Navajo police lieutenant Joe Leaphorn, played by Zahn McClarnon, is haunted by a bogeyman from his childhood in the third season teaser trailer for AMC’s Dark Winds, which dropped on Friday.
Leaphorn appears badgered by his demons after leaving B.J. Vines (John Diehl) in the desert to freeze to death during the second season of the noir thriller. “When I was a boy, when I went to school, we were taught that the monsters walked the Earth. When you kill a man, he’s bound to you. I’ve accepted it. And I am prepared to go on living with it, every day,” Leaphorn reveals in the third season trailer.
That’s followed by Tribal Police officer Jimmy Chee (Kiowa Gordon) appearing to try, without success, to get a severely wounded Leaphorn on the phone as his partner confronts a monster trying to stalk and kill him.

In the early days, before movies became talkies, it was easy to show foreign films in the USA. Just insert new title cards in English, and film fans in St. Louis could watch and understand the latest offering from France or Germany. But then sound came and changed everything.
Of course, distributors in the United States could add subtitles or dub in new voices, but if they really wanted to sell the movie to an American audience, they could also just go ahead and make a new, English-language version.
Whether it is repurposing the Japanese classic Rashomon as The Outrage or taking Spain’s Abre los ojos and turning it into Vanilla Sky, producers in the USA are constantly scouring the globe for some hot property to acquire, rewrite, recast, and in so doing, capture a whole new audience.

People really can't seem to get enough of Taylor Sheridan. The multi-hyphenate writer-actor-director-producer is the creator of the "Yellowstone" television franchise, which mostly follow the Dutton family of ranchers over multiple generations, with a few interesting detours. While he had worked as an actor for years (even starring in an episode of "Star Trek: Enterprise") and even earned an Academy Award nomination for his screenplay for the excellent 2016 neo-Western "Hell or High Water," "Yellowstone" is what made Sheridan a household name. He's since gone on to create the hit series "Tulsa King," starring Sylvester Stallone as a mafia capo. Basically everything the man touches is streaming gold, and now another of his works is finding new eyes on home video.
Just before "Hell or High Water" showed everyone just how good Chris Pine and Ben Foster were at delivering hard-boiled western dialogue, Sheridan showed everyone just what he could do...

Xolo Mariduea in Blue Beetle is one of the best superhero castings in recent memory. His performance has the right balance of humor and heart for the fledging hero Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle, and Mariduea is perhaps the film's biggest asset. Though Blue Beetle ultimately underperformed at the box office, it fared more favorably with critics and fans, earning a 77% critic score and a 91% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie is a fun ride that does its source material justice, pun unintended.
Blue Beetle follows Jaime after he accidentally bonds with an alien scarab that gives him superpowers. Directed by Angel Manuel Soto, it also stars George Lopez, Becky G, Bruna Marquezine, Damin Alczar, Adriana Barraz, Harvey Guilln, Raoul Max Trujillo, and Susan Sarandon. According to Soto, Mariduea was always his top choice to play Jaime. The director stated: "His persona is pretty much the character of Jaime Reyes.

The DC Universe's vast cinematic history has led to several heroes receiving box office success, but how do they rank against each other? DC's live-action feature film history stretches back to 1951, with Superman and the Mole-Men kickstarting the long line of movies based on superheroes in the DC world. Since then, there have been several franchises featuring DC characters, from the order of movies in the Dceu to the many different franchises featuring the brand's most popular heroes.
There is no denying that some of the more commonly featured heroes include Batman and Superman, with many highly-ranked Batman movies being released over the decades. The same can be said for Superman, with the upcoming list of Dcu movies and shows from James Gunn continuing this trend by centering around the Man of Steel. However, where DC's other heroes are concerned, box office success has ranged from lucrative to flat-out unprofitable.

Dios mio! Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios are scuttling toward expanding the reach of Blue Beetle with a new animated series. Miguel Puga has been working on the Blue Beetle animated series since early 2024 and will act as the project’s showrunner and director, with Cristian Martinez writing the scripts.
Angel Manuel Soto and Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, the top talent behind DC’s 2023 film, return for the Blue Beetle animated series as executive producers alongside John Richard. Galen Vaisman, who helped executive produce the movie, oversees the animated adaptation. Casting for the project remains a mystery, though Deadline says DC is in contact with multiple stars from the live-action film. Although deals still need to be implemented, their response was positive.
The Blue Beetle animated series continues the story started in Soto’s live-action film. If audiences connect with the animated series, DC could continue the story in a new live-action sequel.

After working as an actor on shows like Sons of Anarchy and Veronica Mars, Taylor Sheridan bravely took a path toward realizing his creative potential and ended up in the writer’s chair. Cowboys & Aliens combines thrilling action and sci-fi adventure with comedic moments, making for an entertaining ride. The character Ella Swenson provides a surprising twist as an alien who sacrifices herself to save Earth, driven by her desire to prevent the same fate her planet suffered. Jake Lonergan's stolen gold creates animosity between him, his former gang, and Colonel Woodrow Dolarhyde, ultimately leading to a sense of forgiveness and absolution among the characters.
Based on the graphic novel by Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, Cowboys & Aliens follows Jake Lonergan (Daniel Craig), a criminal who awakens with no memories and with a strange bracelet on his wrist and its ending is surprisingly a bit complicated. It becomes clear that Lonergan is an outlaw who's guilty of many crimes and who many people would rather see imprisoned. Warner Bros. is taking Blue Beetle to the Max. The DC superhero film, starring Xolo Maridueña as the insectile superhero, will start streaming on Max on Friday, November 17, as the platform announced in an X post. In the film, which hit theaters in August, Maridueña plays Jaime Reyes, a recent college grad who “returns home full of aspirations for his future… only to find that home is not quite as he left it,” as DC Studios explains. Jaime finds his calling, though, when the Scarab, an ancient relic of alien biotechnology, chooses him to be its symbiotic host, giving the young man an “incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers.” Written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (Miss Bala) and directed by Ángel Manuel Soto (Charm City Kings), Blue Beetle also features Adriana Barraza, Damián Alcázar, Raoul Max Trujillo, Susan Sarandon, and George Lopez. Blue Beetle director Ángel Manuel Soto aims to bring in The Reach as the villain for a potential sequel, adding more excitement and higher stakes to the DC character's story. The Reach is a formidable group in the DC Universe, possessing advanced technology and scarabs, which could lead to an epic battle between Blue Beetle and this evil empire. Blue Beetle 2 may potentially feature other Dcu heroes, as The Reach's possible invasion of Earth could prompt the appearance of Green Lanterns or other allies to assist Jaime in his fight.

Blue Beetle released as part of a series of DC movies with lackluster box office results, raising questions about its future in the DC Universe. The movie introduces Jaime Reyes, the third generation of Blue Beetle, who discovers an alien artifact and becomes a young hero facing conflicts with antagonist Victoria Kord and villain Carapax. Director Ángel Manuel Soto and James Gunn have expressed interest in continuing Jaime's story and finding a way for it to be a part of the new DC Universe, potentially in an Elseworlds side-franchise.
Blue Beetle released during a series of revelations about the Dceu and Dcu, raising a lot of questions about the status of the movie and whether its cast would continue their roles in the future. Blue Beetle was initially described as having the "first Dcu hero", though it was revealed it wouldn't be the first Dcu film, as this would instead be Superman: Legacy.

‘Blue Beetle,’ the latest and second-to-last Dceu movie, was released last August, and as it was anticipated, the movie didn’t really do well at the box office. Despite positive reviews from critics and audiences (78% on Tomatometer and 92% on Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes), the movie grossed only $120 million worldwide, which makes it the lowest-grossing Dceu movie ever, falling behind this year’s ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods,’ which grossed only $133 million.
Xolo Maridueña’s debut as the Blue Beetle received favorable criticism, and we can’t blame the movie for its commercial failure. It’s a fact that this movie was released at the worst possible time, and with everything going on around DC Studios and the ongoing strikes, this movie was never given a chance to succeed. Still, James Gunn previously said that he has plans for Maridueña’s Blue Beetle in the future of his Dcu, so...

Ángel Manuel Soto and Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer's "Blue Beetle" (check out our review here) may not have been a box office success, but the latest venture from DC Studios and one of the last films of the DC Cinematic Universe before James Gunn and Peter Safran revamp the studio is thankfully one of the most fun. Not to mention, it's also one of the rare instances where a superhero movie embraces cultural specificity, instead of just perpetuating the same ol' white stories over and over again. If you've yet to see the film, here's what to expect.

Blue Beetle emphasizes diversity, with a predominantly non-White cast and crew, reflecting the importance of authentic representation in the industry. The concept art for Blue Beetle was inspired by the source material, staying true to the comic book character while infusing practicality and realness into the design. The challenging task of designing the Blue Beetle suit required collaboration with the costume designer and a skilled manufacturing team to create a practical and visually striking design.

Blue Beetle director Ángel Manuel Soto is hopeful about the future of his characters and storylines, and the mere presence of the film’s mid-credit scene is a big reason why.

It had to happen sometime. After ruling the box office roost for four weekends, Barbie is falling to second place as DC’s superhero pic Blue Beetle takes the top spot.
Blue Beetle is on course to open to $25 million to $27 million in North America after earning $10 million Friday, including $3.3 million in previews. It remains to be seen what impact the looming hurricane has on grosses in Los Angeles, the movie’s top market, and other parts of the area.
It’s understandable why the superhero pic may be feeling a little blue. Not only is Blue Beetle coming in behind expectations — heading into the weekend, tracking had suggested $28 million to $32 million — but also it is looking at one of the lowest openings ever for a title in the DC Extended Universe, not adjusted for inflation.

In Ángel Manuel Soto’s Blue Beetle, a teenager finds a magical contraption that he isn’t supposed to touch, stolen from an evil corporation trying to unlock its secrets, but once he does, he finds himself overtaken by a super-powered suit, which the corporation wants back at all costs. If that premise sounds at all unique, mysterious, and refreshing, welcome to planet Earth. But for anyone who’s seen even a single superhero movie released in the past 20 years, you’d be right to worry about that premise sounding like a harbinger of the dullness to come.

This article contains major spoilers for "Blue Beetle," so beware!
One of the biggest challenges superhero movies have is giving their protagonist a fully formed and intimidating villain to square off with. For every Thanos and Loki, there are a lot more subpar bad guys like Malekith the Accursed in "Thor: The Dark World" and Taskmaster in "Black Widow." DC Comics movies have had a somewhat better track record when it comes to crafting memorable villains, ranging from various versions of Joker to Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman and even Cillian Murphy's Scarecrow. But when it comes to "Blue Beetle," the film's antagonist doesn't quite stick the landing, even though there's an admirable effort to deliver something consequential.

One of the biggest challenges superhero movies have is giving their protagonist a fully formed and intimidating villain to square off with. For every Thanos and Loki, there are a lot more subpar bad guys like Malekith the Accursed in "Thor: The Dark World" and Taskmaster in "Black Widow." Warner Bros. Discovery’s “Blue Beetle” earned $3.3 million in Thursday previews. That positions the $120 million action fantasy, which was initially intended for an HBO Max release, for an opening weekend between $22 million and $33 million. Meanwhile, Universal’s “Strays” earned $1.1 million in Thursday previews. That includes $275,000 in early access showings. The “Blue Beetle” previews began at 2:00 pm while the “Strays” advance-day screenings began at 5:00 pm.
“Blue Beetle” is caught between multiple historical landmarks
The picture enters the weekend with solid reviews (79% fresh and 6.5/10 on Rotten Tomatoes) and decent online buzz. It has nonetheless had to promote itself without its writer or its stars due to the ongoing labor stoppages. The film is the first big-deal Marvel/DC superhero flick featuring a Latino protagonist, as embarrassing as that is in 2023. It stars the likes of Xolo Maridueña, Adriana Barraza, Damián Alcázar, Raoul Max Trujillo and George Lopez.

The family-friendly Blue Beetle has started off its box-office run with $3.3 million in Thursday evening previews.
Directed by Ángel Manuel Soto, the DC and Warner Bros. event pic is Hollywood’s first live-action superhero film built around a Latino protagonist and hopes to be a breakthrough movie for Latino audiences and for Latino representation in front of and behind the camera. And, according to The Hollywood Reporter’s review, it stands to put Cobra Kai recruit Xolo Maridueña “on the map as a young actor with the right spark to carry a new offshoot of the DC Extended Universe.”
Blue Beetle hopes to open in the $30 million range domestically and could have the bragging rights to toppling Barbie from the top spot after four weekends (talk about a superhero feat).
Adriana Barraza, Damían Alcázar, Raoul Max Trujillo, Susan Sarandon, George Lopez, Elpidia Carrillo, Bruna Marquezine, Belissa Escobedo, Harvey Guillén, and Becky G also star.

“Barbie” has reigned over the box office with a historic, hot-pink theatrical run over the past four weeks, but now it’s facing its biggest challenge yet: DC’s latest superhero film, “Blue Beetle.” The comic book film, led by “Cobra Kai” star Xolo Maridueña, picked up $3.3 million in Thursday previews at the domestic box office.
It’ll be a close box office battle between “Barbie” and “Blue Beetle” (both from Warner Bros.), but the latter is tipped to come out on top in its opening weekend. “Blue Beetle” is projected to make between $25 million to $32 million this weekend, while “Barbie” is poised to add $17 million to $20 million in its fifth week.
Directed by Ángel Manuel Soto, “Blue Beetle” is DC’s first superhero movie led by a Latino actor. Maridueña plays Jaime Reyes, a teen who stumbles upon a mysterious piece of alien technology that encases him in an advanced exoskeleton suit.
