For someone having an accidental career, Michelle Monaghan -- Maggie on HBO's "True Detective" -- is doing pretty well.

The 37-year-old actress grew up in a town of 700, Winthrop, Iowa, and daydreamed of becoming a journalist.

"I grew up loving current events," Monaghan tells Zap2it. "You grow up looking out when there are not a lot of other things going on in your hometown."

Monaghan lived in town, but her family had a farm and grew corn and beans. Her summer vacations were spent detasseling corn.

"I would go through rows and snap it off for $5 an hour," she says. Monaghan left Winthrop for Chicago, where she put herself through college by modeling for catalogs.

"This acting thing landed in my lap," she says. "They were looking for an actress on 'Young Americans' on The WB. Ian Somerhalder and Kate Bosworth came out of there."

Start celebrating: Channel 4 has secured the UK rights to Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.

In addition to its original drama content (Black Mirror, Utopia, Misfits), Channel 4 is proving quite the tasteful magpie of international drama. Earlier this year, it bought us superlative French supernatural mystery series The Returned, and now? It's only secured the UK rights to Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., arguably the most anticipated new start Us series of the year. 

This is a piece of news we've been on tenterhooks waiting to hear, and frankly, it couldn't be better (well okay, a BBC acquisition would have meant no ads, but still, it's non-subscription UK channel).

A source confirmed the happy news to Us Weekly, adding that the "Source Code" actress and her graphic artist hubby Peter White, are expected to welcome the little one in the fall.

The 'Machine Gun Preacher' actress had a mole on her leg investigated after being urged to by husband Peter White during a vacation in Australia and is "grateful" she sought medical advice when she did.

She said: "A few years ago I had a mole on the back of my calf, and [my husband Peter White] was adamant that I get it checked.
