Am I Racist?, the controversial documentary that satirizes Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives, failed to make the Oscar shortlist of nonfiction features today, despite earning more money at the box office than any other documentary this year, by far.
The film directed by Justin Folk features conservative author and podcaster Matt Walsh going undercover to infiltrate Dei seminars, dinners and the like. It scooped up more than $12 million at the domestic box office, but that wasn’t enough to sway the minds of Academy Documentary Branch members, who determine the shortlist (as well as the eventual five Oscar nominees).
Film participant Amanda Zurawksi and executive producer Hilary Clinton speak after the world premiere of ‘Zurawski v Texas’ at Telluride Film Festival
It may come as cold comfort to the Am I Racist? team, but films with an overt take on American politics were all spurned by the doc branch. Those include Zurawaski v Texas,...

"Some paintings aren't curious enough for me to go 'what's that?' This doesn't have that quality..." Ha ha! Utopia has revealed an official trailer for an indie comedy called Not an Artist, the second feature from filmmakers Alexi Pappas & Jeremy Teicher. This first premiered at the 2023 Austin Film Festival and will be on VOD in early 2025 to enjoy. A comedy making fun of artist residency programs! Zing! Pappas (A young woman) is accepted into a residency program created by the wealthy enigmatic benefactor known as "The Abbott" (RZA) for high-potential artists suffering from creative constipation. She's working on her art until her father unexpectedly shows up and disrupts the entire retreat. The indie comedy stars Matt Walsh (who co-wrote the script) with Ciara Bravo, Haley Joel Osment, "RZA", Cleopatra Coleman, Rosalind Chao, Betsy Sodaro, and Dan Bakkedahl. This reminds me of the quirky indies they used to make like...

Jack Quaid finds the rare genetic disorder that makes him impervious to physical pain becomes useful when he tries to save his girlfriend taken hostage in a bank robbery in the Novocaine trailer.
Suddenly, his affliction becomes a superpower as he turns into an ass-kicking action hero. Quaid plays Nate Caine, a mild-mannered everyman. Throughout the look at the film, he’s seen saying “It’s fine” when a knife is driven into his hand and feeling no pain when shards of glass are embedded in his knuckles, or when he grabs a gun from a hot deep fryer.
The actor, best known as Hughie Campbell Jr. in Prime Video’s hit series The Boys, stars opposite Amber Midthunder. She portrays the girl of his dreams, whom he must fight to rescue when she is kidnapped at the bank.

The latest indie feature from director/actress Alexi Pappas mocks the very idea of creating…well, anything. Pappas and Jeremy Teicher helm “Not An Artist” from a script they co-wrote with “Veep” alum Matt Walsh, who also stars.
“Not An Artist” centers on a artist-in-residency program overseen by an enigmatic patron (RZA) who may or may not be a cult leader. Per the official synopsis, the film follows “artists in turmoil who face a make-or-break ultimatum: unlock their full creative potential or abandon art forever. Yet, the unexpected intrusion of an outsider (Walsh) jeopardizes the program’s delicate balance.”
Haley Joel Osment, Rosalind Chao, Cleopatra Coleman, Paul Lieberstein, and Robert Schwartzman, whose Utopia is releasing the film, also star. Schwartzman founded Utopia in 2019, and has distributed films such as “Divinity” and “We’re All Going to the World’s Fair,” and contributed marketing...

Paramount Pictures has revealed the first trailer for "Novocaine." This appears to be going for an original superhero movie of sorts, albeit one with a pretty fun twist. Jack Quaid, of "The Boys" Fame, stars in the lead role as a man trying to rescue his new girlfriend, who's been taken hostage after a robbery gone wrong. To do so, he has to fight off a bunch of bad guys. Why is he qualified to do such a thing? Because he literally can't feel pain. So what he lacks in skill, he makes up for in other bats*** crazy ways.
This is a somewhat familiar setup at its core: Average guy meets a girl, falls in love with said girl, something bad happens to that girl, and he makes it his mission to save her. How many times have we seen that? What makes this interesting is the "can't feel pain" component,...

In the 1999 Pierce Brosnan James Bond film, The World is Not Enough, the villain Renard, played by Robert Carlyle, was a tough opposer for the 00-agent since he couldn’t feel pain. That concept is now being explored with a new twist as Jack Quaid plays an everyday man with a similar trait, only he is harnessing it to become a reluctant hero. Paramount has released the trailer to Novocaine, which stars Quaid, Amber Midthunder, Ray Nicholson, Betty Gabriel, Matt Walsh, Lou Beatty Jr., Van Hengst, Conrad Kemp and Jacob Batalon.

The movie is currently unrated. However, with its concept, the trailer’s balls-to-the-wall tendency to explore every facet of this concept and the graphic action it brings,...

"You gotta be careful dude. You can still die. You're not Wolverine!" Paramount has unveiled the official trailer for an action comedy called Novocaine, landing in theaters in March 2025 early next year. From the filmmaking duo Dan Berk & Robert Olsen comes this crazy new action flick. Which reminds me of the two super crazy Crank and Crank: High Voltage movies. Meet Nathan Caine. He feels no pain. When the girl of his dreams (played by Amber Midthunder) is kidnapped, everyman Nate turns his inability to feel pain into an unexpected strength in his fight to get her back. Jack Quaid stars as Nate Caine (that name is a bit too similar to "novocaine" but that's obviously on purpose) along with Amber Midthunder, Ray Nicholson, Betty Gabriel, Matt Walsh, Lou Beatty Jr., Van Hengst, Conrad Kemp, Jacob Batalon. This looks like a totally ridiculous concept that should make for a totally entertaining movie.

Diversity, equity and inclusion workshops might not seem a natural backdrop for a documentary. But using a satirical spin, Matt Walsh and Justin Folk mined the territory for their feature “Am I Racist?” Exhibitors are typically reluctant to program documentaries, never mind hot-button ones, but they quickly came around. In the process, the film became the highest-grossing doc since 2018.
“I think we approached [the film] in a way that was entertaining and funny,” Walsh said during a Variety-hosted panel for the film on Dec. 3. “I think that drove a lot of interest into this film. And so when the exhibitors took a chance on us, I think it paid off. And part of that was the fact that we were willing to wade into these waters. We were willing to talk about a subject that’s very controversial and do so in a very just, I guess, not expected way.

The DailyWire+ satirical documentary Am I Racist? broke records by making more than $12 million at the box office. It also landed a session in Deadline’s awards-season showcase Contenders Documentary.
In the movie, director Justin Folk films Matt Walsh infiltrating leaders in diversity movements and causing a scene in disguise. Walsh interrupted a Saira Rao dinner lecture decrying white women by dropping stacks of plates.
While Walsh and Folk disagree with the sentiments expressed by activists like Rao, they also spoke with regular Americans in Black and white communities. Walsh said the message is that Americans want to move on from discussing race.
“I think for a lot of people, they feel like, ‘Let’s move on. Let’s not dwell on these things,’” Walsh said. “By the way, that was the message we heard in the film, not just from white people. We went down south to Louisiana — a Black community in Louisiana,...

The candidates may surprise you – one from Brazil, another from Québec, a classic about JFK, a groundbreaking series that ran 14 episodes, and a 7-hour and 47-minute epic ostensibly about an all-star athlete turned accused murderer.

There wasn’t much of a chance that any of the new movies would give Tim Burton and Michael Keaton‘s reunion for “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” a run for the top spot. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Sure enough, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” was the number-one movie for a second weekend in a row with $51.6 million, down 54% from its opening weekend, bringing its domestic total to $188 million in North America. Overseas, it added another $28.7 million, which helped bring its international total to $76.3 million and worldwide box office to $264.3 million. We’re definitely going to have to wait to see how well this holds up against upcoming movies like “Transformers One.”
James McAvoy starred in the Blumhouse remake of the Danish horror film “Speak No Evil,” which Universal released into 3,375 theaters with strong reviews, currently at 85% on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite a strong premise, the latest Blumhouse only brought in $1.3 million in...

“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” (Warner Bros.) had an unexpectedly strong second weekend. With just under $52 million, it fell 54 percent (quite decent from a $111 million start), and a domestic total of $188 million in just 10 days.
Its take made up just over half of the U.S./Canada estimated gross of $95 million. That’s up 50 percent from last year, with year to date totals now 12 percent below last year.
The “Beetlejuice” 36 years-later sequel now looks certain to top the original film’s grosses, adjusted to current ticket prices. “Twisters” (Universal), released earlier this summer, was a similar legacy project, though with a different cast. As big as it was ($266 million domestic so far), that’s about half of the adjusted total for the 1996 original.
“Beetlejuice,” however, is faring similarly to “Twisters” overseas. With the film open around most of the world, its foreign take so far is only $76 million, a smaller gross compared to domestic.

The weekend box office numbers have begun rolling in, and it looks like Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice held up much better than anyone (except us) expected in week two. According to Deadline, the popular sequel grossed $51.6 million this weekend, which is the second-best sophomore weekend for a fall movie since It back in 2017. Notably, the film only dipped 54% this weekend, a strong hold for a movie that opened north of $100 million.
With a $188 million domestic total, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice seems certain to end its domestic run with a $250 million-plus final gross. It is another winner for Warner Bros, who are having a good year. Wonka, Dune: Part Two, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire were all major worldwide hits, with only their underrated Furiosa and Horizon: Chapter 1 box office misfires for them this year. They also have Joker: Folie a Deux coming up in a few weeks, which should be another hit,...

Tim Burton and Warner Bros.’ Beetlejuice Beetlejuice lost none of its ghostly mojo in its second weekend and easily stayed atop the box office chart with an estimated $51.6 million as it hurtles toward the $200 million mark domestically.
The pic, playing in 4,575 theaters domestically, fell just 54 percent for a 10-day domestic total of $188 million. Overseas, the sequel took in another $28.7 million from 76 markets for a lukewarm foreign tally of $76.3 million and $264.3 million globally.
Blumhouse and Universal’s new horror-thriller Speak No Evil was also good news for the early fall box office. The pic opened in second place with an estimated $11.5 million from 3,375 locations against a budget of just $15 million before marketing. The movie follows an American family as they spend the weekend at a plush British estate only to discover that their host, played by James McAvoy, has a rather sinister side. McAvoy is earning strong marks for his performance.

Three new movies were no match for the Ghost With the Most as “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” loomed large over domestic box office charts again.
Tim Burton’s spooky sequel added a stellar $51.6 million in its second weekend of release, bringing its tally to $188 million in North America and $264 million globally. “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” hasn’t resonated as strongly at the international box office, where the Warner Bros. film has earned $76.3 million to date.
In terms of newcomers, “Speak No Evil,” Universal and Blumhouse’s remake of the 2022 Danish horror film, opened in second place with $11.5 million from 3,375 venues. Provocateur comedian Matt Walsh’s satire documentary “Am I Racist?” landed in fourth place with a decent $4.75 million from 1,517 theaters. The film, released by conservative pundit Ben Shapiro’s The Daily Wire, landed the top debut in 2024 for a doc. Meanwhile, Lionsgate’s “The Killer’s Game” with Dave Bautista failed to connect, debuting at No.

Matt Walsh isn’t one to shy away from a contentious issue. In his previous film “What is a Woman?”, the Daily Wire columnist sought to understand the concept of gender identity. Now, in “Am I Racist?”, Walsh tackles another timely topic – diversity, equity and inclusion training in America.
Like his character Borat, Walsh goes undercover for this documentary. Only instead of foreign journalist, he assumes the guise of a white man earnest to learn. His goal is to explore whether he himself holds racist views. But Walsh also wants to pull back the curtain on Dei experts and uncover their true messages.
To do so, Walsh receives online certification in diversity training. From there, he infiltrates seminars and workshops, conducting surprising interviews along the way. One of his biggest “gets” is Robin Diangelo, the bestselling author on antiracism. Walsh even hosts his own Dei event, all while keeping his true identity hidden.

It’s still the ghost with the most money at the box office this weekend, with “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” retaining the top slot on domestic charts in its second weekend. Universal’s horror play “Speak No Evil” is putting up a modest but solid performance as runner-up though, with $4.9 million from 3,375 locations across Friday and preview screenings.
That puts it on the higher side of tracking for a $10 million to $13 million opening, which the James McAvoy vehicle had drawn before the weekend. It’s a strong start for the Blumhouse Productions thriller, especially on a typically lean budget of $15 million. Reviews have been strong for the James Watkins-directed remake, which nearly functions as a scene-for-scene (to a point) recreation of the breakthrough Danish thriller of the same name from two years ago. Public sentiment is good, too, with audience survey firm Cinema Score determining a B+ grade — a pretty positive aggregate for a horror movie,...

Tim Burton’s hit sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, is on track for a pretty massive second weekend. While some expected the film to suffer a large drop-off in its second weekend, that seems not to be the case, with Deadline reporting that it should make about $50 million. That’s exactly what we predicted a few days ago, and to note it’s also the biggest second weekend for a fall movie since It back in 2017.
Indeed, word of mouth seems good for this sequel (which we only had to wait thirty-six years for), and it’s making so much money that I wonder if Tim Burton’s going to stick to his claim that this is his last Beetlejuice movie. Even if it is, hopefully, he and Michael Keaton will re-team at some point, as clearly, these guys bring out something very special in each other.

If it’s Friday the 13th, and you’re a studio (especially Blumhouse), you don’t miss the opportunity to program a genre film, and that’s Speak No Evil this weekend. The James Watkins directed, written and produced movie made $1.3M from previews last night that began at 2Pm. The Universal distributed R-rated title is expected to do around $10M off good reviews at 87% certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Audience score stands at 86%. The James McAvoy, Scoot McNairy and Mackenzie Davis feature follows a family who gets invited to spend a whole weekend in a lonely home in the countryside, but as the weekend progresses, they soon realize that the family who invited them has a dark side laying inside them.

Hurricane Francine in Louisiana won’t scare off Beetlejuice Beetlejuice as the Tim Burton directed Warner Bros. sequel is expected to ease -60% in its second weekend making it the second best second frame for September with around $44M. If that projection holds, it will rank behind New Line’s record September second weekend for It ($60.1M).
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice notched the second-best Tuesday in September behind 2017’s It’s $11.4M with $9M and a running $126.1M domestic cume. For anyone keeping track of Burton’s highest grossing movies stateside, it’s Alice in Wonderland ($334.1M) then Batman ($251M). Currently, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is pacing 12% behind It over five days, that pic ending its initial run at $327.4M (lifetime is $328.8M).
Meanwhile, Hurricane Francine weakened to a tropical storm last night, per CNN, and pushed into the Louisiana inland. We heard there were about 20 theaters that shuttered yesterday from the New Orleans suburbs to Baton Rouge.

“God’s Not Dead: In God We Trust” (Fathom) and “Am I Racist?” (Sdg) won’t register with most mainstream moviegoers, but this weekend they could rank as high as #3 and #4 (in either order), behind “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” (Warner Bros.) and the debuting “Speak No Evil” (Universal). Also in the mix are Lionsgate’s new “The Killer’s Game” and the 8th weekend of “Deadpool & Wolverine.”
Of these, guess which two are top candidates for receiving the rare A+ Cinemascore.
There’s a history of lucrative performances for similar films that appeal to conservative faith-based or Maga-related audiences (which frequently overlap). The progressive side has its analogs, particularly in Michael Moore documentaries, but for the last decade or more nearly all the preach-to-the-choir breakthroughs come from the right wing of the ideological spectrum.

Box office preview: Will ‘Speak No Evil’ keep ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ from its first place repeat?
“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” may have given the fall movie season a serious jumpstart, but it’s not the only September release, as we are about to go into yet another busy weekend. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
James McAvoy, Mackenzie Davis, Scott McNairy, and Aisling Franciosi (“The Last Voyage of the Demeter”) star in Universal Pictures and Blumhouse’s remake of the Danish horror film “Speak No Evil,” which received rave reviews when it premiered at Sundance and ended up streaming on Shudder. Directed by British filmmaker James Watkins (“The Woman in Black”), this remake looks pretty straight-forward with the same premise of a couple traveling to visit another couple they met on holiday, with the biggest difference being that the respective families are now American and British.

Nick Jonas recently took on a challenging and dramatic role in the film The Good Half, directed by Robert Schwartzman and written by Brett Ryland. The film, which premiered in the US on July 23, 2024, and is now available for international rental, showcases Jonas in a deeply emotional narrative, diverging from his more familiar musical and comedic roles.
Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas turned heads with their stunning appearance at a family friend’s wedding
In The Good Half, Nick plays Renn, a writer who returns to his hometown of Cleveland for his mother’s funeral. The character’s journey through grief and personal growth forms the emotional core of the film. J Balvin will make his big screen debut as an Interpol investigator digging into a drug smuggling operation in the upcoming film, Little Lorraine, according to Variety.
The film appears to be loosely based on real events in the Eighties, and will chronicle how a far-flung fishing and mining village in Nova Scotia became a hub for cocaine smuggling. Balvin’s Interpol investigator is drawn up north while investigating a Colombian drug ring suspected of moving product through the area.
Along with Balvin, the film will star Sean Astin and Stephen Amell.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus has touched down at the 2024 Democratic National Convention, where she first visited Stephen Colbert’s Late Show before she hosts a Wednesday event with the country’s Democratic women governors.
Colbert is hosting his late-night show live from Chicago during the DNC’s run this week, filming from Chicago’s Auditorium Theater, a short distance away from the convention hub’s United Center. And Louis-Dreyfus, along with Hillary Rodham Clinton — one of the DNC opening night’s speakers — were two of his first guests. The women got a chance to interact backstage — “So exciting! Divine,” said Louis-Dreyfus — and when the Veep star took a seat on Colbert’s couch, she revisited the hilarious story of the pair’s very first interaction together.

Kamala Harris and Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ “Veep” character Selina Meyer were both female vice presidents, but the actor says that’s where their similarities end.
During an appearance on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” live from the Democratic National Convention, Louis-Dreyfus discussed the spike in popularity “Veep” has experienced following President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from this year’s election and Harris’ announcement of her candidacy.
When Colbert brought up the fact that “Veep” viewership has increased by 350%, Louis-Dreyfus said, “It’s a great thing, I think?” Still, she felt the need to clarify that Meyer and Harris do not share the same personality traits.
“Let me explain to you, on ‘Veep’ I played a narcissistic, megalomaniac sociopath, and that is not Kamala Harris,” she said, adding: “It might be another candidate in the race.”
Colbert then asked which “Veep” character reminds Louis-Dreyfus the most of Donald Trump’s running mate Jd Vance.

From facial wars to a penguin friend, wandering surfers and Haitian immigrants in Miami, the independent film market is fun, thoughtful, varied and contending with a faster cadence of high performing studio wide releases. That’s exhilarating on one hand but, indie distribution executives say, is making it increasingly difficult to date their films after having a pretty clear field for the first half of 2024.

Tim Walz seems too nice, too relatable, and too down-to-earth. He must be harboring a dark secret and Republicans have found it: Tim Walz has a “white guy” tolerance for spicy food.
On Thursday, the Harris-Walz campaign released a lengthy video of Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz having a one-on-one conversation about their interests, lives, and past careers — and their culinary preferences.
“Like, I have white guy tacos,” Walz tells Harris at the beginning of the conversation.
“What does that mean? Like mayonnaise and tuna?” Harris asks.

A reserved man with some unresolved childhood issues returns to his hometown for the funeral of a parent. This isn’t only the premise at the heart of Robert Schwartzman’s well-meaning yet timid feature “The Good Half,” but also a recurrent foundation on which many a melancholic American dramedy, from “Elizabethtown” to “Garden State” to “This Is Where I Leave You.”
Pointing out this thematic repetition isn’t necessarily to knock down one of cinema’s favorite topics — after all, familial grief is among the most shared and relatable of human aches. And what are movies, if not an echo of those experiences? But you still go into a film like “The Good Half” hoping that it has something of its own to say on the pains of bereavement. Instead, it just lands like a medley of similar films that came before it.
