkenny” was created by Keeso, along with Jacob Tierney, and started as the YouTube series “Letterkenny Problems.” Crave brought the series to television, premiering in Feb. 2016. Unforgettable Gala, which bills itself as the nation’s longest-running Asian Pacific Islander awards show, is set to celebrate its 20th annual ceremony with actor Eugene Cordero serving as host. Cordero’s hosting stint will be the first time a Filipino American has emceed the entertainment gala. Apple TV Plus announced that “The Afterparty” will premiere on Jan. 28 with three episodes. The following five episode will debut weekly on Fridays.

The series is an ensemble comedy about a murder mystery set at a high school reunion. Each episode explores the alibi of a different character with visuals and film references to match each of their perspectives. Stars include Tiffany Haddish, Sam Richardson, Zoë Chao, Ben Schwartz, Ike Barinholtz, Ilana Glazer, Jamie Demetriou and Dave Franco.

Chris Miller serves as creator, director and showrunner, and executive produces with Phil Lord through their production banner Lord Miller. Anthony King also executive produces, and Lord Miller’s vice president of television Aubrey Lee serves as a producer. “The Afterparty” is produced by TriStar TV and Sony Pictures Television as part of Lord and Miller’s five-year overall deal.

Norman Lear celebrated the dawn of his second century on the planet by probably accomplishing more than you did in the past month. Not only did he gather with family and friends, but Lear also published an op-ed in The Washington Post, warning of the erosion of voting rights in America, and TBS sealed a deal to develop a new version of his iconic 1970s late-night soap “Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman.”

“How about that,” said Lear, on the phone from New York. “I can’t overstate how exciting I find that.”

Brent Miller, who runs Lear’s Act III production company, credited Sony for “for really pushing through in the way they have. To make sure that we could close that [TBS] deal right on his birthday was a nice gift.” The updated show is set to star Emily Hampshire (“Schitt’s Creek”) in the title role; Hampshire and Jacob Tierney (“Letterkenny”) are writing and executive producing.

The reboot of Norman Lear’s “Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman” will be on TBS, which is developing a new version of the classic sitcom starring “Schitt’s Creek” alum Emily Hampshire.

Hampshire will co-write and executive produce along with “Letterkenny” creator Jacob Tierney, who would serve as showrunner. Lear would be a producer as well, via his and Brent Miller’s Act III Productions.

Exclusive: Schitt’s Creek star Emily Hampshire is joining Amazon UK Original series The Rig, we can reveal.

The six-part thriller, which will be directed by Line of Duty and Bodyguard director John Strickland, is set to shoot in Scotland later this month on an oil rig and at FirstStage Studios in Edinburgh. It will be the first Amazon Original to shoot exclusively in Scotland.

The drama will be set on the Kishorn Bravo oil rig, stationed off the Scottish coast in the dangerous waters of the North Sea. When the crew is due to return to the mainland, a mysterious and all-enveloping fog rolls through and they find themselves cut off from all communication with the shore and the outside world. As the rig is hit by massive tremors, the crew endeavor to discover what’s driving the unknown force. But a major accident forces them to ask questions about who they can really trust.

Norman Lear accepted the Carol Burnett Award on Sunday’s Golden Globes, and imparted some wisdom on longevity as he prepares to celebrate his 99th birthday this year.

“At close to 99, I can tell you that I have never lived alone,” he said in his acceptance speech. “I have never laughed alone and that has as much to do with my being here today as anything else I know.”

In his 2014 memoir “Even This I Get to Experience,” TV legend Norman Lear writes about the busiest period of his life as a time of “joyful stress.”

The 1970s were the pinnacle of Lear’s success as an uber producer, and at one point he simultaneously had eight shows on the air — including such landmark sitcoms as “All in the Family,” “One Day at a Time,” “Sanford and Son,” “Good Times,” “Maude,” “The Jeffersons” and “Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman.”

“Even doing your best work and enjoying the results of that, there is a reasonable amount to a great amount of stress,” Lear tells Variety. “And if one can learn to accept that joyfully, one can be stressed and understand that he or she is having a good time also. And so, I’ve enjoyed an awful lot of that through my career.”

Norman Lear’s Act III Prods. and Sony Pictures TV have landed a pair of projects in development at Amazon’s IMDb TV, including one starring Laverne Cox and comedian George Wallace.

Lear and his production partner Brent Miller are executive producers on “Clean Slate” and “Lotería,” which are set up at the quickly growing IMDb TV, which is the premium free streaming service complement to Amazon’s subscription Prime Video service.

Both projects are original ideas about family navigating unique challenges to their relationships: “Clean Slate,” which comes from Cox, Wallace and Dan Ewen, centers on car wash owner Henry (Wallace), whose estranged child comes home to Alabama after 17 years. But he must do some soul searching as he comes to terms with the fact that his adult child is a trans woman, Desiree (Cox).

Ewen is executive producer and showrunner on the half-hour comedy, while Cox also serves as executive producer.

Schitt’s Creek vet Emily Hampshire has booked herself a trip to Fernwood, Ohio, to star in a remake of Norman Lear’s Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman.

The original syndicated series, which ran weeknights from January 1976 to July 1977, was a soap opera sendup that starred Louise Lasser as a housewife who attempted to cope with various bizarre and violent incidents occurring around her. Lasser earned an Emmy nod for the role in ’76, in a Special Classification of Outstanding Program and Individual Achievement. (In July 1977, the offshoot Fernwood 2 Night, a talk show spoof starring Martin Mull and Fred Willard, premiered and ran through September.

Another classic Norman Lear TV series is getting a remake. Sony TV is in development on a new version of Lear’s “Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman” that would star “Schitt’s Creek” alum Emily Hampshire.

It’s the latest series remake to come out of the Lear cannon, following the recent critically acclaimed reimagining of “One Day at a Time,” and an animated take on “Good Times” that is currently in the works. Hulu on Monday released a sneak peek of Letterkenny‘s Season 9 premiere, which will drop on Saturday, Dec. 26, along with the season’s six other episodes.

Fans of Letterkenny will get a holiday treat from Hulu this year: The comedy’s ninth season is set to drop on Saturday, Dec. 26, the streamer announced Wednesday.

Season 9 spans seven episodes, all of which will drop on the show’s release date. Per Hulu’s official synopsis, the new installments will feature Michelle Mylett’s Katy taking her “scorched earth dating strategy” back to Letterkenny, while Gail (Lisa Codrington) gets some action of her own. Meanwhile, the Hockey Players learn about Judaism, “and the whole town gets really into sleepover activities like movies, board games and girl talk.”

New Metric Media, the Toronto and Los Angeles-based producers of award-winning Hulu/Crave comedy series “Letterkenny” and Netflix/CityTV drama “Bad Blood,” has partnered with talent agency The Feldman Agency to launch a live entertainment company.

Titled Tourbo, the new entity will focus on developing premium popular brands that currently exist as screen-based I.P., podcasts and online content as live touring entertainment for the global stage. The two companies have already tasted success in this regard, having first worked together to bring “Letterkenny Live!,” a 90-minute touring comedy experience based on the series, to North American audiences.

The companies said this success, coupled with the growing demand from creators, brands and audiences for alternative programming, led to the formation of Tourbo.

The team behind Canadian cult comedy Letterkenny are looking for international hicks, skids and hockey players as they search for global remake deals.

New Metric Media, which produces the comedy, and production partner Bell Media, have brought former Electus and Global Road Television exec Eli Shibley on board to lead these format partnerships.

Shibley, who founded Major Film & Television, is looking to close format deals in territories including Latin America, Nordics, Spain, Benelux, Russia, Ukraine, and Cis. This comes after New Metric Media and WildBrain closed a recent German format deal with Studio’s Imago TV Film und Fernsehproduktion.

Shibley previously managed international co-productions, partnerships, and distribution for Global Road Television and before that he was the Senior Vice President of International Distribution and Co-Productions at Ben Silverman’s Electus.

Hulu announced that it has acquired the exclusive U.S. rights to the cult hit Canadian comedy series, meaning when the seventh season debuts on Oct. 14, it will do so as a Hulu original, as will all future seasons of the show. Hulu already had the rights to the show’s past seasons.

Created by and starring Jared Keeso, the half-hour comedy revolves around the inhabitants of the fictional town of Letterkenny, Ontario. It focuses on the different groups who make up the town, namely the hicks, skids, Christians, and hockey players. In addition to Keeso, the series stars Nathan Dales, Michelle Mylett, K Trevor Wilson, Dylan Playfair, Andrew Herr, Tyler Johnston, Evan Stern, Mark Forward, and Tiio Horn. Jacob Tierney, who developed the show with Keeso and has directed much of the series, also stars.

Zylka is best known for his role as Tom Garvey in HBO’s critically acclaimed drama The Leftovers. His credits also include playing Joey Donner in Freeform’s 10 Things I Hate About You as well as CW’s The Circle.

Most recently, Zylka appeared alongside the Xavier Dolan-directed The Death and Life of John F. Donovan. Co-written by Dolan and Jacob Tierney, the feature also stars Kit Harington, Natalie Portman, Susan Sarandon, Thandie Newton, Jacob Tremblay and Kathy Bates. He also appeared in Gregg Araki’s Kaboom and played Flash Thompson in The Amazing Spider-Man.

The eighth annual Atx Television Festival has added panels for “One Day at a Time,” “Veronica Mars,” “Into the Dark: Culture Shock” and “Letterkenny” to its lineup, Variety has learned exclusively.

Additionally, Beau Willimon will return to host his own discussion event and join a panel about playwrights moving to the small screen medium.

Heading down to Austin, Texas for the “One Day at a Time” panel this year will be executive producer Mike Royce and cast members Justina Machado, Isabella Gomez, Todd Grinnell and Stephen Tobolowsky. This marks Machado and Gomez’ second consecutive years with the show at the festival, as the 2017 event also featured a panel discussion for the series. “One Day at a Time,” a reboot of the classic family sitcom of the same name, was produced by Sony Pictures Television and ran for three seasons on Netflix. It was also executive produced by Norman Lear and Gloria Calderon Kellett.

Canadian film and television producer Kevin Tierney died on Saturday in Montreal after a battle with cancer. He was 67.

Actor Jacob Tierney, Kevin’s son, announced the news on Instagram saying, “My dad, the amazing Kevin Tierney, left us this morning at 4:15. My sister, mom and I were all there.”

Tierney was best known for the 2006 buddy movie Bon Cop, Bad Cop starring Patrick Huard and Colm Feore. The bilingual film went on to win numerous awards and became the highest grossing Canadian movie of all time domestically.

In addition to Bon Cop, Bad Cop, Tierney also wrote and directed the bilingual comedy French Immersion in 2011. He collaborated with his son Jacob on Twist starring Nick Stahl and The Trotsky starring Jay Baruchel. His other film credits include Serveuses demandées and Love and Savagery.
