Sometime in the 2000s, comedian Eddie Murphy began experiencing a career slump that, quite sadly, would remain with him for years. Ron Underwood's 2002 sci-fi comedy "The Adventures of Pluto Nash" was a notorious bomb, making only $7.1 million on a $100 million budget. Murphy's cinematic update of "I Spy" from the same year also lost money, and Murphy turned to making mediocre but popular kiddie flicks like "The Haunted Mansion" and "Daddy Day Care" to make ends meet.

What makes a performance “Oscar-worthy”? Many often leap to sustained emotional investment or comprehensively immersive transformations as the benchmark for success at the Academy Awards. But if the Oscars celebrate the performances that elicit the strongest emotional responses then why do show-stopping comedic performances so often receive the cold-shoulder? There is a relatively easy answer to this question found within the progression of American film across the past half-century. Cinema throughout the 1930s, 40s, and 50s saw the proliferation of genre filmmaking, with behemoths like the musical, western, epic, and comedy reigning supreme. During these decades, all of these styles saw success both popularly as cherished classics amongst the general public, and prestigiously as consistent award show champions.

Ron Underwood's 1990 monster flick "Tremors" is one of the better horror films of its decade and kicked off a long-running entertainment franchise that includes seven films and a 2003 TV series. It also provided horror aficionados with one of the most indelible heroes the genre has ever seen in Burt Gummer (Michael Gross), a violent, gun-toting survivalist who somehow comes across as decent, caring, and lovable. Oliver Wood, the veteran cinematographer behind several of the “Bourne” films, “Step Brothers,” “Talladega Nights” and “Face/Off,” died Monday, Feb. 13 of cancer, his representatives confirmed. He was 80.

The British director of photography acquired 60 credits over his five-decade career, including beloved action and comedy hits like “Die Hard 2” (1990), “Freaky Friday” (2003), “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby” (2006), and “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back” (2016).

Born Feb. 21, 1942, Wood moved to New York City at age 19 and found work on B-movies such as cult crime film “The Honeymoon Killers” (1969) and as a camera operator on “Body Rock” (1984), among others. He broke out in the film industry following his work on “Miami Vice,” where he was primary Dp from 1987 to 1989.

The newest addition to “The Walking Dead” universe, “Tales of the Walking Dead” consists of six original hour-long episodes featuring both new and returning characters within the zombie apocalypse. Through the new series, fans will get to see the world of the walkers through new eyes and discover more worlds, mythos and mysteries of “The Walking Dead.”

AMC released first-look photos of “The Walking Dead” spinoff “Tales of the Walking Dead” on Monday, showing off Terry Crews and Olivia Munn as a motorcycling pair, Parker Posey and Jillian Bell as unreasonably fashionable survivors and Jessie T. Usher of “The Boys” covered in blood.

The anthology series, also set in The Walking Dead Universe, will premiere Sunday, Aug. 14 at 9 p.m. Et/8c on AMC and AMC+, with the first two episodes streaming that same night on AMC+. Subsequent episodes will stream one week early, beginning Sunday, Aug. 21.

The series brings back Samantha Morton’s villain Alpha (now known as “Dee”) and adds new characters played by Anthony Edwards, Poppy Liu, Loan Chabanol, Embeth Davidtz, Daniella Pineda and Danny Ramirez of “Top Gun: Maverick.”

The highly anticipated new episodic anthology series Tales of the Walking Dead will premiere Sunday, August 14 at 9 pm Et/8c on AMC and AMC+, with the first two episodes streaming that same night on AMC+.

Subsequent episodes will stream one week early, beginning Sunday, August 21.

Tales of the Walking Dead consists of six original one-hour standalone episodes focused on both new and established characters within the walker apocalypse.

"Each episode has its own distinct tone and point of view -- but the stakes are high in each story, pushing new, indelible characters with relentless, life-threatening choices and situations," the logline reads.

AMC said Monday that the latest installment of its The Walking Dead universe, the episodic anthology series Tales of the Walking Dead, will premiere Sunday, August 14 at 9 p.m. on AMC and AMC+.

Fred Ward, who starred in films including “Henry and June,” “Tremors,” “The Right Stuff” and “The Player,” died May 8, his publicist confirmed to Variety. He was 79.

Among his other prominent roles were parts in “Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins,” “Miami Blues” and “Short Cuts.”

There was a certain retro quality to the actor’s persona that made Ward seem more akin to Humphrey Bogart or John Garfield (although not quite with those actors’ level of charisma) than to his contemporaries, and it did not seem at all affected. He appeared to be the sort of fellow who hailed from the South Side of Chicago or Hell’s Kitchen, but he was actually from San Diego.

Ward most recently appeared in the second season of HBO’s “True Detective” as Eddie Velcoro, the retired cop father of Colin Farrell’s Det. Ray Velcoro.

Exclusive: Grant Gustin, known for his role as Barry Allen/The Flash in the CW eponymous series, has signed on to star in Operation Blue Eyes, in which he’ll play Barry Keenan, the infamous businessman who orchestrated the kidnapping of Frank Sinatra, Jr in 1963. Criminal Minds star Joe Mantegna is directing the indie from a screenplay by Bradley Barth and Joseph Nasser. Production is slated to commence in May.

“Parasite” and “Jojo Rabbit” have won the top feature film trophies at the 70th Annual Ace Eddie Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Jinmo Yang won the dramatic feature category for “Parasite” over “Ford v Ferrari,” “Joker,” “The Irishman,” and “Marriage Story.” The victory marks the first time in Ace Eddie Awards history that a foreign language film has won the top prize.

Tom Eagles took the trophy for best edited comedy feature film for “Jojo Rabbit,” which won over “Dolemite Is My Name,” “The Farewell,” “Knives Out” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.”

“Jojo Rabbit” and “Parasite” are nominated for the Academy Award for Best Editing along with “Ford v Ferrari,” “Joker” and “The Irishman.”

Ace President Stephen Rivkin presided over the evening’s festivities with actress D’Arcy Carden, star of NBC’s “The Good Place,” serving as the evening’s host.

Bong Joon Ho’s acclaimed South Korean class-divide thriller “Parasite” and Taika Waititi’s Nazi satire “Jojo Rabbit,” both Editing and Best Picture Oscar nominees, were the surprise feature winners for drama and comedy at the 70th Ace Eddie Awards Friday at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. “Toy Story 4” and “Apollo 11,” meanwhile, took the awards for animation and feature documentary.

However, since Ace has long been an Academy Awards bellwether for editing, “Parasite” (edited by Jinmo Yang) now becomes the Oscar favorite, besting the frontrunner, Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” (edited by three-time Oscar winner Thelma Schoonmaker). And it could even be a harbinger for “Parasite” to make Academy history as the first international feature film to win the coveted Best Picture Oscar.

For Yang, who previously cut “Okja” and “Snowpiercer” with Bong, the director’s avoidance of coverage became even more of an obstacle on “Parasite.

Netflix pulled out all the stops towards the end of 2019, as the company launched the most robust slate of awards season titles in its brief history. Of course, the Oscar gold rush doesn’t leave the streamer or any of its competitors with much to offer at the start of the new year, and so Netflix’s January is extremely light on original fare.

To make up for it, the company is offering a grab bag of irrefutable favorites, many of which feed into current awards campaigns in one way or another. Anyone still high off the “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” fumes will be happy to find “Catch Me if You Can” and “Kill Bill” back on the platform, while “Joker” fans can parse “The Master” for shades of Arthur Fleck. Other gems, like Hikari’s “37 Seconds” and Max Joseph’s criminally dismissed “We Are Your Friends” are...
