According to reports, actress Blake Lively ("Gossip Girl", will star in the spy thriller "The Rhythm Section", for 'James Bond' producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli of Eon Productions, based on author Mark Burnell’s four novel, espionage series:
"...'the world of 'Stephanie Patrick' was destroyed by the Atlantic aircrash. Falling into a downward spiral of prostitution, drugs and drink, she is picked up by a journalist who has discovered that it was a bomb that caused the crash. And it is his murder that pulls her out of herself.

Close-Up is a column that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Abel Ferrara's King of New York (1990) is playing June 16 - July 16, 2017 on Mubi in the United Kingdom.“In striving to sin, to blaspheme, Ferrara’s heroes assert with Lucifer their moral autonomy, their sovereignty, their heroic identity, their glory, pitifully”—Tag Gallagher We’re introduced to Frank White (Christopher Walken) with one of director Abel Ferrara’s iconic roving pans, creeping left–right from the darkness of the prison wall to the harsh white of Frank’s cell. Frank is placed small in the frame, positioned slightly off-centre towards the bottom corner, his back to the camera as he prays silently. The prison bars dominate the composition, abstracted into silhouettes by Ferrara’s chiaroscuro lighting. A police baton enters the frame and knocks twice on the cell door, jarring Frank out of his concentration. The door is then...

American cinema in the Seventies through to the early Nighties was populated with the kind of leading characters you don’t see enough of any more – no nonsense, amoral tough guys, often on the wrong side of the law, rugged complexions lines with life, who start off mean and don’t get any nicer by the closing credits.
Director Sam Peckinpah’s brilliantly brutal and bloody Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974) features a prime example of this. Bennie, played by Warren Oates (pictured above), is a down on his luck bartender whose ears prick up when $1 million dollars is offered for the titular, potentially suicidal deed – but as Bennie says, ‘nobody loses all the time’. It’s possibly Oates’s finest performance as the tequila-soaked bounty hunter who, the more outgunned he is, the more savage his becomes. It’s also one of Peckinpah’s greatest films, and nicely encapsulates the violent,...

In Year of the Dragon, King of New York, and Heat: we see the backs of heads, we see men with obsessive drives, propelled, driven by force.
The camera has no choice but to follow them.
In fact, Year of the Dragon gives us men who are not just propelled by force, but are force.
—but at the expense of their personal lives, destroying the relationships with those closest to them.
So too, then, does Heat, 10 years later.
Friends and loved ones all die, thus accidental Pietàs are formed.
—foreshadowed by existing Pietàs.
All three films are romantic films, because color is no longer an outward physical phenomenon, but rather an internal representation, a mood. An emotion.
The camera sweeps.

Chicago – We’re back. Last month’s list of ten interesting new additions to the Netflix library was a huge success and it’s time for your October edition. Every one of the ten films/shows listed below has been added in the last 30 days, and the emphasis this time is on things you may not have seen.
So, don’t consider these the “best” movies when compared to one another but the best choices for your time. I mean, who hasn’t seen “Evil Dead 2,” “Ghostbusters,” and “Fargo,” all new to Netflix? You should totally watch those masterpieces again and then check out something new…

King of New York
Directed by Abel Ferrara
Written by Nicholas St. John
Us, 1990
Something of a cult hero among worshippers of ‘video-nasty’ exploitation flicks and latter day grim and grungy crime flicks, it’s a surprise to learn that Bronx director Abel Ferrara is still working diligently behind the camera, albeit on the kind of B-movie fodder that never threatens to break its way into the mainstream zeitgeist. Beyond his eye catching if hard to watch Driller Killer debut, Ferrara is best known for the fondly remembered Bad Lieutenant. His best rounded effort, however, may be the more controversial and divisive King of New York, a slick and stylish slice of understated pulp which earned walkouts at its premiere.

Christopher Walken has never bettered his performance as Frank White, a drug lord who, after a stint behind bars, returns to a New York he no longer recognises and an industry he no longer wants to be a part of. So begins a relentlessly violent attempt to ordain himself as the single-handed saviour of the city.

King of New York, arguably the most popular and accomplished work from the cannon of cult New York filmmaker Abel Ferrara, finds a loving home on Blu-ray, thanks to that dedicated restoration team at Arrow Films.
Frank White (a haunted, yet volatile, turn by Christopher Walken) is a notorious drug lord who has just completed a lengthy prison sentence and is looking to move back up the ranks as swift and ruthlessly as possible. Hooking up with his old associates, he begins to do just that, although his ultimate aims sit firmly outside the drug business, as he see’s himself as a benefactor to the poor inhabitants of the city, whom he seeks to help and provide the appropriate support for.

Arrow Films is pleased to announce that the highly anticipated deluxe Blu-ray, DVD & Steelbook editions of Abel Ferrara’s cult gangster classic King Of New York, will be released in the UK on Monday June 25th.
We have three copies of the Blu-ray to give away!
Taking influence from the hard-edged crime capers of the 1930’s, King Of New York stars Christopher Walken in electric form as the snakelike mob boss Frank White. Originally released in September 1990, on the same day as Goodfellas, King Of New York is widely regarded as one of the most stylish and visually stunning movies of the decade.
Ferrara perfectly captures New York’s gritty underbelly. The near non-stop action showcases the vast contrasts of a city after the sun goes down; from the luxury Penthouses and restaurants of Manhattan, to crack dens, apartment blocks, and the rattling carriages of the New York subway.

I used to believe, like Wenders or Godard, in the death of cinema. I accepted it as fact but never believed in it. The movies, that’s what I believed in—a dark room, shadows on a surface, a bunch of lonely people sitting down, looking up.
Like Leos Carax to Serge Daney, Abel Ferrara showed me there’d be cinema ‘til the end of the world.
***
At first I thought Abel Ferrara’s films were badly acted; I soon realized Ferrara would take bad acting with truth in it over a masterpiece of falsehoods. (Later I found out that Ferrara would, in Dangerous Game and New Rose Hotel, use one to create the other.)
I thought his films were too commercial. “Already captivated by cinema, I didn’t need to be seduced as well,” as Serge Daney put it. Hollywood in the 21st century is a highly sophisticated marketing ploy.

"I was his biggest fan, rockin' with him. And I was shorty, I was his pride and joy. Sometimes he would say to me, 'I feel like you're my baby, like I birthed you,' " Kim said, laughing.
With a bond that intimate, there are few people more qualified than Kim to speculate on whom the Brooklyn Don might have collaborated with had he not died on that fateful March night. It's a question that fans have pondered for the past 15 years. "I...
