Began his career in 1918 at the age of 16 and worked as a clapper boy and camera assistant before graduating to cinematographer in 1926. Tover established himself as one of the foremost cinematographers of the 1940's and 50's in Hollywood with his work on productions such as "I'm No Angel" (1933), "Hold Back the Dawn" (1941), "The Snake Pit" (1948), "The Heiress" (1949), "The Day the Earth Stood Still" (1951), "The Sun also Rises" (1957), "Blue Denim" (1959) and "From the Terrace" (1960).
